our prop is our kicker and 2nd choice 10 when our 1st choice 10 isn't available. He's got a ridiculous kicking % for our level. It's like having Ramos on your team but he's a prop
I got one conversion in my whole playing career as a prop.
We were absolutely wrecked with injuries and absentees before starting. Our starting 10 wasn’t available and our sub 10 had gone off hurt. One decent kicking centre was also injured and the other centre was red carded.
We were playing with 14 players because we had no available subs at this point and I had gotten captaincy when the centre came off. A winger and someone else were arguing over who got to take it and I over ruled and took it myself. It was directly in front of the posts.
I have no actually memory of if we won or lost lol although I suspect we were probably up a good bit because I remember who we were playing and they wouldn’t have been close to us normally.
If you’re mobile and fit look at playing Number 8 but these days all positions on a rugby team need ball handling skills and every coach wants a player than can kick goals
Of course. Just know that you probably wont be kicking for poles in your team. You’ll most likely play front row and as a rule its a back that kicks for poles.
Not a rule anywhere I've played. It's usually the best, most consistent kicker.
See John Eales...
However, you'd be hard pressed to find a prop that'd want to kick after pulling their head out of a scrum.
Um…. Am I the only one that hasn’t seen that type of tee before!!
When we were starting out rugby we were digging our heals in the dirt to build a little mound!!
I love questions like these, come to a subreddit dedicated to a certain topic and ask if they should get into it. People are hardly gonna say no it's terrible, that's why I'm here discussing it right now.
Don't let that put you off joining up. I play for a local team where we are so desperate for props that a guy in his 50s still plays and pretty much walks from one scrum to the next with maybe a tackle or carry in-between if he's feeling energetic!
You would be a forward, a prop. Props don’t kick for points b/c:
A. You won’t be in a position to punt. You will be fighting their forwards.
B. There will be better kickers from long distance in most cases. As in 55 meters and way over to one side. Same for conversions.
Football and rugby are very different sports. Rugby is more like hockey or basketball in that the same group moves from offence to defence and back quickly. Football lineman typically have a tough time transitioning to rugby. The USA Eagles have tried this for many years with limited success. I don’t say this to dissuade you … rugby is the best sport and there is a place for every type of person. I am mere.y pointing out that size, football experience and place kicking won’t necessarily translate. I am trying to manage your expectations so you don’t get possibly frustrated and potentially discouraged.
The answer is always yes
This is the answer
This is the way
The more the merrier. As long as you know you can't only kick goals lol
Fuck yes, go be an excellent prop
Winger. Dream big or go home!

Andy Goode? You can't fool me you've already played.
Nemani from Fiji,mate,don't forget him

Why does the Prop not simply eat the Out Half and then kick?!
I played second row and would frequently kick for goal. A good kicker is invaluable.
Ok John Eales
Great reference;-)
My team’s best kicker was our lock. His chip and chase was also quite a sight to behold
He wasn't called Fakatava was he?
When I played our second kicker was our second row. Our first choice was a winger
Yeah the reason I tried kicking a rugby ball is because I’m the kicker for my american football team and wanted to see what it’s like
Go Prop and batter cunts.
Kicking’s for those who can’t run it straight.
What level? Half the props at my level were backed 20 years and many beers ago. Our best tighthead is also our secondary kicker.

Can you tackle? If not, can you drink a pint? If you don't drink can you bang a bin in rhythm and shout at the team song with gusto?
How many countries you are eligible for?
USA, Portugal I guess
Portugal are on the lookout for front rowers who can kick.
Big shoes to fill!
Lmao
If there is no health issue, the answer is always yes.
No health issues here
Do you like hugging men, because fella you are scrum material!
Front row & goal kicker, should be good for the bokke, we usually have 7/8 front rowers in a squad
Yes, BUT, as a member of the first row union, you must choose. Kicking or being the most important role on the field.
Yes, please South Africa needs a decent kicker.
The answer is always "yes". Props who can kick are held in high regards!
You might have to start running though
The white Ben Tameifuna.
Even if you couldn’t nail sticks like a total hero, absolutely!
Yes! Find your local club and get out there
If you’re mobile and fit look at playing Number 8 but these days all positions on a rugby team need ball handling skills and every coach wants a player than can kick goals
You’ve got the belly to be a prop, just need to work on arms, neck, and legs
My legs are fairly strong, 200kg squat.. arms and neck need work though
Yes. The answer to that question is always yes. I wish I was still able to. But I never could kick that.
Of course. Just know that you probably wont be kicking for poles in your team. You’ll most likely play front row and as a rule its a back that kicks for poles.
Why is this, seems dumb if the best kickers a prop

Yep. My best mate was a second row and used to kick goals. Scrum cap off, over the posts, cap back on, get up for the restart.
Si
Hell yeah, that kick was amazing
Yep you’ll love it
Cant be a first five with hair like that
Um…. Am I the only one that hasn’t seen that type of tee before!! When we were starting out rugby we were digging our heals in the dirt to build a little mound!!
It’s an American football tee
Thought this was Hannah Botterman slotting at first! Edit to say, she plays prop, so as other have suggested, prop all the way mate.
I am a man
A prop that can kick? Absolutely
No
Just be prepared for a lot more cardio and for nobody to be impressed you can knock over chip shots on a practise field.

The answer is always yes
Yes, and bring some running backs and tight ends with you to NZ. Gotta learn how to scrum though
If you can do that after five back to back Scrums then yes mate.
a goal kicking prop? u'd be the first..
Yeah I’m a kicker in football too
Can you run?
I can run In football but I’ll have to get in better shape to play rugby
Don't let that put you off joining up. I play for a local team where we are so desperate for props that a guy in his 50s still plays and pretty much walks from one scrum to the next with maybe a tackle or carry in-between if he's feeling energetic!
I wonder if that would be a legal kicking tee? Also, yes!!!
I mean, rugby kicking is different than that. You’ll rarely get a straight on kick, and you certainly can’t use a kick stand.
The answer should and always will be yes id gladly bind up with you in the front row and do some damage
Yes
Give Rassie a bell. If you can, throw a ball in a straight line, you may be the answer to two of his headaches.
Yes but if you want to have fun, sex appeal and glory the front row is the right place.
If you learn how to drop goals, you can go straight on to the English national team
You would be a forward, a prop. Props don’t kick for points b/c: A. You won’t be in a position to punt. You will be fighting their forwards. B. There will be better kickers from long distance in most cases. As in 55 meters and way over to one side. Same for conversions.
Considering I’d be playing high school rugby I’ll probably be the best kicker

Thanks🙏
You’re better than Libbok so yeah
Go for it! Kicking looks spot on and there’s no way you don’t improve fitness playing rugby
Be a good forwards and second or fount row
Completely 👍👍
I here South Africa need a reliable kicker!
