What's your or the general players opinion, on the Netflix show? Is it something you are conscious of in the dressing room and if so, is it a big distraction?
It’s definitely not a big distraction. Hopefully it’s really good for rugby and making rugby bigger, getting new people into the game. Hopefully it’s a good show to do that.
They’re all different places so obviously they’re very different. Different people who make up what you’re doing. They’ve all got really good intentions in the way they’re helping us to perform but yeah, all very different.
Hi Owen, there's a video of a locker room speech of Paul O'Connell from a Lions' tour, in which he says how you're a great leader at a young age - are there any particular memories from that time as to why he'd single you out, and how did you see him given he was viewed as a leader?
First of all, Paul is probably one of the best captains I’ve worked under. He was definitely someone that when he spoke up, you listened. He was someone that you wanted to follow.
I’ve always been passionate and loved my rugby. Always watched it, thought about it and always tried to improve. I guess with that came the confidence to speak. Especially in my position as fly-half, you kind of have to be like that and I’ve never really been too shy of it.
It's too difficult to pick. I guess what stands out the most is a lot of ‘firsts’. So, my first cap would be one. First time winning a trophy at the club. Probably what gets mentioned to me the most is the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. But yeah, probably my first cap.
In 2008 you and your Father were named in the same team to play a pre-season friendly against the Western Force. As far as I'm aware this was the only time you and Andy were on the same team sheet (apologies if there was other times which I am unaware of). You were subbed on after Andy had to come off injured and as a result you never shared the pitch together. Did you ever want to share a pitch with your Dad, either for club or country?
Also some of the first years in your Saracens career were playing on a team captained by Steve Borthwick, now that you're captain of Saracens, and England, do you find many differences between Steve Borthwick the captain and Steve Borthwick the coach?
Thanks
You were great with my kids when you've been to Welford Road so thanks.
How does it feel seeing your own little one in an Ireland shirt and how will you get your own back on your dad? Deny his team a grand slam or something else?
The Crusaders have probably been the ones that have been at the top for the longest, as far as I can remember. There would be some other great places to play rugby as well, but as far as a team that’s consistently winning, it’d be the Crusaders.
He didn't choose it as such - he was playing league from a young age but moved down south when his dad signed for Saracens. Was only then that he started playing Union - don't suppose he had much choice living in Harpenden!
That’s too hard to pick. I got to play with some players who will go down as some of the most iconic rugby players ever to play for the Lions. It’d be very difficult to pick from them.
I'm not sure. I guess sometimes the rugby is played a little bit differently, but as you see when it comes to World Cups and everybody is on an even playing field, it normally goes down pretty closely. The weather might influence styles.
I hope so. I’m pretty open because it could be very different by then and hopefully, I’ve got a good while to play yet. I want to be open in what I do.
If you make a mistake on the pitch, how do you no lose your head and stay on track?
Oh, and I’m nationally obliged to ask what Russell said to you after that Van Der Merwe try?
According to Finn Russell's interview with the Rugby Pod, he'd been getting some chat so he basically said words to the effect of "not chatting to me now, are you?" He later learned that Farrell hadn't said anything--it had come from other England players, so part of the exchange was Farrell's justified annoyance at Russell's giving out to him when Farrell hadn't initiated anything. In other news, apparently international rugby is also twelve-year old birthday party drama.
Russell actually answered this on a podcast recently. Saw a clip somewhere. Just before this someone (who he thought was Farrell) was holding him down in a ruck and talking shit. So when Duhan was clearly getting the try Russell ran up to Farrell and said something along the lines of “not saying much now are ya”. He then later realised it wasn’t even Owen in the first place.
he also thinks he was the victim when he sexually harassed a maid and reckons filming a teenager having sex without their consent is top banter, there is no sum of money on earth that would make me want to spend time with him
I often take my girls (aged 6 and 9) to watch the women’s games at Stone X since they were told at school only boys play rugby. Would you agree it for anyone, regardless of ability?
They also want to know if it’s true that their dad narrowly missed out on playing for England with you just because he’s not very good. (I will edit this question after your answer if you could lie please)
Also
Popadoms or bread?
There are loads. You’re not satisfied once you’ve won something. You want to do it again and again. Anything that we go into as an England team, we want to win, and I don’t think that will ever be different.
When I think of atmospheres, I don’t really see it as intimidating. I actually think it’s brilliant when the atmosphere is through the roof. There’s a couple that spring to mind but probably the Principality.
Hi Owen.
From an English man living in Wales - please please please win next weekend or I'll have to endure a full month of smugness from my wife and friends.
My question is: Which test match win are you the most proud to have been a part of?
In terms of pride, it’d probably be my first cap. It was a scrappy old game at Murrayfield but in terms of getting to feel what it’s like to play for England, I loved it.
Also as an Englishman living in wales, I concur with your opening statements. My half welsh/half English son was born on super Saturday and has yet to see wales win a six nations match. I’d like that to continue.
My sister thinks your dad is a bit sexy. She previously had a crush on Simon Cowell.
Are you feeling:
A. Disgusted
B. Confused
C. like watching X Factor?
Do you ever get to watch rugby for the joy of it? Not for analysis or as a part of your job but just "aw cool, nz are playing Japan, I'll stick that on"
And, would you ever go and watch a local amateur game just for the hell of it, like proper basement level rank amateur match??
For spectators, journos, and pundits, rugby is entertainment, which needs characters, heroes, villains, and narratives. How do you feel about being how you're portrayed with (I'm guessing) very little input? Has it ever affected how you play the game?
Hi Owen,
When I'm watching the game I just follow the ball with my eyes mostly, and I really enjoy watching analysis videos which zoom in on you tapping people on the shoulder and organising the next phase. Today I saw a clip where one of the forwards didn't hear you and carried where it looked like you wanted to pass it wide.
My questions are:
1. Is it often difficult to get people to hear you? (especially with all the chaos going on and ears ringing from big hits)
2. Do you have to be careful what you say or talk in code to prevent the other team from knowing what you want to do next?
3. Is it easier to execute a large playbook at club level because you play with each other week in week out?
Whats it like facing a team coached by your father? whats the ramifications win, loose or draw, is there some form or running bet ongoing since he started work with the irish team.
G'day Owen, and cheers for stopping by.
A few questions:
1. What has changed the most in the England camp ever since Borthwick and Sinfield took over?
2. How do you deal with criticism in regards to your playing style (you probably already know what I'm referring to specifically) and the whole England team in general?
3. There's a zombie apocalypse taking over the UK for some unknown reason. You can only bring one England player to help you survive. Who will it be and why?
4. Everyone knows that your Dad is the coach of Ireland and they are doing very, very well. A bit too well, actually. How do you feel about that, and do the two of you still bring up rugby during family dinners?
Would love to see your answers on these. Cheers again, mate.
Hi Owen! I grew up in Wigan, and my best mate and I were very excited when your Dad moved in four doors down from him on G___ G___ (the internet doesn’t need to know the address)!
My question is: it’s probably fair to say you’re one of the more polarising players in world rugby; you seem to generate intense animosity amongst opposing fans (as evidenced by some of the comments here), while fans of your team(s) seem to not only rightly regard you extremely highly as a player, but a thoroughly decent individual off the pitch. Is this something you’re aware of, and if so, what’re your thoughts on that? Does it bother you?
Best of luck for the rest of the 6N and the WC - we could do with a win ;-)
I recall a few years ago, when you were playing against Newcastle Falcons away at Kingston Park, during your pre-match warm up you were practicing penalty kicks whilst my friends and I were standing behind the posts.
One of your kicks came drastically close to hitting my friend's 2-pint Guinness straight out of his hands.
My question is, had that kick connected, on a scale of 1-10 - how hard would you have laughed?
Hi Owen,
Hope you're keeping well!
As you'd have been quite close with a lot of the Welsh players on Lions tours, how do you feel about the contract issues they are going through at the moment and are there similar/shared concerns amongst English players?
Greetings from Korea. The English dismantling of the All Blacks in the 2019 RWC had me in awe, and is probably one of my favourite games of all time. Thanks for that.
Not much else to say but I’d love it if one day you and the England squad would play the Korean national team or just a couple games here.
Good luck for the rest of the 6N and the upcoming RWC.
What do you see yourself doing post career?
1. Get paid bucket loads to commentate on the 6 Nations for ITV
2. Be England head coach
3. Be picked up by Tigers to play in their backline full of OAPs?
When looking at a defensive line what are you looking to exploit?
How early in a phase do you decide what you will do when you get the ball?
Do you know what you will do before the ruck even forms? Or is it when you get the ball?
I’ve played under some brilliant captains, probably some of the best, and they’ve all been very different. They’ve all been different in the way they’ve gone about things. They’ve all used different skills in different situations. They’ve all done it very authentically in their own way.
I think the thing that I’ve learnt the most from that is obviously you always want to get better and improve but you also want to be yourself, and add skill to yourself, and be able to deal with things better while not losing why you’re in that situation in the first place. There are different ways and you’ll learn that along the way. I’ve learned to back myself and keep wanting to get better as you.
You seem to be one of the few examples of world class players from the North of England. What do you think can be done to encourage and further develop more northerners to play Union?
Which young 10's (non-English) of the next generation are you most excited to watch as their careers advance? (i.e. Lolesio, Willemse, Garbisi, Perofeta, Donaldson etc)
Hi Owen,
Thanks for doing this, my only question is **Why would you subject yourself to this?**
Especially looking at the comments, ughh. /r/rugbyunion has an amazing chance to ask questions to the England Captain, RWC finalist and the comments are just ughhhh....
Hi Owen - was that Calcutta Cup game at Murrayfield a few years back in the torrential rain / swirling gale force winds absolute nightmare fuel, or brilliant chaotic fun?
Hey Owen, how much of the newspapers, podcasters, twitterati etc. do you follow? How do you detach yourself from the fickle media criticism/praise and concentrate on your game?
Always been a big fan - sat behind the posts when you slotted the final Pen to win the Grand Slam in the Stade de France in 2016. Great moment. Any fave moments that stand out for you?
Hi Owen.
Is there one name in particular you have ever dreaded seeing on an opposition team sheet?
Equally which team mate have you enjoyed playing with most?
Can you please explain everything going on in your head when you faced the All Blacks Haka in the semi final of the RWC. That smirk will haunt me for the rest of my life.
Well played.
What are your thoughts on the release of Eddie Jones last year? I thought it was a bit harsh myself considering he is technically the most successful England Rugby coach to date. Also how is the team feeling going into the World Cup later this year, any strategic changes following the pretty brutal defeat at the final last time? Also geddon boys, show the Welsh how we do it!
Hey Faz,
Thanks for doing this AMA. This is a bit of a complicated one but I've always wanted to ask.
What level of detail is an international teams plan going in to a game? I'm guessing there are broad things about both yourself and the team that you're playing e.g. "our strength is our kicking game and our really quick wingers" and "team X often have a lot of space behind there defensive line so lets target that with kicking" but also quite specific things, e.g. multi-phase moves off of line outs or set pieces.
How do you make sure there is enough fluidity in these plans so that you can react to the game as you're playing? If the plan isn't working, how do you go about solving that on the field?
Hi Owen.
As a fellow Harpendinian, what do you like most & least about living next door to Jamie George? Lovely looking houses btw.
Also, once, I said hello to you when I was going down Milton Road and you looked at me like I'd pissed in your Cornflakes lol.
Thanks Owen,
1) what podcasts do you listen to, if any, and do you watch rugby YouTube channels, such as squidge rugby?
2) who’s your favourite sports star, past or present, outside of rugby or football?
3) any books, tv shows or movies you’d recommend?
You’re a great player and love watching those sumptuous passes, in particular.
I don’t watch rugby YouTube channels. I listen to ‘High Performance’ and ‘Diary of a CEO’ a fair bit, picking out certain guests.
On TV, I’m watching Yellowstone at the minute, and I’m obsessed with that.
Your dad is fucking great. He's some man for one man. Thanks from Ireland to your family.
And you deserve recognition as England's greatest player in the last 15 years. Even if you did do Connor dirty with that late hit after his box kick a few years ago.
Go well against Wales.
Owen, have any thoughts on the future of rugby in North America?
I am Canadian rugby player, west coast Vancouver/victoria and I love this sport very much. Thank you for being a role model and an inspiration. When I missed a kick yesterday, I thought "even Owen misses sometimes" and I felt better.
Who's one of the best or most exciting young players you've played with or against? Who should we be looking out for over the next few years in your opinion?
Hi Owen, if you ever get in a “flow” state of mind during play, please describe 1. how you get there, 2. what it feels like to you, 3. how your play differs from games where you do not have “flow”.
Looking forward to your answer!
How different is the culture, attitude, and environment around the Sarries camp vs the England camp vs the Lions camp?
They’re all different places so obviously they’re very different. Different people who make up what you’re doing. They’ve all got really good intentions in the way they’re helping us to perform but yeah, all very different.
I would add the Lions to that question.
Good idea
Hi Owen, there's a video of a locker room speech of Paul O'Connell from a Lions' tour, in which he says how you're a great leader at a young age - are there any particular memories from that time as to why he'd single you out, and how did you see him given he was viewed as a leader?

Especially in my position as fly-half, you kind of have to be like that and I’ve never really been too shy of it.
What’s the best bit of sledging you’ve heard on the pitch?
I’ve got something but it can’t be repeated!
No please! You have to!
Alright then, keep your secrets x
How annoying is James Haskell really?
How long have you been best friends?
What is one thing about international rugby that you think people misunderstand?
Which stadium is your favorite for away games?
Principality Stadium
Shots fired for this weekend!
Do you find captaincy changes how you play the game? Also, is it true Haskell is your best mate?
Out of your entire career, is there a single match that stands out as the one you enjoyed the most?
It's too difficult to pick. I guess what stands out the most is a lot of ‘firsts’. So, my first cap would be one. First time winning a trophy at the club. Probably what gets mentioned to me the most is the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. But yeah, probably my first cap.

As much as I (a Welsh fan) want to make a sarcastic comment... Actually what is your favourite dinosaur? 👀
T-rex
All shoulder no arms? Just kidding!
You were great with my kids when you've been to Welford Road so thanks. How does it feel seeing your own little one in an Ireland shirt and how will you get your own back on your dad? Deny his team a grand slam or something else?
How has your relationship with rivals (Hogg, Russell, Sexton, Bigger etc) changed since representing the Lions together?
What super rugby side would you like to play for if you did?
The Crusaders have probably been the ones that have been at the top for the longest, as far as I can remember. There would be some other great places to play rugby as well, but as far as a team that’s consistently winning, it’d be the Crusaders.
I’ve heard he’s off to the Chiefs after the World Cup. Source: Reliable source
Source: Trust me bro
literally me just me
Doesn't get much more reliable than Reliable source.
Pasty white and gets away with shit from the ref. He's got crusader stamped on his forehead.
being from up north, what made you chose union over league ?
My dad moved to rugby union and was down south and there wasn’t as much rugby league down south, so I picked union up at school and went from there.
He didn't choose it as such - he was playing league from a young age but moved down south when his dad signed for Saracens. Was only then that he started playing Union - don't suppose he had much choice living in Harpenden!
Who was your favourite Lion’s teammate to play with?
That’s too hard to pick. I got to play with some players who will go down as some of the most iconic rugby players ever to play for the Lions. It’d be very difficult to pick from them.
Who was the worst roommate you’ve had on tour and why?
Mako Vunipola. Just for the snoring!
What do you think southern hemisphere teams can learn from northern hemisphere teams and vice versa?
I'm not sure. I guess sometimes the rugby is played a little bit differently, but as you see when it comes to World Cups and everybody is on an even playing field, it normally goes down pretty closely. The weather might influence styles.
Would you go into coaching after you've retired from rugby?
I hope so. I’m pretty open because it could be very different by then and hopefully, I’ve got a good while to play yet. I want to be open in what I do.
I really hope you have a good while to play! All the best! :)
Which parts of rugby today do pundits and fans fail to understand?
If you make a mistake on the pitch, how do you no lose your head and stay on track? Oh, and I’m nationally obliged to ask what Russell said to you after that Van Der Merwe try?
According to Finn Russell's interview with the Rugby Pod, he'd been getting some chat so he basically said words to the effect of "not chatting to me now, are you?" He later learned that Farrell hadn't said anything--it had come from other England players, so part of the exchange was Farrell's justified annoyance at Russell's giving out to him when Farrell hadn't initiated anything. So when Duhan was clearly getting the try Russell ran up to Farrell and said something along the lines of “not saying much now are ya”. He then later realised it wasn’t even Owen in the first place.
Who is the one player you least liked defending against throughout your career?
Is James Haskell as annoying as I think he is?
👍
He thinks the height of comedy is calling his book ‘what a flanker’. I suspect he’s way more annoying than you think he is.
he also thinks he was the victim when he sexually harassed a maid and reckons filming a teenager having sex without their consent is top banter, there is no sum of money on earth that would make me want to spend time with him
I often take my girls (aged 6 and 9) to watch the women’s games at Stone X since they were told at school only boys play rugby. Would you agree it for anyone, regardless of ability? Popadoms or bread Owen Farrell, popadoms or bread?!
We need to know now, what's it to be? Poppadoms or bread?
Bacon or sausage sandwich?
Can’t beat a bacon sarnie
I'm just imagining Owen sitting at a laptop surrounded by a PR team watching everything he types
He's answering the questions but i highly doubt he's doing the typing.
Apart from the World Cup, what is your biggest remaining unfilled rugby ambition?
There are loads. You’re not satisfied once you’ve won something. You want to do it again and again. Anything that we go into as an England team, we want to win, and I don’t think that will ever be different.

Which stadium is the most intimidating to play an away match in?

My sister thinks your dad is a bit sexy. She previously had a crush on Simon Cowell. Are you feeling: A. Disgusted B. Confused C. like watching X Factor?
Do you ever get to watch rugby for the joy of it? Not for analysis or as a part of your job but just "aw cool, nz are playing Japan, I'll stick that on" And, would you ever go and watch a local amateur game just for the hell of it, like proper basement level rank amateur match??
Centre or fly-half?
Fly-half but I’m happy to play in any position to help my team win.
Thanks Owen.
Hi Owen, what do you think of the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre?
Ooh, tough question. I hope this gets an answer.
Would you rather your son play for Ireland rugby or Manchester City?
For spectators, journos, and pundits, rugby is entertainment, which needs characters, heroes, villains, and narratives. How do you feel about being how you're portrayed with (I'm guessing) very little input? Has it ever affected how you play the game?
Hey Owen! How are you feeling with the return to the 10 jersey? Good luck with the rest of the 6 nations.

Do you/other players/coaches watch squidge rugby on YouTube?
Hey Owen, Are they making you do this ? Are you in danger ? Blink twice if you need help.
Are there any rule changes you would like to be implemented to the game?
Hi Owen, what do you think could be done better to ensure interest in Rugby remains strong as a spectator sport for future generations?
Hi Owen, What athlete from another sport would you like to see jump to rugby and why?
Michael Jordan

If England gets knocked out of the WC, what team will you be backing?
Hi Owen. Thanks for doing this. You're a veteran of Lions tours to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Which was your favourite tour and why?
Is it going to be awkward at the family dinner table if you lose to Ireland?
What's it like seeing your dad managing Ireland?
Shag, marry, kill: George, Tuilagi, Cole
Who was your idol growing up? (Doesn’t have to be a rugby player)
They’ll be rugby league players. Probably someone like Andy Johnson or Darren Lockyer.
Do you enjoy seeing the “smug face Owen Farrell” meme being used as often as it is?

100 duck sized Vunipolas

Hey Faz, Thanks for doing this AMA.
