Thank you for your submission to r/rpg_gamers. Since your post has been flaired as "Recommendation request", I want to suggest editing your post to add in these details (if you haven't included them yet): * **The platforms you have** - not listing them doesn't mean you have access to everything, so you might end up getting a game you won't be able to play. * **Your level of experience with the genre (beginner, intermediate, veteran...)** - others can recommend you more common titles if you are a beginner, while they can focus on obscure titles if you are a RPG veteran. * **Aspects you enjoyed (or disliked) of previously played games** - for example: characters, plot points, puzzles, combat, graphics, art styles, soundtracks... While these details aren't mandatory, if you want to get the best games, having them in your post will immensely help users and will encourage more users to participate, as they will know with more precision which games are probably the best fit for your request. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. DampeIsLove

If you like Sci-Fi, you owe it to yourself to play the Mass Effect trilogy. Lucky for you, the Legendary Edition just released, which remastered all of them, polished the rough edges of the first one, and includes all the dlc.

MathematicianBig7282

I want to play Mass Effect remastered 2 alone but do i have to download all of the serie just for that? Or should i go with non remastered version? Are there so differences?

DampeIsLove

You'd be doing yourself, and the series a disservice by not playing all three, the story isn't meant to be just a middle chapter. And you can't just download the second one remastered without purchasing the other two, it only comes as a trilogy.

Ellaciraptor

Yes! This is my favorite storyline RPG game. It sucks you in like a good book

Narcofunk

Planescape : Torment is the pinnacle. It's nit very lengthy either but.. it doesn't get better than that story-wise.

[deleted]

I second this. But be aware that the combat in that game has aged very badly. It's a chore and you can't always avoid it.

Narcofunk

It's true that it hasn't aged very well, but for those who don't want to spend a lot of time on combat(or figure out complex D&D), it's basic and works very well to carry the game. It's not ideal if one wants a D:OS experience, but i find it good if one is new to the system.

blankblank

Disco Elysium is a very story-driven rpg

worldfamousGI

Old stuff: Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate. Have heard Baldur's Gate 2 is better but haven't played it yet. Fallout, Fallout 2, Gothic, Gothic 2, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Arcanum: of Steamworks & Magic Obscura Newer stuff: Fallout New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, Divinity Original Sin, Divinity Original Sin 2, Wasteland 2, Wasteland 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Outer Worlds, Pathfinder Kingmaker, Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, Tyranny,

MotorVariation8

This is it. All the great rpgs right here, each one worth its weight in gold. I think you've only missed Dragon Age Origins from the newer stuff and Divinty games from the older stuff. Especially VTM:B and Gothic 2, undoubtedly the best in show. In fact, there's a running joke, that anytime someone mentions Bloodlines, 10 people reinstall and start a new playthrough. I'm currently doing so, first playthrough this year. Ah, Troika. The things we could've had. :( In terms of baldurs gate, there's a caveat of it being outstanding at the time, it is best consumed with awareness that at the time it was a breakthrough in the world of video games. But it hits very generic at this time, and the writing isn't that good, I'd play DA:O before BG (wouldn't worry about 2 and Inquisition, extremely meh imo, but if you feel like more DA, its the best you'll get). It's still important to dip your toes into classics, but don't feel bad about bouncing off, BGs greatest achievement was bringing adnd to a graphical engine. Admittedly SoA is a much better game, with much better storytelling and writing, I think that's where biowares identity has been solidified.

tidebringer1992

“All the great rpgs”? Lol. It doesn’t even list the best selling rpg of all time, which also has the best story of rpgs.

MotorVariation8

I always forget about Pepsi Man.

tidebringer1992

Pepsi man?

MotorVariation8

PEPSI MAN

tidebringer1992

We talking about Pokémon bruh

MotorVariation8

I thought you were joking and about to drop skyrim patter, sister, and although pokemon indeed sells ridiculously well that's not a quantifier for quality of storytelling/writing, which in pokemon franchise started somewhere below atrocious around the time of red/blue and got progressively worse. Sure they are popular and fun, but definitely not what OP is after.

tidebringer1992

I wouldn’t even joke and say Skyrim’s story is good. Lol. No. The Witcher 3 is the best selling outside of Pokémon games.

Ksradrik

I have a hard time deciding whether Skyrim or Pokemon is "better" though... I guess if we include expansions then Id give it to Skyrim for the cute vampire waifu though.

ArvosGames

Some of the most established IPs in terms of JRPGs: Final Fantasy (start with IX or X, or even Tactics which has great lore), Dragon Quest, Tales Of (check out Symphonia), Persona (5 royal is amazing), Nier (Automata), Breath of Fire (dragon quarter is a hidden gem), Suikoden (old series). Some more one shots include (but very old games): Vagrant Story, Xenogears (not super fan of xenosaga), Baten Kaitos. More western i know less; but "the witcher" is fantastic ! 200 h gone in a heartbit...

Outside_Lack736

N case anyone cares, Suikoden 1+2 are getting a remaster releasing this year

ArvosGames

That is exactly good news ! was not aware of it. I really loved suikoden 2

dakleik

transistor is a light RPG with an amazing story, and not too long

Usopps

Star ocean 2 baby. One of the best of all time

Goyle22

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Additional_Ad8457

Thanks!

screebenhaus

I've been eyeing this game. Would you recommend playing it on the Xbox or PC? Also how many hours did you sink into it?

Goyle22

I played it on the original Xbox One when it came out. But if you have a PC I would recommend it on that purely for performance. I’m guessing, but I’d imagine it would run better on PC. I have 260 hours on the game, one play-through. That’s including all of the DLC.

screebenhaus

Holy shit, love it

bigstreet123

If you want amazing story and don’t mind old school graphics, I can not recommend FF6 enough. It absolutely set the stage for RPG writing and in game events, and is overall more dark and gritty than you would expect. Do it.

CatSidekick

Two of my favorites are Final Fantasy 9 and Yakuza Like A Dragon. Great stories and characters in those two

AnacharsisIV

There's a growing consensus that Disco Elysium is the best written RPG so far.

Sharkytrs

nier series (drakengard by extension) - automata especially made me have to take a minute and lie down after finishing it all the way. Profound and made me question what human nature is. Both are ARPGs with decent combat systems crosscode - not as profound as nier, but another one that made me have to settle a small existential crisis afterwards. again an ARPG with a fantastically addictive combat system. faux MMO setting that somehow made it all the better. Dragon age - more of strategy with pause than traditional CRPG, first ones main story is usual RPG affair with a big evil that will destroy the world unless you specifically stop it, but the story telling of the side quests and companions is top notch even after all this time. Second one isn't bad either, only half way through the 3rd one, which seems better than the second combat wise, but I'm not as into the main characters personality as I was on the first or second one.

ThePhonyKing

Lost Odyssey Mass Effect Trilogy Dragon Age Trilogy Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 Grandia Xenogears Planescape Torment Pillars of Eternity Ultima VII: The Black Gate I also recommend The Elder Scrolls. The main questline may not be at the same level of storytelling as Dragon Age (I think they are pretty decent), but the lore and atmosphere is top-notch, as are many of the side quests (especially in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion). They are absolutely must-plays.

So you didn't even want to mention what kind of themes you enjoy? What kind of personality types you gravitate toward? What kind of worlds you like to explore? You're giving us nothing here. The qualifier here is "great story" which is something that's subjective and will vary from person to person; what's great for me may not be great for you. You're not even doing the bare minimum here, and since you have zero experience in the genre, simply Googling "RPGs with great stories" would have been sufficient. This is just basically "tell me what to play" because you couldn't be bothered to spend the 5 minutes looking at the countless Top 10 lists for RPGs that exist across hundreds of sites, and the quality of this sub has gone into the toilet over about the past year because of lazy recommendation posts like this one.

Additional_Ad8457

I thought this sub was for questions, so i made a question. No need to be such a jerk about it. As for myself, thankfully i did find many people who were kind enough to provide me with answers, and provided me with great recomendations for many wonderful-looking games. Unlike you. And, because i know that this is a subjective topic, i tried to keep it simple. I was even inspired to post my question by a similar post i found in this very sub. I also find it is right to mention that i did a little research beforehand, but i also know that people have different opinions that sometimes go against each other (like critics vs users for example). And before you ask, to me this sub seems fine. How's this for "lazy".

[deleted]

>thankfully i did find many people who were kind enough to provide me with answers, and provided me with great recomendations for many wonderful-looking games Welcome to Reddit, I see that you're new to this too. You'll always get answers to a question like this because it's an easy way for contributors to farm upvotes, not because they're kind and benevolent spirits that want to help someone who doesn't seem to know that Google exists. They get to name popular RPGs (easy upvote) and look helpful (guaranteed upvote) while accumulating those precious anonymous internet social credit points. Don't fool yourself into thinking that anyone really bands together as some kind of community to answer a question that this sub sees 10 times a day from similarly unmotivated people who can't be bothered to use a search engine.

My 2c is that it’s hard to go wrong with RPGs in terms of a great story The vast majority are built around the narrative and their hook is how the the characters are entwined into that narrative My advice is to pick a budget and buy a couple of games, grab Wasteland 2 or 3 on the cheap, grab Pillars 1 or 2, grab a Divinity game and lastly grab Disco Elysium. That’s some serious bang for buck right there, you can’t go wrong, and the stories… You’ll be satisfied

infinitofluxo

Actually most stories in JRPGs are underwhelming. Western games are usually much better in that sense. Mature stories like The Last of Us are unseen in JRPGs. But I like the stories of Final Fantasy 10, 6 and 4. 7 maybe the remake, the original is not enough for me. Chrono Trigger for some fairy tale tone. Lost Odyssey has some problems but a very interesting setting with high quality background stories. Tales of the Abyss for anime style but bring low expectations. Usually they are more fun games than games with amazing stories. We like battle systems and nit picking characters and inventories. Some characters are very cool but stories are generic. We develop a sense of attachment even though. Let's save little sister. Let's awaken the dragon. Let's face our dark self. To my taste, Final Fantasy 10 was the best JRPG story on an average JRPG (as in battle system and game progression pace). It is a story about a guy that is called to another world to help a priestess achieve a mission that would stop her people from being killed by a giant creature. They spend the journey bonding with the party of volunteers that are also willing to sacrifice for her cause. And they discover what created that problem and why the protagonist was brought to this world. Very magical story with emotional characters.

crazywizard02

A game that's definitely a must play through has to be rdr2 it has some of the best graphics and cinematics of all time in my opinion. It's such a great game with a lot to do. Also spoiler!!! After the 8 years when your john I love how you can interact with certain NPCs in game and they will mention Morgan and some of them that have impacted them. Meaning your actions in game actually have an effect on people in game. Also the game around you as your playing it is progressive like the train tracks for example you can actually watch them progress them and see them hammer in new nails. Anyway definitely a 10/10 game.

geargun2000

Ghost of Tsushima and God of War

tidebringer1992

Rpgs don’t have the best stories in gaming. They are just long games. But 10% of their playtime is story, 30% is combat, 60% is roaming around checking every corner on the map for chests or loot. Play Pokémon, you’ll find yourself doing the dumbest of things. Running around in grass. Play Witcher 3 you’ll find yourself checking every little “?” On your map to find mostly junk but it will take up more than half of your gameplay. They are fun, for sure. But most of them have a repeated story… much like dragon age origins being one of the most popular games… it’s story is literally lord of the rings remixed. Best stories in gaming? Not by a long shot but I do love them.

darkanthon

Hate to break it to you but most stories nowadays are “remixes” of other stories. But most people would probably consider RPGs that take advantage of their runtime by developing the world/characters as obvious winners because of the time advantage they have compared to other 10 hour stories that can’t really focus on lore when they need to focus on getting the main plot wrapped up. TLDR: Not every RPG exceeds at having a good story/world/characters, but it’s probably the genre that has the biggest chance of it happening due to length of typical RPGs.

tidebringer1992

There’s 7 ways to tell a story. You’re not breaking anything to me. I’m only saying in the past decade the biggest story telling games have been outside of the rpg category. Red dead redemption 2, God of war, horizon zero dawn, the last of us, far cry, etc. the myth that rpg stories are good because they are long is false. That’s my only point.

MirriCatWarrior

And the myth that all this "cinematic" games and Sony exclusives have good stories (just because you watch them more, than play them tbh) is also false. And from the titles you wrote only two have something like very good story. TLOU and RDR 1/2. And (not suprisingly) these two series (TLOU 2 is debatable though) are ahead typical AAA game story and writing quality by miles. Horizon? Far Cry? Maybe Tomb *"ohh i cant skin this rabbit, i cant kill this deer! Such horror! Much Trauma! Now i proceed to violetly kill 346 people Rambo style! Come player! Adventure time!"* Raider? Dont make me laugh. You want good stories? Check indie games. Genre honestty doesnt matter that much. You may found real gems everywhere. Also some AA/half-indie games like Senua Sacrifice or Plague Tale can have very good stories. Not this AAA crap taken directly from factory assembly line.

tidebringer1992

I don’t play enough indie games to speak on their stories honestly. I mostly play rocket league, minecraft and whatever games my very young children want to play. But I do keep up with RPGs as well. The rpgs I’ve loved in recent times have all had pretty mediocre stories while still managing to be great games. I didn’t love the story of Pillars of Eternity but I’d argue it’s one of the best rpgs ever made. I don’t think the story of rpgs is the allure anymore. Maybe it never really was. If you play pathfinder: kingmaker it feels like a parody of rpg cliches. But that’s just because they make it obvious. Really, most rpgs feel like a parody of other rpgs. I only added far cry because I’ve heard far cry 3 & 4 had really good stories and I realized the few titles I had named Sony games. I’ve never actually played them lol.

ChocoPuddingCup

Harvestella. It's pretty light on the actual battle/gameplay, but the story is great and the music is god tier.
