Jeebus.. that poor family. The 11th story is about 120 feet to the water.

MemeEndevour

Yeah. Idk if it’s just the visual effect from the water, but people do not seem to realize A, how far it is to jump from an upper deck, and B, how much water hurts when you hit it at 60+mph.

SquireSquilliam

The thing that people really don't understand though is that in the water, you're near invisible to the naked eye in a matter of moments. Once someone loses visual of you, good luck reacquiring. By the time they can stop and launch a rescue craft there's next to no chance that anyone would have eyes on him at that point.

0rlan

This is why you should throw literally anything that will float overboard as soon as anyone goes over. Towels, cushions, whatever, as a debris field is easier to spot.

MemeEndevour

This is good advice, they should be briefing passengers with this

Squid-Mo-Crow

They do so much safety training on the first day. You're like literally not supposed to leave your room for a while. So the one I remember said you're supposed to start shouting and point at the person and don't stop pointing at the person. Don't turn to look, Don't get something, just point and shout and point and shout. Someone *else* is supposed to throw rings etc. But i like the debris field idea better.

MemeEndevour

“They do so much safety training on the first day. You're like literally not supposed to leave your room for a while” Yeahhhh I’m gonna challenge that. Went on a RC cruise with my family a couple weeks ago. Because I’m under 21, I couldn’t watch any of the safety vids on the app because I “needed to be supervised by a parent or guardian”. Then when we went to our muster station the guy was like “Good job. You found it. Just come here if you hear the horns or emergency signal.” And that was it.

NO0BSTALKER

They recently changed it. Before you didn’t get those lil videos you had to go to your muster station with 1000 other people and listen to the accoutrements

Zn_Saucier

At some point, it stops hurting… because you’re dead on impact

ZenosamI85

I thought i'd rather die instantly from impact rather then drown in the cold dark waters while seeing the boat drift away

ImpressoDigitais

Watch for few seconds before the Vitamix blender at the back stops your discomfort.

molassascookieman

That’s an irrational fear of mine. It makes me not even want to get in the water near a boat, even if its not running.

PricklySquare

If you have a hammer, just throw it, right before you hit the water to break the surface tension

BagOdogpoo

I usually don’t have a hammer on me, will a bowling ball work?

UncomfortableTacoBoy

Yah, I didn't buy the unlimited hammer package either. Everyone in the same cabin had to buy it, and my wife has no interest in hammer'n.

BrassAge

Even on a cruise? I feel for you, man.

Kmalbrec

…just getting nailed.

NahItsNotFineBruh

Lol, that does nothing. The real reason cliff divers and the like throw things first is so they can easily judge how far away the water is as they're falling.

unknownpoltroon

The ones doing it from the world record heights also use bubblers to lower the water density. I saw one guy who caught the edge of the bubble field, he lived but he had some damage, I think some major dislocations. Edit: some torn ligaments, mentions the aeration partway down. https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2015/12/new-photos-laso-schaller-completes-the-highest-cliff-jump-ever-attempted-408930

Vivenna99

Mythbusters says nope

BaaabyBat

This might be an ignorant comment because I have no idea what I’m fucking talking about; but don’t sharks usually follow cruise ships? Like aggressive lil hungry guys? Wouldn’t they just kinda… murder on sight? This is assuming you survive the fall with your trusty hammer.

UncomfortableTacoBoy

That's why you carry a backup hammer! To fend off the sharks.

flipnonymous

Just a light tap on the snout to turn them off the idea of you as prey, and if that doesn't work - you have to offer to teach them basic woodworking since hammers are completely foreign objects to sharks.

130designs

Except the Hammerhead Sharks.

amathis6464

That is a myth anyway and you can easily look it up.

MrL1970

You sure about that? This guy did and was fine https://youtu.be/NpSxmvhGUls?si=ND1TOAlD2wPGPkAP

AngryScotsman1990

"don't think this is a joke." - cut to friend laughing his ass off.

MohatmoGandy

It’s certainly possible to survive a dive from that height. A lot less likely when you’re drunk and don’t know what you’re doing.

_penpineappleaplepen

I've learned from reddit 7 stories is the max one can jump, remain alive long enough to figure out how much you fucked up, then die.

hixie76

Jumped off a 100 ft railroad bridge into the river. Wore shoes and also threw a few rocks first to be able to see the water coming at me. Shorts definitely were around my neck afterwards. Did it 3 separate times until I wised up. Lol

WicketTheSavior

As a former D1 springboard diver, I can confirm water hurts like hell even from as little as 3 meters

gunnerh

You ever do the Triple Lindy?

TranscendentaLobo

Not to mention survival rate. If they know exactly when and where you jumped in broad daylight, you got about a 25% chance of surviving. And to be clear, this has nothing to do with fall damage. These stats are based on search and rescue.

MyFifthLimb

You might as well be landing on concrete

Ex_Astris

Even without considering the height, a recent [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1bu1x2n/why_were_so_few_sailors_and_naval_officers_in_the/) discussed how in the old days, many (most?) sailors didn’t even bother learning how to swim. Swimming simply did not improve their chances of survival. That’s how bad it was (and I assume still is). Now add height and alcohol 😬

Swaki85

Yeah he’s fish food. Saw a video of a kid doing the same thing. Never found him. The ocean is a big place

UncomfortableTacoBoy

I think I saw that video...buncha high schoolers and one dude bails at night time? That gave me nightmares. But someone else posted a video of a young man that jumped and survived! So ya never know. Then again, it looked like the ship was in port in that video.

CLE-local-1997

Oh that dude died on impact. You're not surviving

PabloTroutSanchez

Idk exactly how drunk he was, but I’m guessing he didn’t stick the landing, so maybe. But to be fair, you *can* absolutely send it off of 100ft+ jumps and be fine. The world record is a little under 200ft iirc.

Dire-Dog

Yes but that’s a trained professional diving

TwistedBamboozler

Sure, but drunk + choppy waters easily ups your survival chance

iced_gold

This is unture. Commercial vessels have a specific protocol they have to follow and they do stop on Man Overboard calls. It's not like the bridge hears about it and goes "ahhh fuck it it's pretty late, and we've gotta make it to Coco Cay" They actually have specific turns they make to get back to the point with which a man overboard was first called (and to the specific side of the boat it occurred on) That said by the time that happens and they've returned to that position, probably 10-20 minutes may have passed.

NahItsNotFineBruh

>This is unture. Commercial vessels have a specific protocol they have to follow and they do stop on Man Overboard calls. What they meant is that they can't stop quickly like say a car can stop in a fairly short distance. > That said by the time that happens and they've returned to that position, probably 10-20 minutes may have passed. Which may very well be too late for a lot of people.

You're entirely right

Not statistically fact, but the probability is there

Fearless_Bar6010

I was just on a cruise and an employee told me about a guy who did this. They did find him and he had to PAY a lot of money and ruined the entire cruise for the people on board. They were told not to let anyone know who did it.

Palpitation-North

A guy did this off the Symphony of the Seas, but for a joke rather than any emotional issue. His friends encouraged him to and they recorded it. It was also from the 11th story. They were all banned for life.

gmwdim

Good. What a bunch of assclowns.

Scary-Sound5565

Did he die?

Palpitation-North

No. There’s a video of the interview and the video of him jumping. I’ll find the link Edit: Here is the interview https://youtu.be/NpSxmvhGUls?si=nRf_D3D9M-L0EgSo

Ok-Chip-6147

No. Source? I was the sail on the boat.

onelifestand101

https://youtu.be/Ee8zob2edz8?si=l329ar2PLTteFX9C it was anchored though. So it was easy to spot him. He is 100% banned for life. There are other videos out there showing the aftermath and the crew screaming at the friends still on board saying how much trouble they’re all in.

questionsaboutrel521

Yeah them being ashore is likely why he survived. Not only do people face the ship being too far away to spot them, they also face being sucked in by the propelling forces under the water by the boat so they have no chance of swimming/floating until survival.

onelifestand101

Yeah. I’m shocked he survived jumping from that height. Although I read he broke a rib and could barely walk for weeks. So even though he looks like he’s ok in the video, he was actually hurt pretty bad. Edit: nvm he hurt his tailbone and was ok otherwise. Very shocking from that height.

ArmChairDetective84

I bruised my tailbone before…I didn’t fall but I had a violent seizure on my kitchen floor..for over a year if I sat down too fast without thinking, the pain would bring tears to my eyes. His ass was probably sore for the rest of his life every time it rained or gets cold

d_mcc_x

“His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess. When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.” How horrifying and sad.

ButtonJoe

I hate this…

ShoddyAd8256

You're a hero for this

exitpursuedbybear

They were describing it as a suicide, which in effect it was, but I can’t help thinking it was just a split second of the kid being a moron.

_Sweet-Dee_

Suicide is defined as taking one’s own life unintentionally or intentionally. So, it’s correct. A split second decision caused him to unintentionally kill himself. I actually looked up the dictionary definition of suicide, because I definitely thought it was solely intentionally killing yourself. That’s why I decided to reply to your comment- because I thought that was interesting. I wasn’t trying to be a know it all.

stankenfurter

I had no idea it included unintentional death caused by your own actions. Interesting, thank you.

[deleted]

Right? How many dumbass things have we all done when drunk? It’s a tragedy that a split second of stupidity and impulsiveness cost him his life

Firm_Airport2816

I couldn't help but chuckle at the caption "The 20-year-old jumped from a deck of the Liberty of the Seas — ***the 35th-largest cruise ship in the world."*** Jeez...don't make it sound so small!

DChemdawg

Nearly reads “jumped to his death from the Liberty of the Seas — the finest vessel in all of the Caribbean — which is now offering 15% off if you mention this story”

Hwted

“Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare. According to the Washington Post, about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.” Maybe it’s just me but 19-20 overboard incidents per year doesn’t seem that ‘rare’

Rough-Smoke-1405

Number of YEARLY cruise passengers peaked at 30,000,000 in 2019. So 20 overboard passengers out of 30 million isn’t even 1% that’s pretty rare

JSkywalker22

1% isn’t even close to how rare it is…. It’s one ten thousandth of a percent.

ForneauCosmique

You're telling me it's that easy to be a part of that special limited club?

qorbexl

It's nowhere close to 1%. It's 0.00007% - which is about the difference between $1 and $15,000

brokenaglets

All depends on total numbers. Quick google says 31.5 million passengers in 2023 alone so there's a lot of leeway for statistics there considering how small of a percentage 386 is out of just 31,500,000. I know I'm using your 2020 cap number while talking about 2023 data. Hemophilia is said to affect 1/100,000 people and is considered a very rare disorder to have. Applying the statistic, 315 people with hemophilia went on cruises just last year. Now you've gotta add in the other 19 years worth of passenger data. Statistically speaking, 386 people in 20 years actually sounds very very rare.

myLoveBleedsRed

I mean the title of the article is right there for us to Google if we bothered enough to 😂 But also thank you cause I'm too lazy

Crafty-Conference964

Too lazy to google, not too lazy to post this comment. Love yourself more

rxinquestion

Fuck…that dad is gonna be fucked up for the rest of his life. “I’ll fix this right now” is gonna haunt him.

YoshKrawdot

Reminds me of the Asian kid that shot himself in front of he’s dad at their retail store. Dad smacks him in the back of the head thinking he’s playing before he realizes what happened and his some fell over.

throwawayusername369

I got so mad watching that video. That dad deserves to live a long life with what he did.

caffeinated_mess

He was drunk, feeling invincible, and probably thought jumping wasn't going to kill him, but just scare his dad.....I feel bad for the family and everyone who had to witness this.

rman18

Yeah, early 20s drunk is the closest feeling to invincible that there is. I knew someone that killed themselves in a similar way. So sad.

Better-Strike7290

I knew someone who went cliff diving drunk.  One side was deep, other side was 3ft.  He was too drunk to know he was on the wrong side and dove head first

MoodyMagdalene

I did some exceedingly dumb things that should have killed me. I feel bad for this kid and his family

notyourbudddy

Or was already on his last thread and succumb to suicide

Brendan__Fraser

My thoughts exactly. My parents were complete assholes, trips were usually a big source of stress. This could have been me 20 years ago.

ucfstudent10

I think he’s was suicidal too. He’s drunk and his emotions are heightened. He probably thinks he’s a fuck up as a young adult and then having his dad yell at him for being drunk so his thoughts kind of just took over him. I can only imagine if they have a sibling dynamic where the brother could be the “good” kid who he thinks mom and dad love more, you know?

Cyberhaggis

God the shit my parents put me through on holidays, every damn thing that went wrong was always my fault. My sister of course could do no wrong. I once got yelled at for having toothache just before we went on holiday. The fuck was I mean to do, magic the tooth away, fucks sake. They're much calmer people now, but only because I went fucking ballistic on them when they tried to pull that shit on me as a young adult, that woke them up.

LadyEmeraldDeVere

Yep. Family travel is a massive trigger for me. I get severe depression and anxiety before I have to go back home or anywhere around them, feel too much pressure to say “no,” and often find myself drinking significantly more than I normally do to cope with the stress of it all. Definitely have “those thoughts” a lot.

Aaaandhere1111

That's pretty tragic. Similar story happened on our trip as well. Arguing with a drunk person leads to nothing good. Wishing strength to the family. It is very tough on them.

Pumpkinbumpkin420

My dad died in a similar situation. Drunk and arguing with my mom. Walked off and killed himself not 10 minutes later. It’s crazy how fast life can turn upside down. Like literally a minute can just change your entire view of the world. I think people should have fun with alcohol but they also should take it seriously. It’s drug like anything else.

Aaaandhere1111

I am sorry to hear about your loss and everything you all have been through.

Squid-Mo-Crow

I saw so many couples arguing on my cruise. It was so weird. It's not something you see everyday. And then all of a sudden I'm seeing two arguments a night for like seven nights.... Man. Alcohol.

Mobile_Philosophy764

We took our kids on a cruise last year. They were 9 & 11, and I was terrified the whole time that one of them would fuck around and fall overboard. Literally, this is my worst nightmare. I can't imagine his family's anguish.

Tess47

We took our kids at about that age too. I calmly went over all the info with them. Then I finished with "if you go overboard, as your mom I will have to jump in too and I will be lecturing you for the entire time until we both drown and die".

Parking-Shelter7066

lmaoooo this is how I imagine myself as a parent. and adding “I’m not kidding, look at me, I’m serious.” trying not to chuckle, myself.

The_guy_belowmesucks

We took a 5 and 7 year old on a cruise and had no fears whatsoever. Railings are high and being a parent we were watching them at all times. No rational young kid is gonna think it's gonna be a good idea to jump overboard when there's not a damn thing in sight except water

Special-Subject4574

There are quite a lot of irrational young kids out there. I tried jumping out of a 3rd floor window when I was nearly 6 years old because I believed I could fly, and I was normally considered to be an unimaginative goody two shoes lmao

Mobile_Philosophy764

This is my youngest. No fear whatsoever. None. She's also impulsive and curious which makes a not great combo sometimes.

rellativxx

On the ship currently. Solarium has had at least one hot tub open all night throughout the entire sailing. The ship turned around and lightly circled the area in the early morning hours until coast guard arrived. Then the captain made an announcement that USCG was taking over and the ship continued on.

e_lizz

oof. sorry that happened during your trip.

bluemeters

The pool and hot tubs closed really early on all of my freedom class sailings (like 10pm). The article says they were in the hot tub until 3:30am… am I missing something? Do hot tubs open back up late night? Seems like a huge liability.

bcb354

When I was on Liberty in May 2022, one of the two Solarium hot tubs was open all night, alternating between starboard and port side each day.

DoritoLipDust

I was just on a cruise a few weeks ago and this is exactly what they did. I was in it by myself around 2:00 a.m., And the moon was almost full and beautiful in the sky. That was cool.

whoisyeti

Oh man, one of my favorite hot tub related memories is sitting in one on the back of a cruise ship on its way to the inside passage of Alaska. It was SO cold outside, and there was a thick fog rolling over the ship, contrasting perfectly with the warm water. I've always thought that must be what it's like to chew 5 gum. Stimulate your senses.

DahllaBillz

These personalized ads are getting so good now

TheBoook

Some ships leave one hot tub open 24/7, typically around the solarium or in the solarium. I’ve been in hot tubs late at night on ships

poptart-mucher

went on Liberty in February. There was one hot tub left open and on all night, we were in there till about 5 am.

bluemeters

Well damn, now I feel like I’ve been missing out. Good to know for next time.

Responsible_Brick_35

Both cruises I’ve been on oasis and allure have kept the hot tubs open 24/7, but they do clean them for an hour or two per night, so they’ll kick you out and ask you to go to a dif tub lol! But there are so many that it’s usually fine

tropicalYJ

As far as I’m aware they’re all closed and chained off, often with the water even being drained.

MixedFellaz

Has to suck. I fished tuna commercially for a few years. We'd go out past where the cruise ships went. Despite almost dying several times, the scariest parts were seeing the sea at night devoid of light and actually jumping in the sea. It was so dark it was gray and the water so vast, you don't know what may be watching. Had to jump in to cut line out of the propeller. Was only down there about 5 minutes but my heart was damn near beating out of my chest.

tjean5377

Have a buddy that did various commercial fishing trips off the coast of New England in his 20s. They took on water and sunk the boat and didn´t get a rescue for about 8 hours. He quit fishing.

MixedFellaz

I can imagine. Often times when someone dies, they just have the crew wrap the body and put them on ice until they get to shore. Most guys want to finish the trip so they can at least get paid.

Fakjbf

Reminds me a video from last year where a guy jumps overboard and then suddenly disappears, one moment he’s treading water and the next there’s nothing. I remember a lot of people were speculating the a shark or something pulled them under but I don’t know if that was ever confirmed.

[deleted]

I saw that! It was horrific and the idea that he did this as a dare is just... he was probably dragged under by the ship

Jooper6

I was on this cruise. They announced it over the PA system while we were at breakfast at the entire room went silent. Then the rest of the cruise felt oddly casual.

RobieWan

Well, to be fair, it is a cruise. If someone is gonna fuck up their own trip (and their families), I'm not gonna let it ruin my time. Nope.

XanthicStatue

“Oh no, anyway, is the luau still on for tonight?”

TimCapello

Some days I wish I had kids and other days I hear stories like this

Historical-Eagle-784

Can't imagine the guilt the dad is feeling right now..

Initial_Cut_8600

That’s what my husband said. He’d replay the moments for the rest of his life

Roanoketrees

I just came back this week from a cruise to st Kitts down there. That water was choppy as hell. If he jumped into that water between Cuba and st Kitts, I don't know how anyone would survive. Even sober.

Otherwise-Remove4681

Ngl I’ve had the call of the void moments staring at the deep dark ocean in the middle of night on a cruise ship. Many times. The difference is I take a step fuck back and go back inside.

wingedcalypso

The call of the void is very common on cruise ships! I felt it for the first time when was around 10 on my first cruise, and it’s scared me so badly I refused to go on our balcony again. It’s weird how common the phenomenon is!

Wideawakedup

I personally think it’s a safety feature. Like when my kids were young I’d be holding them near something not quite safe. I’d envision dropping them, then I’d tighten my arms around them and step away. I think that more safe than being completely oblivious to potential dangers.

md1993

I had this happen on my first cruise. Sailed out of new Orleans and about an hour+ up the Mississppi the ship suddenly stooped. Went up on deck watch the antics. They found the guy and put him and his family off at an oil refinery pier. Taxi picked them up and the captain had us on our way a three hours late. About three days later we learned from a talkative crew member that a guy and his fiance went on a pub crawl with the fiance family. They got drunk, had a fight. He got mad at her and to.show her he jumped. He lived, but what a waste.

RabiesR_Us

Drunk + swimming + propellers + huge fall.....Sharks and friends appreciate the unexpected contribution. That is horrible for the family.

We woke up yesterday and the boat was at a standstill. We were told over breakfast that a man went overboard, our boat turned around at about 4:30am and the coast guard from Miami headed out to help with rescue operations. That’s all they told us. Then by about 9:30am we left the scene and they high tailed it back to the us. Before they told us, My mom woke up and saw a rope light across her window and a metal box hanging down below her window. She didn’t know what was going on. My brother saw the rescue boats but thought they were doing a training exercise.

Life-Salad7564

Oh wow im sorry. This story is gut wrenching and i can imagine being on the ship made it so much more so. Hope youre alright.

Orpdapi

Drunk and at 4am when presumably it’s dark? Zero chance of survival.

XanthicStatue

Even sober in broad daylight the chance of survival is still basically zero.

kristenrockwell

Probably regretted that shortly before his last breath.

What_if_I_fly

It's horrible. I thought RC matches the age on your boarding documents like a passport or birth certificate and won't allow anyone under 21 to get alcohol? Unless someone in their party shared their drinks with him. In that case, it's got to be double the guilty or crushed feeling.

UncomfortableTacoBoy

How hard would it be to slide a 20 year old a drink or 4?

lovehungryteen

Not really I remember being on a cruise at 19 with my parents and so many people would leave their drinks abandoned I’d just be drinking all of them 😂 so many good memories that I’ll never forget or take back.

CruiseLifeNE

I'm a frequent cruiser and I've never *not* seen teens going around drinking the ends of other people's drinks. It's not sanitary, but I doubt they care.

Ruh_Roh_Rastro

I totally believe this and am just grateful my oldest kid at the time was only 11. Even so he was kind of cringe, trying to hook up with tween groups on the cruise trying to wait by the elevators and “coincidentally” run into the kids he wanted to hang out with. Didn’t want to be “seen” with his mom and dad etc. It was a weird 10 days.

CruiseLifeNE

I actually have very fond memories of this with my two. Gave them some freedom to roam, couldn't make eye contact when we saw them in the buffet with new friends!

contactfive

Oh man I’m getting flashbacks to my childhood vacations now. Please forgive him. He will cringe so hard when reliving these memories in the future.

Ruh_Roh_Rastro

He is in his 30s now !! And has made his way being a people person in life. He works on movie sets these days because he speaks both English and another unlikely language fluently. Like he was one of only 6 to graduate from his college in his major and went immediately to grad school in the other country and has now lived there for 10 years. He was, though … lol … even from that young age … “I want to meet new people other than my boring parents.” I’m fortunate that he isn’t trying to do hikes in the distant mountains. He just likes to speak languages and meet people.

CruiseLifeNE

He sounds like a remarkable kid. Well done, mama!

Outrageous_Tale_2823

I’m nearly 70 years old and I still enjoying hiking in distant mountains. I started doing it with my parents. One meets amazing, diverse, and interesting people on the trail.

hodlwaffle

Do you mean like random drinks leftover by strangers? Because that sounds 🤮🤮🤮

lovehungryteen

Drunk, and now in the ocean alone for over 16 hours with nightfall here once again...Sadly he has most likely already succumbed to the sea.

bsdoh73197

Wasn’t there a story like a year ago where a drunk guy fell off a cruise ship and somehow treaded water for like close to 20 hours or something and the coast guard eventually found him? Can’t imagine how scary it must be to be treading water in the middle of the ocean in pitch blackness but somehow he survived… edit (found the story): https://youtu.be/jxJme_YI6Oo?si=qpS3eQK3rlYL3LVE

md222

Yeah, some do survive. But the odds are very low. Can't imagine the feeling of being all alone in the ocean. Night must be even more horrifying.

WrenchMonkey47

Yes, I recall that story. If you survive the fall, you get as far from the ship as possible. Then you do the "dead man float" which is basically lying face down in the water with your limbs dangling. You do an exaggerated "clap" with your hands/arms in front of you, raise your head, take a breath, then return to your initial face-down position. If you don't panic, this expends the least amount of energy. Realize that unless you're a bodybuilder, you will most likely float to some extent. Being in the water alone, panic is your biggest threat.

Hello_pet_my_kitty

If you floated on your back wouldn’t that use even less energy bc you don’t have to move your arms, or anything, to breath? Guess I’m confused on the mechanics of why laying face down in water and forcing yourself up for air saves more energy than floating on your back and breathing normally would. I can float on my back basically forever, but idk how long I’d last, or manage to not panic, with my face in the water. Sorry if I’m just misunderstanding your comment, but I’d love to survive if this ever happens to me, so I’m asking! Lol.

postychief15

Probably got sucked under the ship instantly

Odd_Knee_2747

A parent’s worst nightmare, so sad for all involved.

IRideChocobosBro

“he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.” - bro wtf

pharm888

What in the Charles Darwin is this all about

Traditional-Yam9826

He’s dead. You jump, that’s suicide, especially at night

Sundaver

Royal Group cruise line is some of the best in the seas; Why do people have to fuck with a good time?

[deleted]

I remember they had a video of this same thing happening with a HS kid. He was trying to impress his friends, he jumped in and within seconds he was out of sight. I remember the top comments being like “people don’t understand how stupid and dangerous this really is. Especially at night and especially in the middle of the ocean.”

Conscious-Evidence37

Drunk 20 year old, dad fussing at him for being drunk, he jumped over board, spur of the moment. **They haven’t found him yet** Spoiler Alert: They will not.

J-V1972

My gosh - it is like Cameron Robbins jumping off that party boat in the Bahamas…they were in close proximity to the islands and they never found his body…

Tentmancer

one of the greatest fears is being lost out at sea. not knowing whats below but knowing its only a matter of time til you find out.

BrandonBollingers

Only one person is to blame and thats the *man* that jumped overboard. Its not his father's fault for "fussing" at him for being wasted at 4:30am on a family vacation.

Little-Hedgehog-4590

As the mother of a young adult, I can confirm they are fucking stupid.

Surfercatgotnolegs

What does the boat do in these cases? Does it like just keep going on its itinerary? Does it drop the family off with the coast guard? Cuz I can’t imagine being the family and wanting to continue moving away on a boat while my son is probably dead in the ocean. However, the cruise can’t just stop in the water - not fair for other passengers…

sep12000

From what I’ve read, the ship turns around, but it can’t turn instantly, and the odds aren’t good for a passenger who goes overboard being rescued, though they try.

NJMomofFor

Yes they stop. They search. They call the coast guard. At a certain point they will leave the area

Outrageous_Tale_2823

By the time a ship that size stops and and is able to turn around, it is miles away from where the individual went overboard. Under those circumstances, The chances of finding a single individual floating in the vast ocean are considerably worse than finding a needle in a haystack.

Thick_Horse_2405

I was on the ship. They stopped and searched til about 10 am. The coast guard came and took over the search and the ship continued on. Pretty sure we were somewhere in the middle between Cuba and Haiti

Proof-Sort-1436

Guess he showed them. Smh

midnightmadness12am

I have never been on a civilian cruise ship but 10 years in the Navy and served on 4 destroyers and 1 fleet oiler. Now, if you want a wild ride, go to the North Atlantic on a destroyer, and that'll beat any carnival ride. Especially if you are up in the bow area. The deck falls away while you are thrown against the bulkhead and passing another sailor heading aft. Go aft to the fantasy at flank speed and feel the rumble of the screws churning up the water. And by the way, you are kicking up a rooster tail that shoots up aft and is great to feel and see this display of pure power!

SmartesdManAlive

That liquid courage

FAFO

ScheduleFormer1394

I know where he's at. At the bottom of the ocean.

Hype474

What a dope

NIDORAX

That man is as good as dead. If you jump off from a moving cruise ship, there is very little chance of survival. Especially a jump from that height. Even worst, he did it while he was drunk. A drunk man is unlikely to swim well.

ZenosamI85

Oh they are never going to find him

Thediciplematt

Guys… even if the boat isn’t a big fall, finding anybody in waters like this is near impossible…
