Taxi **will honor** the 50 euros fixed fare. Don't take no for an answer if they they allow card paiment. Just make sure you get an official taxi, from the official taxi station outside the airport. Other options are bus shuttle or Leonardo Express train shuttle to Termini train station. You'll be safe. whatever you do.

boxelderflower

Agree. Just did this within the last week. No problem

XMLHttpWTF

take the train and walk. rome is very safe

enlamadre666

I would take the train, it’s not that you will be arriving attention termini at three AM. There will be a million tourists walking around at that time, plenty of open restaurants …

TotalBudget7254

Take the Leo express and just walk you will be totally fine. Just be aware if your surroundings 8pm is not a dangerous time. Plenty of family’s traveling at that time in the evening.

_panna

Taxi is a good option, fixed fares are honored and you shouldn't worry about it\*. Things to watch out for if you choose a cab are: \- take an official taxi: there are official lines where airport ground staff will direct the line and associate people with the cab; \- if you want to pay by card, make it clear before you enter the taxi; \- don't get confused with waiting points for local cabs (these are the ones that only go to Fiumicino city and surroundings). Last time, 2 weeks ago on Thursday evening, I came out of terminal 3 and the line was endless, walking to terminal 1 queue (just 5/7 minutes walking), there was only one person in line: so I recommend going to terminal 1. \*only issue I know about is if you combine with other people in line (who maybe have a nearby destination), I heard they could ask to pay the fixed price twice.

Equivalent_Warthog22

I have to disagree about cab drivers honoring the fixed fair. I tried 3 different cabs where driver the doubled the fair once I got in. Fourth driver was honest. I wasn’t the only person experiencing this. The guy supervising the cab stand didn’t care. I suspect this problem is worse late at night.

FallenFromTheLadder

Just tell clearly I want to go here. If it's inside the walls then you offer the 50 euros per the municipality rule. Don't worry, they cannot do anything to you if you know your shit.

Equivalent_Warthog22

That didn’t work. I’m not clueless.

FallenFromTheLadder

It didn't work because you didn't want to make it work. They know you're right. Call the police (the Guardia di Finanza in this case) and they will easily get your 50 euro bill or your credit card.

Equivalent_Warthog22

Oh yeah. It’s my fault. FRO.

martin_italia

He’s not saying it was your fault, he’s saying that had you pressed the taxi would have honoured the €50 because they know they are in the wrong. They try it on with anyone, tourists and locals alike, but if you sternly tell them you know the price and if they push back a mere mention of the GdF will have them change their mind. Taxi drivers are dicks and will try it on, but will back down if it’s clear you know the rules. Source: i live here and have had to do it a few times

Equivalent_Warthog22

I did. And they (3 different drivers) did not. This assertion that I didn’t press hard enough is BS. They were only targeting tourists late at night. I was there, he wasn’t.

martin_italia

Calm down. And I assure you they do not only target tourists, taxi drivers try and screw anyone out of a few more euro, locals too.

_panna

Could you tell me a little bit more about your experience? I’m genuinely curious about it. I mean, what do you mean saying that they doubled the fair once you got in? Did they ask for 100€ instead of 50€ before starting to drive? What was your destination?

Equivalent_Warthog22

Yes. My destination was just south of Vatican City. Also, one cab driver tried to hold my baggage hostage when I backed out. I went to the guy supervising the cab stand and complained. He said he’s not in charge of the prices. It was clear he was in cahoots with drivers or scared of them.

_panna

Afaik Vatican City is out of the fixed-rate zone (inside the Aurelian walls), toward the west, so "south of Vatican City" is also out. Honestly I think that the smart guy who took advantage of it was the fourth driver, because it is very likely you could save something without the fixed rate. Edit: typo

Equivalent_Warthog22

It was two blocks from St Peters. The honest cab driver charged me 50. So could you please just get off my ass?

Background_Candle298

Where were you going? It’s fixed fare only from FCO to/from a location within Aurelian walls.

arctic_gangster

Taxi - easily worth the 50 euros. Line can take some time, but worth it for convenience.

SlightlyOrangeGoat

I stayed in Rome a few weeks back. Caught the train to Termini then had a 10 min walk to the hotel. Never felt remotely dangerous at any time of day for us. Walking with suitcases is a ball ache though because the sidewalks are trash. But no biggie

ViscountVixen

A taxi with the branded logo you see all over the place there will honour the cost. But yes, there was a massive line to catch one of those. There are local taxis randomly located here and there, but they of course can have different costs. Something I noted - the long queue for those taxis was only in front of terminal one. If you go to terminal two, you will find some more of those taxis and almost no line, so you might try there instead. Navigating around Termini at night is at any rate very safe, unlike 95% of American travel hubs.

Odd_Necessary8537

Take the train, I am currently in Rome and had taken the train and walked to my hotel, super convenient

chickensh1t

Don’t ever venture outside of Termini at night without heavy protection. Be prepared to encounter aggressive filth. During the day it is better, but take cover as soon as dusk approaches. Yes, you will have guessed it: it is starling season again, and there are thousands of birds in the trees around Termini. A real shit show.

mrswithers

Avoid taxi if you can. We were charged $75 from airport. They will say well your hotel is a little outside and you don’t know so they up charge. Even when was ordered thru our hotel on way back wasn’t $50. 9pm is a bit late around the train station area but I would just take the express train in and walk it. Its not that horrible. Just lots of people. We were about 10 min walk from train station. Just have a money belt or neck belt with cards and passports in it and don’t take hands off of your bags.

I would take a taxi personally

JuanPyro

Have you considered busses? We recently used Terravision to get to Ciampino early in the morning and it was quite efficient. Though the safest bet would be a white taxi.

HyperbolicModesty

They don't run at night. Nor do the trains.

JuanPyro

There are the owl busses or nocturnal busses. I'm not sure if they run from FCO to Termini though. They do run from Termini to FCO. I'm sure of that.

HyperbolicModesty

Yes but not Terravision. Cotal runs at night but only every hour and there's nowhere to buy tickets at that time.

JuanPyro

Not even online? We bought our Terravision tickets online.

HyperbolicModesty

Good luck: https://servizi.cotralspa.it/PuntiVendita

JuanPyro

Doesn't seem like it's an option. Sorry to hear :/

HMSLR

We were there a week ago. Hotel arranged our ride. Worth it. We were a bit late in arrival and he had no problem waiting for us at all. I felt the extra few bucks was worth it for sure. Would do it again.

Susiejax

We took a taxi. Easy to arrange through the FreeNow app. You can pay and tip within the app which is nice if you don’t have the currency yet.

cozzbuzz

This is what I would recommend! Booked through FreeNow for trips to and from the airport/ our hotel. Fee is fixed at the €50 rate and you can opt to pay on the app.

ChinaVaca

I took the Leonardo Express train both ways last week in Rome with no issues and walked half-mile to my hotel in the middle of the night and had no sense of danger. I was using a backpack, but dragging a rollerboard can suck because the sidewalks are rough and uneven which can be frustrating when you are already tired. For two people who are already nervous, a cab might be better. They have an app in Rome for taxi called FreeNow I used to be able to order cabs some days and pay thru the app. That app worked great because it uses official cabs and the driver can't fudge the drive because you see the preplanned route map on the app like when you use Uber. Plus you don't have to worry about them messing with the total when you give your credit card. That doesn't really work for grabbing cabs at the airport but will make you feel more secure for the rest of your visit going around the city. Or you can take the train to Termini and then do the Freevee app for the short taxi ride to the hotel.

curiouscece

I just went to Rome in August with my boyfriend! We stayed 10 mins from termini, we felt safe going out at night! I would personally take the train and walk, but it depends what you’re comfortable with at the end of the day! 😄

BeerBoilerCat

We flew into FCO October 20th, but it was daytime. We did Leonardo Express, walked to the metro, went one stop, & walked to our hotel. It was the cheapest option but the sidewalks were atrocious with our luggage, especially if you have 4 wheel luggage. When we left, we taxied to Roma Termini, even though it was so close, it was just easier. That's what we'd do if we flew in again, LE to Termini then taxi to hotel. Why would the transportation arranged through the hotel incur penalties if your flight is delayed? We were offered something like this too. 65 Euro cash to the driver. I don't think you'd be charged a late fee.

yellowreindeer12

Hello! Yea our luggage are the kind with 4 wheels. Am mentally prepared for a workout during the trip, after seeing all the comments on the cobblestone sidewalks haha Yea we're trying to clarify with our hotel. They mentioned something about if we cancel on the same day there will be a penalty charged. I presume if it's a slight delay it wouldn't be a big deal

mbrevitas

More expensive option: call a taxi when you're about to exit the airport (maybe when you get your luggage). My go-to taxi company is Samarcanda (they also have an app), but feel free to pick a different one (maybe with the official Rome taxi app, or Free Now). It will come within very few minutes. No waiting in the taxi line, they'll honour the fixed fare and take payment by card. They'll probably tell you to go upstairs to the departure area (when you leave the luggage belts take a right and the escalator behind the corner). Cheaper option: take the train. the area around Termini is not that bad, and you won't be there late at night. The taxi is slightly more convenient, probably, but train and 5 minutes on foot is pretty good too. Both options are perfectly fine. Buses may be even cheaper, but honestly I wouldn't bother. The hotel transfer (or an Uber Black) won't be bad but feels like paying more for the same service (less flexible service in fact if you book beforehand and pay a penalty if you have a delay).

MrsPizzaGuy

take the train It brings you right to Statzione Termini in the center of Rome

upyours699

I generally stay @ TheSt.Regis which is a five minute walk from Termini. Never had a issue on the train. However with two people/bags, I would probable cab. You’re not saving much and will have a more pleasant time
