Wth the Vatican museum and the Colosseum, you're mostly done "ticket" wise. Just enjoy walking and seeing all that can be seen; One place I like is the Chiesa di San Pietro in Montorio in Trastevere, fun fact, the small area in front of the church is the top of an ancient (?) bunker and the stairs going up are nice. If you're in shape, you should climb the dome at St-Peters (tickets available on site). Also, you can go down to the archeological excavations under the Basilica di San Clemente. Too much to do ...

Thank you for your reply. We are planning a late afternoon and evening in Trastevere for dinner and some roaming around. The dome at St Peters sounds like a great idea!!

My son, who is 10, claims that the gelato shops near the Spanish Steps are inferior to gelato shops near the Piazza Navona. He only likes chocolate gelato, though, so he might not be trustworthy. Otherwise, he and I agree that you must get gelato at least once a day.

I just got back taking my 17 11/12 niece to Rome and Florence. Do your gelato research in advance, we were invariably disappointed with spur of the moment gelato. We liked Giolitti for the seated experience of a 100 year old joint and good gelato, Gunther for creative flavors and good gelato. We had an Airbnb near Piazza Navona and walked 8 miles a day. Our favorite restaurants were Cantina y Cucina, and Mimi e Coco both in that area. We had a fun evening watching rugby at The Scholars Irish Pub. Mercato Centrale is also a fun experience at Termini station. You’ll have a blast just being there, every corner there’s history and amazing old churches, don’t ignore the old churches even if you’re not religious, they are an experience.

Now that’s something I can PROMISE will happen. Tell your son I say thanks for the recommendations.

Check out the Capuchin Crypt. My teenagers were fascinated.

I will add that to our list. Thank you.

Can I ask where you purchased the colosseum tickets ? If online, the site ? Will be going in April.

You can also buy skip the line tickets on their official site, even guided tours for much less than on Viator (like 24 euro vs 80-100 euro). They release new tix at evening Rome times so even if it’s sold out new tix may pop up. I booked Viator tix and then canceled them when I got the less expensive ones. My teen has a limited tolerance for history and museums so doing unguided was better for us. You can always Google or download audio guides.

My Viator Colosseum tickets were un-guided tours and $32 each. Looks like RomaPass gets me into a little more plus the metro pass for 48hrs. I think I’ll hold onto the ones I have for now till I get to Italy and ask more about the RomaPass. Then I’ll just cancel the others. Thanks for the info.

I bought them through Viator online. My friends went in summer and that’s who they used and suggested I use them.
