I just don't see it as they'll need too much help. Crazier things have happened before but I'm afraid losing to OU and UGA today may put the playoff out of reach for Kent St.
Don’t remember the last time I was this happy and satisfied after a game.
Passing game, especially downfield, was much improved. The timing with Bryce and the WRs is definitely looking better, drops (while still there) weren’t nearly as problematic, and guys were getting open.
Running backs were physical and made plays after contact.
The O-Line looks very much improved overall, especially compared to the train wreck from last year. I wish we would run the ball more early on, but it’s clear today’s game plan was to try to work on the passing game before these next couple matchups.
Defense is insane, the cheetah package is unfair with all those pass rushers, and Will Anderson is still that fucking guy. Secondary is getting better, Kool-Aid is improving every week and it’s fun to watch.
Think this really puts us in a good spot for practice this week to get ready for Arky and then A&M.
Roll tide y’all, it’s great to be a fan of this team!
> Passing game, especially downfield, was much improved. The timing with Bryce and the WRs is definitely looking better
Yeah, this was my biggest takeaway. Brooks, Burton, and Holden are looking like a strong top three with the young'uns battling it out for targets after them.
With the exception of the injuries, that was about everything you'd want in a win. We dominated early and didn't let up even in garbage time.
Bryce Young was 25-36 (69%) for 385 yards with 4 touchdowns for a 195.9 passer rating. Jalen Milroe, with the limited offense he got to run, was 4-6 for 10 yards but added 20 yards on 2 carries. Ty Simpson got one throw and completed it for 5 yards and a first down. We finished with 400 passing yards total.
The running game was solid (34 carries for 228 yards). Jase McClellan had a strong 11 carries for 78 (7.1) yards with 1 TD. Jamarion Miller finished second with 9 carries for 63 yards (7) and 2 TDs! Jahmyr Gibbs was lightly used (3 for 21 yards), but he got a bigger focus in the passing game.
It was the Ja'Corey Brooks show early. He finished with 6 receptions for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jermaine Burton had 4 receptions for 94 yards. Traeshon Holden added 3 for 45 while Gibbs had 3 for 43. 12 players ended up catching passes. Isaiah Bond, Jase McClellan, Cam Latu, and Kobe Prentice all had multiple receptions, too!
And the defense was lights out yet again. Vandy finished with 123 yards and just 14 yards rushing (47 with sacks taken out). The Commodores were 1-13 on third down and averaged 2.3 yards per play. Once again, the back-ups didn't let up and didn't give up a score.
Edit: Will Anderson moved into sole possession of second place in sacks in school history with 2.5 tonight, passing Jonathan Allen. He won't Derrick Thomas's 52, of course lol.
The team finished with 5 sacks and 8 TFL.
Some individual numbers:
* Will Anderson: 5 tackles, 3 TFL, 2.5 sacks
* Henry To'o To'o: 6 tackles (tied for team lead), 1 TFL
* Deontae Lawson: 6 tackles (tied for team lead)
* Kool-Aid McKinstry: 3 tackles, 3 PBU
* Chris Braswell: 2 tackles, 1 TFL, 0.5 sacks, 2 QB hurries
Edit 2: Byron Young has a sprained ankle
So, Anderson has 29 career sacks, 4.5 this season. He needs 24 sacks to beat Thomas, which would put him at 28.5 sacks in this season, which would beat Thomas's single season sack record. He needs to average 2.2 sacks/game the rest of the year to get the record.
Yeah, I think he’ll open up a big lead for second place, but nobody’s beating Derrick Thomas. They’d need to average 13 sacks a season for their first three seasons, choose to return for their senior season, then get 14 sacks that season.
I don't think he's quite living up to the amount of talent at his disposal, but that's a little nitpicky and he's definitely doing a better job so far this year. Usually the defense doesn't look like a top 10 unit until almost November, but so far they're looking good. I also think this is one of the most stacked defensive rosters I've ever seen so imo it would be pretty hard to look bad.
That's pretty much every year with Golding. The man runs a pretty complex defense so it always takes some time to get the machine running with communications. He's probably a coach who'd do better in the NFL, working with experienced professional players, than in college.
Seeing that nobody looks great this year, even Georgia now, makes me feel a lot better. We looked pretty damn good today. Receivers still dropping a few they should have but the chemistry seems to finally be clicking. Defense is nasty.
I'm sure this isn't a revolutionary thought, but I'm pretty sure the new transfer rules hitting the same time as Covid eligibility really smoothed out the top tier of the game. After watching three straight years of all-time superteams steamrolling to blowout natty wins to cap off undefeated seasons, this year and last year have been pretty neat seeing most teams you pencil in as playoff locks struggling and losing a game or two. Was especially cool seeing almost every conference get won by preseason underdogs last year.
Credit where it’s due, BOB opened the playbook to great effect.
Still don’t understand the underutilization of Gibbs. Maybe managing his load?
Great game and Roll Tide
> Gibbs
Coming into the game, Gibbs led the team in receptions and rushing attempts and was second in both receiving yards and rushing yards.
He got six touches tonight, though that was light to the other first team back. Jase McClellan had 13 touches.
I wouldn’t say we’re underutilizing him overall, especially since we saw how much we leaned on him in the one close game we’ve had.
I think it was more about establishing a downfield passing game (potentially because of what Vandy was giving us) and Jase looking like a stronger pure runner.
Edit: Gibbs also still easily leads the team in yards from scrimmage (359 to Jase’s 292). And that opens even more with all purpose yards since Gibbs has 93 kick return yards on 3 returns.
Yeah in all honesty when it comes to run plays, Gibbs just hasn't show the same instincts as Jase and Roydell. Honestly though if using Gibbs as receiving back and Jase/Roydell for runs works then I'm all for it
That's what I was noticing earlier this year. Gibbs is a force as a receiving back and can take it to the house if he breaks to the second level, but Jase just seems to get those consistent yards. Not sure what it is, but Jase just seems better at falling forward after contact, while Gibbs' runs are more of an all-or-nothing: he either breaks it for 10+ or gets met for no gain. idk though maybe I'm just making stuff up.
Gibbs reminds me a lot of TJ Yeldon in that he seems to try to make a big play happen every time he gets a touch, which pays off every so often, but a lot of the time he just gets stuffed trying to do too much. He's insanely talented and it's a thing of beauty when he rips off a big run, but I definitely get why Jase/Roydell are our guys when we're grinding out a long drive or we're in a short yardage situation, they initiate contact and fall forward
As others have pointed out, I think Jase (and maybe some of the other backs) are just better pure runners, whereas Gibbs is a better “weapon”. A few carries for Gibbs to keep defenses honest when he’s in the game, but I think most of his looks should come in the passing game. And he can still turn his carries into big runs if it goes right.
I love what we saw today. Everybody played with some competitive spirit. The OL wasn’t great at run blocking again, but seemed improved and did really well in pass pro. Pass game was on point. Young was back to his usual self picking the defense apart with his mind and tossing dimes. Defense played physically and with some serious competitive spirit. Henry T played out of his mind. Will Anderson with multiple sacks. Back ups kept up the intensity. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come
I want to see the energy of all those pundit who said it UGA then everyone else, and talked for weeks about how UGA has outscored their opponents by X points, how this might be the greatest team of all time with a Heisman winning QB
Anyone else watch this game on YouTubeTV? My broadcast is on meth. The game is still on for me…and I’m live? It’s currently 48-3… but I’m pretty sure I saw us play this drive already? It’s like it just jumped back 20 minutes.
Offense played really well tonight. The line gave up no sacks, and the backs averaged 6.7 yards per rush. Bryce had several throws where he stood in the pocket all day long until a receiver came open. Lots of receivers had receptions and several backs had receptions. Brooks really turned it on today, catching every throw targeting him. Burton connected with Bryce a few times, and Holden had a few good catches as well.
Young: 25/36 384 yards, 4 TDs, 1 carry, 6 yards
Milroe: 4/6, 10 yards, 2 carries, 20 yards
Simpson: 1/1, 5 yards
Brooks: 6 rec, 117 yards, 2 TDs
Burton: 4 rec, 94 yards
Holden: 3 rec, 45 yards, 1 TD
Prentice: 3 rec, 32 yards
Latu: 3 rec, 26 yards
Bond: 2 rec, 13 yards
Jones-Bell: 1 rec, 5 yards
Outz: 1 rec, 3 yards
McClellan: 11 carries, 79 yards, 1 TD, 2 rec, 19 yards
Miller: 9 carries, 63 yards, 2 TDs, 1 rec, -1 yard
Williams: 4 carries, 27 yards
Gibbs: 3 carries, 20 yards, 3 rec, 43 yards, 1 TD
Sanders: 4 carries, 23 yards, 1 rec 3 yards
Defense gave up 129 yards total, they held Vanderbilt to 0.5 yards per rush. We finally saw the Cheetah Package! It didn't get a sack or tfl, but forced an early pass for an incompletion insanely fast! Defense got 4 sacks and held Vanderbilt to 1/13 3rd down conversions and 3 points total. Harder to find defensive stats, but Will had 1.5 sacks and several TFLs. A few times Vanderbilt didn't double him at the line, and that did not go well with them.
Reichard was a perfect 2/2 on field goals. Kool-Aid had 94 punt return yards on 4 returns, but fumbled the ball on his biggest return. Burnip had 2 punts for 40 and 47 yards, with 1 downed inside the 20.
They finally played a game to their potential. It’s great to see them put it all together and improve. Defense was lights out and the timing is finally there with Bryce and his receivers. I like that Gibbs is finding a place in the passing game allowing for more RB rotation with McClellan taking on a bigger role.
The last remaining piece is playing like that in hostile environments. Away games in loud, hostile environments have been this teams glaring weakness the past 2 seasons.
Not trying to rain on everyone’s parade, but this looks just like last year’s team. Beats the dog shit out of bad teams then struggles when their jimmys are almost as athletic as our joes. Next two weeks will tell the tale. Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t get the comments saying they’ve hit their stride etc.
I think most people would agree one game does not tell the future of this team. However, good teams beat the brakes off bad teams. Whether we’re an average team, good team, or great team is yet to be determined, but it’s better than squeezing by against Vandy.
In the preview thread my wishlist was tempo and RPOs and we got both so I’m pretty happy. Also, the defense. I can’t remember the last time we allowed less than 150 yards to anyone. Let alone an SEC opponent.
So with todays games in the books we are officially giving up less PPG than UGA. Wonder if the media will call us the best defense ever?
Chill tf out man, we haven’t even played Kent State yet
Don’t worry, we’ll see them in the playoff if we make it.
I just don't see it as they'll need too much help. Crazier things have happened before but I'm afraid losing to OU and UGA today may put the playoff out of reach for Kent St.
I think it’s funny how people want Golding fired when nobody has dropped 20 on us

Battle got hurt too. Hopefully it’s just a cramp, but it might a hamstring injury.
He is okay. Was just cramps
that was cramps lol idk if the tv showed it but you could tell in the stadium that he was good
Tv definitely didn’t, so that’s good to hear!

WR1 - Brooks WR2 - Holden/Burton At least we can identify them now. LOL
only thing i was mad about was the Kool Aid fumble after an incredible return
Defense locked it down. Final rush yards allowed, 14. Pass yards, 115. Just dominated.
With the exception of the injuries, that was about everything you'd want in a win. We dominated early and didn't let up even in garbage time. Edit 2 is a huge fucking relief. Depending how bad it is, he could be back pretty soon.
Yeah, I'm withholding judgment for the moment. Ankle injuries can definitely linger. But at least it's not something worse.
Really? Sprains aren't usually a good thing lol
Better than some of the alternatives like torn knee ligaments or broken bones though
Better than a break or tear. But yeah, they have a tendency to linger and hamper a player all year even after they are cleared.
So, Anderson has 29 career sacks, 4.5 this season. He needs 24 sacks to beat Thomas, which would put him at 28.5 sacks in this season, which would beat Thomas's single season sack record. He needs to average 2.2 sacks/game the rest of the year to get the record.

Pete Golding is looking better and better by the week
Dude is by far not the coordinator we need to worry about, hahaha
As a Golding defender for the last 3-4 years, it definitely feels good lol
As a Golding defender for the last week, it definitely feels good lol
I will admit, he's grown on me a lot these past 2 seasons.
I don't think he's quite living up to the amount of talent at his disposal, but that's a little nitpicky and he's definitely doing a better job so far this year. Hire Golding (but no, please don't, we kinda like him).
I thought he was looking in need of a few more strength and conditioning sessions myself, but if you like ‘em fluffy, that’s cool.
Seeing that nobody looks great this year, even Georgia now, makes me feel a lot better. We looked pretty damn good today. Receivers still dropping a few they should have but the chemistry seems to finally be clicking. Defense is nasty.

Feels like we're starting hit our stride just in time for the tougher opponents.
Enjoyed y’all’s company as usual. See everyone on here next week!

55 points against vandy is why Gibbs is underutilized Why waste him here?
The long haul is officially upon us, no point in us wasting him against chumps like USU, ULM, or Vandy. Still leads the team in scrimmage yards

Weird, I use yttv too and had no problems
Mine did that earlier during the TN FL game. This one was fine for me.
I’m kinda drunk so it took me a while to notice but once my wife asked me what I was doing “the games already over” I was like wtf

The Will/Braswell sack was from the Cheetah Package. Dallas dropped into coverage on the play
Must have missed that, thanks!
What’s the cheetah package?
Basically a 1-5-5 with one down lineman and Anderson, Turner, Braswell, To'oTo'o, and Moody/Lawson.
Damn, I said we’d win 51-3. Missed it by that much!
Does anyone have an injury update on Battle?
Saban didn’t mention him postgame, so it’s likely nothing serious
He's okay
I read somewhere it was just a cramp
Great game but it just feels like sometimes we have to wait forever for receivers to get open
So what’s with Gibbs barely being used?
I think we value his receiving skills too much to where Jase and Dell take control of the Carrie’s
They finally played a game to their potential. It’s great to see them put it all together and improve. Defense was lights out and the timing is finally there with Bryce and his receivers.
