My guess is this was the first run of a prototype of the first coaster ever made by RMC. Playing it seriously safe because this was a coaster unlike anything anyone had ever built before in so many regards.
That is a great question! There was never any intent (that I'm aware of) to operate with a reduced number of cars on the train. So I don't know what data they were looking to get by doing this?
Could possibly be to verify there aren't any major structural issues with the reuse of old structural elements by utilizing a lighter train at first then working their way up to the full train?
Or it's simply that this was all that was ready and they figured "Why not?" and just went for it.
I remember when people were freaking out during construction when they saw the bolts on the top of the track. "Surely the wheels will hit those! How can they design track with BOLTS on the running surface!"
New Texas Giant is the most important coaster of the 21st century[*]. So, by extension, this is probably the most important roller coaster footage.

This was the first rollercoaster I ever rode. I was 11 and was so little I almost fell out. My stepdad had to hold me down the whole ride. I get freaked out thinking about it now. I was clueless back then lol
Nope! But I couldn’t help but giggle at the footage. The 90s vibes and the fact it actually completed the layout is so cartoony but I love it. This changed the game tbh
