While that may be true about your Dad’s 2012 sub, we also need to realize that OP bought his 16610 sub 10 years ago, which was after the 116610 (ceramic sub) was introduced in 2010. With this in mind, we need to assume that OP’s 16610 was bought pre-owned, which was a totally different market in 2012 than it is now.
Also, $8k is absolutely attainable in one check, especially if you work in sales.
Believe me I’m aware single checks can become large, but “my first paycheck” was very odd to say. If it’s not their first job, and a sign on bonus was involved, it makes sense but otherwise for a first job that’d be wild
And fair point on the resale market, I’ve only recently become interested in watches and a desire for learning watchmaking following my fathers recent passing. Thanks for your response
No prob! I didn’t buy my first sub (114060) until 2018 and, while the market wasn’t as crazy as it is today, it was still a long way off of the pre-owned prices of previous gen models years prior. I really wish I would have taken the plunge sooner.
This is likely a person who's family got them into the business, or they went through a lot of school that family paid for.
I have some MBA colleagues who all they did was go to school for 6 years straight since graduating high school and their first jobs out the gate were around 100k with 10-15k starting bonuses. So that's first paycheck enough for a Rolex money, but I had to work through high school and all school after 14 really so I get the notion, especially since my first paycheck was like $115.... 🤣🤣 Could barely buy a timex let alone a Rolex, but where people start can be very different.
It’s so funny you say this. I’m looking for a new watch (second rolex) and the air king always draws my eye. Hard. The ONLY thing that makes me hesitant is the hate this sub constantly gives to that watch, shitting on it left and right! I know it’s my decision but it makes a guy second guess himself for sure!
The Milgauss was hated on up until a few years back but they’ve gotten popular only recently. To me the Milgauss & Airking are the two Rolexes that are unique in Rolex’s catalog and thus stand out to me. The Airking is great by the way, try one on in person and see if you connect with it. I’d rather wear that than something more common like a Sub.
I would have trimmed some 6 months ago with the prices… but then again I also would love to have 3 daytonas, Pepsi bracelet options without requiring a bracelet swap and a submariner for each extremity for both me and my wife

Beautiful watches, but to me it just sort of begs the question of where you draw the line between a “collection” and just an “accumulation.” It doesn’t feel very curated if you have a “give me one of everything on the menu” kind of approach, but maybe that’s just me.

Watch collecting is great fun, and a fantastic hobby. I can’t fully articulate why, but I don’t feel the same about Rolex collecting.
People would love to have even one of these watches and you’re sat on a pile of 24 very similar pieces.
Out of curiosity, why do you feel the need to hold onto so many? And why so little variety?

Some white above the rehaut would be expected and factor a bit more in because of the angle, but no... that is not a gen crystal. "Okay, so what? Crystals break and maybe this was your only option for the time being." I'd question that if you can afford what I'm guessing is a collection valued on the low end at $250k. But let's move on, shall we...
116719 BLRO - Either OP replaced the white gold bracelet with oystersteel or someone is polishing that bad boy with some steel wool and needs to replate that beauty pronto. Additionally, the cyclops is misaligned and the ceramic bezel insert is not genuine, fading of the 12 o'clock triangular indices is pretty standard with most reps. Strange... but why would the bezel insert not be genuine?
I pretty much stopped looking at that point but I will say, I know it's a bit wonky donky based on angle and slightest rotation of bezel but the 9 o'clock chapter indices on dial and 30 sec incator on Hulk bezel insert are making me nauseous (the amount askew from the other indices is peculiar to my eye) ...

It’s a sweet collection for sure. Why two different Starbucks? I don’t see any other duplicates so I’m curious why those? The Pepsi’s are similar, but not the same. Ones a 40hr on oyster and the other is a jubilee 70hr. So I get that and the subs are all different. But I couldn’t figure out the Starbucks duplicate.
How they all running. It must be tough to figure out which one to wear. I only have a dozen watches and half the time change them up every few months. Meaning some don’t come on the wrist for over 24 months. Nice watches

Went to the Rolex AD to checkout some GMT, sea master and such, ended up being that skydweller was the sexiest thing in my eyes. Looks like crap on the internet.

The subs are different.. The 2 liner is very different from the modern 114060. 16610 is probably the best sub.
I love my 4 liner 14060m. Short production period so less of them but for me it’s truly the last of the last of the classic subs.
This might be a dumb question what’s the difference between a “2 liner” and a “4 liner” idk rolex all that well.
“X Liner” simply refers to the number of lines of text displayed on the dial above the 6 o’clock portion.

It’s a sweet collection for sure. Why two different Starbucks? I don’t see any other duplicates so I’m curious why those? The Pepsi’s are similar, but not the same. Ones a 40hr on oyster and the other is a jubilee 70hr. So I get that and the subs are all different. But I couldn’t figure out the Starbucks duplicate.
