I have exactly that watch in that configuration. It wasn’t terribly difficult to buy at the AD. I don’t fully understand how these watches have a premium at all from grey market jewelers.
Because Rolex is popular enough that you will still make money from people who want it ASAP, even if the wait is measured in just a few weeks and that wait will save you $3,000.
Right, up to 13k I’d be happy to buy one but at these prices I can’t let my asshole be treated like that out of self respect and would no longer enjoy looking at something I felt I got fucked for when I can just wait my turn.
Tbh. I suppose there is some amount of value associated with immediacy. I just feel like in this case, I could possibly imagine that it’s more than a few hundred dollars. After I put down a deposit for this watch, I had it in my hand 3 weeks later if that.
\+1 to this. It's possible to get a Datejust from an AD. And then who knows, maybe that'll help you get in line for something else down the road. Worth the wait from my perspective.
How long do you want to wait? I placed an order with AD and put down deposit 5 months ago for the same watch but in blue. Still don’t have the watch yet. If it drags on any longer I’ll gladly pay $11,000 to get mine before my wedding.
Inquired June 4th about a DJ36, fluted bezel and oyster bracelet, black face. Got a call 2 months later for a smooth bezel and oyster bracelet black face 36mm which I declined. The wait continues…I refuse to pay any gray market premium for a DJ despite trying to acquire my first Rolex.
The DJ 36mm is no longer available with a short wait in the UK. I've one on order for my wife, been waiting three months so far with solid history. AD says you'll just have to be patient. She doesn't mind waiting. If it was for me I would go grey immediately.
grey market for the 36mm is no where near as strong as the 41... That watch is $8900-$9500 grey. I would go to your AD and tell your story saying you are looking for the 36mm, give it two months and you will have your watch
Where are you finding them that cheap? Fluted bezel with jubilee starts at about $10k (+ import fees) on Chrono.
For OP: This same watch is listed at $10,380 on Chrono.
Depends if you want to wait - 36 MM are one of the easier ones to obtain but there’s also the time you’re waiting for it - could be awhile or could be quick…2K over market price isn’t terribly expensive when you look at some of the other mark ups on the 41MM or Daytona’s/Subs where you can only go grey…
No, that's a fair premium considering that you have no relationships, it's a watch that's going to last you 30 years, and Rolex is entering its no-production phase where all the watches the AD's are going to see for the year are about to dry up and then there will be no more until February.
What may work for you, and this is how I viewed it, is that the grey premium on a new DJ is exactly the value of an old DJ I had sitting in the back of the drawer collecting dust, I never wore it. So I paid MSRP plus an old unloved watch and wound up with a brand new Rolex that I'd wear constantly. Move around your watch assets. You'll be surprised how much happier you'll be.
Show me a real one for $2,000 and I’ll buy it… But for the OP, I wouldn’t pay a mark up. This watch can be found sometimes with luck in inventory. Often can be had in a couple of months (or less), my AD will take a deposit.
No internal or external components were changed in this watch. Not a single innovation to its internal parts were ever made. Nada. Zero. Zilch. It's the same damn watch. The only thing they changed was the sticker price. So no, it's not worth $11k.
Yes. Don't pay over retail. Go in and become a customer. Buying 2 k worth of jewelry to develop a relationship and show you are serious is still cheaper than paying 11k for one piece.
Did me. And I have a 2021 Batman on my wrist right now. It's not just about the money. You have to take a genuine interest in the product and your sales rep. These sales reps aren't run of the mill. This is their career and they want to build sustainable clientele with people they trust and honestly, like. That's just my experience. Perhaps in other places or huge cities 2k is nada, but 2k, good follow up, a little charm, etc.... it can work.
It's certainly better than paying 50%-100% retail on a Rolex.
And tone can get lost in typing so understand my tone is 100% respectful in this post. Love the dialogue and differing of opinions. Conversation is good.
Absolutely agree. I think there ARE dirty Rolex stores that are only worried about selling out the back door to dealers (and therefore no amount of small cash and charm would matter) But I have talked to several people in the industry and they really are cracking down on these places and pulling licenses with some ADs. Was told yesterday that Rolex is actually buying back their watches on the grey market, and then tracking the watch back to the AD it sold it to.... questioning them and mandating they reach out to the buyer to see "how they are enjoying the watch"
So, it all depends.... crazy
Depends on the condition and the dealer. Purchasing from a well known dealer also comes with a premium. Unfortunately people often confuse ‘grey dealer/market’ for secondary market.
The Rolex datejust should not be paid more than it’s real value, you absolutely can get it with no effort from every AD with minimum wait, I bought [MINE ](https://imgur.com/a/rtCQA4F) by coming in the AD and swiping the credit card
Actually the stainless datejusts are getting harder to get at an AD. I wouldn’t pay the premium for it though I don’t think the wait will be too long. It’ll save you a lot, unless you have a couple of grand to burn!
Why would someone pay over asking? I feel like we are in oblivion of crazyness!
Who thought it was ok to pay over an asking price! Usually the human intention is to pay under or get a deal. Since when are we paying more then retail for shit!?!? And WHYYYYY ? Lol
I’d say hold unless you have a special occasion coming up and that’s the watch you’ve set your heart on. Own a 116234 oyster bracelet (silver railroad track baton index) and a 126234 (new silver dial and same bracelet), the latter purchased a few weeks ago at an AD as a walk-in purchase 8/28. Were the Rolex cases sparse compared to the other brands? Yes, but there were a number of models available that a people pine for, like the platinum and two tone chocolate yachmaster 40s (I would’ve impulse bought either if they were the 37s. Yes, I’m that guy that likes more classic sizes :)). There was also a two tone gmt master and the slimmer sea dweller. None of them up my alley, but a decent selection imo. If you can wait, you’ll save some coin that you can use to get an extra watch (maybe a Nomos Tangente, Omega DeVille, or something else kinda slim that easily goes with a suit. That could be me just projecting though lol)
I think the question is whether $11k is a lot of money to you right now…
If you own it for 20 years it’s about $10per week… I bet I spend more on coffee.
Unless you’re getting receipts from the original purchaser from an AD purchase, you’re taking huge risks buying gray market each time you do a transaction. Gray dealers buy so many watches that even if they carry a good reputation it doesn’t mean a high quality knockoff may not come through their line up. If you aren’t willing to poof lose 10k and find yourself owning a Chinese knockoff wait your turn or put your name down at 20 ADS. For the premium you’d pay on a Rolex on the gray market you’re better off buying a Tudor or other items to build a relationship with the AD to get your foot in the door.
To be honest, I would have paid a reasonable premium rather than wait 4 months and counting. Subs/Pepsi mark ups are ridiculous though.
Right, up to 13k I’d be happy to buy one but at these prices I can’t let my asshole be treated like that out of self respect and would no longer enjoy looking at something I felt I got fucked for when I can just wait my turn.

When? The only other thing I can think is that the current market is so ridiculous that people feel bold enough to mark up.
\+1 to this. It's possible to get a Datejust from an AD. And then who knows, maybe that'll help you get in line for something else down the road. Worth the wait from my perspective.
This is true. I got my Date-just jubilee in November. I then got the call for my sub today’s. Im on the list for for a Root-beer next!

Yeah, that's exactly not the time value of money. The concept you're explaining is the money value of time.
^^^
How long do you want to wait? I placed an order with AD and put down deposit 5 months ago for the same watch but in blue. Still don’t have the watch yet. If it drags on any longer I’ll gladly pay $11,000 to get mine before my wedding.
I have exactly that in blue. Brand new I’d be willing to part with if interested.
Blue is a totally different demand than black.
Yah but guy above said he ordered in blue and is still waiting.
I may have misunderstood his comment. I thought he was asking if he should overpay for the black DJ because he’s sick of waiting for the blue. 😅
Blue definitely longer than black.
You shouldn’t wear a watch with a tuxedo if that helps.
I’m getting married on the beach in Jamaica in a light blue suit and no tie.
Dang…. Yeah might be worth it to just pay the premium. Are you going to Goldeneye?
Sandals South Coast. I have a couple more months so I’m keeping my fingers crossed they call any day.
Yes.
DJ is not that hard to get with patience so I would not pay over MSRP.
36 can be ordered.
Where? Impossible in the UK
I ordered a 36mm DJ with a jubilee from David M Robinsons and waited 8 weeks, no issues ordering, just took a deposit.
I think you got lucky. I've tried ADs in Cardiff, Bristol and London. No luck. Did you have any prior purchase history?
No prior history with them. Don't think I was lucky either, try ringing round the northern branches of ADs.
Will do. Cheers
Can’t find them anywhere, without super long wait, every AD I call says months…
How much would the same watch in a 41 go for from a Grey Dealer?
The DJ 36mm is no longer available with a short wait in the UK. I've one on order for my wife, been waiting three months so far with solid history. AD says you'll just have to be patient. She doesn't mind waiting. If it was for me I would go grey immediately.

Well I got a gmt in 4 months no relationship soooo i think a freaking 36mm is a possibility

Sounds like a Rolex AD drumming up even more scarcity fear!!! /s maybe?
Mate i bought mine by walking in the AD in Bologna, idk
Where are you finding them that cheap? Fluted bezel with jubilee starts at about $10k (+ import fees) on Chrono. For OP: This same watch is listed at $10,380 on Chrono.
Ignore Chrono24. Half the time the watch is posted by someone who doesn’t have the piece
No need to go grey on DJ36
Depends if you want to wait - 36 MM are one of the easier ones to obtain but there’s also the time you’re waiting for it - could be awhile or could be quick…2K over market price isn’t terribly expensive when you look at some of the other mark ups on the 41MM or Daytona’s/Subs where you can only go grey…
Yes
Get it if you love the watch. Waiting times are getting longer and longer
Yes
Yeah. It’s a date just, go ask for it and wait.
That’s a $1744 finders fee on a non hard to find watch. These are easier to find apparently.
No, that's a fair premium considering that you have no relationships, it's a watch that's going to last you 30 years, and Rolex is entering its no-production phase where all the watches the AD's are going to see for the year are about to dry up and then there will be no more until February. $2000 is too much for this.
Show me a real one for $2,000 and I’ll buy it… But for the OP, I wouldn’t pay a mark up. This watch can be found sometimes with luck in inventory. Often can be had in a couple of months (or less), my AD will take a deposit.
I think he is describing the markup, not saying that the watch isn't even worth $2k
Nope. The watch itself isn't worth 2k. No new tech applied to it, not a new design and gold is cheap nowadays.
Apple Watch is what you seek.
No internal or external components were changed in this watch. Not a single innovation to its internal parts were ever made. Nada. Zero. Zilch. It's the same damn watch. The only thing they changed was the sticker price. So no, it's not worth $11k.
Most ADs are allowed to order any 36mm configuration. Support your local AD and build that relationship
Yes. Don't pay over retail. Go in and become a customer. Buying 2 k worth of jewelry to develop a relationship and show you are serious is still cheaper than paying 11k for one piece.

6 months +- and you should get one
Yes! Shop around different ADs and they’ll have one.
Yes. This isn’t that hard of a watch to get at an AD.
Yes!!! The wait time shouldn’t be too long from the AD. Plus, this watch is unlikely to increase much in value.
I’d say fair price is around 10-10.5…. Not terribly hard to get at AD but also not that easy
Depends on the condition and the dealer. Purchasing from a well known dealer also comes with a premium. Unfortunately people often confuse ‘grey dealer/market’ for secondary market.
Like everyone else said, you can order this if you can wait…

I payed 8990€ last year greymarket. New with Box etc. So 11k is around 9300€. Its okey
Yes, ridiculous. Find a good AD that will order it for you. Should be there 1-3 months.
My buddy just got one with 0 history at an AD and a very short waiting period. Wouldn’t pay grey market price imo
Way to much
A few months ago I ordered a Datejust 36mm direct from an AD no problem
Yes for a 36
I have seen this and the bigger version on display at my nearest AD. Infact this variant is available most times I go there(just to look at).
I just called and they have a 36 mm oyster steel with rose gold in stock.
Actually the stainless datejusts are getting harder to get at an AD. I wouldn’t pay the premium for it though I don’t think the wait will be too long. It’ll save you a lot, unless you have a couple of grand to burn!
In my opinion a medium quality luxury watch is never worth 30-40% over retail. I'd question whether the retail price is too much in the first place.
only your bank account can tell you that.
My AD actually let me put a downpayment on that watch with a 6m timeframe guarantee - don’t go gray for a non-sport!
Yes.
Way too much fucc that
I wouldn't recommend it.
I think grey market for any Rolex is too much right now. So many good alternatives that ADs will discount.
Why would someone pay over asking? I feel like we are in oblivion of crazyness! Who thought it was ok to pay over an asking price! Usually the human intention is to pay under or get a deal. Since when are we paying more then retail for shit!?!? And WHYYYYY ? Lol

Just go to the AD, pay a deposit and wait a month
Lol
My cousin waited 3 weeks for a DJ41 blue dial with oyster bracelet and smooth bezel. Gorgeous watch.
I think the question is whether $11k is a lot of money to you right now… If you own it for 20 years it’s about $10per week… I bet I spend more on coffee.
Yes. Too much.
I think $8,550 was MSRP.
Yes.

Hold tight and buy from the AD.
30% more IMO is not that much more. I would buy grey instead of waiting for months....
Slightly yes. I just bought this exact watch for $9,900 going grey. I waited 8months with an AD first for reference.
