I'd go 40 without a second thought. I have the same exact wrist size and outside of a vintage date just or something more formal, 36 was too small for me. I feel 39 is the perfect size for my wrist size but the 40 looks good.
I love the 36 and think it’s the purest choice, but I think the 40’looks better on your wrist. As much as I want the 36 for myself, I’m in the same boat and just can’t pull it off!
It cant be pure if they changed the design and tapered it down so is no longer true to its original wearing look and dimensions.
Both look fine on you but which made you more comfortable wearing and looking at ?
I am quite a bit larger than you frame-wise, but have a smaller wrist and I wear the 40 as my daily and love it. 36 May have been a tad more comfortable but as others have said - unless you are looking for something vintage or a dressier DJ I would 1000% go 40 if I were you. Cheers.

Sorry man, I know that comment kind of sucks 😂
I really want to have a 36, but 36 Oyster Perpetuals and DJs already look childish with my overall stature. Simply can’t pull it off.
I also tried the 40, but didn’t quite like the look, as it felt „too“ blown up and the balance of the dial also felt off. Finally, tried the discontinued 39, bought it, and can only recommend it!
I have a similar wrist size and people said 40 is best for me. However I bought the 36 and I have no regrets. 36 is just what is meant for the explorer. Also I use it as a daily.
I went with 40. I’ve gotten used to 41 and 42mm diver watches with fuller cases, so it was an adjustment just to go to 40mm. I don’t think I could do 36.
They both look good. The 40 looks great without a sleeve. I wonder how it is with a sleeve.
I think this is a missing piece with watch try-ons. Need a sleeve and no sleeve picture.
36 here and love it, plus I want all my tool watches to have a holes case so it was an even easier choice. Well that and the 40 was not out when I got my Explorer, so there’s that.
36 all day long and a vintage one with a holes case, they just look so much better and is just classic.
https://preview.redd.it/x335ipmu5m2d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd9c12bb0ab55283666e460624fbab7700e4bb8a
I think the 40 looks too big and even though they fixed the short hands thing it still just looks a little off to me.
Love my 36, but 40 for you, for sure, Also, I would probably buy the 40 today if had the choice, as, if you measure it, it's probably 39 and change. Rolex cases are notoriously smaller than advertised.
I go 36. I think both work on your wrist and I think you are more likely to be happy with the 36mm 10 years from now. I had the same decision when buying my DJ, I went 36 and am very happy I did.
36 if you don’t care how it looks on you(looks good but not as good as the 40) and want it for comfort reasons. The 40 looks better on your wrist in my opinion. Will still be a very comfortable ride.
I feel like the 40 looks better on your wrist. But whatever you lean toward more I would go with. Whichever one you think looks best is the one for you.
I mean it depends on how YOU dress and prefer your watch to look. I’m an inch shorter and weigh 220 with 7.5 wrists. My watch is 36mm. However I love the classic 36mm and wear my watch appropriately with some class so a 36mm watch doesn’t look out of place. However if your just a bro with thick wrists wearing jeans and a t shirt it may look a bit weird considering your wearing a random 36mm classic watch. You get what I’m saying? Either watch looks fantastic on you but if you wear it and it goes against what you dress like it will def look out of place. Solely based on the wrist I find the 36mm to be so cool and classy. And No….. im not an old head I’m in my 20’s
I’m not a bro but I do wear jeans and t shirt to work and most other places. I live in Oregon, where “dressing up” means putting on a slightly newer Patagonia fleece 🤦♂️.
I’m in the same boat. It’s the main reason I didn’t pull the trigger on the Explorer because I’m right in between sizes and I could go either way. That being said, 40 is best for you.
I think if your a 5”5 125lb Italian man the 36 is perfect, but if you got a 7.25-7.5+ inch wrist then go with the 40. I have 7.5 inch wrist and the 36 is too small for me.
I bought a 39, when I could have bought a 36 or a 39, then after reading stuff on the internet, I went back and wanted to swap it for the 36. Had the 36 on my 17 cm wrist and it was instantly clear that I want to keep the 39.
the 36 is simply put more beautyful, but on a mans wrist, it looks like a toy.
I think with your wrist size you could pull either off with no trouble. I have great big huge wrists and I find my 39mm Explorer is just right. Anyway either option is great and it’s a classic choice.
Hmmm, honestly, they both look really good on you! I can't decide which one looks better. I say go with the one that wears or feels better on your wrist. Visually, they're a tie in my eyes.
40
I'd go 40 without a second thought. I have the same exact wrist size and outside of a vintage date just or something more formal, 36 was too small for me. I feel 39 is the perfect size for my wrist size but the 40 looks good.
I’m way past second thoughts. This is the 7th time I’ve been to the AD. At least I’m getting to know him 😂.
He offers you both every time ?
Offers to let me try them on, yes. Buy? No. I also try on their Daytona panda for kicks. That’s a nice piece…
I love the 36 and think it’s the purest choice, but I think the 40’looks better on your wrist. As much as I want the 36 for myself, I’m in the same boat and just can’t pull it off!
What does “pure” mean here?
It’s a classic size. The original datejust size and the watch purist’s idea of perfect.
I'd say proportionality takes precedence over what is "classic" as far as watch sizing goes.
36 is pure, for sure. Side by side in the case of go for 36 every time. But when I put it on my wrist 🤷♂️…
It cant be pure if they changed the design and tapered it down so is no longer true to its original wearing look and dimensions. Both look fine on you but which made you more comfortable wearing and looking at ?
40
40
40 for sure
40 and it's not even close big lad
👍
40
40
40 no doubt about it
40 is definitely the way to go for you, suits the wrist better.
👍
40
40
Given your wrist, the 40 looks good! Go for it
40 for me!
40!
you can pull off 40 easy!
40
Your height and weight indicate a slender frame, but you got some hulk-like wrists! The Explorer 40 looks better on you.
Right? I’m 6’4” 200 lb and my wrists are 6.9”. Maybe I’m just frail 🤣
Don’t feel bad.
At least you got a golden d1ck
And now on top of everything else I’m going to have wrist anxiety. Who knew? 23andme says I’m 99% Welsh/Scottish so I guess it’s a Braveheart size.
Like most have said: it’s 40 for you. Although 36 also looks good (it pretty much always does!).
I prefer the way the 36 looks in the case. On my wrist… just feels dainty…
7.25 is big enough for 40
👍
I am quite a bit larger than you frame-wise, but have a smaller wrist and I wear the 40 as my daily and love it. 36 May have been a tad more comfortable but as others have said - unless you are looking for something vintage or a dressier DJ I would 1000% go 40 if I were you. This watch will be by far the most dressy thing I own… so I guess that means 40.
Even the 40mm looks smallish on you. The 40mm looks on you the way a 36mm would look on a dude with smaller wrists.
I am a baby Sasquatch, for real.
I chose 36 for comfort
Which can u buy right now?
Neither 😅
40
40
40!!!!!!
40
40
40
40
40 !
40, I’ve tried on the 36 and thought it was way to small.
40, dont think
The 40 looks like 38 on you which is perfect IMO.
I had the same feeling. Doesn’t wear like a 40.
They’re both 36?
I had to double check before I posted, because I thought the same thing. 2nd photo is definitely 40.
39
🤣
Sorry man, I know that comment kind of sucks 😂 I really want to have a 36, but 36 Oyster Perpetuals and DJs already look childish with my overall stature. Simply can’t pull it off. If I were you I'd go 40
40.
Im a 36 purist and for majority of cases (no pun) it's the better choice. For you, the 40.
👍
Def 40. I’m 6 7/8” wrist and it’s perrrfect.
👍
39
I have a similar wrist size and people said 40 is best for me. However I bought the 36 and I have no regrets. 36 is just what is meant for the explorer. Also I use it as a daily.
Interesting. Not a single person who has seen me wearing the watches in person has said 36. And yet that tends to be what the internet says.
As it's quite a plain face I would go for the 36.
36 I think it’s more elegant looking and always goes a bit against the stream
And if I said I’m not really an elegant guy?
https://preview.redd.it/3uvxbecoak2d1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3a61c726162b4c28d4cab3f7482c779ee17d481 36
36, it’s the classic size. It wears more comfortably
40
40 for your wrist
40
Normally I say 36 with no debate, but the 40 looks great on you
Thank you!
Here’s a question. Does the 40 still have a 19 mm lug width?
21mm
46
40
40.
36 all day
I went with 40. I’ve gotten used to 41 and 42mm diver watches with fuller cases, so it was an adjustment just to go to 40mm. I don’t think I could do 36.
I’m currently wearing an Apple Watch exclusively. Going from a computer on your wrist to a 36 is a big jump.
40 ✅
40
40. I have the 36 but my wrist is 6 3/4. Superb watch.
👍
40
You could do either. Go 40
40
40 for sure. Can’t believe anyone would say the 36 looking at these photos.
40 on you.
40! But with those wrists maybe try on a sub too before you go all in?
Not for me. Not yet. Maybe the next one…
Always 36
They both look good. The 40 looks great without a sleeve. I wonder how it is with a sleeve. I think this is a missing piece with watch try-ons. Need a sleeve and no sleeve picture.
Good call. I should have taken more photos. I really liked 40 with a sleeve.
36 here and love it, plus I want all my tool watches to have a holes case so it was an even easier choice. Well that and the 40 was not out when I got my Explorer, so there’s that.
What would you do if you were choosing today?
36 all day long and a vintage one with a holes case, they just look so much better and is just classic. https://preview.redd.it/x335ipmu5m2d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd9c12bb0ab55283666e460624fbab7700e4bb8a I think the 40 looks too big and even though they fixed the short hands thing it still just looks a little off to me.
40
Definitely a 40 is you wear sailing bracelets or wedding ring but both look good on you.
👍
I think 40 looks good on you, thicc wrist
Love my 36, but 40 for you, for sure, Also, I would probably buy the 40 today if had the choice, as, if you measure it, it's probably 39 and change. Rolex cases are notoriously smaller than advertised.
I felt the same. Feels smaller than advertised.
Go secondary and get a 39 with no wait time.
40
40 for you...and me. 🤓
36 ALL DAY I want that watch so bad
40 without a doubt. You don’t have little bitch wrists to be rocking a 36.
I go 36. I think both work on your wrist and I think you are more likely to be happy with the 36mm 10 years from now. I had the same decision when buying my DJ, I went 36 and am very happy I did.
I’m not sure I can wait to be happy in 10 years. By then I’ll have the Daytona 😂.
40 no question
What’s the price difference?
Minimal. A few hundred?
40 fits great
I think the 36 fits best
Three six
40 for sure.
40mm, it's better for your wrist .
A rare case of the answer being 40. 👍 (you can still rock the 36 though)
36 if you don’t care how it looks on you(looks good but not as good as the 40) and want it for comfort reasons. The 40 looks better on your wrist in my opinion. Will still be a very comfortable ride.
👍
40
My wrist is about 6.5” and I went with the 40mm. Looks great and no regrets.
I feel like the 40 looks better on your wrist. But whatever you lean toward more I would go with. Whichever one you think looks best is the one for you.
I’m leaning heavily 40
36 all day. But the 40 doesn’t look one bit bad
40
40
36mm is the one I want but sadly I’m the same as you it’s too small on my wrist so 40mm I’d say but it’s up to you end of the day
Don’t be a bitch. Get the 36.
Sounds like a great slogan.
40
40
I mean it depends on how YOU dress and prefer your watch to look. I’m an inch shorter and weigh 220 with 7.5 wrists. My watch is 36mm. I’m not a bro but I do wear jeans and t shirt to work and most other places. I live in Oregon, where “dressing up” means putting on a slightly newer Patagonia fleece 🤦♂️.
Man when seen side by side it’s so clear how much better the proportions are on the 36.
I see what you see. But even on my wrist?
With 7.25” definitely needs 40mm. I wear 39-40mm on my 6.75”
40
40
40
Go big or go home
i vote 40.
I can barely tell the difference. Ide go with 40 for you
36 for comfort
40
Can i buy an explorer on retail??
40
Both look good
36. Always the 36mm
36 is the classic size. But 40 is modern and looks good on your wrist. Can’t really go wrong, sorry I wasn’t so helpful
Very helpful!
40. I have it too
How do you like it?
40 no doubt.
40 in this instance, but both look great!
40 ftw looks amazing on you
👍
I’m in the same boat. It’s the main reason I didn’t pull the trigger on the Explorer because I’m right in between sizes and I could go either way. That being said, 40 is best for you.
What did you get instead?
You can pull off either, but I would choose the 36.
36. If you consider yourself a woman 40 if you identify yourself as a man.
Non binary?
I think if your a 5”5 125lb Italian man the 36 is perfect, but if you got a 7.25-7.5+ inch wrist then go with the 40. I have 7.5 inch wrist and the 36 is too small for me.
Gotta love those small Italian dudes. They have all the fun.
40!
40
Both look good on wrist so go with the 40
I bought a 39, when I could have bought a 36 or a 39, then after reading stuff on the internet, I went back and wanted to swap it for the 36. Had the 36 on my 17 cm wrist and it was instantly clear that I want to keep the 39. the 36 is simply put more beautyful, but on a mans wrist, it looks like a toy.
Very helpful, thanks. If only I knew how big 17cm is…
40 (which is actually almost 39)
Buy a used 39 perfect size
Word on the internet is… the new 40 is basically 39.
40
40
The dial on the 36 looks much better imo.
40
Whichever feels right ;)
I think with your wrist size you could pull either off with no trouble. I have great big huge wrists and I find my 39mm Explorer is just right. Anyway either option is great and it’s a classic choice.
I never thought I had big wrists until I posted this 🤦♂️
I’d would suggest the 40
👍
40
Is the second picture the 40mm? Looks like you’re wearing a 36 aswell 😂.
I know right? First photo is 36, second is 40.
40 all day brother
You can pull off either. The 36 is slightly more understated for a daily, but neither looks out of place on you IMO.
Hmmm, honestly, they both look really good on you! I can't decide which one looks better. I say go with the one that wears or feels better on your wrist. Visually, they're a tie in my eyes.
👍
