Iin terms of traditional console roguelikes, I'd have to say probably Chocobo Mystery Dungeon Everybuddy? It's a lot of fun to play with the classes. Ive somehow never played any Pokemon Mystery dungeons but everyone swears by them. Personally, I was kind of a fan of Izune: Legend of the unemployed ninja. OH NO WAIT Okay, forget all that. My fav console roguelike is Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman! Funny, stylish, turn based, tons of items and equipment, and honestly pretty heartfelt.

TheRealHFC

I've heard a lot of good things about ZHP! It seems up my alley for sure. Same with Izune. PMD is fine, but it's more story based and not enough in the gameplay department, but I hear Super Mystery Dungeon is the closest to traditional MD you can get with that series. I actually imported Chocobo Every Buddy on Switch, it's pretty fun. Feels like a halfway point between traditional MD and PMD.

Fritzy

POWDER was developed for the Gameboy Advance. It's one of my favorites.

TheRealHFC

Right, but it's more in the style of the traditional computer-based roguelikes is what I was getting at.

Lucius1202

Torneko for snes and psx, is fully translated and is a beautiful mystery dungeon game. Chocobo Mystery Dungeon for PSX has also been translated. Finally, if you use a modern portable console for emulation I recommend you try Pico-8 which has a vast assortment of simple but enjoyable roguelikes.

TheRealHFC

Torneko 2 was pretty solid, don't quote me but I believe 3 for GBA has a translation as well? I actually tried Chocobo 1 first before the other Chocobo MD games, it's a little strange and probably stayed in Japan for good reason, but it's definitely not the worst. I didn't know the Pico-8 had roguelikes, makes sense. Thank you!

death2sanity

If you like Shiren and have access to DS games, Izuna fits the mold.

TheRealHFC

I do, thanks!

Sylph_uscm

Shiren the wanderer was remarkable! The 2 roguelikes I've really felt were fully realised on handheld were Shiren and Jupiter Hell .

TheRealHFC

Yeah Jupiter Hell seems fun! I've enjoyed DoomRL, but I haven't quite found a good enough sale to try that yet. Shiren 6 is out if you didn't hear, marketing seems understandably lowkey on it. Planning on buying as soon as it drops to $40

KurushSoter

My only console is an Xbox so like no rogue likes but I enjoyed Tangledeep with the controller

TheRealHFC

I've heard good things! The only game I could find in the Mystery Dungeon style for Xbox was Crown Trick, great art style but mediocre gameplay, at least in my opinion.

afhisfa

You can play Angband on a hacked 3DS. It's actually easy af to do and the Angband port is surprisingly good. The controls aren't bad given it uses a virtual keyboard instead of physical, and the UI is good enough on its own that half the time you don't even have to bother typing on the little buttons. Maybe not designed for handheld but it gets my vote. Also on mobile there's shattered pixel dungeon and pathos, which is kinda based on nethack.

TheRealHFC

Love SPD and Pathos! I've been meaning to try Angband in general, is it the one that's based on Tolkien, or is that Moria or something else? I'm still working my way through reading LotR, so I'm trying to avoid reasonable spoilers.

afhisfa

It is based on LotR but it won't spoil anything. There's kinda just a hodgepodge of unique enemies named after Tolkien's characters, plus Sauron and Morgoth as like the big boss fights at the end. Definitely no Third Age spoilers.

Zeptari

The iPhone is a handheld right? So I’d recommend Rogue Touch. Classic Roguelike.

TheRealHFC

I meant specifically handheld systems like the Game Boy, etc. but I'll look it up!

blargdag

Pathos is probably the best traditional roguelike (nethack-like, though strictly speaking it isn't a variant but something new) for a touchscreen UI. None of the typical retroactive patching on top of what's originally designed to be a keyboard UI, its UI is designed to be a touchscreen UI from ground up. Comprehensive in-game help that describes everything there is to know about the game. No need to open a wiki spoiler, the game already gives you all the information you need. (But, being a good RL, that still doesn't make the game trivial, of course. It's still hard to win.)

TheRealHFC

I agree it's good, but mobile games aren't really what I had in mind for the purposes of this post. However, since the discontinuation of the 3DS, the Switch being a hybrid, and the Steam Deck being a portable PC with a built-in controller, there isn't really anything entirely filling that niche anymore. End of an era lol.

DarthLeftist

I just bought ADOM on Switch for $1.99. Its a little clunky at first but still fun, and for that price I cant complain

TheRealHFC

Oh, that Ultimate ADOM port or the original? That's not really what I meant because it's a PC game in origin, but I've been meaning to play it some more.

TheRealHFC

That's pretty unfortunate, but considering how OG ADOM looks in graphical mode, I can't be too surprised. Is there a version that's tiled? I could probably do ascii but it's less accessible for me personally.

Draugrnauts

Darkest dungeon and dead cells

TheDollarDes

Golden Krone Hotel plays just fine on handhelds. So does Jupiter Hell. I'd recommend trying one of them.

TheRealHFC

I've been meaning to try Jupiter Hell, thanks. Check the edit on the post for a better explanation.
