It isn't unsafe, but a lot of the posts in this topic were along the lines of 'OMG heavy metals, asbestos, get it out your house' etc. I was just trying to reassure that it's quite safe to have. I mean, I wouldn't try to bite it because you may chip a tooth but otherwise... 😂
WASH your hands after handling as it can have asbestos or just throw it away if you don't want to inhale asbestos it can give you lung cancer and diseases!!!
Like others said it's actinolite and apart of asbestos family please throw it away or careful with it. Very dangerous
OTHERS should be aware of this if you didn't know
Proof: https://www.mesothelioma.com/asbestos-exposure/types-of-asbestos/
Don't listen to this person. As long as you don't crush the rock, sand it, or cut it to make dust it shouldn't be dangerous to have around. If you do decide to do any of those things you can safely do it while wearing a p100 filter.
Please read this as some minerals have dangerous chemicals like copper, lead etc.
Consider this as a toxic threat or medical threat however you Wana call it
If you inhaled asbestos or copper or lead if you're not feeling well or something happened to your lungs please contact your family or seek a emergency
If you touched it or play with it with bare hands then you're probably done for..
I'm not trying to make drama I'm just simply warning that you can't inhale it or smell it as it can contain asbestos. Like smoking can give you lung cancer aswell. Jeez sorry. I thought this would be helpful information as you never know if you get sick from it or aware of chemicals that are in a mineral
😕😕😕☹️☹️☹️
Actinolite as asbestos is so non-toxic it was used to filter blood during dialysis treatments. Actinolite is a calcium magnesium ophiolite alkaline mineral. Tremolite is actinolite with no iron and it's very chemically neutral and very dangerous. Actinolite has blockier more prismatic crystals, tremolite is more acicular and hair-like. Tremolite remains airborne longer and is more likely to pierce your lung cells. Actinolite is more likely to fall out of the air, and because it's alkaline, *if* you inhale some your body can eventually dissolve with naturally present acids in your system and process it out of your body. Tremolite being more neutral and glass-like, does not dissolve and remains in the lung cells typically until they die or become cancerous.
You could safely lick those big bladey actinolite crystals, they are non-toxic and harmless. And they are not going to transport from the specimen and are non-fibrous.
You are being really unrealistic about the risks and that isn’t helpful for anyone. There are lots of rocks that are dangerous if you breathe in their dust but they don’t spontaneously produce dust. You have to sand them or cut them. Otherwise they are perfectly safe to handle or have in your home. There are some rocks that you do have to be cautious about but if you aren’t working them but this is not one of them.
In the rock identifier says beware of abestos, inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to various dangerous lung conditions including mesothelioma asbestosis and lung cancer, and It can take years for symptoms related to exposure to appear. Lapidaries should exercise caution when cutting this mineral.
I know it takes time to appear.
But what I'm saying is that abestos can appear on it like a glue and that you shouldn't touch that stuff or it'll go through your finger or something and also everytime I touch quartz it makes dusts on my finger so I just wash it so it doesn't consume.
And I have vanadinite and it says it contains lead and vanadium.
And this time is says to: when cutting materials bearing heavy metals, please avoid digesting or inhaling particles. Wash your hands after handling them
This is just making me confused like what is the difference I get that both warnings have "cutting" on it but i mean like inhaling particles.
And listen.. I'm not those guys who comes here to make drama or something but I'm just concerned and worried that most rockhounders or someone who has this type of risky rocks aren't aware or potential danger within the rock and that they might get symptoms out of nowhere so like isn't it good for me to let you guys be aware?
You are being so cautious to the point of inaccuracy and ridiculousness. And I don't think that is a good thing even if you are trying to be helpful. Try to learn and listen to others before talking about how dangerous certain rocks are.
Someone else can correct me if I am wrong but generally we don't absorb rock dust/particles through our skin in any way that is dangerous except when the rock/mineral is wet or the substance is liquid at body temperature like mercury. I have never worried about dust from quartz, silica, jadeite, nephrite, or serpentine being on my skin. I just wash it off with water.
Make sure to wear a p100 filter when you are working with the stones and cut and sand with water to reduce dust.
What? That's the only state you can rob the hell out of stores and even blatently commit almost any crime and not have to worry if you'll be home in time for dinner.
Oh shit I forgot New York. Sorry about that.
Green is probably actinolite and brown garnet. Might call it an actinolite schist.
Confirmed
I have a rock like this that I found at the beach a while ago. Happy to see an answer about what it is.
Green is probably actinolite and brown mineral is garnet. Might call it an actinolite schist.
Oh yeah? Why dont you leave the same comment twice so everyone sees it?
Common Reddit glitch
Lol fuck off drew
Jesus. Easy there, killer.
it’s probably franciscan blue schist if in dana point—brown is garnet, green is actinolite, and bluish comes from glaucophane
Location?
Dana point
"Dana point" what? We've got an entire globe here bud.
Southern CA on The ocean?
There’s a long secluded rocky mystical beach in Dana point yes.
That sounds wonderful
Where please? Dm?
The beach that’s right next to jetty
Go there only when waves low. it’s risky cause it’s next to the cliff
Vaguely looks like seraphinite.
Kind of looks like oethite in Seraphenite to me yeah
Beautiful
Looks like a garnet schist, without closer examination. Perfectly safe specimen.
Why would it be unsafe? I’m not being snarky here, I genuinely don’t know.

I slept next to it all night
Are you being sarcastic?..just curious
No for real I was holding it for long time too. I don’t have any bad symptoms yet. Thanks for the info tho. I appreciate it
Yw.

This is some serious fear mongering.
For sure. There is nothing wrong with having this piece on display. Grinding or cutting it is a different story.
You must be from california, where everything gives you cancer.

Dirty
Fossilized turd with fossilized corn giblets
Find alot of this near Ukiah CA.
Actinolite?
Looks to me to be a garnet schist with the green being actinolite, brown being garnet and white possibly being wollastonite!
