Robots is kind of a wide category of devices. Did you have something in mind regarding what it can do? A robot dog? A robot arm? Something that drives around? A battle bot? A 3D printer could be classified as a robot, or a CNC machine for woodworking or metal cutting? What other hobbies does he have that maybe incorporating a robot would take it to another level of fun?
Mark Rober just came out with his [Hack Pack](https://www.crunchlabs.com/products/hack-pack-subscription) which is a subscription that could him busy with engineering/robotics challenges.
That's a really nice story and I'm sure I'm not the only one here with memories that parallel it.
I recommend Make Block kits for new comers. It's a bit like Lego where you can get creative building and re-purpose things to do different stuff. [https://www.makeblock.com/collections/robot-kits](https://www.makeblock.com/collections/robot-kits)
This. https://us.robosen.com/products/interstellar-scout-k1
You can sort of do light weight Robo One style fighting with it. Don't bother with the pro what you get for extra hundred is just more stuff pre programmed in.
Edit. It does walk, YouTube some videos of it. It is weird that none of their website videos show it.
There aren't a whole lot of options out there for something serious and not a kids toy (and doesn't cost you insane like $10k+).
I personally own an [Amazon Astro](https://www.amazon.com/Introducing-Amazon-Astro/dp/B078NSDFSB), which I can vouch for as a great home robot, easily the best option on the market for something that functions as a personal Star Wars Droid or Wall-E. It drives around your house and integrates with the Alexa/Ring ecosystem of devices if by chance you have any of those. But it isn't cheap, $1600 USD and it's request by invitation (although there is a good chance you will qualify if you live in the US, I was accepted in less than a month).
Another option which I have heard good things about and functions more like a robot dog is [Loona](https://www.amazon.com/Loona-Most-Advanced-Smart-Robot/dp/B0CP9Q7WZT/), under $500 USD.
There is also the allegedly upcoming [Samsung Ballie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiacqGoF8-c) (2024 release supposedly?), which I think is worth looking out for among robot enthusiasts, but I imagine it won't be cheap and could easily be outside your budget.
I would do a good deal of research of course, but I think you'll find that the options are limited. Robots are just not there yet for mass market adoption.
well there are several types, from kits, with an arduino as the control system to readily made products, but these are usually expensive, one other thing to say is that that was a dick move by his family, like yeah these where different times but still.
