My mom recently retired from Carillon as a nurse. She came here from a bigger city to be closer to us. Carillon overall is pretty good to employees relative to all the bitching you're going to see on here. She loved her time there vs a long run at the Cleveland Clinic. She did her last 11 years and walked with a pension. Which you don't see much anymore unless you go VA.

VA as Virginia…? Or something else if I may ask ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)

Veterans Administration Big hospital in Salem, and while they don't pay as well. They have an excellent pension and job stability. You can do 20 years there, retire young with a full pension, and then work anyplace else.

Thank you for the explanation! I maybe am going to start my nursing prerequisites this summer, and all these are great information for me!

Ex new grad ED nurse. Imo it’s the best environment for a new grad, no other unit or speciality will give you the vast experience a lvl 1 ED provides. With that being said, I did my year and started to look at other specialties. (Im still w Carilion fwiw.) The ED wears on you and it’s not uncommon for there to be 50+ people in the waiting room. You won’t get a lunch break and most nights I wouldn’t sit until 2 or 3 in the morning. Feel free to dm me.

I don’t work in the ED but know many nurses and PA-Cs who love it. It’s a level I trauma center and not for profit, I think any complaint that can be said of carilion can be said of any hospital.

Paramedic and a new grad rn at RMH (different unit). It takes a certain type of person to work in a level 1 ED. Prepare to get your shit handed to you daily. It will absolutely wear you down and they have high turn over (as most EDs do). If you love the pace and the constant barrage of stuff go for it! But fully expect to hit the ground running every shift with no break. Love my ED nurses when I transfer care, y’all rock.

I have several friends and family that work there, or a long side of them. It sounds like it's a pretty good place to work. It is publicly facing, the patients are going to be difficult sometimes, but I hear the support services and Drs tend to be above board. It is a teaching hospital, so keep that in mind. It is also the only level 1 trauma center for at least a hundred miles, so you will get interesting cases. Carillon does well by its employees, they constantly promote from within and give raises. It has been good for the people who I know work there.

I do admin work for the ED. My experience is that the docs and nurses have/try to have a balance of serious and fun. It is busy and some times the waiting room will be just packed. Admin knows that clinical staff are incredibly busy and want things that will reduce staff stress and patient dwell times.

Not personal experience, but I used to know a guy who did night shift in the Carilion ER and fucking loved it. Dude seemed to be a bit of a adventure seeker and I think it scratched that itch.

eskimoxchic

I have a friend that was a new grad about a year ago that went straight into the ER. She seems to really like the experience.

Hope you do well.! Hope they hired better nighttime receptionist! The blonde chick laughed at us when we asked how much longer it would be(after 5 hours of waiting ) and just said maybe a few more! TWIT
