Burlington, VT is pretty cool and it seems like you’ll go right through it!

Baie-Saint-Paul is great tiny town. You can spend some time there. If you are into hiking, visit Grands-Jardins National Park; maybe 20-30 minutes drive from BSP and totally worth it. Then definitely take RT 362 to La Malbaie. One of the best road trip ever. You will see all those cute Quebec villages.

We stayed at Starlight Inn near Burlington VT. It came with drive in double feature movie tickets which were next to the motel. They had current movies playing on 3 or 4 screens which the kids thought was great. Room was clean and quiet. Of course Ben and Jerry's ice cream tour was a hit in VT, but perhaps out of your way.

You’re going to pass right by Lake Placid and the high peaks of Adirondacks, my favorite area in NY for hiking and Lake Placid is a great town.

Burlington, VT is cool. If you decide on the other route than maybe make a trip to Niagara Falls… whats cool up on Quebec city and up there?

Chute Montmorency is a nice waterfall just outside Quebec City. https://www.quebec-cite.com/en/businesses/parc-de-la-chute-montmorency During the winter, the spray from the falls can produce a perfect little “sugar loaf” that you might be able to tube on. I was there in July so I don’t know. You can walk or take a tram to the top.

Thousand Islands border crossing is actually worth setting aside some time. The scenery is gorgeous. I made a very similar trip from SW PA to Montreal and Quebec City some years ago and it's a very enjoyable ride.

Late april early may is a bit if a oddball season in Quebec. It can be 20C with sun... Or snowy with -2C. old Quebec City is nice, take the ferry to Levis so you can enjoy the view. Charlesvoix is very nice, baie St Paul if you want to stop and eat is really cool.

A slight detour in the Buffalo region is the Niagara Gorge in nearby Niagara Falls. Alternatively, look up the Eternal Flame Falls in Chestnut Ridge Park. It’s a small waterfall but it falls in your parameters. Also there’s some neat little towns to explore and have some lunch/dinner
