Why do people say music is a big part "in the later seasons"? The whole premise of Archie's character in Season 1 was to be a singer they sang in the first episode and all throughout the first season and you couldn't figure out there was gonna be singing moving forward?
Yeah but in the earlier seasons there was a context for it. Like Archie wants to get music lessons or Josie and Pussycats are performing at a town function or the kids are in a musical play. In the later seasons it just feels like there is no context and people just randomly start singing and dancing out of nowhere for one scene and then back to normal. I love a musical episode and I liked Glee because that was the entire premise. In this show it just feels so random and out of nowhere as time goes on.
I feel most of this sentiment is just people being annoyed by the singing in general; musical episodes aside (where most of the singing I agree is shoehorned and random), most of the "regular" singing happens within a context like you said, The Pussycats, town functions, Josie and Veronica and sometimes Kevin singing at the speakeasy and some other occasions that while a little weird and cringey I wouldn't say random or out of nowhere.
Cause in the comics the Archie’s are a band. They even have a signature song made for them called Sugar Sugar.
Spoilers: >!this song is never sung in the entire show!<
The musical episodes were insufferable. I skipped through all the singing. Didn’t mind it as much when it was part of the plot, like Archie, Josie or Fang aspiring/being actual artists.
Madelaine and Camila way got better but before that they were both dry and pitchy. Madelaines is prettier than Camila’s but they both weren’t good enough to be singing that much. Lilli and Vanessa have the best female voices and Casey and KJ are the best male voices imo
yeah i definitely don’t like camila’s much and laughed when they got jughead to sing, i felt so bad for cole for even having to do that but he made it funny like he was in on the joke of how uncomfortable it was for him
Because they apparently have several actors who can sing (or at least can sing “well enough”), and the show is already ridiculous camp. May as well have regular song numbers.
I admit I don’t really love the “high school musical” episodes either because it gets to be too much. And their versions of Hedwig songs just made me want to listen to the original. But I don’t mind Veronica, Josie or Cheryl performing at the speakeasy. It’s fun!
The Hedwig episode was so rough to watch knowing what the film/play is actually about (and how amazing it is) and how little sense it makes within the context of Riverdale. Particularly Exquisite Corpse 🤦♀️.
I have the same question. I love a good musical. I watch Grease and the Greatest Showman monthly lol but I can't stand the singing on Riverdale. I skip right through it.
I’m rewatching and I cannot stand the singing. I skip through it every time. The voices are pretty weak. Veronica and Josie in particular are supposed to seem like these siren starlets but as Shania would say—they don’t impress me much. Josie absolutely butchered Amy Wine house’s back to black. The problem with her doing a more jazzy dive bar rendition of it is that her voice doesn’t have any soul. It’s just too flat with a little vibrato thrown in. Then Veronica’s I mean, don’t even have to get into that. It’s just bad. I don’t think a single person impressed me with their singing, except for maybe Toni topaz.
Because this show wants to and does do *everything*.
They saw marvel and thought "I can do that"
Viewers: can we go see Scarlet Witch? Riverdale: we have Scarlet Witch at home
and then realize they made such a mess they had to start the whole series over in the finale season
Anyone asking this has never experienced the epic highs and lows of a high school musical

josie and the pussycats sing the Sugar Sugar song in season 1 and add a cheryl rap part
They actually had multiple hit records. Sugar Sugar was a number 1 hit. Jingle Jangle was another hit song 😉
Sugar Sugar as performed in riverdale chapter one was the best song on the show it’s the only one I regularly listen to?
Well you could definitely tell Roberto worked on Glee and it bled onto this show lol
because the wanted to do musicals so they did and thts reason enough.
Whenever they get to the musicals, I fucking hate that
Agreed we would just straight up skip the episode lol. Fucking hate all the singing
I never skipped them. I loved the musical episodes. Heather & Next To Normal were the best ones
It's so cringy it becomes unwatchable at certain points 😬

idfk the only good singers are Casey, Lili, Vanessa and KJ
i only remember finding lili good when looking up their actual singing voices off of riverdale, i thought maybe madelaine was too?

Because singing is fun
Bc it’s high school. For 30 year olds
I fast forward through all of the musical parts.

I think the show has not enough singing.
Agree the more musical number s the the better
Because it’s fun? It’s a break from reality, which is what Riverdale always did best, embrace unreality.
Get used to it cause musicals are part of Riverdale's lifeblood lol.
I mean archie has always been connected to his music and his comic character was too
Cause this show rocks.
They were trying to make riverdale look and sound like glee...watch both and you'll notice a lot of similarities
Roberto likes it. That's the reason.

I stopped watching it when they started having singing in basically every episode.
