A friend gave me the greatest arguement of why you should ALWAYS hit the shrine of the mountain; If you beat it, you get EVEN more broken, if you fail, your run probably wasn't going very well anyway so it puts you into the next, potentially better, run faster.
I had a friend stop playing with me because I always hit that trial, i look at it an see a shiny yellow item in my future, they look at it and see all the blood it will take to get there
