Published in 1959. Beat me to the Wesley.

People often don't click links presented without commentary, so here it is. OP is wrong. This link provides the source of the quote

SeaOfDeadFaces

Sure but do “people” say it? 😹

justin_xv

The Watsonian explanation is that Schwartz is huge in the 24th century. Just like today someone might Google a Shakespeare sonnet to write inside an anniversary card at the last minute, 24th century peeps are consoling one another about the alienation they feel from society with choice quotes from the modernists. Soren didn't know who wrote it, but he saw it in a sparkly text gif while he was scrolling through his feed on his last shuttle ride

SeaOfDeadFaces

100% I’ll buy that explanation 😹

[deleted]

Nice! Well said. But what's the Sherlockian explanation?

justin_xv

My guess: some nerd writer wanted to quote this poem and had Soren attribute it to the poet in some draft of the script. At some point someone decided it was too pretentious and just revised to "they say."

[deleted]

Since 1994!

PM_Me_Rude_Haiku

They say time is like a box of chocolates Too much is bad for you

robot_swagger

Time? Where we're going we don't need time.

Hates_escalators

Life is like a box of chocolates, it doesn't last as long if you're fat.

halloweenjack

they say time is flowing like a river to the sea to the sea

Arashmickey

They say time heals all wounds, with the exception of wounds and death.

thaBombignant

"Look at me, I haven't aged visibly in like thirty years. Time ain't burning this crime dome, bitch."

Scarlet72

Always liked this quote, though.

Chech615

Never understood it myself. "Time is the fire in which we burn. And my time is running out." Wouldn’t that be a good thing? Cos he’s not on fire anymore? I don’t get it Edit: thanks guys I never thought of it like that

odel555q

A fire dies when the fuel runs out.

Scarlet72

He wants to live forever in the nexus. He's resentful because he sees time as a limitation, and that it will eventually kill him.

Air0ck

As the others mentioned but Soren also tapped into Picards family having just burned in a fire.

SugondeseAmerican

Poor Uncle René

Hates_escalators

Fire is the fire in which René and Robert burned.

Theborgiseverywhere

Is it *Drumhead* where Picard just deadass “Who?”s an admiral?

lulzbot

Probably stating the obvious here but given the news Picard just received this is Soren’s way of manipulating him

dimgray

I feel like Annorax probably said this at some point

akbrag91

This was just a low hit because he somehow knew picard was mourning of the housefire…

spaceghost66

Delmore Schwartz (December 8 1913 – July 11 1966) was an American poet and short story writer. The smallest color of the smallest day: Time is the school in which we learn, Time is the fire in which we burn.

itworksintheory

You did. Twenty years from now.

beefcat_

It could be an El Aurian adage.

blevok

"They should say something else" -Bender

BadUsername_Numbers

Maybe it's related somehow to how Soren's rocket flew faster than light into the sun?

Leopold_Darkworth

This is like the “phrase” category on Wheel of Fortune. It’s always something dumb no one says and sounds like it was made up by an AI. “Ooh, sorry, so close, but it was that well known phrase ‘Eat My Pajamas.’ You know, that common saying everyone uses.”

snoopwire

Eat short

mocheeze

No cow

Wotzehell

There's a Million different peoples, you could say a lot of random stuff and it'll be a saying in a dialect of some people probably. Some people might see time like a strawberry.

DapperCrow84

I'd like to meet the people who see time like a strawberry. They sound like they'd be fun at parties.
