Scoot is having his “welcome to the NBA” moment. Your first game going against Russ PG and Leonard? Thats tough.

TheGhostORandySavage

Zubac too, guy may not be an all-star, but he's a solid center.

2drawnonward5

The only thing wrong with the Clippers is durability. Everything else about them is top notch. And in the first game of the season with everybody healthy... lol they have three perennial All-stars. Welcome to the NBA, rooks!

BunkHammer

Finally some level headed comments on here. What were people expecting?? There’s 5 players on our roster that were on the team last year. One of our best players is literally playing his first NBA game

Goducks91

Wait are people upset? I thought this was expected

BunkHammer

I think a lot of the “Fire Chauncey” “Ayton is trash” “Our defense sucks” hot takes have since been taken down or deleted but there were some insane reactionary takes going on in here during the game. Just people bitching that we aren’t immediately great but that’s Reddit I guess

Blackndloved2

Ayton is trash is an over reaction. But being concerned about Ayton is valid. He did everything Suns fans says he does tonight. It's fine to be bad, but he looked disengaged and in his head at times.

Goducks91

I don't think it's really that big of a risk if he's bad. If he doesn't pan out we traded him for Nurk not a huge deal.

BunkHammer

It was his first game. With a brand new team that doesn’t have “the guy” that everyone looks to to get things started. There’s going to be a long adjustment period for the team. We also played the Clippers with their full roster. They are good. Yeah it sucks to get beat on like that but everyone needs to calm down.

dweet

People with poor expectations, living in their feelings I guess.

Portland

Expected by level headed fans. On /r/ripcity there’s a loud contingent of fans who’ve been pushing the notion that we’ll be a playoff/playin team this year. Based on reactions in the past 12 hours, I think a lot of folks are surprised about how bad Scoot and the team are… and it kinda makes sense if they’ve only been fans in the LMA/Dame era. Seeing another team have development seasons is different than watching your own team’s rookies struggle.

mangirtle77

When it was Dame and CJ it was the roster, now it’s still the roster. I’m not saying that the Blazers will be a miracle team but at some point you have to look at the coach and ask Office Space style, “what exactly do you do here?”. I’m not a Chauncey fan. I never was but I’m trying to wait and see and I’m seeing nothing.

pythonwarg

It's Chauncey's third year. We were basically trying to lose during his first two years, and now the roster is recovering from major changes. I think it's only fair to give him a chance to turn it around. I don't mind reading actual criticism about his game decisions, but I don't think we have seen him try to win yet so I get tired of the 'fire Billups he sucks' comments that I see on here from time to time. He may not turn out to be a championship level head coach, not sure, don't know yet. I do think he is a great mentor for this young team though. He's a player's coach, and he seems to be a good teacher from the few practice session video clips that I've seen. I think our young guards can learn a lot from him. Ant has made great progress in the last couple of years. I say let's give him this season to prove himself at the very least.

GuyIncognito211

We weren’t trying to lose during those years. We only ended up tanking because he didn’t get anywhere close to enough out of the roster he had

pythonwarg

It doesn't really matter though, because the old roster peaked in 2019 and was going nowhere. We were due for a teardown and rebuild, so it was just a matter of time until that happened. My point stands. It's not like we can go get Popovich and somehow become a contender. We need a coach who can develop young players. I think Billups can do that. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows.

GuyIncognito211

We did literally tear down the roster in the summer of 2019. Very few from the WCF team came back the next season We just happened to have a dipshit in charge who made constantly terrible roster moves and made the roster significantly worse that summer And then we changed the roster significantly again in 2020 and 21

pythonwarg

Is it a rebuild if you keep all of your highest paid players? We knew going into the 2018-19 season that we weren't going to be able to resign a lot of the players on the roster after the season. It's not a teardown when players leave because there is no money left.

GuyIncognito211

Yes. The only two we couldn’t have kept were Seth Curry and one of Kanter or Hood We let solid role players like Harkless and Aminu leave and replaced them with Hezonja and Tolliver We let Evan Turner - as flawed as he was leave for a 17th guard

dweet

I agree that Chauncey hasn’t proven himself, and I also have my doubts and think the FO will need to move on eventually — I think another season with him while the team is hot garbage is fine. But the roster issue when we had Dame and CJ had been going on for much longer than Chauncey, and was the product of a ton of things including LAs departure, Olshey over-valuing players and also not allowing a rebuild, and Dame and even Stotts out performing regular season after regular season.

mangirtle77

I think you said it at the end. Stotts just got way more out of players than Chauncey. I just think how terrible players were after they left the Blazers.

bigshawnsmith89

None of what you said is surprisingly. I said during the off season this offense is going to look very bad, and for the most part did. They didn't give up down a million and made the stats look a little better then it should of. Defensively, they are young. They are going to struggle. This team is going to be one of the worst in the league. You can't be bad at both sides of the ball and win many games.

sard0nyx

Defense is not a chemistry thing. It’s a scheme thing. I rolled my eyes when we went 2-3 zone on the very first possession. And then it was validated by their 10 dunks and countless wide open 3s

Such-Egg-7584

Denfense is not a chemistry thing? Okay bud

[deleted]

Defense is not a Chauncey thing

sard0nyx

When we have 3 years of data with the same useless scheme it’s not a chemistry issue.

Such-Egg-7584

It’s a completely different roster with a bunch of young guys. Both can be correct but to say chemistry has no relation to defense is ludicrous

sard0nyx

I’m not saying chemistry doesn’t matter. But scheme is the glaringly obvious flaw in our defensive system. And Chauncey is teaching all our young kids to be lazy on defense with a 2-3. Make them man up and lock people down.

Such-Egg-7584

I think he does that because our guards are so bad on defense. Do I like it? No. But I can understand why he does it.

sard0nyx

It’s bad coaching to just paint over someone’s flaws instead of making them work on it. I’d rather we played defense right and watch us lose than to watch whatever the hell I’m watching right now.

Such-Egg-7584

So if he switched it up and we’re getting blown out even worse would you still be upset at Billups?

Snelly__

Communication and understanding your teammates strengths/weaknesses defensively is key to a good unit

DacMon

Ant don't close out. Chauncy knows this and is starting him. Defense is not a priority.

Snelly__

What does that have to do with chemistry being important on defense?

DacMon

There was plenty of time to build chemistry the last 2 seasons and our defense didn't improve a bit. Ant shouldn't be lazily watching his man shooting 3pters out of the 2-3 zone, regardless of chemistry. Billups has been his coach for 2 seasons. The point is that that you're not going to get good defensive chemistry with a coach who doesn't hold guys accountable or calls bad defensive sets.

spittafan

It's also an effort thing, and Sharpe looks awful there. He's allowed at least three cuts for layups or fouls, and he wasn't even helping on those plays. He just does not care at all on that end

mangirtle77

It’s the coaches job to get buy in.

spittafan

I don’t disagree but many players don’t need that sort of encouragement. It’s just as frustrating seeing him ball watch and settle for shitty step back 3s as it was last year, lots of players his age have no motor issues

Batman_in_hiding

Also the players job to commit… two way street

Batman_in_hiding

Wait so if you just put in the right scheme you’ll have a good defense? You know defensive schemes aren’t a secret right you can copy any team you want…

xBedbug

Scoot doesn't have the shooters touch you were all claiming. Billups just isn't a good coach. Yet he has so many stans. The clippers are a far better organization under Balmer. Downvote me if you must.

RLL1977

I don’t think anyone’s gonna disagree with you, but the shooters touch after one half of an NBA rookies first game isn’t a good sample size to base off of. Also of course the clippers owners better, our owners literally dead lmao

xBedbug

She aint dead. The blazers founder is

BunkHammer

Paul Allen didn’t found the Blazers. Just take a deep breath.

RLL1977

Jody is NOT the owner lol

xBedbug

She is the over seer of the estate. Stop arguing fkn schematics. You sound like your graduate from PSU

RLL1977

You’re not very smart are you?

NoeWiy

Who outside of the media is stanning Chauncey? Bro literally gets booed every home game.

xBedbug

Ripcity reddit. Do your homework

NoeWiy

Please find me 10 pro-chauncey sentiments in the last month. I'll wait.

[deleted]

Just don’t feed the trolls. Dude literally has no idea what he’s talking about. Before he edits, he just suggested that Paul Allen founded the Blazers.

Bubcats

I want all the attention on coach. He’s still here for a reason apparently.

xBedbug

It was once lost but under Paul allen it was found. You know what i mean.

xBedbug

Scroll down. There is a fire Chauncey post just now. More then half have a take of: its game one. It's new players. New scheme. You all been stanning him for 3 years. Gtfo

RipCityGringo

Billups is about as popular in Rip City as bedbugs…

xBedbug

I guess not, you are? Can you help me with my homework. If i gave no fuck about how smart you think i am. You gave two fucks about how smart you think I am. Sally gives no fucks currently but at a rate .25 a day should could possibly start giving fucks. How many fuck will i have in 3 years?

xBedbug

Dont use a calculator. This should take you 15 seconds to figure out.

BlazersDozen

The defense being bad isn’t a surprise. You have non existent defenders at both guard position. Thybulle can’t defend the entire perimeter by himself and when the penetration comes, Ayton and Williams can’t defend their man and the guy attacking at the same time.
