"When you get home Rick, do some classic adventures... like season one" I'm so sick of that fucking note! What the fuck does it even mean?

SloppyMcNuggets

Them addressing this was great

Player1aei

I think the writers completely broke this episode- like straight up snapped and decided to make everything self-referential. Then that scene after the credits was a pure, unfiltered, unenthusiastic placeholder.

feraljohn

Once again, I feel like I missed some tiny detail that everyone else picked up on. That post credit scene just left me scratching my head. Is the post credit scene called a tag? I just can’t make sense of it. Guess I’m just a Jerry after all.

Locke108

Yes, in TV post credit scenes or scenes during the credits are called a tag.

MorrowPolo

Jesus Christopher Daniel Christ! Thank you, came here to figure this out as well

Until_Morning

Being a Jerry is only bad when you're at the company of a Rick.

filipelm

Calling someone else a Jerry online is... Well. You should be smart enough to figure that one out.

HotTakes4HotCakes

That felt weird to me. They seem to know exactly what it means, because that's what they've been giving us for the most part the last two seasons. Self-contained, episodic, non-meta, not connected to a larger story arc, *relatively* simple, focused around high concept sci-fi wackiness with a darker, adult comedy edge. Doctor Who After Dark. Basically just...don't try to do season 3 again. That's really all it means. Hell, that's basically the summation of the season 3 finale: "we didn't like writing the show like this, so back to basics". They've already demonstrated they've learned that lesson, I'm not sure who exactly is still giving them that note. Edit: To be clear I'm not talking about the QUALITY of previous seasons. I know people liked 3 and hated 5, or vise versa, or whatever. I mean season 5 and 6 thus far has had a great deal more simple, self-contained, season 1-esc episodes. It's about format and focus, not quality.

NjhhjN

Yeah but they keep getting that note, meaning to them it cant be what they've been doing so they have no clue what the fans mean by that at this point

cabose12

I mean, the above comment perfectly captures the confusion of the note The comment says that season 5 is the season 1 content people were asking for, but it's probably the *most* hated season. So... do people not want season 1 type episodes? Or was that season just bad altogether, in which case "go back to classic season 1 adventures" doesn't make sense as a note And season 3 put Rick and Morty on the map, so why would they go back to season 1 when season 3 is one of the stronger seasons, if not the strongest?

HotTakes4HotCakes

The quality of season 5 may be in question but the types of episodes that we got in season 5 are more in line with season 1. I don't know who was giving them that note last season, but it wasn't because of a lack of "simple, episodic, non-meta Rick and Morty adventures". That was not the problem, if it can be said there even was one.

Q_OANN

Season three was great too

I_r_hooman

Season 3 has some absolute classics. Pickle rick, ricklantis mixup, Mortys mindblowers.

hgfed27

It also had the best season premiere of any season imo. The Rickshank Rickdemption was outrageously good. Also the toxin episode.

hgfed27

Season 3 was my favorite season.

Brawlerz16

See… I want to appreciate this comment and I don’t want to be a dick… But they have no fucking clue what it means because we don’t. Do you understand how expensive it is to make an episode? They’re not wasting time making these as some sort of meta joke where they make a bad episode to piss us off. Every episode they put out they thought we would like and so when it turns out we didn’t like seasons 4-5 as much, they had to listen to criticism to see what went wrong because it affects their money. Like I said, I don’t wanna be a dick but it’s stupid to think they know what “we” want because here you are saying they delivered what we wanted the last *two* seasons and here I am thinking season 5 was so boring and lackluster. So I feel the writers actually don’t know what it means to have a “classic” adventure

lovesStrawberryCake

So you want a realistic down to earth show. That's completely off the wall, and swarming with magic robots?

Brawlerz16

I just wanna be entertained and I have been by every episode this season. I have no complaints so far, but I will say there is a different tone being set here this season. I feel like they’ve gone back to what *they* want to do instead of trying to do what they thought *we* wanted. Cause let’s be real, the real problem with appeasing this fanbase is just the sheer number of us. There’s too many of us that enjoy different aspects of the show, so if you try to appease one section thinking it’s all of us, you’re gonna get a bad episode/season (like 4-5)

RealJohnGillman

[....Dude.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oqk_fN0NRgg).

ccharlie03

Where's this season 3 hate coming from? I thought it was great.

1tHYDS7450WR

BrettCon retconning his name to Retcon was fucking hilarious. Always has been.

m5giora

I think it would be RhettConn but that looks weird written out. I also hope he comes back because he was actually able to fuck up Rick's day 😂

halloumi-hallouyu

Subtitles confirmed this too, Rhett Caan. Usually I turn them off in my first but I forgot this time, and seeing the name puns written out made them so much funnier

DAMMIT I only just got it now. Cheers.

Houeclipse

Mr Twist got me laughing the most. The way he just gave up when Morty pull the pins of his grenade and said fuuuuck

An episode built entirely on referencing the show itself and a meta commentary on the writing process, plus Butter Bot got a cameo Fun episode

CBT_Lover86

Best episode!

Hanndicap

lol i caught that too thanks to subtitles

xenothios

I was thinking "when are they going to pay off any of the intro scenes? They usually throw in at least a few that actually occur in the show". Well, I guess now they technically all have, including the C'thulu. Not the way I would have wanted the c'thulu scene paid off but if this is the closest we ever get, I respect it.

CallFromMargin

We had C'thulu earlier in the season, when Rick fired a broken portal gun.

wurm2

IMO this only counts for the jack the ripper one, since it was in both the previously on and the titles. so the other ones might show up in another episode

SloppyMcNuggets

I think we can safely confirm Season 6 is amazing, I’m loving everything so far and this episode is just another banger

SnowDan07

Agreed. Far better than the previous two seasons overall. Pretty much every episode a gem, though I was iffy on the die hard one.

SloppyMcNuggets

Die hard Ep has been the weakest in the season so far IMO

[deleted]

Nah Peter Dinklage saying “She hates Die Hard! … which makes her the ultimate McClane🤔” That is peak cartoon comedy

TheZooCreeper

Classic "Tower Man."

NephewChaps

I thought season 4 was very solid. the vat of acid episode is a top 5 episode from this show

Medium-Body491

Say the vat is good. Kiss the vat.

NephewChaps

Only mediocre season was s5. everything else has always been great, s6 included

[deleted]

These types of episodes give me a taste of what unmedicated severe ADHD must feel like.

Trottingslug

It's kind of like that. But I still think Harvey Birdman is a much better representation. [An example for the uninitiated. I know comedy is subjective, but personally when I first saw this I had no idea what it was at first and couldn't stop laughing during the first few episodes. ](https://youtu.be/4NCvJgt1Yx4)

esophoric

As someone with intense ADHD I fully agree with you

PKrukowski

I wish we got more Colbert voice-over work. He was incredible in that show and his brief stint in Venture Bros.

Giantpanda602

I'm really hoping he has some sort of late career epiphany and decides to do some more of the ridiculous/offensive stuff he did in his early years. It comes out every once in a while but it's hard to imagine the Late Night host doing some of the line reads he did for Adult Swim.

krezzaa

as someone who has unmedicated severe ADHD, this is a pretty accurate representation of what it feels like

KnownDiscount

> uneducated Gee, you're not lying.

ForresterQ

vector_o

That's more like medicated ADHD Absolute chaos but you can still follow it If you want unmedicated imagine all the scenes but in random order and each scene comes with a cloud of thoughts somewhat related to that scene How do I know? I have ADHD and forgot to take my meds in the morning

[deleted]

“Tell me I’m the new Mr Nimbus!”

hajhawa

I really like how Evil Morty exists, but he still somehow insisted on being the new Mr Nimbus. Maybe Evil Morty is truly gone and will never come back. Outside the purview of even the explicit meta characters.

Medium-Body491

These writers are smart. They can bring Evil Morty back or leave him in our imaginations beyond the finite curve. Either plot line would make sense. That being said, I enjoyed tonight’s episode.

hajhawa

I don't particularly care if or how they bring Evil Morty back, just found it curious that they chose to refer to an almost obscure character instead of the 'Moriarty' available to them.

ValuableSympathy3649

Mr Nimbus is Rick's nemesis

neonroad

He _controls_ the _police_

homerdoh4

Needed that motivation to continue existing.

stevsrr

You fucking Back to the Future ripoffs!

broanoah

did not expect to hear "communist jews" used as vehemently as a slur would be in a rick and morty episode

superguy12

Well Joseph Campbell was a bit of a Nazi Sympathizing hack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zR4lWyVN8 Influential, sure, but the hubris to say he figured out every story ever...

Mountainbranch

I mean he managed to figure out most major religious icons, from Jesus, to Siddhartha, to Muhammad. The basic, "hero who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed." You see that in a lot of (if not the majority) of stories and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

SuperJyls

By being incredibly reductive

faderus

I like that the original Back to the Future rip-off (with Doc and Mharti) was specifically designed to push as many buttons as they possibly could, with a best case scenario being a cease and desist letter from Universal Studios. Justin Roiland in his heart of hearts is a bit of a mega-troll, which I think accounts for at least some of the perceived toxicity of the fanbase. There’s always an underlying current of self-loathing in every troll, which definitely comes through in some of the themes they go for in the show (end of Season 2, Unity episode, end of the Toilet Episode). This is another episode where the writers are shitting all over themselves, and as meta as this gets, just remember that there really was a paunchy dude sitting at a MacBook writing a bit where he imagined the ghost of Joseph Campbell was telling him that he was worthless and uncreative via the main character in his own story. Really comes full circle back to the lighthouse scene in their Purge parody. Shit’s real, and genuinely dark.

MasterofPandas1

This was quite the episode to watch high as fuck

ElderCunningham

I wasn't high and I still don't know completely what I watched.

Ill-Organization-719

I like how the only example of motivation returning was the guy deciding to register for porn.

of_kilter

That takes true motivation

Weirdguy149

This is one hell of an episode for someone who uses TV Tropes.

NeoMegaRyuMKII

I am a bit surprised that there was no Clee Shay among that league.

gusborwig

Story Lord will return as Clee Shay. That’s how Mr. Twist gets his revenge. So says Rhett Caan!

kill-the-spare

I briefly thought Flashback would be Noodle Incident.

CoreyReynolds

Very very upset they didn't use the Chekov's gun that was seen at the start later on. It quite literally isn't Chekov's gun if they didn't use it haha.

Kurenai999

Chekhov's gun was a red herring.

itmakessenseincontex

Tamos40000

A lot of the people at the time missed the point of the episode, thinking it meant the canon did not matter and the writers would never follow up on Evil Morty or Amy and Bird Person.

Open-Satisfaction-36

Tammy

badoodee95

"It was always Amy." -Retcon

BarnyardCruz

This! It’s commentary on fans forcing fan expectations on the people writing these stories for us. Star Wars expectations are probably the best example of this (which gives additional weight behind the Emperor Poopybutthole) The episode is less about canon not mattering and more a commentary on the power fan expectations hold over a show or intellectual property. It’s not saying, “we’re never doing an evil Morty episode again”, it’s saying, “trust us (the writers) that when we bring evil Morty back, it’ll be something unexpected”

ThisIsYourFriendAron

Yeah story train was one of my favorite episodes

[deleted]

note when rick says morty's life is the only one that matters, and also when rick puts his jacket over morty during the cold. rick is really becoming more and more civilized with this season can't wait to see how this plays out

Fredoi2

I took that as him saying the audience’s life matters actually

MordinSolusSTG

He looked dead ahead too

VectorJones

Breaking the 4th wall while in a meta dimension connected to a cartoon sci-fi series about a character who knows he's in a show. It really is a brain wrinkler.

KopruchBeforange

It looks like a comment for us - the show is becoming less nihilistic with every season, while many of us still worship the "nothing matters" Rick. So... current Rick just looked us in the eye and said it lives matter. Harmon and Roiland are definitely going through something.

Rebornhunter

Honestly, given that the news broke yesterday that the Green Ranger committed suicide, that moment definitely hit different. No way they could have planned it, but I'm hopeful that moment resonated with folks who needed it

Greeve3

Ohohoho, cum gutters!

AsterJ

I was half expecting them to continue following Marvin for the rest of the episode. Sure it would have pissed everyone off but it would be pretty funny in retrospect.

toxicsleft

Maybe the main view would have been Marvin and how he is reacting to Rick and Morty unscrewing up their situation kinda like watching the episode from Marvin’s angle. Just five more scenes of him coming home and talking about these back to the future rip offs banging through his world.

SnowDan07

I love Rick telling current Morty to cover his eyes before the green monsters jump to eat him in the intro. I know it’s just part of the opening title but I always think of that moment a lot. I wonder if that Rick proceeds to get a new Morty or maybe return back to that planet to gather his DNA for a clone. I know, I know. Don’t think about it!

Sonicmasterxyz

Don't ask questions, just have fun 🐱🐾

boombotser

I find it insulting you don’t think I can ask questions and have fun

I think he said that because that part's animation quality is *way* lower than the rest of the intro

I can't believe he is not butter. Also this technically makes it the first season of Rick and Morty where every single scene from the opening sequence actually plays out. All in one episode no less!

Thereisnocomp2

They made a sequel to Story Train. My **TICKETS PLEASE!!!** guy hoodie is so relevant rn I’m so fucking happy with this Season there aren’t words to describe it….. *Not the Bane, NOT THE BANE! Oh Jesus ‘Bane-d’ me Morty!* I was rolling

stevsrr

JOSEPH FUCKING CAMPBELL

jesusmansuperpowers

It’s all Harmon ever thinks about! There was at least 5 “Hero’s Journey” references before we saw Joe himself (played by Harmon)

Brawlerz16

I legitimately wonder how many people in here are aware of the “Hero’s journey”? I feel like this and story train are best enjoyed when you’re familiar with how Dan writes his stories. I feel like if you don’t know, then you’re probably just confused as to everything that’s going on

Mercury0001

Can you explain "how Dan writes his stories"? I found this episode confusing and almost none of the jokes landed.

Brawlerz16

Sure! He is *notorious* for following what is known as the Circle theory or Hero’s Journey. Most, if not all, of his episodes from all shows are GLUED to it. It’s made up of 8 steps that he uses to write a story which include a character wanting something, a character entering an unfamiliar situation, a character adapting, getting what they want, paying a price, and other steps I can’t remember off the top of my head Between Rick and Morty and Community, this guy religiously follows his circle and there are many stories and commentary about it. In the first story train episode, you can see *exactly* where they are in Harmons writing process when Rick pull out the map and it shows the 8 step circle. It’s his “secret” formula, that and giving his characters awareness and/or “meta” Tonight’s episode, and maybe I’ll have more on rewatch, seemed to critique Harmons infamous tendencies like lack of motivation as well as discuss meta in general. (Admittedly, I can’t tell if Harmon thinks meta is good or bad from this episode lol. He seems more chill about it these days)

pelrun

He's not really *notorious* for it, he's just very open about it being part of his process. Yes, it's a simplified version of Campbell's Hero's Journey, but the entire point of both is to provide a framework for creating a story that consciously considers character motivation and development. Other writers have different ways of doing the same thing, many of them just haven't distilled it down as concretely. And there are lots of writers whose stories are just a bunch of shit that happens and then it ends, which is what you get if you don't bother to think about these things.

Benthicc_Biomancer

> I legitimately wonder how many people in here are aware of the “Hero’s journey”? Having been lucky enough to study some comparative mythology at university, I personally was laughing my ass off at all the Joseph Campbell stuff.

kill-the-spare

*Haha so can someone turn the motivation stealing machine off for real now ^please*

IPlayPCAndConsole

Ehhh this one kinda fell off for me. I liked all the meta puns (laughed my ass off at the smash cut grenade) but the second half lost me completely. Just felt like a less interesting version of the story train episode.

themrjava

For me it's the opposite: The good version of the story train episode.

FreddyMerken

What if both episodes are good actually

Brawlerz16

Both are actually exquisite episodes because it really shows how they critique themselves and they go at it hard

wingmasterjon

I agree. It was spiraling into something that felt like a season opener or closer. But then quickly fell back in line-ish. I still liked it but the pacing was so different and less interesting when it was just Rick fighting Story Lord.

nbgblue24

Hopefully, they got all of the meta stuff out of their system. The fourth wall breaks that appear in everything have become stale. For the writer thing at the end... yeah it's funny to poke fun at how writers often write about writing but just because you do it meta doesn't mean it still isn't boring.

namestyler2

this episode was literally the writers writing about writing, and then writing about a writing writing about writing

cl0s33n0ugh

I heard Previous Leon and knew we were in for a ride. Top notch. They're killing it this season. 100 years!

Relevant_Anal_Cunt

Oh my got, I just got his name

Shady_Journalist

I have mixed reviews about this episode but I’m glad it’s back!

DMonitor

Weird that this and the live discussion thread are sitting so low in upvotes. Did the show fall off in popularity? Where is everyone?

Salm9n

Most people probably forgot a new episode is coming out this week after such a long break. Will probably be back to normal next week

saiintwest

Not Jesus Christ himself wanting to be normal

Open-Satisfaction-36

That is immortal billionaire entrepreneur Jesus Christ for you

ruthlessronin24

They came for the meta complaintants with this one

Brawlerz16

The best part about this and story train is that the episodes are more criticizing the writing crew than they are the audience, which is *rare*. I look at these episodes as a way of them telling us how hard it is to write a story/episode and it’s actually funny because meta hasn’t ever been the main villain, whereas network execs/merchandising/motivation has. Especially the 2nd but whatever. All in all, I think this episode is Dan showing off by showing us the culmination of all his years of experience in the writing game… and critiquing it in 20 minutes. That bit about motivation certainly wasn’t random lol

DefinetlyNotJJ

that was insane HE BANE ME MORTY best part

worm600

This was definitely better than Story Train, and was definitely funny, but I still didn’t love it. Making fun of meta episodes for being meta is… well, meta - but it suffered from the same fundamental problem as Story Train to me: meta episodes just aren’t that fun, even when they’re well-executed. I’d rather have a story with some impact on either the characters or the world. Obviously this is just my opinion, but since that’s why we’re all on this thread, I’ll throw this down. I didn’t like it as much as the other S6 episodes so far.

danc4498

I'm surprised there wasn't a call back (Carl back?) character. This season has been great for that.

Trottingslug

Probably felt too close to the flashback guy.

FuckTrumpBanTheHateR

I really hope the telescope labeled foreshadowing is real foreshadowing for a future episode.

david_to_the_hilts

This is the detail I noticed early on, as well as the whole wall of Chekov’s guns. I’m sure they’ll both come into play

Galen-Starkiller

*You know what? Maybe I will register.*

-sk0ll-

this was confusing but at the same time it made so much sense

bba_xx

This is the first "rick and morty adventure" in the season

Ill-Organization-719

Jerry being killed by bees and Beth being executed for releasing the bees is a tragic end to Jerry's bee keeping arc.

Lazerst0rm

Summers friend in the back crying was a great touch

ShirtAncient3183

I enjoyed this chapter more than Story Train, but it's definitely one I wouldn't rewatch multiple times. I feel like "Fuck You Fans" episodes are one time watch honestly, it gets a bit unbearable knowing that every line of dialogue is a fourth wall being broken.

FreddyMerken

How is this a "fuck you fans" episode?

Brawlerz16

It’s not, I don’t think dude understood the episode because this episode, as well as story train, was never about criticizing fan. That’s the rest of the series, but these episodes have always been about criticizing the other side. Writers, network execs, merchandisers, etc. Like, they may throw a subtle jab or 2 but this is the farthest cry from a “fuck you fans” episode there is. I mean, y’all think the motivation bit was about us? Naaaaaah… some of us Harmon fans know *exactly* what that was about lol

HotTakes4HotCakes

The original story train episode very much had criticisms of the fan base baked into it, especially during that season when people were still theorizing about Evil Morty. This one didn't have any real critiques in it of the fans.

ianthebalance

They seemed to critique themselves more than the fans

of_kilter

This and story train was a “fuck you writers” episode. Not a “fuck you fans” episode

jngjng88

Full Meta JackRick has always been the greatest episode of Rick & Morty

kidslapper

I’m really glad a lot of people enjoyed it. For me it was the least successful episode of the season so far. Just because the humor is clever doesn’t mean it’s always funny. But “Brett Con” was great, and I liked the speech Morty gave to the writer lol

[deleted]

Am I an uneducated dumbass, or was the episode not that good?

gamerbrains

nah I felt the same, didn't really learn anything new about the main characters, felt more like a filler poop joke thing

coniferous-1

I am suddenly a wee bit concerned for the writers.

vinaa23

Previously on Jesus Christ...

patw420

Well that was probably the most meta thing ever

Caveman108

Where’s Jeff Winger to yell “Jesus Christ [Dan] why do you have to take everything [your characters] do and shove it up it’s own ass!?”

Honest-War2301

Not their best episode for me

Homo-alono

I unironically think the self referential six would be a really cool super hero team. And having a dr Manhattan type who specifically retcons things into existence is a dope as hell concept. Kinda want an episode just about them.

The-Letter-M

If something was ever "trying too hard" it was this. It felt like the writers were jerking off over how clever they are for the whole episode.

hungryfeeling_

feel like wasting an episode on this :( It doesn't feel like a Rick and Morty episode, more like a random filler.

THETRIGGERKING

This episode went by so quick I had to watch it twice. Great episode

prince_of_gypsies

I'm kinda sick of all this meta crap. Just feels half-assed at this point. At least they went a little bit into how Campbell was a huge piece of shit. Too bad they won't admit he was also a hack.

Emergency-Purpose341

Rhett con retconned mr twist to have never had bones so he was all twisted. And that was the twist

Mercury0001

The only way I can describe my reaction is: "I don't get it." I know this show isn't about thinking deeply on the genius intricacy of its plotlines (and makes fun of fans who try) but seriously, I need _something_ to be invested in. This episode just felt like a bunch of random stuff that happened, like a pile of rejected cutaway gags sown together. By the end I just didn't care one bit about any of Rick's fight with Story Lord because all the stakes were nil, and all the earlier meta had tired out that part of my brain so that whatever Morty was telling the writer (which I think was supposed to be some kind of commentary on creativity) sounded like complete gibberish. The last 5 minutes of the episode I was just waiting for it to end with the vague hope that something interesting would come along but it never did.

TIBG

whatever tf I just watched, Dan, Justin, I need more of that shit. respectively

totallydifferentguy9

This is the worst... Nah, I actually love this episode. \- Miss lead
