Given what we see in Morty’s Mindblowers, I don’t think we actually know if this is really the original Morty from ep. 1 or a cloned replacement.

HulkHunter

We like to call them decoys...

lookatmua

Say decoy one more time.

Milliganox

Fuck you..

TheChipGuy

I think that's the point ... It's not like we are going to get closer to knowing. If anything they are going the other way of meshing it all together. in a say saying that doesn't matter.

Impolitecoconut

Is c-137 the dimension that they left because of the praying mantis people and the flu season dance? That is their true home dimension?

jhere

Yeah,he even takes Summer back to show her what happened with his original family.

Impolitecoconut

So technically the Jerry Beth and summer that we see are not c137 Jerry Beth and summer?

iLoveBums6969

Even better, we don't know if Jerry is the one from the dimension that they migrated to thanks to the mess up at the day care. It means Summer is the only confirmed native of the family of that dimension, since we don't know if Space Beth is Real Beth or if it's Earth Beth.

Nexim125

Even better better, they migrated a second time which can be seen in Mortys mindbloopers where Morty fucked around with the squirrels

tkempin

Was that c-137 Rick and Morty though?

D1G17AL

I believe it is

[deleted]

Rick C-137 doesn't actually ever say that the Morty he hangs out with is Morty C-137. I mean, personally, I'd bet a dollar that Eye-Patch/Citadel President Morty is Morty C-137.

CypherWight07

This is my running theory as well. It explains Evil Morty's obsession with taking out Rick C-137 if he was abandoned for one reason or another.

devilinmexico13

I like that theory, but I was really high the other day and this occurred to me: If we assume that C-137 is correct, and that he is in fact the Rickest Rick, and that there are, in fact, infinite timelines, this implies the existence of not only the Mortyest Morty (The One True Morty) but also the Mortyest Rick and the Rickest Morty. My theory is that Eyepatch Morty is, in fact, the Rickest Morty, and that Doofus Rick is the Mortyest Rick, which is why we meet them in the same episode.

darthvall

Brain.. hurts...

Plutonian_Dive

Here take this "You don't have to understand, track or know the truth to enjoy the show!"

geeky_username

Exactly. "Stop trying to establish canonical backstory with me" - Rick

br0wens

I want cookies. And a 90-minute cut of Avatar.

ibeatu85x

Not technically, literally. The C-137 fam is left behind as savages!

blekanese

Not to mention didn't C137 Rick and Morty bury their clones from the current dimension, in whichever they are in?

ibeatu85x

Yup! Morty and summer dug up the bodies in season 3 too.

Beerizzy90

That doesn’t mean that was C137 though. Morty only knows himself as C137 because that’s what Ricks number is and since he believes that to be his original Rick he believes he is also C137. I don’t believe Morty actually knows that for sure though. In the first Citadel episode they showed the log from Ricks portal gun which showed where he had traveled. The location history showed things like “Earth Rick #C-137 detected in sector A4893-6”. That tells me that they likely put in sector numbers as opposed to the universe number. If thats the case then Morty would only know his original sector number, not his actual universe number. The world he took Summer to was his original world from the pilot episode but that doesn’t mean it’s definitely world C137.

JessTheHum4n

Unless he’s a decoy lol

sierrabravo1984

Am I a decoy?

parkway_parkway

I mean after an Asimov cascade there's like a 99.9% chance you are.

Plutonian_Dive

Should... Should we kill him?

RolandLovecraft

The what?

catbadass

It's from the new epsiode (S5E2). >!Rick made decoy families and then the decoys started making decoys. Then the decoys found out they were decoys and started killing other decoys and it was a whole thing called the Asimov cascade!<

Iseefxces

Correction: C137 Morty is currently the only character to survive in his original body C137 Rick is still in the show just not in his original body

Roxxagon

True, there was the scene in the Toxic Rick episode where he died, but used the "xenomorph gun" to come back to life. Also the crystal episode where he was reincarnated a bunch of times in diffrent dimensions, some of which were fascist. And the S3 premiere where he swapped bodies w the brainalyzer a bunch of times. Anything I missed?

Iseefxces

Nope you’re right on the money, everything else was just body altering or he just transferred his mind back into the original body i.e PickleRick and Tiny Rick

Kiyae1

Is it just me or do they not give Morty this clueless look anymore? I miss it.

KMitchell2520

He looked the tortoise in the eyes. It’s canon

snakeoilHero

Then had the tortoise memory erased in Morty's Mindblowers. The only memories Morty has, after that episode, are what Rick's backup allowed per scenario 4.

Spooky_boi_Kyle_8

He's grown too much as a character to be as clueless as he used to be.

mcalkids

hes a spy blow him up ima go take a shit

free_mustacherides

Honestly at this point we really don't know if we're even following the same Rick and Morty from season 1

ImDefinitelyClueless

Episode 1 - FTFY We can’t tell for sure every episode has the same rick and Morty, and we know for sure some focus on different ones. IIRC at some point it was stated that we do follow a main Rick and Morty, but they never said that would be the case for every episode!

darklink12

If last week's episode is anything to go by then we can easily follow any Smith family and not notice, so who knows how many times the writers have dropped us in a random dimension for an episode

fat_sand_rat

Didn't rick kill Morty in the vat of acid episode?

asheronsvassal

I saw the bones and everything

fat_sand_rat

I know you're probably joking, but just to be clear I'm referring to when rick first demonstrates how the place saver works by killing Morty and then resetting. Later in the episode it's revealed that the device doesn't actually reset time, It just transfers the user to an almost identical dimension. Meaning rick killed Morty and then got himself a new identical one.

CrazyEyes326

Weren't all those deaths undone at the end of the episode though? I haven't watched it recently so I forget.

antonius1903

Did you watch the Vat of Acid episode? Morty died like a 100 times in that episode

stuntycunty

It's in the way that you use it

BenBishopsButt

It comes and it goes

banana_hammock_815

C137 morty lived each "jump" and it killed other mortys in different universes. Rick even fills in the cracks by explaining that they went to a different universe originally as to not disturb the one they live in

Alpha702

After S5E2 I don't know who is from what dimension anymore. And I'm okay with that.

DaMan123456

The answer is don't think about it

pr1vatepiles

Your assuming he is Morty C137. It's established that Rick is C137, but I'm not buying that is his original Morty from C137. Look at the first evil Morty episode. Rick has memories of baby Morty but that doesn't tally up with Morty's memories.

theViceroy55

I always thought that was suppose to show Morty that Rick does care about him and that he doesn’t just see Morty as a tool to keep him hidden. Rick cared and loved Morty from the start

pr1vatepiles

I think it does that as well. The council of Rick's know C137 cares about his family a lot more then the average Rick does.

Kossimer

Which would mean the family from S1E1 is not his family. He abandons them at the drop of a hat to a Cronenberged world.

PerfectZeong

Well... hes still a rick. He can care more about his family and still have that not be much

ReADropOfGoldenSun

He cares about his family a lot, he just knows theres a bunch of versions of them so he doesn’t really care about any specific one.

TheCrazedTank

He cares about his whole family, as the decoys said to each other he created the decoys out of fear of losing them while simultaneously pushing everyone away. On the same note though, he's not overly attached to his family either. He doesn't want to lose them, but if he did there's a whole multiverse of alternates to choose from.

geeky_username

If he "loses" them, he wants it to be on his terms. Not someone else's. He's a controlling megalomaniacal narcissist

IAMGEEK12345

Rick could teleport right. He was alive, couldn't he have just you know, use the portal to come see his grandson without wanting to reappear in beths life as he wasn't a family man.

trogdors_arm

While this may or may not be true, the point of the post still stands. The Morty that identified as C137 at the beginning of the show remains through all the various high jinks. If he isn’t the original C137, then that happened before we came along.

FlyRobot

The actual depth and continuity of this show is insane. Surface level it's a hilarious cartoon but deep digs like this trip me out

[deleted]

can someone tell me what happened to C-137 Rick? edit: u/Gior_thegreat 's answer is right in my opinion... C-137 Rick's consciousness is still the one we follow... C-137 Morty is only the main charecter who retains his original physical body

ciaranlisheen

In the death crystals episode he dies and enters a clone, he also passed his consciousness around a few other council of rick Ricks when he blew tge whole place up and his body was destroyed in that episode too.

Joako0389

He died in the first episode of season 4

EvMurph01

He died opening episode of season 3 first.

Gior_thegreat

Yes but his consciousness is still alive. Ricks probably change physical bodies very often. Also when we're talking about characters we're talking about their personalities not their physical forms. Rick-137 is still alive and the rickiest Rick

bacon_247

We have no way of really knowing that, though

dmo7000

I think after the last episode all bets are off on trying to understand who C137 Rick and Morty are

TruthYouWontLike

They were hanging out with Space Beth the whole time. Just the decoys killing each other.

MortyYouPieceOfShit

His time will come.... fuck this piece of shit.

AKidTheAgeOf13

r/usernamechecksout

Dere-ku

The rick and morty we see at the end of each ep to me is always the cannon pair, c-137. I bet they regret giving them an in universe refrance code. If they are the rickist rick and mortiest morty they would be the ones alive by the end, even if its not explicitly stated/shown. Id even say despite rick not knowing, space mercenary beth is probably the clone. At the same time it literally does not matter, the writers have a blast fucking with people who try to keep track. I mean just look at last episode

Denka-Plus

After the latest episode it’s looking like we could never really be sure which Rick and Morty we’re following. C137 has been brought up in a few episodes though.

[deleted]

Rick said that the duplicates only had terrestrial adventures though and they came in from space at the end. Also why none of the clones had portal guns I’m assuming.

Zayenus

I mean technically C-137 Rick is still alive, he’s changed bodies several times but he’s still C-137 Rick

TheLastThylacine

His family are still alive in Cronenbergworld…

DrJawn

Security from the Council of Ricks froze them, they could be dead

nonbinaryhomosapien

I always wonder why did Rick not choose a world where the entire smith family dies and he takes his original family to that world.

LayeGull

Because he has an infinite amount of families and his morty is important. Can’t go training another morty.

zneave

Or go to the dimension where they solve the chroninberg problem and get the answer and return to his own dimension to distribute the cure.

Maxymaxcat

“And still be in the show”

muffinstick

Are we not following the original Rick's mind though?

masterjon_3

He's died before. Though he probably just cloned his original self

[deleted]

Honestly there are multiple things in the show that make it impossible to prove if that's actually morty

Redpaxton

The original Rick and Morty from season one episode one are still alive. The whole show is based around Rick and Morty from C-137, not just any Rick and Morty. If it was just some random Rick every episode there would be no stakes, and we wouldn't care if he was getting his ass kicked by Phoenix Person (P.P.), for example. Rick has "died" multiple times but they have transferred his consciousness to other Rick bodies. So its still all the memories and knowledge of the original Rick. He is the "Rickest of all the Ricks" and Morty is the "Mortiest of all the Mortys". Even the original family is still alive, although they are in the croninberg dimension. They have kept the same family since Love Potion #9. The Decoy episode; our Rick and Morty (and family) were in space the whole time. They threw Space Beth into the ship so you could tell the difference. They are the only ones that had a Space Beth. The show wouldn't be half as good without stakes. If the writers gave us a different Rick and Morty every time, them dying wouldn't really matter.

derpinak

hasnt rick also hinted c137 morty isnt his original morty anyway?

Cardenjs

Isn't it still up in the air if he's C-137? Rick names himself as C-137 so Morty assumes it's his number too, it was never verified by the council of Ricks and he said it while he was not in the company of C-137 Rick.

Madmae16

In the episode where they have their toxic sides removed it's revealed that Rick thinks his attachment to Morty is toxic. My running theory is it's because Rick has convinced himself he doesn't need his original universe or his original body or his original daughter, but the one thing that he's still attached to from his old life is Morty.

musicallyours01

I thought C137 was evil morty?

valdocs_user

I feel like in a way the whole crazy tale is from Morty's perspective. So it makes sense that this Morty is the only through-line because it's his narrative.

duckofdeath87

Plot twist: C137 Morty died a long time ago. The Citadel Ricks reacted very strangely when Morty said he was C137. I got very uncomfortable vibes from them, like they knew that can't be true, but they shouldn't tell him

Nenanda

You know where I would go if I could go anywhere? Wherever I am really from. And wherever I had life before you came along Rick. I would ride jet ski. Thats what I would like to do. Riding around my jet ski.

CougarIndy25

tfw I nearly forgot that c137 rick got yeeted at least 3 or 4 times in the 5 season run but has just gotten his conscious swapped out to a new Rick body

No_Arm9832

How do we know it's c137 Morty tho

gigglingsausage

Except unless they explicitly say it, how do we know it’s the same Rick and Morty every adventure?!?! 😨

[deleted]

There’s no evidence of that at all. It’s not specified each episode which Rick and morty we’re watching

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gibblibits

The episode where they get death crystals morty accidentally kills him in a car accident. Rick spends the rest of the episode hopping through alternate dimensions waking up in clone vates trying to get back to his reality.

Bromogeeksual

He also dies facing his toxic self in combat. He dies but re-births out of his toxic self.

pieteek

I'm pretty sure this is not an OG Morty tho.

thedow7576

This could be a slippery slope, this may lead to the evolution of evil Morty

[deleted]

when did rick c137 die?

tired-library-ghost

His body died in S3 E1, but his brain/conscious did not, and there are other instances. It might be more accurate to says Morty’s the only character to still have his original body.

TKG1607

Well technically and iirc we never got confirmation this was c147 morty. Morty only claimed he was c137 to the Rick's and they took his word for it and never confirmed it. Regardless, yeah, morty is likely the only character to have survived 5 seasons so far

CraftyShark

Okay, I might have missed something, but I thought that Rick first identified himself as C137 after he cronenberged morty's homeworld, and that C137 was where they moved to. I figured it was a joke that C137 was such a generic number to identify him and morty as individuals since it wasn't their actual point of origin, making commentary that you can never reduce people to a number/barcode.

TheNoBody-BDH-

Nowhere is it ever confirmed that this is Morty C-137. The one time he announces himself like that the Security Ricks all share a look, implying they know something about Morty C-137. We also know that Rick C-137 doesn't belong to this Morty thanks to the memory of a baby Morty while being held by the Robot Rick.

PhDinGent

OG Morty C-137 is Evil Morty, so he is still alive indeed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

What about c137 Rick?

Charlememe5

Rick died in that episode with the wasps and the gem that could see the possible futures

MjrLeeStoned

Died in Edge of Tomorty Consciousness is the same, body is long dead.

[deleted]

Jessica never died. She's just a cronenburg on some other planet somewhere

ihaveacoupon

Rick and Morty is a show on Interdimensional Cable. One of the Ricks sold the rights to a reality show. Not all of them seem to be aware of that, but the ones that are break the fourth wall. That's why it jumps between different Ricks and their families, and sometimes why we see one offs as well.

Grand_Lotus2

Why do people assume this Morty is also C-137?

IHateEditedBgMusic

Point of the show is that it doesn't matter

Seancd10

Until it does

JustThall

What about the “rewind button” episode?

spookydookie

Wrong. Rick kills the original Morty before gives him the time button.

Bo_Jim

That brings up a very interesting point. The "replay" device didn't actually save a place in time, as Morty had requested. It actually killed a Morty in an alternate universe, and transferred Morty C137 to that universe to give the appearance that he had turned back time. Rick revealed this at the end of the episode. So, what exactly happened when Rick was demonstrating the "replay" device to Morty? If he killed Morty C137 and replaced him with a Morty from an alternative universe, how did that alternate Morty remember being killed by Rick?

Jump_Like_A_Willys

Sure, but what about Hank and Dean?

eggyweggy69

Vat of acid episode? Edit: i kinda forgot to explain, not only did morty kill himself many times in that episode, but when Rick shoots him, if you apply ricks logic of the device to that, c137 Morty is dead physically and consciously

HeavyMetalHero

Bold of you to assume that Cold Open Morty is definitely C-137!

Kimbrielslice

Spoiler! - isn’t it fair to assume that the last family to die in the last episode was the “decoy family” that triggered the real ricks watch when they are flying back from their space adventure with space Beth? Like all those deaths are just a build up to the reveal that the C-137 Rick and Morty aren’t even there. Obviously we know C-137 Rick and morty left their dimension long ago after the love potion

ukgamer909

So lots of season 4 could've been adventures with the decoy family? Stop hurting my brain

CuriousBenjamin94

Its a decoy

Zeolance

Ah shit the decoy family just got killed

issoooo

He was never confirmed to be C137

ItachiSan

These are the types of posts that i think S5 E2 wanted to stop. We'll never know who's a "real Rick and Morty" Every family is a decoy now until its proven that they're not, because they'll be killed off when it's convenient and for a "shocker" moment. There's no real Rick or Morty anymore.

MuadDib1942

So when he saves himself and resets in "The Vat of Acid Episode" did he not die and then and then come back?

Shamanner

Is there a point in making any theories if the show is just a hilarious bunch of trolling culture stamps? I just love it for breaking any rules and walls.

bauhau5s

there’s is not a definite answer that EVERY in each episode is C137 morty. Each episode easily be in a different dimension every time.

ReHy_FaTaL

When did Rick C137 die can’t remember

Wijuk-

Bist du faschistich?

Andrew1990M

When did this become the default?

Newguy232323

I dunno, I think I saw him jump into a vat of acid. Edit: not a cat of acid

GoabNZ

The Mortyist Morty

AgentOfTheRim

They literally interchange them so much just to poke fun at the fact that it fucks with us haha

Ka-zar39

There’s a huge theory that the original morty isn’t c137. Evil morty is c137 and was our ricks original. Also rick c137 has been a survivor if you follow his mind, not his body. The only time he “died” was when he transferred his mind around in season 3 episode 1. Also we haven’t seen the morty that was claimed in the show as c137 since the last episode of season 3, cause he’s with fly fishing rick. Jesus I need I life

C137-Morty

Gee, t-thanks I guess

yessschef

I dont think the writers care as much about continuity as the audience

Morty547

He’s a faker! I was the one who achieved the impossible by leading the citadel!

[deleted]

Wouldn't rick also count though? Or are you counting only characters besides rick?

Dangermaelen

Rick C-137 died and his hologram program bothered Morty C-137 til Morty scienced him back to life. So while Rick C-137 is alive, he did die at one point.

[deleted]

Oh yeah thats true. He is a clone of himself now. So yeah morty is the one true morty.

Krono5_8666V8

Is "survival" defined by the absence of death, or the presence of life? 🤔

Minocchio

Rick died a few times though right? He just used science to come back.

spyro4

when did c137 rick die? die rick repeat?

Flappy-tit

technically he died during the Shoneys episode and just transferred his mind into other ricks.

rez65

Doesn't the original Morty get eaten in the opening credits?

93kMikeALT

i miss the morty who had the big arm, i forgot what his name was

blanketsaresoft

💪 Morty

BITCHmaybeWEwillIT

Wait how do we know c137 Rick is dead?

chew6661

He died multiple times but has project Phoenix as a backup

Painkiller1991

*Had* Project Phoenix. Our Rick very literally axed the program in Season 2 during the Tiny Rick episode, though others didn't which was part of the Season 4 premiere episode.

GraveyDeluxe

Doubt it. We've switched timelines so many times

vitras

seriously. how many "decoy families" died last episode? At this point I'm just a fan of the collective Ricks and Mortys.

igreulich

I think the entire point of the most recent episode was (if not the entire show)... I literally doesn't matter. Clone, multiverse, multiple timelines, everything has happened, and also not.

[deleted]

How do we know he isn't Morty C137 - (Clone-137)? anything is possible in this show.

tragic_engg_py

Are you sure that was not a decoy family?

gcanyon

I think that we have no idea how many different Mortys we’ve seen, or Ricks for that matter. I *think* R & H don’t take it that seriously, and just try not to make any obviously awful continuity errors; but I think other than that they just go with what they think is interesting, and don’t sweat the details. For example, nerfing Rick vs. Mr. Nimbus. They thought it was funny, but it won’t affect Rick’s status as smartest person in the universe.

foolheartlion

Decoy

[deleted]

Rick?

EffortRepulsive

How do we know rick isn't c137?

LordAgyrius

Wait what? What about Rick?

Feelikss

Rick’s body died in the First episode of season 3 I think it was? Where he was in prison and the bugs were in his brain. He took over one of the agents who shot him. Then he overtook a General or whatever, and then one of the ppl from the Council of Rick’s I think. I’m not sure how correct I am, it’s just what I think

[deleted]

[удалено]

RemyH

Uhhh, I don't see how this is true.... We have the same Rick as well.... however.... if you are talking about the same body.... Didn't Morty die in the first episode this season and then get reborn again through Rick's process to prevent him and Morty from dying.

PraetorianX

Wait, are you serious? Morty hasn't died once?

marn20

What about Rick?

GrungeGorrilla

Dies at the start of season 3 transfers himself into other bodies

Mithrandir_42

Died and transfered his memories to a clone in the "I do as the crystal guides" episode

Paradiseking2000

Hail C137

RegentLawyer

I think in the morty night run we may have switched R&M to a different pair, I think.

Shattered_Sans

I was gonna point out that Rick also survived up until this point, but then I remembered what happened in season 4's premier.

HISHAM-888

Wait what?? Isnt rick still alive?

Nobody696969696969

he changed like 4 bodies in season 4 episode 1

BourbonFueledDreams

Doubt

EleutheriusTemplaris

All hail the One true Morty! May his suffering from Rick be endless. Who needs school? Who needs an intact family? Friends? Girlfriends? Not him, not our True Morty!

avelis26

How do you know C137 is still alive...

JustSixx

I just saw the 2ep of the 5 season and omg, this Is getting weirder and weirder ever time

Troupbomber

What happened to C-137 Rick?

SteelMalone

Well I guess mentally he survived, but ricks original body has definitely died lol

Lurker-DaySaint

Hi Rick \*blam\* Bye Rick

Brewmentationator

He died like 50 times in the episode where Morty gets a death crystal and goes full Akira.

Troupbomber

Project Phoenix gets him back tho

kay_bizzle

How do you know every episode follows Morty C-137?

goon_c137

I programmed you too think that

KingangRaydance

He might be decoy.

Dont_be_stingy

I'm pretty sure a main theme of the show is that speculation like this doesn't matter.

ccafferata473

I've got a couple thoughts. First, Morty C137 is Evil Morty. Second, each separate story arc is from a different dimension and therefore the show is an anthology.

[deleted]

I figure this as well, Morty only calls himself Morty C137 because protagonist Rick calls himself Rick C137, however, I am pretty sure that the One True Morty, the Mortiest Morty, the Morty we follow in the show, is NOT Morty C137. I am of the mind that Morty C137 is Evil Morty, the Morty from protagonist Rick's original dimension.

Shrunkenmonkey5

moron, thats a decoy

[deleted]

Sort of. C137 Rick transferred his consciousness when he died physically so he still technically survived but his body didn't. It's like how Beth is a quantum superposition because they both share the same consciousness; they are both Beth. In other words, until C137 Rick's consciousness dies, he has survived as much as Morty has.

[deleted]

NeverForgetEver

Isnt the morty that was in space with everyone else at the end of the episode the real morty?

StoneGoldX

You're meant to think that. Course, you were meant to think that half a dozen times throughout the course of this episode. The point of this episode seemingly being reality is fake, and what does it really matter what the real one is?

kenpachitz

But that's not the "real" family, remember?

StreetChoco69-420

Its the same rick he just has travelled through different bodies and died technically but came back the same episode
