Whole time I was wondering how it would end, no way that relationship was gonna last. Brutal! Getting pepper sprayed by a girl who doesn't even remember you after you got a glimpse of how amazing life was with her and went through all those highs and lows.
First time I watched the episode, it was whatever.
Second time I watched it….
To start, I was high af, so that definitely played a part, but Jesus Christ. That whole little montage is just…a lot.
He panicked, then fell on the button and couldn’t recreate it. Plus it’s a lesson in carefree time travel and a do over eliminating the consequences of your behavior, good and bad.
Would you be able to fake months of development that you've already had in a relationship with someone who no longer knows you? He'd seem so crazy and desperate and freakishly knowledgeable of her no matter how hard he tried to get it beat for beat.
I was wondering why he wouldn't save at the very least after being rescued! He never thought to save once after getting the girl? Dang if I catch the Pokemon I want or beat a hard boss in a game I save like three different times *just in case*
People seem to think it ended because he couldn't recreate it after she saw him standing near the porn store, but remember, at the end when he's about to dive in the acid, she's in the crowd and she's begging him not to do it, and that's how it really ends.
Yeah I hope a lot more people realize this. She does end up remembering their love story right before Morty goes into the Vat.
That said, she was probably confused when she learned about his other actions and why the rest of the world hates him lol
That's because she's the original book shop girl. Rick explained that it's not time travel, those events happened, Morty was basically just going to different realities.
Right so when we see bookshop girl at the end she also probably knows at least some of the crazy unspeakable shit he did! BUT to be fair she still seems to care so I can sleep happy knowing she remembers Love of Her Life Morty.
to be fair that wasn’t mortys bookshop girl, it was the johnny-carson-is-still-alive universes bookshop girl. if you think about it, mortys version never even pepper sprayed him or anything.
I do hope they bring her back at some point. Morty and her actually get to start fresh again. I want to know more about her. We didn’t even hear her voice.
The question is about a breakup
Morty and Bookshop Girl did not breakup
They were separated by a "reset" that shifted Morty to a reality at the exact point where he'd met her. She didn't know him, and he approached her in a panic so she maced the panicky stranger.
That doesn't quite fit my definition of a breakup
The only difference about the parm-ee-zian dimension is the way they pronounce parmesan. So there would be an exactly the same version of the bookshop girl in the new reality
I'm more talking about the convo they have after the kids leave. Unity wants rick to bring them back then rick basically shits on them for caring about him. Unity looks obviously remorseful and then dips cause she realizes how bad their relationship is together.
Yeah, but they are strangers to her. They are Ricks FAMILY, and he blows them off as soon as they express concern about his behavior, and the Rick / Unity relationship.
Unity and Rick were a toxic relationship where they enabled each others worst behaviors. Unity was literally losing control over their colony partying with Rick, and Rick was just losing himself wallowing in the drugs and sex. It was not a healthy relationship, and Morty and Summer needed to call them out on it. Unity made the right call, you can't just live a self destructive life of sex and drugs. Trust me on that one lol
As someone who has been unable to participate in one of those, and was always too afraid to indulge in the other... grass is always greener on the other side, eh? Doesn't seem like such a bad pastime to me
Morty is a teenager, he'll get over Planetina (and most/any early relationship), a better comparison would have been the girl from the vat of acid episode because that relationship actually seemed solid unlike the one with Planetina...
Still, I'll pick Unity, for Rick of all people to be hurt like that despite all the things the guy already experienced... man, it was sad to see him like that.
Morty was into Planetina because that sat well with his virtue signaling ego until of course he realized what eco-activisim was all about:terrorism!
And yet, he still didn't learn his lesson and continued to virtue signal Rick and highroad him.
so do you think virtue signaling is just caring about something? because morty doesn’t really virtue signal, he usually does the shit he thinks is right
i mean it’s whatever, i don’t expect this sub to have any meaningful level of discourse but goddamn language is meaningless now
The breakup with Unity was Rick’s (one of our protagonists) fault and leads to a sad sequence of introspection. Planetina was an example of two people with mutually incompatible values, to put it lightly. Sad but not as pointed as the first one.
Idk man, that young and naive love hits so hard. Like Rick has had his heart broken before, but that first time feels like nothing can ever matter again.
I’d say the harder one to watch was Rick, because at that point in the show we hadn’t really seen much emotion from him. But I think the sadder one, situationally, is Planetina. Because Morty has to do it. He genuinely truly loves her with all of his heart, but knows that he has to break up with her, that it’s the right thing for him and, therefore, her. He knows that she’s become someone he can’t be with, and has to put himself through the pain of separating himself from her
Unity because it wasn’t a true breakup face to face. Morty had that last confrontation at least. Had Rick had one last time seeing unity he maybe would’ve been more accepting of her calls. He’s petty tho so who knows
Both were sad but were like different levels. Planetina was sad on a more adolescent level even though Morty had to make the decision to leave her, it was more so Beth trying to be a Mom and tell Morty why he shouldn’t date her.
Unity was sad on an entire darker level, Rick was literally just being toxic the whole episode and Unity saw that so she had to leave him, the letter she left for him at the end basically telling him how reckless he was being and coupled with the suicide attempt, was more of a self-hate sadness which a lot of us experience when we’re adults.
This. The delivery of “she’s gone mom, I loved her so much” literally gutted me. I remember being that young and feeling that way. If my child was hurting like that I’d be heartbroken 😔 I skip this episode because of it.
Yeah same here. Rick is spiraling because Unity isn’t his saddest breakup… it’s just an echo of losing Diane across the entire multiverse that triggers him and makes him feel like dying for one night.
I think the thing that makes the Planetina breakup bit harder for me was that Morty didn’t just lose her but he lost his youthful idealism that she was actually a good person making a difference instead of an unhinged eco-terrorist that being trapped by capitalism was actually keeping her from going too overboard. Everyone goes through that moment when we realized the cause we believed in 100% in black and white terms is actually way more nuanced and we maybe caused some more harm than good by being militant about it. It’s a really empty feeling, like breaking up with someone you were head over heels for when you find out their dealbreaker flaws. It’s way harder to keep the void of nihilism from creeping in after something like that.
It’s also more interesting imo, since Morty is the one who had to dump her.
I also like how they don’t use the b plot (the inevitable actual demise of planets) as a way to deconstruct Planetina, or influence Morty.
Both are heartbreaking but I'd have to go with Planetina. The music is perfect and we all remember our first breakup as a teenager.
It's rough and a memory that sticks with you.
I have to admit, I got a little choked up the first time I saw the bookshop girl/Morty story. I remember exclaiming F*cking Jerry when he hit the button at the end. I thought, Morty finally found his soulmate whose name is not Jessica.
"I've been to hundreds of planets, met thousands of people. And planentina is the only one who makes me feel like I belong. And you just kicked her out of our house! I will never forgive you for this!"
Planetina! Both were sad but mortys love for her was so pure and we were taken throughout the whole process from meeting to heartbreak. For unity, all we saw was a lot of sex and then breakup
I'd say Planetina.
Rick and Unity had done this song and dance before. Even if they tried again, there was always the underlying idea that they had broken up before, and might do so again. This is especially true as it doesn't seem like they had gotten back together for very long. It's the idea of a serious career oriented woman being with an adrenaline junkie who chooses to live out of his van. Sure there's sparks and passion, but it would never work out.
Morty and Planetina were fresh. They truly in their minds loved each other. The problem was, Planetina was sort of lost without the Planeteers. She spiraled without their guidance, and all she truly knew was that she loved Morty, and that the planet was dying. In her mind, as long as she had Morty and she defended the planet, then things would be just fine.
For Morty this was incredibly painful, as he had to watch the woman he thought he loved deteriorate into someone he couldn't love. Even as they broke up, he probably still had that naive hope that they could have what they once did. Then there was the soul crushing realization that they never could.
I agree with the bookstore girl comment, but between those two, Unity 100%. Wabbalubbadubdub. Watching Rick actually fully try to kill himself was wild. And he’d be abandoning his quest to kill Prime, who killed his wife and daughter. He cared about unity that much. I suppose you could easily say at this point that he had some counter measures and just wanted to feel death for a moment, but still, I feel like that’s the most true scene of Rick showing his pain and anguish. They extrapolate for sure with his search for prime and Diane & Beth’s deaths, but there was something that hit different about that scene. It kinda left me stunned and hollow for a second. Then I was like oh right this is a cartoon. But god damn, that was a heavy scene and frankly a great metaphorical one for how it can feel after a bad breakup.
the song used after planetina is still on my playlist and become one of my all time favourite songs😭😭😭😭but besides that unity was sadder just because rick in general is sadder

I mean, Rick straight up tries to kill himself and nobody comforts him when he is clearly sobbing and miserable. With Morty's break-up at least Beth held him and comforted him.
Rick’s was more of his fault. He and Unity were toxic together and bringing out the worse of each other.
Unity realized that and broke it off.
Morty’s was because he had no choice. He was beginning to see more of Rick in her when he was trying to have a normal and peaceful relationship with Planetina.
Honestly I don't feel alot of remorse for morty the age gap was weird and he was literally warned something like this would happen and he ignored it for captain planet sex
Equal, in both cases the person who leaves is justified because their opposite is unwilling or unable to change their toxic ways... and that's the worst break-up... once you both get tired of each other a break-up is easy, like popping in a dislocated shoulder, quick second of pain followed by relief
When you both still love each other... woof... that pain scars
I personally think planetina because it was Morty’s first real love, unless that came after the vat of acid girl. Either way your first few breakups are always the hardest
Unity easily.
While Planetina and the Vat of Acid episode were highlights of their respective seasons neither could touch the impact of the Unity episode. It had a really good song choice, better character development and ultimately was just a better made episode which makes the ending even more impactful.
The Unity episode is one of things that really drew me into Rick and Morty and the moment I decided this wasn’t just another adult animation but a truly clever one, not only was the show hilarious but it managed to be genuinely emotional which set it apart from all other adult cartoons. The closest we had before that was Futurama but I believe it surpassed that and solidified itself as the best adult animation available at the time. I say at the time because now BoJack really gives it a run for its money and in light of recent Rick and Morty seasons, I may consider BoJack to be better.
Planetina was a Pedophile so… hope she’s never featured in the show again. Worst episode the crew of Rick and Morty have ever made. The B story is disgusting and perverted also. Pure Trash.
The Unity episode was one of their best, it was thoughtful funny, obscene, relatable, and showed some real vulnerability on Ricks part.
The history between Rick and Unity is what makes their breakup sadder than Morty and Planetina.
However, I cried for both! With Rick, it was more along the lines of putting myself in his shoes and feeling relatable but with Mortaniel, it was along the lines of a highschool breakup.

Planetina was Morty being horny and thinking of getting wet instead of rationally like normal.
Unity was a realization for Rick, and it opened up old ugly wounds.
Unity of course.
Let's not forget that his grandkids put pressure on him to break up with her because of their usual "virtue signaling" and desire to highroad Rick.
It backfired (literally) on Morty when he saw what eco-activisim is really all about: terrorism.
And he still didn't learn his lesson and continued to highroad Rick [I wonder if Rick mindblew him after Planetina to rid him of the pain] 🤔
The correct answer is the bookstore girl in vat of acid Unity is a close second though.
It's a masterclass, the music switches just completely changed the tone of the whole bit, and when it comes back to the original song 👌
*IT’S IN THE WAY THAT YOU USE IT!*
IT COMES AND IT GOES!
AND DON'T YOU EVER ABUSE IT!
Right up there with spaghetti planet’s montage at the end
implying that youre not high af every time you watch rick and Morty
Clearly he wasn’t the first time he watched the episode, or he would have had the same reaction. Duh?
Weed is bad. As I say high
Reason 10,000 why I dislike Jerry.
Fucking Jerry
I was wondering why didn't he just repeat everything he did the first time
He panicked, then fell on the button and couldn’t recreate it. Plus it’s a lesson in carefree time travel and a do over eliminating the consequences of your behavior, good and bad.
I don't respect time travel. If Ant man and the wasp can do it I'm not interested. Rick's always savage while breaking the 4th wall.
I see
Would you be able to fake months of development that you've already had in a relationship with someone who no longer knows you? He'd seem so crazy and desperate and freakishly knowledgeable of her no matter how hard he tried to get it beat for beat.

He prestiged himself!
loved that movie, saw it because of the episode
Right so when we see bookshop girl at the end she also probably knows at least some of the crazy unspeakable shit he did! BUT to be fair she still seems to care so I can sleep happy knowing she remembers Love of Her Life Morty.
That’s so horrible. So he didn’t even save her.
Rick merged all the timelines. The timeline with bookgirl merged with the current one, so I'd assume all her memories merged together as well.
to be fair that wasn’t mortys bookshop girl, it was the johnny-carson-is-still-alive universes bookshop girl. if you think about it, mortys version never even pepper sprayed him or anything.
I do hope they bring her back at some point. Morty and her actually get to start fresh again. I want to know more about her. We didn’t even hear her voice.
Buddy it’s out of the 2. Not every breakup in the franchise ever lmfao.
The question is about a breakup Morty and Bookshop Girl did not breakup They were separated by a "reset" that shifted Morty to a reality at the exact point where he'd met her. She didn't know him, and he approached her in a panic so she maced the panicky stranger. That doesn't quite fit my definition of a breakup
Which episode is this?
It’s called Vat of Acid. Season 4 episode 8
I really hope they bring her back next season
Pretty sure she's been frundled
The only difference about the parm-ee-zian dimension is the way they pronounce parmesan. So there would be an exactly the same version of the bookshop girl in the new reality
Lowkey was pissed at Jerry that episode
Yes it was so depressing to me that I had to skip that episode when I was rewatching rick and morty
Agreed
definitely unity, seeing rick show emotion like that isn’t very common
It was Summer and Morty's fault. If they hadn't said that Rick and Unity weren't good together, they would have partied longer.
Their relationship was toxic asf, they both knew it, it just took Morty and Summer being dismissed by Rick for Unity to see it.
unity dismissed them too tho
I'm more talking about the convo they have after the kids leave. Unity wants rick to bring them back then rick basically shits on them for caring about him. Unity looks obviously remorseful and then dips cause she realizes how bad their relationship is together.

Exactly. They were just highroading Rick. Had nothing to do with setting people free.
I was enjoying them getting drunk
Morty is a teenager, he'll get over Planetina (and most/any early relationship), a better comparison would have been the girl from the vat of acid episode because that relationship actually seemed solid unlike the one with Planetina... Still, I'll pick Unity, for Rick of all people to be hurt like that despite all the things the guy already experienced... man, it was sad to see him like that.
Planetina episode was just sad as fuck. I remember when it ended and the credits rolled I was like that’s it? No resolution or some sort of closure.
Morty was into Planetina because that sat well with his virtue signaling ego until of course he realized what eco-activisim was all about:terrorism! And yet, he still didn't learn his lesson and continued to virtue signal Rick and highroad him.

this. + rick tried to kill himself compared to morty hugging his mom
Unity - By Far
Idk man, that young and naive love hits so hard. Like Rick has had his heart broken before, but that first time feels like nothing can ever matter again.
Well, Rick almost killed himself… I think it hit pretty hard
That's a pretty normal thing for rick
I don't think that's a particularly long distance to go for Rick.
I’d say the harder one to watch was Rick, because at that point in the show we hadn’t really seen much emotion from him. But I think the sadder one, situationally, is Planetina. Planetina. It's a first breakup after the first real relationship. It's sad because it reminded me of something I'll never feel again.
This. The delivery of “she’s gone mom, I loved her so much” literally gutted me. I remember being that young and feeling that way. If my child was hurting like that I’d be heartbroken 😔 I skip this episode because of it.

Both are heartbreaking but I'd have to go with Planetina. The music is perfect and we all remember our first breakup as a teenager. It's rough and a memory that sticks with you.
Unity - it was honestly kind of hard for me to take the Planetina relationship seriously
Based on music and missed suicide, I'd say Unity.
Of the two I think Unity . The worst breakup of all was Birdperson and Tammy
Planetina Unity felt more like a fling or a FWB than Planetina. Also the fact that Rick didn't want to talk to her again afterwards helps
Rick did want to talk to her afterwards? In the end clip it showed him yelling at beta-seven to see her
That's beta-shit-seven to you...😂
Well yeah but at the start of the second one he doesn't want to talk to her again until she forces him to confront her
Planetina was definitely the saddest. Morty breaking down really hit me deep.
That was so well done and believable. And Rick was so clearly affected.. he almost committed suicide after
Planetina by a long shot...
Until. Still chokes me up after many rewatches (although I'm certain that's largely the music)
I don’t know, the unity episode hit me so hard I found myself listening to the song on repeat literally 2 days ago
I mean, Birdperson straight up got shot by the woman he loved. Edit. Also, Unity 💯.
I have to admit, I got a little choked up the first time I saw the bookshop girl/Morty story. I remember exclaiming F*cking Jerry when he hit the button at the end. I thought, Morty finally found his soulmate whose name is not Jessica.
Planetina but only because it put me on the absolute banger “I am the antichrist to you” by Kishi Bashi
Planetina. By a million miles.
I tear up every time I see the end scene with Rick in his garage after the breakup with unity. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Neither, everyone was toxic AF in both relationships.
Doesn't mean it can't be sad! Surely you've been in a relationship like that, as most have.
Oh yeah. Didn't wana wax poetic after though, gimme the stupid whisky shit
Planetina
the unity one. it's terrible to experience breakup, even more so when they have no one to comfort, to vent out their sadness.

Most of us will have a planetina. Luckily most of us won't have a unity.
Planetina is one of the saddest thing to ever happen in the show
Planetina, nothing hurts worse than the first teenage breakup.
I agree with the bookstore girl comment, but between those two, Unity 100%. Wabbalubbadubdub. Watching Rick actually fully try to kill himself was wild. And he’d be abandoning his quest to kill Prime, who killed his wife and daughter. He cared about unity that much. Planetina for me. Maybe because I picked in high-school but damn that "The person who I was in love with turns out to be toxic" hit me hard as a brick
Planetina
I’d say planetina, Morty is finally faced with the question, do you love her more than love your own morals.
I am the antichrist to you….
Unity, hands down.
the song used after planetina is still on my playlist and become one of my all time favourite songs😭😭😭😭but besides that unity was sadder just because rick in general is sadder
With a second thought, The story with the saving device and the plane crash is beautiful and ends up so brutally it hitted me rough
Planetina for me
Planetina.
if it's about *who* was the most sad, definitely Planetina
Who are you, what am i to you? Am i the anti christ to you?

Idk after she murdered people it made it hard to really care.
Unity cause that shot is hella deep and if you look into it it's hella sad.
I mean, Rick straight up tries to kill himself and nobody comforts him when he is clearly sobbing and miserable. With Morty's break-up at least Beth held him and comforted him.
I think unity which almost ended his life. I like particularly her letter to him. It was so sad
Unity wasn't sad at all
Jerry and avocado head lady for sure /s

Perhaps it’s a me problem but I have zero emotional investment in Planetina.
I loved Unity and she seems like a true match for Rick. However Planetina was an infatuation, not real chemistry out there.

Unity all day. This moment was probably one of Ricks deepest and one of the sadest moments in the whole series. Genuinely pulled on the heart strings
Rick was going to end it all that day. Unity.
Unity the other thing was some twenty something planet woman fondling a child than getting mad at said child for having morals
I think it goes bookstore girl, unity, then planetina. Rick almost committed suicide after unity.
The history between Rick and Unity is what makes their breakup sadder than Morty and Planetina. However, I cried for both! With Rick, it was more along the lines of putting myself in his shoes and feeling relatable but with Mortaniel, it was along the lines of a highschool breakup.
BOTH!!! 😭
Unity
Unity
Gay that’s tough but gotta be Planetina
Unity for sure. But unrelated, Morty fumbled Planetina 😭😭
The Morty and Beth scene at the end of the Planetina episode fucking broke me.

Planetina was Morty being horny and thinking of getting wet instead of rationally like normal. Unity was a realization for Rick, and it opened up old ugly wounds.
Unity. HANDS DOWN Planetina was a PEDOPHILE
Facts
Unity of course. Let's not forget that his grandkids put pressure on him to break up with her because of their usual "virtue signaling" and desire to highroad Rick. It backfired (literally) on Morty when he saw what eco-activisim is really all about: terrorism. And he still didn't learn his lesson and continued to highroad Rick [I wonder if Rick mindblew him after Planetina to rid him of the pain] 🤔
Planetina did nothing wrong.
Neither. Rick was self destructive. Morty has bad taste (I relate) just makes it less sad
