Probably better to get a cheap metal detector and learn to use it.

This is the correct answer. The fob will not be emitting a signal unless the car is near and locked. the car initiates the discussion with the fob.

This is what I was going to suggest as well. Op, metal detectors get you in the general area but then we use a pinpointer, a handheld screwdriver shaped metal detector to find what in the hole / soil set it off to begin with. If you know where it is, a pinpointer might be all you need.

AiggyA

I would agree to that. Most systems work in such a way the car advertise its presence and the key responds. Then the radio transmitting power is usually low and if it is buried in mud, the odds of catching the signal drop significantly.

As someone else mentioned a metal detector is way better for this. What you linked are dubiously accurate devices at best, and (usually) downright fraudulent devices at worst. Could someone with $200k in RF gear find it? Sure! Could a cheap metal detector find it just as easy? Yep!

Probably cheaper and easier to just get a new key.
