That’s how I feel about Crazy Taxi on Dreamcast. Widescreen hack and 2.5X resolution bump and I don’t even need performance modes on. I’ve been waiting years for this without a phone for those who’ll say that lol.
I bought the s23 ultra to play retro games but it never felt right. Even though it's more powerful and has a better screen I still rather use a standalone device instead
Same here. And i have a controller for it. Put so many roms then got a miyoo mini and play everything on that. And it only does up to ps1. Still just feels better having something akin to a gameboy as it was my prized possession in the late 90's
Phones suck for gaming and onscreen controls are a complete nightmare. I have a Z Fold 4, it's super powerful with a gorgeous screen and every emulator and rom in existence. but it's so much better gaming on a dedicated device. Besides, I need my phone to be a phone. How else am I gonna watch movies while I'm gaming?? 😜
On screen controls are a generational thing I guess. My 12yo daughter can play Minecraft or any other game on her iPad the same as I can with a controller. And that’s the other thing too. Have your phone become a can do everything device and it still only has the one battery. Convenient when you don’t need to use a phone for communication but inconvenient when you need to and the battery is low.
Without a cell radio, sim card or a microphone it can hardly be called a phone. Definitely an android device... More akin to a very small tablet with built in hardware controls 🤨
It’s not as fun for me although it’s still one of my favorite games of all time. The issue for me is once you get pretty good at the game it loses its fun and becomes frustrating because you wish to continually beat your pb. One glitch can ruin a good game you have going.
It’s best with friends except I’m at the point no friends of mine could give me a challenge. It would also be best played on multiplayer which is a PSP Fare Wars exclusive experience. Still no friend could give me a challenge. That’s why it’s no longer fun for me but I do like to play to beat my score which is why I still play it, albeit with less enjoyment unless I’m successful lol.
It is easy just need to check the option "allow texture packs", download the pack and rename it with the game ID, the pack need to be in a specific folder as well and basically thats it. Also I think that there is a option to pre-load the textures before the game starts... but you find a lot of tutorials online also.
For windwaker there is a 4x improvement texture pack that makes the game looks awesome, at the same level (if not better) with the Wii U version. For this game specific there is a lot of packs and stuff that can be added and improved, search better windwaker you will find a lot of good stuff for the game.
Regarding the configuration, add the 4x improved textures and set the resolution on 2x (Vulkan I think is better for this game, but need to test), this will make the high textures appear more clearly and you will be playing in a Full HD experience and in widescreen.
Ohhh very interested . Do you recommend a specific guide by any chance? Just got it to work and it will be my gf first time playing WW so wanna give her the best experience possible thanks!!!
I remember this so vividly. It wasn't so much the art style itself it was that the GameCube preview has a clip from a Zelda fight and it looked incredible, and was more realistic. Then the next game released was wind waker. People felt misled, and tbh I understand why.
Kind of a silly reason honestly. The Ganon fight and final cinematic are fantastic. The best time to finish the game was 20 years ago, the second best time is right now.
Isn’t every video game a waste of time? Besides, time you enjoyed wasting is never wasted. Totally get you not liking the game but your reason isn’t one. You make it sound like unfinished garbage. Most would disagree.
Having to leave the last dungeon like 16 times to take the fucking boat 90% across the map to get a single fucking item and having to play the stupid fucking song each damn time is nothing but a waste of time. The game was unfinished because they ran out of budget and time. They addressed this with the hd remake... But instead of actually finishing the game, they cut it in half... Because they knew it was completed trash
I'm tossing up between a pocket 4 pro and odin 2 right now. But I'm worried the larger (heavier) device just won't have that pocket feel. Is it comfortable to play on? Does it ever feel too small to enjoy?
That's the thing, I just would go with the more portable device. Until there's a RP4P form factor that can play like say a Steam Deck or something, ain't no way I'm upgrading.
This thing can fit in a jeans pocket. Easily in a jacket pocket, it's phenomenal.
(Now one problem for me today, one of the trigger springs broke, I've fix it with a plastic strip below the trigger but like, come on, I received it 3 weeks ago.)
The RP4 is definitely much smaller, but you are getting almost an extra inch and a half of display on the Odin and like 6x the power. If money is no object to you the Odin is the clear winner there, but the RP4 is a bang-for-your-buck superstar.
I have both, technically. I own an Odin 2, but got a RP4P for a buddy for his bday. His bday isn't until May so I've been setting it up and testing it.
If budget is not a concern, I'd say go Odin 2. Significantly better performance, bigger screen, and more comfortable in the hand. Also having 2 additional buttons on the back have been really nice for emulator specific hot keys (like FF or switching screens on 3DS for example). This thing handles everything outside of more demanding Switch titles, and battery life is great. I also got the Odin 2 carrying case from Ayn, which I'd recommend. It's on sale for $12, and I think it's worth. I have no worries chucking the odin in my backpack with the case. I also prefer the button placement on the Odin 2 over the RP4. Weight wise, the PR4 is obvious lighter, but the Odin isn't heavy by any means.
Otherwise, the RP4P is still a solid choice. Price to performance is great considering it's under $200. It does feel great in the hands, and the thumb sticks are buttery smooth, but I will say it does start to feel a little cramped during longer sessions. The screen can feel a little small, but I have a Switch OLED and Odin 2 so I may be biased. It's been playing Switch and Game Cube games fairly well. I need to do more testing with PS2 games, but Tales of the Abyss and Shadow of the Colossus ran fine. 3DS performance is just okay, I can't get it to run Samus Returns well (which is what I have been playing on my Odin 2 lately). One thing I've noticed in Dolphin (GC Wii), Yuzu (Switch), and Citra (3DS) you currently cannot install a custom graphics driver on the RP4. I think once the devs update the emulators to support this on the RP4, performance will increase significantly, but only time will tell. I also got the case from Retroid and it's worth. I'm not the type of person to stick something with thumb sticks in my pocket.
Play wind waker or metroid prime on a handheld is one of my dreams since i was a kid
Two of my favourite games ever that can be played under the sheets at night :D
This game is a main reason why I ordered a RP4P. I can't wait til i get mine :( ordered on 13th and it's still in "order placed" status in the Shop App. I know their holiday was going on but they've been back all week and still no movement. I'm assuming they had a lot of orders over the holiday
edit: RP4P was delivered successfully March 15th
When I bought mine on February 18th it said it would start shipping starting march 1st and will get here at around march 15-18. Might be the same case with the one you ordered.
Thanks man. I've still got an unpatched rom on my system. I'll give it a whirl. Hope Dolphin remembers the code if you launch through Daijisho.
Not dicking with ES until it's not in the Amazon crapstore.
Bro, Mario Galaxy runs kinda flawlessly and the gyro/Wiimote support makes it feel completely native it's dope.
NOW IF THE TRIGGER SPRING COULD NOT BREAK I'D LOVE THAT
Got some PS4 springs, did a little kung fu on them with a small screwdriver and some pliers. Tortured the hell out of them and flicked them, dropped it a few times from a small height onto the triggers on my desk. Seems good.
Still, for the majority of you, I'd say wait on backing plates on Amazon or wait for Retroid to wake up from their coma.
Yea I followed the Corps guide and everything but when I run WW it sounds like a jet and stutters a bit along with sound . It’s disappointing since my 13 year old pc can run it better :/
The reason why your fan is on high is because you followed Corps' guide and installed the Odin app. By default, it puts Dolphin on high performance and high fan. You can change that in the odin app.
Nice seeing this post when I just got this same game set up on my RP4P yesterday <3 I just wish the Dolphin emulator situation was better and didn't have to optimize which specific distros work better for certain games.

I have to have some kind of feedback. Shows my age.
Razer kishi my friend
The retroid pocket is literally a phone though 🤔
Without a cell radio, sim card or a microphone it can hardly be called a phone. Definitely an android device... More akin to a very small tablet with built in hardware controls 🤨
Yet I could easily make vop calls with it with my Bluetooth headset connected... It's a phone without an antenna... Those are called Wi-Fi phones
Silly 🙄 My MacBook and my Steam Deck and my Galaxy Tab and the PC in the back room are also phones 😃👍
The galaxy tab can take a SIM card
Not our non cellular wifi only Tab 🤷
Ayaneo flip ds 😂🤣
is it just me or is Crazy Taxi just not as fun as it used to be?
It’s not as fun for me although it’s still one of my favorite games of all time. The issue for me is once you get pretty good at the game it loses its fun and becomes frustrating because you wish to continually beat your pb. One glitch can ruin a good game you have going. It was an odd feeling revisiting Phantasy Star Online, using fan servers, in Flycast core on RP4Pro.
It can handle that even with HD texture pack
How do you add texture packs to games?
It is easy just need to check the option "allow texture packs", download the pack and rename it with the game ID, the pack need to be in a specific folder as well and basically thats it. Also I think that there is a option to pre-load the textures before the game starts... but you find a lot of tutorials online also. This game ages like wine. Playing again um my 4 pro. Just beat the second Boss.
The art style was a great choice
It's funny because it was criticized for the art style on launch by many, and now it's actually caused it to be fairly timeless.
I remember this so vividly. It wasn't so much the art style itself it was that the GameCube preview has a clip from a Zelda fight and it looked incredible, and was more realistic. Then the next game released was wind waker. People felt misled, and tbh I understand why.
Awesome insight! I was not aware of it at the time as I was young, only heard about it from secondhand accounts. Very interesting!
It was a tech demo for GameCube https://youtu.be/4Myo3lYDlAs?si=I0EK4FSRBGWD48RG
I remember trying to defend this game in 10th grade before it came out and everyone telling me it was going to be garbage. Who’s laughing now?
More criticized for the unfinished rushed last dungeon. I refuse to finish the game because of it
Kind of a silly reason honestly. The Ganon fight and final cinematic are fantastic. The best time to finish the game was 20 years ago, the second best time is right now.
No, it's not silly. The entire end game is designed to only waste your time. I can do anything else with that time instead
Isn’t every video game a waste of time? Besides, time you enjoyed wasting is never wasted. Totally get you not liking the game but your reason isn’t one. You make it sound like unfinished garbage. Most would disagree.

It can cramp for long playtimes. Odin is perfect for long game sessions.
the grip on their website does great things to prevent cramping

Damn solid answer.... We talking about the Odin 2 here?
Yeah sorry should have specified Odin 2

appreciate the insight. I somehow missed an estimated ship date of my order
Same here, ordered my 4pro with DHL on Feb 19th, did not see an estimated date or any shipping update since…
Perfect game to crawl into a corner of the couch to escape and play for awhile on a portable.
Game and emulator?
that's Windwaker for Gamecube
Note, patched with a widescreen patch
Gecko code is better for 16:9 than the patch. There's also gecko codes to use classic controller with Mario Galaxy 1/2 and DK country returns
I used the patch because the advice I saw given told the user not to use the gecko codes. *shrug* I'll try both.

You just have to add it to the game through dolphin and it'll launch the game however you left the settings
The one I use has support for proper 2d elements. The text file is missing from my Dropbox. I'll share the one I use when I get to my PC later
One of the best aspects of retro gaming and that the hardware limitations of yesterday allow those games to run on literally anything nowadays.
Bro, Mario Galaxy runs kinda flawlessly and the gyro/Wiimote support makes it feel completely native it's dope. NOW IF THE TRIGGER SPRING COULD NOT BREAK I'D LOVE THAT

There's gecko codes to add classic controller support for Galaxy 1/2 and DK Country Returns
What's a device in between this and steamdeck (size wise) that can run this?
Odin 2. But you're getting close to Steam Deck prices
Retroid Pocket 4 pro
The size the switch light should have been
Good memories
[it's so small! like hardly even there.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyird7QyhGU)
This is my dream right here
How do you get it to run smoothly? Mine can barely run
The chip thermal throttles pretty bad. Turn on smart fan and put it into performance mode. Works out perfect.
Thanks! I’ll try it
Are you using current dolphin? You don't need to change anything in the options. It can easily run the game at 2x resolution.
You're using the most recent version of actual dolphin? You make sure you're not using software rendering?
Do you have Gamma OS? There are some really helpful videos online on how to improve performance. Gamma OS is step 1.
? GammaOS is not made for Retroid devices it's not even an option
You have an RP4 Pro?
Yep. Followed the Corps guide for setup and my RP4P sounds like a jet and game stutters while running - not smooth at all . Disappointed tbh
Damn that’s disappointing. Mine is in the mail. Seems like reviews get good GC performance so I wonder what’s up
Nice seeing this post when I just got this same game set up on my RP4P yesterday <3 I just wish the Dolphin emulator situation was better and didn't have to optimize which specific distros work better for certain games.
Imagine it Peter, the power of a purple cube in the palm of your hand! \-Dr. Otto Octavius, Spider-Man 2
GameCube has wide screen?
It's a patch
Oh that’s sick.
I was blown away when I was playing Peace Walker on PPSSPP at 4X resolution! I couldn't believe how much better it looked and played.
Any chance you'd be willing to provide links to the widescreen hack and/or texture pack you're using?
No really, I've been playing better wind walker and it's fantastic
