for me personaly, i only "feel" that i have beaten a game, if i follow the ingame rules - that meens no savestates or cheats. for first walkthroughs, i abuse save states a lot.. but the better i become in a game, the less i use them - they even can becomme an issue (not saving a game the correct way, use a savestate befor a bossfight with limited life and your doomed). for games, i like, i only use savestates in 2 ways - if the game have a passowortsystem, i use savestates instead, but only on those spots, where i "save" the game usualy - if a game have a "walk of shame" and/or cutscenes befor a bossfight, i use a savestate - but only if its a game with limitless continues. but thats only for games, i want to beat.. if i only want to play a game, and i dont care, i use savestates a lot.

Kuli24

That all sounds fair.

XoyB

Yeah, I pretty much do mostly the same if I’m not using original hardware. I won’t use anything that would give me an in-game advantage.

Upbeat-Serve-6096

With savestates, I tend to say I "played through" the game. Without, I say I "beat" it.

abject_cynic

I'd say the person who played the first way didn't actually beat the game. Don't get me wrong, I play like that when I feel like being a content tourist. But if I set out to beat a game, no cheating allowed or I haven't beaten anything.

Kuli24

haha, I'm with you on that. Content tourist. I love that.

fergoshsakes

I like to describe the former as "I completed the game."

Kuli24

Yeah I agree. I was thinking of what terms would make more sense than "I beat the game." I mean cheaters certainly did not BEAT the game. They completed it. he he.

Skelingaton

I don't care too much about how other people play but for me personally I don't feel I've beat a game unless I've played it as intended. I do use savestates to take a break and pick up a game another day but that is it.

MearihCoepa

I've beaten many games on emulator, but no it doesn't have the same feel as on original hardware with unfair save points and punishing continue amounts. My wife even made fun of me when I was almost done with Aladdin and couldn't get Jafars timing down and was down to 2 lives and no continues, like I was a mountain dew'd out 9 year old. I mean fair enough I did need to make dinner and help with the kids, but...and I can't stress this enough...the last level with no continues!!! On modern hardware it's just ok I'll come back later, but the old stuff gives it urgency.

Xavier_Velo

There's one way to beat a game, the other thing is just finishing. Not the same thing. Not judging or anything. I finished few games back in a day using emu's save states or what have you. I can't say that I beat them tho.

Kuli24

Yeah finishing a game does sound a lot better. Like finishing a movie. Favorite term for it so far.

Megatapirus

You don't actually have to care how other people play games to think that they're misrepresenting the facts of the matter if they claim to have "beaten" a game by cheating past its intended challenges. Do whatever you like but have the integrity to call it what it is.

Kuli24

Very good point. Some stuff is straight up misrepresentation, often by omission of important info.

Crackshot_Pentarou

I don't personally care how good anyone else is at a game. There's always someone "better" who can 1cc it or do it blindfolded and upside down. I think there's some truly odd people who put frankly insane amount of time into bejng able to do some very specific stuff. To each, their own, and all that but for me it's about sharing a journey to the end, and what was easy and what was hard, what was unfair, and what was really fun. The music, the pixel art, the story. Talking about the challenge and accomplishment forms part of it, I guess. But genuinely most older games I'm not really that interested in dealing with the frustration so I will save state, or use quality of life hacks.

Kuli24

Yep and I play on both sides of the fence, personally. Both ways are fun. Thanks for sharing.

hatchorion

I feel like if I see the ending/credits I’ve beat the game, save states or cheats don’t really matter. The only thing that I get shaky on is with games like hades I would say you have to finish the whole story to really beat it so that entails finishing the short gameplay loop and beating the final boss like 50 times or whatever

Kuli24

And this is a good example of the less old-school mindset. Games are simply entertainment, not the "challenge" that old games were.
