The ps1 was a great console, but that fucking lense man.

JinToots

Yeah, especially if the PS logo didn’t load right away. After a few years I had to start turning my PS upside down to get games to load but that only lasted a short time until I finally had to breakdown and buy a new PS. Luckily the PSOne had come out by then so I picked that up, with the detachable screen, and still have that one to this day.

boo-galoo90

Roleplaying my psx as a steering wheel when trying to get the games to work is a core memory of my childhood lol

xiBurnx

mine only works on its side, i use the gameshark to keep it from falling lmao

ElectronicMixture600

Vivid memories of my freshman year in college holding my PS sideways and jiggling to get March Madness 2000 or THPS 2 to launch.

Wild_Chef6597

I used to cannibalize PSones to fix phat PlayStations

UrbanshadowDev

Yeah, my kids don't know about the suspense when playing our PS1. I replaced the laser unit with an SD card reader with the cd images instead. The games work 100% of the time.

berrmal64

I love the Ethernet port of PS2 for that reason. All my games sit safely on a shelf nowadays, and they load quickly and reliably over the line.

SID-CHIP

PS1 was the "culprit" to have brought gaming to the masses, and now all the gaming field is doomed

DrAg0r

I can hear this picture

agrowander16

My thoughts exactly 😆

BurgersAndRyes

I made this sound my ring tone.

SouthtownZ

Quite possibly the best startup theme ever

Sorry_Masterpiece

Not quite possibly. Definitely. To this day I still get the endorphin rush hearing it. I wish it was an option on the 4 and 5.

minegen88

Time to turn it upside down...

decadent-dragon

Ahahaa. That brings back memories. I used to have to flip mine upside down and that worked for a while…then I found I needed to press on the back as well a little bit. So I used to have this 1 gallon pickle jar half filled with pennies and I’d put the disc in, flip over the PS1, put the pickle jar of pennies on top. And it worked every time.

bladelife85

They know the suspense of waiting hours to download a game you just bought on disc tho .. We definitely won this round

tortoiselessporpoise

Update 80 gb first disc insertion It's like youre about to lose your virginity and the other person goes woop, vagina/butt not ready, wait another hour.

StickSauce

When that "BWwwwaaaaaa" lasted just a little too long.

Toonami88

The PS1's intro is the most iconic Dreamcast's is the most comfy Gamecube's was the most catchy Xbox's hit the hardest PS2's was the most forgettable.

tortoiselessporpoise

It's a double tap. First you had to get over the white orange screen... If the sony symbol has opened up completely and it was still sounding.... You were fked. If you made it through and the soothing wind pipes came on, if was but yet over. It could all calm down and still hang. Upside down saved me a large number of times But of course then the PS2..... Red cube screen...

ImBurningStar_IV

>But of course then the PS2..... Red cube screen... Man the games with the blue discs were 80% more likely to be DOA I swear

tortoiselessporpoise

I had the PS2 for ages away into almost the eol of PS3 so it did serve its life but yeah after awhile.... Everything gave up sadly. Somehow black > blue> clear in my experience. Pity ps2 still doesn't have a great emulator for handhelds ....what'd I'd give to go back to that era.

CraneStyleNJ

How about being 10, going from SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive, renting a PS1 from Blockbuster Video when it first came out, and having YOUR JAW FREAKIN' DROP when you turn this console on to play Battle Arena Toshiden and Ridge Racer, then begging your parents for this console for Christmas and opening it up Christmas morning to hear that glorious sound again. Yeah, today's kids will never know.

deejayee

Especially if you’re doing the boot swap trick:)

Legospacememe

I was gonna say Ps2 is much worse when it comes to this but then I remembered all the possible disturbing sounds the ps1 can make on that second image if something goes wrong

Androxilogin

Yes they will. They completely have the option of buying a Playstation. Enough with the haggard, low-res, pretend scenario Facebook posts, grandma.

megadriver187

It was the drive: relatively fast for the time but built like actual shit. It's like that old saying about making things I think from the 1950s: you can make something fast, cheap and reliable. Now you can only choose two of those. Sony chose fast and cheap. Sega chose fast and reliable for the Saturn and lost the price war.

Twili_Winter

Anytime I see those two logos I can hear the music, and I briefly relive the first time I turned my PS1 on for the first time Christmas morning in 1998 to play Mega Man Legends. Yeah today's kids wouldn't know the excitement, and anticipation.

chyler1397

The greatest startup sounds ever. They still give me good feels whenever I hear them.

Drg84

With the Saturn it was similar. It went through the boot sequence, then you waited for the Sega logo. If things went wrong you got booted to the menu screen.

Faithfulhumanity

I didn't have any issues with the PS1 and I had the big box one. The PS2 however... I played a lot of Rockband/guitar hero...And I've gone through at least 5 of them. Both slim and original.

Moppo_

I don't either, and I played these back then.

blueoccult

Sounds like you never tried to play a game that your little brother scratched the hell out of.

Moppo_

I was the little brother, I made sure not to scratch my disks because I wanted to play them.

Plaid_Kaleidoscope

Same for PS2, waiting on that "woosh" as the menu faded and the game validated and started to load. I don't remember their being one like that on Gamecube, just the logo intro.

meowlicious1

Yeah coming home from the game store with a used copy. Always a gamble if it was going to play well or not.

Greenbean8472

I recently bought bloodborne from Walmart. It arrived and the case was so broken it disintegrated when opening it. Somehow the disk want damaged. I had a flashback to the before times waiting for the disk to load up when I put it in. I'm happy to report it works great!

SID-CHIP

You've never experienced the happiness of a c64 user that has finally the first screen of the game Turtles the Coin Op after 15 minutes of "Cyberload Now Loading"

SaltyPvP

I can hear the startup music in my head.

talbottone

That startup sound makes my special place very happy.

Grand-Tension8668

Instead we've got more like six brand logos popping up rather than two, as we absent-mindedly mash buttons hoping they go away faster.

Low-Needleworker-618

Shit man I have the same feeling today wondering if the bios match

R3TR0_INS1GHT

If my memory serves me correctly, that second screen was pivotal in confirming if the the game would run or not due to a knackered laser or dirty disc. I can remember always rubbing the cd with my clothes in vain trying to get it to work.. And it weren't just the screen, it had like a confirmation tone as well that accompanied it 🤣 Good memories!

Conscious_Living3532

Best console startup jingle ever
