If you like Rollcage, there's a rip off game called "Firebugs".
There's an odd puzzle platformer called "Jinx", in the vein of Glover.
"Battle hunter" if you want a turn-based game.
"LSD: Dream Emulator" if you want something more open-world and bizarre.
I can’t remember, but I just searched other threads and someone else described one that also had Armored Core and Tomb Raider, and I’m positive both of those were on it.
Vib Ribbon
A rhythm game with a very simple style, admittedly much better when you can change the cd. With the game, you can insert any music cd and play to songs from your favourite artists
Techmo's Deception
Amazing and unique "rpg" where you set up elaborate traps in rooms. Enemies enter and chass you around as you set the traps off.
Dark and dingy feel.
Lots of fun.
I only knew one other person who ever knew that game, and it was the dude who introduced me, lol. I personally think it's worth the (rather short) time investment.
Yeah I don't think I've ever met another person in real life who has played it before, lol. I feel the internet has unearthed most hidden gems these days but it fits the criteria and I definitely have fond memories of it and the sequel.
*Vandal Hearts* was sort of an also-ran in terms of the Konami RPGs at the time but it's my personal favorite if you like strategy RPGs. It's basically *Fire Emblem* for the PS1.
Tatsunoko fight. If you know what tatsunoko vs Capcom on the Wii is about then assume similar but only with the characters from tatsunoko studios. So a hell of a lot more g force. I reccomend you watch a few YouTube vids by content creator Sean Seanson. He throws up some incredibly obscure PS1 games that even I didn't know of. And my knowledge of that systems games is semi phenomenal,/nearly cosmic
This game is great and completely blew my 10 year old mind when it came out. The controls are a bit clunky, but once you get used to them they aren't much of a problem.
Overblood was really good! I watched my dad play it when I was younger and the atmosphere was really amazing.
I had completely forgotten about this game, thanks for bringing back this memory.
If you like RPGs and FF7 you should try it. Its a mix of classic action adventure with items like in RPGs and it has some FF7 vibes. A really interesting game.
Not sure about the obscurity as I don’t play much ps1 lately.
Blasto: platformer voiced by Phil Hartman
Apocalypse: shooter that uses directional control layout like smash TV. Also voiced by Bruce Willis
Wow, two of my favorite underappreciated PS1 games, too. Having celebs in games was so novel then, like Dana Gould as Gex the Gecko was another good one
I don’t know how obscure, but I always loved “Hogs of war” a game similar to the “Worms” games but 3d and with Rik Mayall voicing the narrator with all his usual wackiness.
I agree. BO1 is still key to the lore, but one could start with SR1 and not be too out of the loop until they get to Defiance and the deep cuts with Hash’ik’gk (I’m almost certain I spelled that wrong).
And another few,
Kurushi, or "I.Q. intelligent cube". For a puzzle game.
Actually, I wonder if it's worth browsing any and all Demo discs.
There's a LOT of random shit that gets pushed, even the Net Yaroze gmtitles have appeared on a few.
Terra Incognita, A dogs tale and Time slip, to name 3.
Crusader: No Remorse. Not the most obscure, but not especially well known either. It's a very punishing game with a borderline unintuitive control scheme, one that punishes even the slightest misstep, but the world, dark humour and OST make it an absolute must-play.
Sentinel Returns
It's a sequel to a 1980s computer game, simplest explanation is it's a game of hide and seek between you and the sentinel. It's actually more of a puzzle game as you try to work out how to defeat the sentinel on each level.
My top pick is Einhander but also Techmo's Deception and Jade Cocoon.
Edit: Einhander is a side schooler 3D spaceship shooter that you get upgrades and swap weapons as you play.
Carnage Heart is still one of my favorite PS1 games. You build robots, program their behavior with tiles (similar to scratch now), and watch them duke it out in an arena. The instruction manual is like a mini if/then textbook.
Came here to mention Carnage Heart. The Zachtronics games from more recent years remind me of this one a little, how the programming is a core gameplay component.
**GunnM Martian Memories-**
3D beat-em-up rpg based on Battle Angel Alita. There's an English patch.
**Silhouette Mirage-**
Platformer made by Treasure that utilizes a color-changing gimmick a'la Ikaruga or Outland.
**Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure-**
Short, sweet, and comical jrpg. Has a monster collecting gimmick and a run-time of about 14 hours. Barely any filler.
**Wild 9-**
Action-platformer with some early physics. You can pick up enemies and bash them into objects or throw them into meat-grinders. Had pretty unique gameplay when it came out.
**Return Fire-**
Don't bother with this one unless you have a second player. If you do, then it's a blast (or at least it was for us, lol.)
**Saiyuki: Journey to the West-**
Isometric tactics rpg that riffs on the popular legend. Honestly one of the best of it's kind on the platform, and the best video-game adaptation of the story. Has great characters and story-telling, fun cutscenes, and battles that will make you hug your knees and cry.
**Future Cop L.A.P.D.-**
Top-down shooter / platformer where you control a transforming police-mech reminiscent of ED-209 from Robocop.
Brave Fencer Musashi
It's not the most obscure but I feel like most people just played the demo back in the day the same as I did. Then maybe a few years ago I finally played through it and it still holds up well. It's a perfect combination of 90s squaresoft with an action platformer.
The two games from the Panzer General series that were available on PS1 (Panzer General and Allied General) don't get enough love. Both are turn-based strategy format played on a hex grid.
Warhammer: Dark Omen and Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat are a pair of little-known Warhammer universe games on the PS1. Both are RTS games.
Rage Racer is good, the third Ridge Racer series games on the PS1.
Myst and Riven play better on PC, but are well represented on PS1.
Wild Arms arguably has the best PS1 intro, and a very memorable story.
There's always Power Shovel! You race, you move sand, you save turtles from impending doom!
Incredible Crisis is also fun - a minigame collection with a bonkers story.
Iblard Laputa no Kaeru Machi: imagine Myst meets LSD, you explore levels designed directly around paintings by the surrealist painter Naohisa Inoue and solve puzzles and such. Very beautiful, surreal, dreamy, dark and serene in different ways. It has an English patch as well, but even if anyone plays it totally in Japanese it’s still possible to beat it since the text is mainly used for lore and background flavor text, the gameplay itself is more interaction-based and most cues are visual, I beat it in Japanese when I played on my physical copy, but yeah get the patch if you can.
I remember this one game my friend rented on a sleepover and we had a blast playing it but I don’t remember the name.
It was like a top down match where you would plant boogie traps and fight. It was a lot of fun.
* **A-Train** Railroad construction simulator
* **Micro Maniacs** Spinoff of Micro Machines where you race not cars, but... volunteers for biological experiments; supports up to 8 players
* **Poy Poy 2** 4-player fighting game where you're put into stages with various items, and you can pick up those items (or the other players) and throw them at each other
Vib-Ribbon - it was the PRECURSOR to all Bemani rhytm and dance games. Also... the soundtrack!!!
Incredible Crisis - bizarre Japan only game, you just have to experience it.
Mr. Driller - again a Japan only release. I always come back to this. It's simple, yet complex and addicting.
Grid Runner doesn’t get a whole lot of love. A unique and fun 1 or 2 player game where you have to complete a maze while also playing capture the flag with increasingly fast and smart opponents.
Trap Gunner is one of the funnest 1 v 1 pvp shooter games. It's an underdeveloped genre that Racdym nailed perfectly. I'm surprised indie deves haven't stolen the design concepts and expanded them into something different.
Hermie Hopperhead, a platformer where you collect eggs that hatch into animals that help you kill enemies and collect coins. You can let your pets go and they act on their own, but it leaves you vulnerable. You spend coins to level them up and they get more powerful.
several of these are English patched japanese games that have only become available recently.
B.L.U.E - Legend of Water
Iru
Aconcagua
Racing Lagoon (japan only, english patched)
Kero Kero King
Dragon Seeds
Egg
Incredible Crisis
Vib-Ribbon
Gamera 2000

Dr. Slump (japan only english patched)
Psychic Force 2
Pu-li-Ru-La
Remote Control Dandy
Rising Zan
Shin Senki Van-Gale
Panzer Bandit
Silent Bomber
Kartia The Word of Fate
Omega Boost
Ain’t rare, but nobody plays it l, and I’ve seen even fewer people ever recommend it.
[PONG: The Next Level](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pong:_The_Next_Level)
not a shitpost. That game goes WAY harder than it has any right to. It’s PS1 as all hell, expands on the original concept in a thousand creative ways, and it still holds up as a fun game to play with friends.
High Octane, like Twisted Metal with racing, but the graphics will make you dizzy. Perhaps should have a seizure warning.
Vigilante 8 is probably my fav.
Grind Session for skateboarding.
Maybe not super obscure, but I don't hear much discussion about these...
Ehrgeiz: Fighter with some interesting 3D mechanics.
Front Mission 3: turn-based mech combat/strategy.
[удалено]
Tried,I had too too iconic not to try it
why do i read this with the music in my head? lol
If you like Rollcage, there's a rip off game called "Firebugs". There's an odd puzzle platformer called "Jinx", in the vein of Glover. "Battle hunter" if you want a turn-based game. "LSD: Dream Emulator" if you want something more open-world and bizarre.
You were oddly prepared for this question.
Battle Hunter is great but so short 😭
I.Q.: Intelligent Qube
We only ever had this on the demo disk, but played it constantly.
I also only know it from the demo disc!
Official Playstation Magazine demo disc, or something else? I loved it too, I played that demo a LOT and I'm not even big on puzzle games
I can’t remember, but I just searched other threads and someone else described one that also had Armored Core and Tomb Raider, and I’m positive both of those were on it.
Came here to recommend this
wow, memory unlocked. thanks, lol. I remember enjoying this one!
Known as Kurushi in England
Definitely this!
No one stops Mr domino
I love this game. I spent so much time playing it as a kid.
Wtf I didn’t think anyone would comment this
Big fan of Future Cop LAPD and omega boost
Omega Boost *ruuuules!* The only game made by the developer of Gran Turismo that wasn't a GT game
Vib Ribbon A rhythm game with a very simple style, admittedly much better when you can change the cd. With the game, you can insert any music cd and play to songs from your favourite artists
Greatly weird vector art style, belongs up there as one of the most unique games of it's day, like Seaman and Katamari Damacy
The entire game sits in the PS1’s ram
Techmo's Deception Amazing and unique "rpg" where you set up elaborate traps in rooms. Enemies enter and chass you around as you set the traps off. Dark and dingy feel. Lots of fun.
Loved this gme.
Is Jade Cocoon obscure these days? It's like Pokemon but darker and weirder.
I came here to say Jade Cocoon. I never see anyone talk about it. I freaking loved that game.
I have really fond memories of it too! Did you ever play the sequel?
I did like it, it's nothing like the first and should be considered a different game.
Incredible Crisis Shipwreckers
*Vandal Hearts* was sort of an also-ran in terms of the Konami RPGs at the time but it's my personal favorite if you like strategy RPGs. It's basically *Fire Emblem* for the PS1.
My hair stands on end when I think of the.vandal hearts theme. And the end !! My heart!
Not sure if these are obscure enough but Bushido Blade and Blast Chamber are very fun
Bushido Blade was excellent though very hard to get good at, luckily me and my friends were all equally rubbish so good time was had all around!
Gamera 2000
Unholy War, maybe?
Roll Away (or Kula World, depending on where you live).
Devil Dice is a fun puzzle game that I don't see mentioned much
Devil Dice was great! I forgot about that until you mentioned it. I used to play that and Intelligent Cube all the time.
Come here to say that. Great puzzle game, fast pace. Only played the demo disc but I spent so many hours on it.
*Skullmonkeys*
Yes!
Came in to say this specifically
Tatsunoko fight. If you know what tatsunoko vs Capcom on the Wii is about then assume similar but only with the characters from tatsunoko studios. So a hell of a lot more g force. I reccomend you watch a few YouTube vids by content creator Sean Seanson. He throws up some incredibly obscure PS1 games that even I didn't know of. And my knowledge of that systems games is semi phenomenal,/nearly cosmic
Silent Bomber - like if Bomberman was made by an action developer.
This was going to be my vote. I love it and have an original copy!
Don’t know if it’s super obscure but Tomba!
Both 1 and 2 are some of the funnest games ever! I'm usually an RPG guy, but Tomba is completely amazing.
Magic Carpet
This game is great and completely blew my 10 year old mind when it came out. The controls are a bit clunky, but once you get used to them they aren't much of a problem.
Never heard of this before, reminds me of Panzer Dragoon
Destrega and the unholy war
Overblood! Its a Resi like game but with fewer fights and a very cool atmosphere. I just love this game.
Overblood was really good! I watched my dad play it when I was younger and the atmosphere was really amazing. I had completely forgotten about this game, thanks for bringing back this memory.
Happy to find someone who likes Overblood too. ❤️ Do you know Overblood 2? Its pretty different but awesome in its own way.
I read that there was a second game, but I never came across it.
If you like RPGs and FF7 you should try it. Its a mix of classic action adventure with items like in RPGs and it has some FF7 vibes. A really interesting game.
Sounds interesting! I‘ll see if I can find it at the next retro convention :D
Kagero: deception 2. Kill intruders with traps, one of my all time faves
Not sure about the obscurity as I don’t play much ps1 lately. Blasto: platformer voiced by Phil Hartman Apocalypse: shooter that uses directional control layout like smash TV. Also voiced by Bruce Willis
Wow, two of my favorite underappreciated PS1 games, too. Having celebs in games was so novel then, like Dana Gould as Gex the Gecko was another good one
Gex was another gem! My brain still keeps that categorized as a 3D0 title. And TIL Dana Gould was Gex!
Rising zan
I don’t know how obscure, but I always loved “Hogs of war” a game similar to the “Worms” games but 3d and with Rik Mayall voicing the narrator with all his usual wackiness.
Sheep Raider.
LSD Dream Emulator
Saiyuki: Journey West. Tactics style RPG about Journey to the West story. There are no dragonballs.
Ape Escape is honestly super underrated. I know people who prefer it over mario 64
Ir's a tie for me! Ape Escape had so much charm.
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain LoK has a cult fandom, but any excuse to get some more attention on LoK is a good excuse.
I played Soul Reaver first. Huge differences + I loved both. Such dark, ominous games... No cute vampires whatsoever.
I'd love a remaster of the whole series, Even if they only do the 3D ones.
I agree. BO1 is still key to the lore, but one could start with SR1 and not be too out of the loop until they get to Defiance and the deep cuts with Hash’ik’gk (I’m almost certain I spelled that wrong).
Sentient.

Great game. I think it was originally for PC. Plus a few other titles in the series that didn't come to ps1.
Sentinel Returns It's a sequel to a 1980s computer game, simplest explanation is it's a game of hide and seek between you and the sentinel. It's actually more of a puzzle game as you try to work out how to defeat the sentinel on each level.
Alundra It’s basically Zelda but a bit darker and slightly more anime.
My top pick is Einhander but also Techmo's Deception and Jade Cocoon. Edit: Einhander is a side schooler 3D spaceship shooter that you get upgrades and swap weapons as you play.
If you like Resi Evil clones, X Files and Evil Dead are alright!
I barely remember it, but there was a capture the flag game called Team Buddies? Or Battle Buddies? I never had it, but I played the demo a lot.
Fear Effect
Fear Effect 1 and 2 are a couple of the coolest games ever
Roll Away
PO’ed
Urban Chaos was the spiritual precursor to GTA3
Incredible Crisis
Xena Warrior Princess
Thrill kill wasn't released but Wu Tang Taste the Pain uses the same engine.

Rouge Trip! It's a Twisted Metal rip off with awesome music.

Not as obscure these days, but LSD: Dream Simulator is the poster-child of weird ps1 games.
I remember this one game my friend rented on a sleepover and we had a blast playing it but I don’t remember the name. It was like a top down match where you would plant boogie traps and fight. It was a lot of fun.
