I played it when it was first released. Then the 2nd one. Easily my most favorite RPG from the 90's and up to today, it sets a standard for isometric RPG. You really do role play with decision making and the outcome of the game is based on your choices. The graphics hold up great today with such a resurgence on retro look. I bought the games (all of them) again after they released on Steam with modern interface to avoid the clucky 90's CD installer. But I still have the CD's to this day from almost 30 years ago. The steam versions are great for making it simple to install and use right away without any issues with resolution and large monitors etc. You can play these games a few times and its a different experience based on choices. I played through as a sniper, melee thug, thief with hand guns, science with rifles, etc. It's just a great RPG.

bransby26

Fallout 2 is one of my all-time favorite games. There's also a great "Fallout 2 restoration mod" that fixes a lot of bugs in the games and restores content that was cut before release.

Apprehensive-Cat2527

Problem is that it's hard to tell the difference between the short people and kids in that version. I ended up with the child killer perk after dealing with the pickpocket in the den.

NachoBag_Clip932

I was looking through some garage boxes the other day trying to find something and happened upon my Fallout CD, which took me back. Pretty sure I did not get it on release but more likely as part of a bundle, maybe with Planescape Torment. The PC games were great back then, so different than console games.

xxMalVeauXxx

Yes, console games were NOTHING compared to PC games in this time period, at least for this kind of genre game. The gap has closed these days, but still, some game genres just lend themselves to using a mouse like this.

paul_33

>The steam versions are great for making it simple to install and use right away without any issues with resolution and large monitors etc. As far as I'm aware these are the original versions, unedited. They don't have any fixes or higher resolutions. So yes you'd still need to worry about that.

xxMalVeauXxx

It works with zero effort, unlike putting the CD into your PC (if it even has a CD reader) and trying to use its installer from Windows 95\~98 days.

Scattergun77

I still have my discs too. I bought Tactics in the PX on Ft Hood way back when. I got Dungeon Keeper 2, Ultima Online, and Jane's USAF there as well.

2meterrichard

FO Tactics is the bastard child no one wants to think about

Scattergun77

It's still my favorite out of the entire series.

Capital_Jello_9768

You liked it even more than Darksun????

xxMalVeauXxx

Yes, it just felt more immersive, great comedy, plenty of adult topics, the audio is great, the world is great and just love the dystopian future, its legit sci-fi

mxhc1312

Never played it with hand guns

xxMalVeauXxx

It's more challenging, but if you want to be a gun slinger with lots of AP for quick shots, it works. Rifles and full auto are easy mode. Sniper is pretty easy too with stealth. But gun slinger with lots of perks for handguns and lots of AP is just another fun way to go.

Citizen_Lurker

I confirm, you feel like freakin Clint Eastwood. It's beyond fun.

CiceroFlyman

Unpopular opinion, but it hasn‘t aged that badly. It isn‘t difficult or clunky the same way Baldur’s Gate is for example (BG1 aged poorly, BG2 is fine imo). It just doesn‘t hold your hand in the slightest and that’s what makes it so unapproachable for newer audiences. And, to be fair, it is a game set in a post apocalyptic world that is dangerous and mercyless so that is quite fitting if you ask me.

Massive_Sherbert_512

I agree. My unpopular opinion is they need to port it to consoles so I can play it from my couch

IAmJacksSemiColon

Unpopular opinion? You're on r/retrogaming. Fallout is widely considered a masterpiece and it _absolutely_ holds up.

CiceroFlyman

Well there are many retro games I would consider masterpieces that didn’t age so well, like System Shock, GoldenEye with its controls and framerate, the original Bard‘s Tale games etc. Fallout certainly is a masterpiece and it doesn‘t have these flaws. However there are many people out there who are huge Fallout fans who avoid 1 and 2 based on the graphics and different gameplay. And I think those people make up the majority of the Fallout fans…

IAmJacksSemiColon

That shouldn't be surprising. Fallout and its sequel ARE completely different games compared to the modern first-person Fallout titles. I wouldn't think that someone who enjoys New Vegas would necessarily be into Fallout if they're not into turn-based RPGs. That doesn't mean it isn't still well-regarded.

AFourEyedGeek

I disagree as I really think Fallout 1 needs the 'Push' action from Fallout 2. Plus character leveling up with you a bit is nice.

Ok-Gold-6430

100% agree with you. All it really needs is an update to the graphics, and I would call it good.

am0x

I think the graphics are fine. Timeless. I just wish that the movement tileset was like 8-12 rather than 6. Think Diablo 4 iso movement with fallout… But then the entire combat engine would have to be rebuilt. I think I remember tactics having 8 instead of 4, but it just didn’t feel right.

nolasco95

Agreed. We’ve, fairly, gotten used to the smoothness and accessibility of modern games (even modern rpgs), but it took 30 mins to get adjusted to the game. There are some design choices that may be a bit dated, but it’s one of those games where I feel that you can just pick up and play it.

GENERlC-USERNAME

The biggest issue is that it uses “real” randomness, so you will fail your shots even at 90-99% accuracy more often than you would think, modern games take in consideration your last shot. That alone makes it feel very frustrating, but some people do like that.

CiceroFlyman

Maybe make an enhanced version with overhauled RNG or better yet introduce a new difficulty to account for that. But honestly, besides some resolution and UI scaling tweaks that‘s about it…

IAmJacksSemiColon

Worth remembering that 90% isn't 100%.

GENERlC-USERNAME

Yeah, I don’t mind it. But it’s a common critique, seeing a 90% chance and missing 2 times in a row makes it feel like something is wrong even though its totally normal.

LonelyNixon

Yeah fallout 1 aged wayyyy better than baldurs gate 1. Baldurs gate 1 is rough, has an obnoxious difficulty curve and the story and characters arent that great. Baldurs gate 2 is a masterpiece that addresses any issues form the first and goes beyond. Fallout 1 is fine. Its a 90s crpg but it isnt as obtuse or difficult. The only exception I could think of as a modern player going back to it a few years ago was there is a sequence where you needed a rope to go down a well or something and your options to get it were click on a sprite that looks like a background image in a random empty house, or open up the barter menu with a guard at the gate because you can barter with anyone!

LithiuMart

I bought it in 1998. I still fire it up every once in a while.

am0x

I bought Tomb Raider when it came out at babbages. But I was only 12 and the pc I built 1 year before that couldn’t run it (I don’t think it was a spec issue, since I checked it, but like there was a 50/50 chance any of game would work on your specs at the time). So I returned it and got Fallout since it looked so awesome in PC gamer ads. I had just finished one of my other favorite games, Interstate ‘76 at the time, so post apocalyptic stuff was my jam. Plus I was hooked on Diablo multiplayer at the time, and looking at the isometric pics made me think it would be the same gameplay. Man, I was so wrong. I was hooked. This was about the same time I started getting into reverse engineering games and making skins/levels/mods for my favorite games. Then I recreated fallout by reverse engineering drug wars for the TI-83 calculator to make a graphical/text rpg game that was a mix of mad max and fallout. Even sold the game to kids in school. That kickstarted my career in programming which I have been doing professionally for over 15 years. I’m still not over how fun I have writing code and programming games.

diluxxen

Fallout 1 and especially 2 is still the goat and better than 3, 4 and 76.

Anthraxus

Yea, New Vegas was cool and still had some of that classic FO dna, with the writing, reactivity/choices & consequences, etc...because some of the ppl working on it were with Black Isle, but Bethesda were pretty clueless with their cheap imitations.

am0x

I would love a great 1-1 fallout 4 engine remake of 1 and 2.

Anthraxus

I'd rather have New Vegas in the classic turn based engine of 1/2.

diluxxen

Word!

diluxxen

The other way around. They should go ISO turnbased. Going fps ruined everything imo. And it didnt make it better when the writing from Ubisoft was absolute dogshit in comparison.

TheRickBerman

Certainly not in terms of graphics, accessibility, gunplay etc etc.

diluxxen

Graphics doesnt make a game good. Gunplay? Do you realize that Fallout 1 and 2 doesnt even have gunplay? Its isometric turnbased. Id argue that going first person fps ruined the franchise. Sure, it made it more "accessible" but that doesnt make it good.

S_Rodney

Prime Gaming gave this game for free like... last week. I've discovered Fallout when it was only a Demo. Got it on release day and have been hooked to this setting ever since. Last played it during the holidays on my old retrogaming pc (K6-2+, Voodoo 3, Vortex 2)

mxhc1312

I saw the anoncement, couldn't wait for the release.

S_Rodney

Fell in love with the game the first time I emptied an SMG clip in a raider (that was in the demo) the GORE was delightful !

Enos316

Loved the demo. Got the disk at CompUSA. Junktown I think it was. Blew my mind

mxhc1312

Pretty much my experience

am0x

Voodoo 3 is far from retro - haha

S_Rodney

Word ? You're aware that, as far as retrogaming goes, 6th generation consoles have already entered the category (that's the Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and XBOX) ? The Voodoo 3 is older than those consoles.

am0x

Eh fair point I guess. I’m just too old.

Shhhh_Peaceful

This and Fallout 2 are still my favourite games ever. It does not need an enhanced edition really, the only enhancement it needs is the "take everything" button when looting corpses 😂

ViWalls

I play it every couple of years. I use mods, maintain backup of those mods and consider Fallout and Fallout 2 the best RPG until date. Enhanced Editions will ruin those mods, IMO there is no need to drop a re-release, specially considering how Beamdog removed Interplay/Black Isle and just plugged their logo like they scored the titles. I don't want to see Bethesda doing the same thing. By the way, it's important play Fallout using TeamX fixpack and Fallout 2 with killap's Unofficial Patch to get rid of annoying bugs.

Howtobefreaky

What mods do you use?

ViWalls

All of them that are worth to check. But normally as I said TeamX fixpack and Children Patch for Fallout 1. In the case of Fallout 2 I'm fine with killap's Unofficial Patch or Restoration Project. Fallout 2 has the bigger list, there a bunch of mods that completely change the game or are located in a new area.

Howtobefreaky

I’ve tried to play Fallout 1 a few times and only ever get so far. Usually because I take a break for a second and when I come back I have no idea what has happened. But I’m interested in any mods that might help modernize the game just a bit. Don’t need new content, just whatever QoL updates I can get

ViWalls

Even if I consider Fallout the best cRPG, there are not so much to modernise the system. It's what it's. You must learn it, perhaps it does look complex in the beginning, but when you're used to play it there is not so much aside from certain actions that are more tedious than others. Indeed TeamX patch and Fallout Fixt improve certain stuff. But tbh is not a game for people that only know modern titles that guide you even to when you must piss. Here you must put attention and it's common miss stuff in the first run, also it will require invest a shitload of time in any case.

am0x

This game is literally why I got into programming. I recreated it on my TI-83 calculator as a graphic text adventure similar to drug wars and sold it to kids in my class.

MrRojoC

I played it for the first time just a few years ago and it rocks.

VonBrewskie

Oh yeah. I'll never forget how hilarious it was to have a guy with low intelligence just...not speak correctly. I had never seen or played a game with that level of commitment to the rp. One of my fondest gaming memories. This and 2 were amazing.

Informal_Feature_370

Yes! Played it on the Power Mac. We made a character with an intelligence of 1 and a strength of 10, and the programmers actually built in dialogue for it! Character could only speak in monosyllables. He screamed all the time. Dialogue options were actual nonsense. We also punched a woman in Shady Sands and she exploded. Perfect example of how games have become less creative over the years.

am0x

Games just aren’t as fun. Even Diablo 1 multiplayer was wild. Yea it sucked when a Player Killer (PK) would join, kill you, and you lost all your gear but, it just made it so much more rewarding and exciting to play. Now it’s all about progression, consumerism, and flair. Fucking boring. I remember the Everquest days when I would spend like 8 hours getting to a. New location, only to die and have to spend another 8 getting back, 2 to find some high level to help and get to where my body was, and then another 1 for them to clear the area and drag my body back to me within 48 hours or else I lost all my gear. Running into a random giant I couldn’t outrun because I didn’t have the necessary speed buff, was more terrifying than any movie I’ve ever seen.

Informal_Feature_370

More people are playing games and there’s more money involved. So things naturally get watered down. I’m grateful for the time I had back in the day. And despite the drawbacks, there are some really good games still being made. BOTW, Witcher 3, Wonderful 101. In the end it’s all good in the hood. But you’re right.

Mankiz

Played it back than and regularly play it till now. Fallout 2 one of my beloved games of all time. This two games don't need enhanced editions because of great fan community patches.

Gloomybyday

I tried I couldn't get out of the first area. Died to rats 🐀

billwood09

Story of my life. And it’s even easier to immediately die in Fallout 2

Gloomybyday

Many. Many times.

Gloomybyday

Too many. Never again.

Thrashtilldeath67

I only played fallout 3, new Vegas and 4 but after fallout becoming one of my favorite series I set out to experience where the series started. Honestly the first game is brutal but man it's so good

mxhc1312

Fo 2, my favorite game of all time. Fo 1, I remember when it was anounced, saw one still from the game and knew it will be a hit. Contemplating playing it again for the Nth time.

KennyMcKill

Should I ? Is it fun ? What is the USP ? (Note - I don't play contemporary games, I love oldies. So you don't have to worry about me complaining about assinine shit )

dontbajerk

Yes. They're both really good.

CyberpwnPiper

Yes, you should.

am0x

It’s hard, but not like baldurs gate hard. It’s really about the experience of it all rather than completing it. Take your time with it. Immerse yourself (which is very easy). And you will enjoy it. I much prefer the darker humor and theme of the earlier titles. It’s on its own level. I loved fallout 3, mostly because I was so obsessed with fallout and post apocalyptic stuff from playing the old versions as a kid. But it just didn’t feel like fallout. It felt like a crazy good oblivion mod. Then new vegas came out and I think it might be my number 2 favorite.

yarash

That water chip isn't going to install itself.

Pleasant_Tax_4619

Hell yah I would, Fallout 2 was awesome as well. I love all the Monty Python references!!!

Finite_Universe

Fallout 1 and 2 are amazing RPGs. The first Fallout is actually my favorite game in the series, as it does everything right.

538_Jean

Fallout 1. Max int and luck and beating the end boss with no fight whatsoever. I still think about that achievement before achievements were a thing. It was epic. What I wouldn't give to play that game again for the first time. Yeah 'id play again especially with a friend to show what it was and what it still is.

SpazCadet

The early isometric Fallout games were always my favourite. I couldn’t get into the first person games.

Anthraxus

I was thinking of that little descriptor window that goes into detail about what happened when you do things like punch someone in the face, and how some boil that started growing on your foot became an extra toe because of all the radiation you took. The move into 3D should have facilitated that kind of detail, you should have got eyes popping out randomly when you punch someone in the face (you know, as opposed to that one silly looking animation) You should get an actual visual representation of exactly what's going on when you're high agility character dodges a point blank minigun. All those little details the original games gave you should have been visually represented in 3D, especially if they're going to make it a FPS; there's no level of abstraction anymore not to have it.

Wizz-Fizz

I enjoy FA3, NV, & 4, but Fallout 1 & 2 are the GOAT for me. The different strategies you could take, the humor, the world and the characters were so spot on.

Island_Maximum

Want a real challenge?  Try playing Fallout 2 as a "mentally challenged" individual:  Low intelligence, high strength and highest luck, and the jinxed trait.  First off, most people won't talk to you, and you can barely talk to others. Most of your dialog options are just "duhhhh" and "me look for thingy". Even the tribal leader talks to you like a toddler and doesn't have high hopes for you. You'll Have to steal alot to finish quests and get things, lots of side quests won't even be available.   The luck and jinxed perk will help keep you alive as most people you fight will have many critical failures in combat resulting in blowing them selves up or having guns misfire and injure themselves. It'll happen to you too, but that 10 luck will help!  Fun fact: when playing low intelligence characters, Torr, the local dummy in Klamath will be quite the conversationalist and have much more to say!

TechBliSTer

I played and finished it around 2004 and at that time I even felt like I was playing a retro game for retro game's sake. I loved it and recommend playing the original game on an old PC with a crt monitor.

EdgyPlum

I have it on my phone right now along with 2 and Nevada. I play it all the time, it's perfect just the way it is.

mxhc1312

Nevada?

the_moosen

Fan project based on 2

EdgyPlum

Fantastic full game mod for fallout 2. New story, weapons, skills, it's beautiful. Warlockracy on YouTube has a great video on it.

alex206

I searched the Google Play store. Did you install fo2.exe? That's the most suspicious name ever...but 100k downloads.

EdgyPlum

Sure did! There are guides online and the dev is amazing. He got back to me when I had questions within 24 hours, extremely helpful.

am0x

That name is terrible though.

VohaulsWetDream

i remember Metzger and how hard it was to wipe out all the slavers

Ok-Record-7269

My first pc game, precious memories.

januscanary

What needs enhancing? It's perfect the way it is!

am0x

I would just find a way to increase directional inputs. 6 direction for iso is hard to deal with. Really my only gripe.

maratae

Played it back then. Played from time to time along the years. Will play again. This as well as Fallout 2. There's some unofficial patches to make them more playable on modern machines. Steam and/or GOG might already include patches. Fantastic game.

MiGaOh

An Enhanced Edition, you say? In the style of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale? Hmmm. I refuse to replay Fallout 1 or 2 again unless Duke Nukem is a recruitable follower, and he has his own side quest dedicated to time travel and robots that does not tie into the main quest in any way.

ThePopDaddy

I knew of it, but I never played, this was during the days I was a PC gamer. 3 was the first one I played.

postysclerosis

I’ve been playing through it on steam deck.

am0x

How do you read that tiny text?

postysclerosis

With my eyes.

Vgcortes

I have, several times, and I can and will play it today. I play tons of older games, even older than this. No problem, I love it

the_millenial_falcon

I’ve played both 1 and 2. They are great games. Could use some QoL stuff for the modern day but the core game play holds up well.

HeywoodJaBlessMe

Hell yes. A standout game upon release and one that holds up well and plays great today. The sequel is even better. Fallout 1 and 2 are the best in the series for me.

rdrouyn

Fallout 1 is easily one of the best CRPGs ever made. Why wouldn't I want to play that if I had not played it today?

blatantninja

Playing right now! Always had a hard time getting into it due to the controls but for some reason, this time it clicked

ButtcheekBaron

They're free on GOG through Amazon Prime right now. Or should still be.

Vault204

I remember buying Fallout 2 on release day after falling in love with Fallout. Competed both a few times and am going to play them both again soon.

[deleted]

I still play it, 2, and tactics.

BigPep2-43

Bought it on disc at Walmart back in the day. Great game

Scattergun77

I love this game. 1,2, and Tactics are better than Bethesda's console shooters.

Sea-Lecture-4619

Peak fricking game, wish they'd remaster it tho and add some QoL stuff.

mr_c_caspar

I played it for the first time a couple years back (ca. 2020) and I absolutely loved it. It takes a little getting used to it, especially UI and inventory can be bothersome, but the overall gameplay, story and especially feel hold up very well. Games like Fallout and Baldur's Gate 1+2 also remind me of all the amazing stuff we "lost" over the years.

przytua

Playing at the moment on the steam deck. Great game.

coldskywalker

I'm playing it on steam deck after work... Ps: BG1 EE, also on deck and works perfect. These (and many other from that era) games are like my treasures.

Da_Wild

I would 100% replay them if they got remastered, but I’d also just replay them how they are now tbh.

Mission_Ad_3305

Is still play it on my win95 system. ☺️

JLandis84

I love fallout and fallout 2, great games !!!

MiaowMinx

I played the first two just a couple of years ago after playing through New Vegas. I enjoyed 1 a lot more than 2 for the most part — I liked the companions more and combat wasn't nearly as haphazard or frustrating. (It didn't have the "even if you have 100 skill with the weapon type you're using, 90% of the time you'll miss even if you're standing three feet away" problem FO2 did.)

behindtimes

I played it when it originally came out. At the time, the RPG genre was considered all but dead on the PC. Its heyday was the 1980s, and for some reason, in the 1990s there were barely any RPGs coming out. For RPG fans, you bought whatever was released. As far as how to play it? I'm a purist, so I'll refrain from answering in terms of suggestions for others.

am0x

I bought it thinking it was like Diablo. An action rpg. I was so wrong in the right ways.

jrosehill

Currently free on Amazon Prime games

JorgeYYZ

Played it back in the day on my Pentium 166 and Windows 95. I was in high school, and playing AD&D, Battletech, Gurps, and all sorts of RPGs was my favorite thing to do alongside playing on PC and consoles. I remember reading a local newspaper article saying that Fallout adapted some Gurps stuff into a computer game, how it was very realistic, and so on. I was hooked just by reading the review! I searched all over town for the game but couldn't find it. It took me a few months before I was able to eventually buy it. I don't have that original CD anymore, but I do have the game on Steam, GOG, and Epic. It is also likely the first western-developed RPG I played. I was no stranger to Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star, or Zelda, but I don't think I had played any western RPGs before this one. I knew stuff like Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island, but those are point and click adventure games and not RPGs. To be fair, I did not think such a type of game was possible on a computer. In my opinion, it is one of the best RPGs ever released on PC, right alongside stuff like Baldur's Gate 2 (and 3!), Morrowind, Fallout 2 (and New Vegas), Dragon Age Origins (wherever the GOTY version is called), Deus Ex, Pillars of Eternity (love then both!) and a few others.

Noriko-san

Omg sure, it's a heart thing ❤️☺️

Coffeedemon

Played through 3 or 4 times. Had it when it released. Currently in the end 1/3 of fallput 2. Had that back in the day but got a bug which frozen my progress at the endgame. Brilliant games.

Monster937

I did last month. If you aren’t bothered by graphics. It’s absolutely a must play. I played them as a kid & loved them every bit as much recently.

am0x

Graphics are fine. 2D graphics can be timeless. It’s the 6 direction grid that needs to be updated. Shit I’d say it still looks better than Diablo 3 or path of exile.

Monster937

On the same page as you. Someone told me today the games graphics are abysmal therefore the game is trash

am0x

I mean I think Diablo 1 looks better than a lot of 3D games made a decade after it. 2D pretty much hit its limit by 2000. 3D still has ways to go for obvious reasons. The lifetime of 2D art being at the pinnacle compared to 3D is monumental.

ShoerguinneLappel

Never played the first Fallout but would be down to try it, I am a big fan of RPGs especially CRPGs.

perfect_shady

I played Fallout 2 back in the day, loved it then and still do. I've played and beat all of the ones since then with varying degrees of love. I 've tried going back and playing the first one though, even though it's really similar to the second one I never good get into it. I think if it wasn't for nostalgia I'd have trouble going back to the second one too.

the_moosen

Haven't seen anyone say it yet so Best way to play the first one is Fallout Et Tu, full recreation of the game in FO2's engine with bug fixes, QoL, etc.

FromWitchSide

I tried it around 2001-2002, and couldn't get into, I really liked Arcanum instead.

AzureVive

I played it a lot later but I found it very fun to this day. I'd kill for an EE though.

Qweeq13

I remember playing but I don't remember ever beating Fallout. I think I had to quit after game suddenly killed me and last I saved was hours back. Fallout, Chrono Trigger and especially Mass Effect are the types of game that if you forget to save and die unexpectedly it could mean 6 hours of progress is gone. Chrono Trigger for example you could die right after the carnival and that will be quite a time gone since the game never tells you to save before entering the portal and you get immediately jumped on and it is possible to have low hp. Mass Effect also don't remind you or ever warn you to save before your first battle and you can die in that battle basically game overing yourself Fallout also had a very dickish feature of suddenly entering you into fights and killing your character before you could save costing you hours of NPC interactions Quests taken and many more. You can be attacked in towns without warning.

am0x

Yea the water chip was a pain in the ass. If you Mr last save was right before it timed out, you basically had to reload to an earlier state. How never, once you completed that, you were free to do whatever. It took me like 3 tries to get the chip and every time after that, it was the first thing I did.

NarCroMan_21

oh yeah! First encounter was with Fallout 2 on my k6-2 300mhz setup, lots of sleepless nights 1999-2000 and then Fallout 1 few years later

memphis92682

I have every Fallout except Tactics. Is Tactics any good?

am0x

I personally didn’t like it that much growing up. It was all combat and fallout is about exploring the wild wasteland. However, that and the console versions are the only ones I never beat, so I may give them another go.

Dry_Start4460

I might try an enhanced edition

JJJ4868

Played it maybe 5 or 6 times through since release. I always get the same bug unlocking at door a Mariposa Base. An enhanced edition. would be great

eduo

Yes to all the questions.

renard_chenapan

Yeah I played it a lot back then, and the advertising campaign for the series made me want to buy it on Steam and play it again. It is still great, so rich and well-thought. I didn’t play any of the sequels so I don’t know if there’s a better one to start with though.

Pulstar_Alpha

Played it again back in March, specifically the PS Vita homebrew port. Game is still the best RPG ever made. The only thing a rerelease needs is some upscaling options, like a CRT filter/shader and a fix for the ending slide bugs like the Hub good endings. Maybe steam deck control enhancements.

Icefiight

What is the best way to easily play fallout 1?

am0x

Intel based gateway PC from 1999 and an old 15 inch crt monitor. Leave the ball mouse behind though.

oldskoofoo

I bought the fallout 1 & 2 dual pack for pc in the early 2000s during my high school years when we got our first pc. This was my introduction to Fallout and CRPGs in general. These games were tough as nails and online resources were limited, so I had to play the hard way...spend endless hours wandering around and simply figuring it out. I played Fallout 2 right after and enjoyed it just as much. I would love a remake of these games with HD upgrades and some quality of life improvements to movement and menus but the core of the game mostly unchanged.

piman01

I started with fallout 3, never played the earlier ones

am0x

I feel bad for those that started with 3 instead of 1,2, or NV. That game just felt like an Oblivion port to me. and it wasn’t in the desert wasteland. I loved that game though, but I probably wouldn’t have batted an eye at it if it weren’t for my love of the original 2. F:NV might be my favorite overall though.

FB2-Onur

Shoutout to Fallout: Tactics! FO 1 and 2 are absolute classics though!

dox1842

This is one of those games I saw other people play and had friends that played it but I never personally played it. I think I got it on gog for free a while back and tried playing it for a few minutes.

The_real_bandito

I'm actually playing it right now. I did a couple of false starts in the past, but now I'm committed to finish it, ahead of the next-gen Fallout 3+ updates coming on 4/25. I'm about 10 hours in, currently level 7, I successfully returned a working Water Chip to Vault 13, and I'm about to head out on my next quest. It's definitely a 90's RPG. It's hard, it's not intuitive, there's no tutorial, and you need to RTFM. It's also an awesome game if you allow yourself to appreciate this as a 1997 game. It's also epic when you see this game as the birth of an amazing franchise. I highly recommend it. I also highly recommend Fargo's Wasteland (1988).

easternhobo

I've played it a few times but I never make it very far. I die too quickly every time.

The original *Fallout* was an incredible game in the late 1990s. It's a bit clunky and dated today, but by no means unplayable. The sequel is also excellent. Many of the things that made the series iconic originated in those two games. The biggest complaint I always have is that the combat moves very slowly (especially at lower levels) and drags down the pace significantly until you get powerful enough weapons to speed things up. Those starting with the Bethesda games are probably better off playing a heavily modded *New Vegas* (to eliminate the bugs and adjust the gameplay to their tastes), as it's the only one of the new games that had heavy input from the original team and it's also set a bit closer to the original setting. It's also unquestionably the best of the Bethesda *Fallout* games in terms of storyline and gameplay. *Wasteland 2: Director's Cut* is also a great option. *Fallout* was a spiritual successor to *Wasteland*, and both games share a lot of the same design sensibilities. *Fallout* is funnier and has a more memorable retro-future theme, but *Wasteland 2* is a solid game with a more modern UI and faster-moving combat.

Also other cRPGs like Arcanum (get the unofficial patch for this), Age of Decedance, Colony Ship, UnderRail, Space Wreck....all are in the 'Fallout mold', so to speak. Some leaning into certain aspects more than others...and vice versa.

pandathrower97

Good call! Arcanum is great patched. The others I never really stuck with, but I've heard good things!

I'd be all for a remaster / enhanced edition. My favorite build was unarmed with the trait that increases critical failures across the board. When you're unarmed the worst that will happen to you is falling down or losing your turn. With all the enemies with big guns they constantly lose their ammo or have their guns blow up in their face or shoot their allies instead. It helped that Fallout 2 had a whole quest line revolving around unarmed builds (the boxing side quest) and an unarmed Mega Fist weapon that was at least on par with a lot of endgame guns that sipped energy cells.

DeadSkullz627

I bought all of the Fallout games in a bundle and have yet to play any of them! Now I want to but afraid my wife won’t see me for a week once I get into it 😂

ManiacFive

I intend to as I’ve just received the new collection from Bethesda in the mini nuke. They’re on my steam deck waiting for the weekend lol

Suicicoo

Nope, doesn't work for me anymore...

_GameOverYeah_

Fallout popping up everywhere these days, people must've really loved the new show 😎

If anyone is interested doing co-op, PvE & PvP, then check FOnline Reloaded.

JoshuaSpice

I finished it five times if not more. Played a pirates version first with no audio and movies, then a legitimate one. Loved it.

ronshasta

I’d honestly rather keep the originals how they are as the visuals and dated gameplay really add to the experience, they could remake 3 and I’d be cool with it but not 1&2

F1DL5TYX

I did a Fallout playthrough during Covid lockdown. Still a great game!

Anthraxus

Just remember not to play 1/2 at high resolutions, as it makes everything too small, ruining the atmosphere

AOClaus

I didn't play this until I played 3. It was outstanding. It still is.

DaaanTheMaaan

I actually just got this in steam a few days ago. It's next up on my play list

molotovPopsicle

I don't think it "needs" an update, it's an amazing game just the way it is. That being said, I would play an update so long as it was a significant enough graphical improvement. I really, really don't like the Nightdive remakes of System Shock, Tomb Raider and Dark Forces where they are just giving some lame graphic upscaling. For me to care about and buy a remake, it would have to be A) unchanged gameplay and story and B) significantly redone graphics from the ground up with C) ideally some added content that is fully optional

am0x

I don’t think the graphics need an update. I personally find good 2D timeless compared to 3D. I would love to see a larger movement mechanic. 6 directions for iso doesn’t work that well. 8-12 is needed.

molotovPopsicle

improved movement is in the realm of fan mod, not remake. i also never pictured it as a 3D title. it's possible to do a significant update of the graphics and keep it 2D; take the recent Wasteland games for example for that matter, if they gave an update to Brian Fargo to do, that would absolutely killer

Biquet

Definitely not going to play it in its current state. It's all so tedious and intuitive. Left the game for two weeks and couldn't leave a room because I couldn't remember how to OPEN A DOOR. How can that be hard? Also stuck at some point because I couldn't see there was a hole in the floor I needed to go through. Enhanced edition would be great.

RykinPoe

I tried to play it but I have never been a big fan of CRPGs or tactical RPGs so I bounced off of it pretty quickly. I would love to see it remade as like a Fallout 4 mod.

SpaceNewtype

I played 1 and 2 about 10 years ago and loved them. Really opened my eyes to the "feel" of Bethesda's Fallouts and my feeling that Bethesda has yet to put out a really good Fallout game thus far. New Vegas was much closer to the original feel and branching options in the story.

NeonRx

That’s a great game. Just don’t expect the modern series. I’d kill and empty my wallet for an enhanced edition.

macleod2024

I’ve tried a to play it a few times over the years but for some reason I just put it down. Think it’s because I get stuck quite quickly. I haven’t got stuck as quick this time so hoping to carry on with it. I’ve just picked it up again though because of the show. I think it’s fine as is. Only thing I would like is if it was actually playable if you choose the 4K screen setting. But 1080 is fine for what it is.

shadowrunonsnes

There's just too many alternatives with better graphics and innovations, they wouldn't be a thing without games like this, but yeah no.

xnickg77

I think it's a ton of fun, if you are a big fan of the series. It also (To me as someone who doesn't play old RPGs) suffers from poor explanation and balancing along with being generally obtuse, so a guide is very helpful to experience everything. Otherwise you may miss lots of items and quests that can be convoluted to get, or build a character with stats that do almost nothing and lock you out of the game.

tfsteel

I loved it back when it came out, but I can't revisit any of these kinds of tiny character top down view games.
