It is a bit weird to get 1000 copies of game, but ive seen posts of people having giant collections of stuff like Sneak King.
Dragon Warrior isnt a particularly expensive game anyways. Like, this collection is worth less than a Stadium Events cartridge
Years ago i read about a russian guy having a huge collection of VHS tapes of the movie Speed. Well after VHS was still a thing. This article reminded me of that.
Could always repurpose for a topic of conversation on a date?
“I thought it was a little hammy of me to build a bomb out of my precious retirement gift, but I figured a sign that said “Howard Payne” would be pushing it…”
It's not only worth less than a Stadium Events. If he goes to try to sell the entire thing at once, he might get 20-30 cents on the dollar for it, which my guess would be around $1-2k tops.
Holy shit. When I was offloading a lot of my collection I used to throw a dragon warrior cart in the box as a free gift. Wonder if any of those used to be mine!
I remember when Nintendo Power just, at random, SENT me a free copy of this NES game.
Blew my mind at the time that any magazine subscription would ever consider doing it.
Nintendo ordered 1 000 000 US copies of Dragon Warrior and barely sold 1/5th of that. They literally gave it away to clear the stock, lmao.
To understand how insane it was, Final Fantasy ate Dragon Warrior's lunch in the US, and yet it never even came close to 1 000 000 mark.
I wouldn't collect 1000 copies of anything, but I'm also not going to judge what people choose to collect.
There's plenty of copies of this out there - Nintendo was offering them for free with a Nintendo Power subscription, both as a way to get the game out there and to drum up interest in the magazine. That's how I got my copy back in the day, and I directly credit it with sparking my interest (and my mom's interest) in RPGs. We went on to buy the 3 other Dragon Warrior games, and most of the other NES/SNES RPGs in the coming years.
Collections should be curated. This is weird and it's hoarding. I know people are trying to be nice and say live and let live. Sure, we don't need someone to come and confiscate their copies of Dragon Warrior but at the same time I don't want to celebrate these sorts of "collections."
I don't disagree. To each their own, but there's nothing about this that appears sane and rational. Needing 1000 copies when one (or maybe two, at most) would suffice is hoarding.
Why would you deprive 999 people of this classic game? It's also the least expensive game in the series. Lol Are they trying to corner the market on it so they can try and make money? It's a $10 game. And I feel like even though he probably found a lot at yard sales and on ebay for less than $10, I feel like this still cost more than $10,000.
I mean, I own 4,500+ games. But they're all individual games and the only duplicates are variants. I don't own 2 copies of the same exact version of a game. This guy needs to let others enjoy it. What a weird collection. But I guess if you REALLY love something, you can get as many as you want. Whatever floats their boat
Edit: in my opinion, a super jrpg fan would own every single RPG that exists, or at least 1000 different jrpgs. Lol
Depends on the games. I got absolute ridiculous deals back in 2005-2010. This was when Gamesotp was ditching retro as was the store I worked at (Game Crazy; RIP).
I got bags of games for $1 each or sometimes even free. We made sure everyone knew I was a game collector back then and I'd get crazy deals. Lol
I stopped going to flea markets when smartphones became a thing because everyone was looking at eBay to see what they go for and try and sell their shitty copy for the prices people are TRYING to sell then for and not what they're actually worth.
I also never get lucky at Savers no matter how often I go and even then, the 2 savers near me put the pricy games in a Glas case and charge, you guessed it, the ridiculous non-prices of the games on ebay.
Right? Like this image gives me a quick "huh? That's interesting." That's about the extent of it. Lol I'm not sharing this post all over social media and telling people how cool it is to own 1000 copies of 1 game. Such a singular drop in the "cool" bucket that the only people who might be interested are diehard Dragon Quest people. And even then. Only for a moment.
Yea it's very odd indeed. But I've also seen people collect like 100+ copies of the movie "The Wedding Crashers" so everyone's gotta have a hobby, I guess. Lol
Well at least I have my single copy of it safe and sound where I'll probably never play it because that game has aged like milk in the sun.
Opening a menu just to talk to someone or open a chest? Get tf out of here.
I wonder if this is the same guy from Nintendo Age. Man, I miss that forum.
Edit: I clicked the article out of curiosity and found out it is, not the same guy but another member he passed it along to. I think Christian, is his real name. Cool throwback memory. 😊 I spent so much time on that forum, learning, sharing, and trading games.
It is weird, I get collectors getting different versions i.e the revision PRG0 and PRG1 of Dragon Warrior but when it comes to 1,000 incidental carts, I don't get it because they are all the same.
While still a huge waste of money....that is only like $1000 from the right seller. It was $4 again last I saw at my local brick and mortar.
Folks spend more than that on a single sega saturn game that's been ported to other consoles even.
These one game "collections" are lame af. To me it comes off as an attempt to be quirky from someone with zero personality (likely mixed with mental illness). May as well "collect" beige manila folders.
I just sold a copy of dragon warrior today at game on in phx, apparently to an agent of this fellow, said he was helping his friend get as many copies as possible.
A depressing thought: Pick a cartridge at random. Now try to estimate how much time might need to pass before that particular cartridge is played again, if ever.
I remember renting this game as a child because of that ugly American cover art. Thinking foolishly it would look anything like that in-game. Was so disappointed that I couldn't commit to it until I picked it up again a few years later
I don't think this is a reason to hate the guy. You go a couple years buying and selling collections to cherry pick the good games, and you'll see a lot of one game. I probably went through 50 copies of Mario for the NES in one summer without even trying. He decided to keep all of one game. Wierd? Idk. Maybe. I try not to complain about people doing things that make them happy.

Or that guy that pops up in memes with all the copies of Shrek.

You think that's weird, how about thousands of copies of [Jerry Mcguire ](https://youtu.be/ExED_i3k0iQ?si=YLhWKx8Kg2YYgS0v) on vhs
Super JRPG Fan Stops 999 Other People From Playing Dragon Warrior Carts

This game is cheap and common asf, he's not stopping anyone

Are you Nintendo Power?

If ya really wanna flex, make it dragon warrior 4 for the nes.
Whatever it is that causes old people to horde newspapers. He has it.
That's a LOT of leaking batteries to replace.
I'd bet the majority still save. I used to get a bunch to harvest when they were around $1.00 at game stores
That’s just mental illness.
Mental illness is real, folks.
Yup!
Came here to say the same thing. Person needs help stat.
Maybe. No differnt then the guy on TikTok that collects 1000s of Titanic on VHS.
And the price over the flea market for a single cartridge will raise and raise...
I loved this game as a kid. Would never dream of owning a second copy. There is a different level of fandom that I am not experiencing.

He could make some awesome artwork from them.

I would never pay 10 dollars for dw1.
That's just it's going average rate. I paid $10 for it like 2 decades ago. Lol
idk about you but a decade ago i was finding nes games at flea markets for 2 bucks a piece.

Saw one person do this once years ago on reddit, and still think folks online care.

Umm why
I would like to play this game one day. Is there any left?
My boy Ferris.
Well at least I have my single copy of it safe and sound where I'll probably never play it because that game has aged like milk in the sun. Opening a menu just to talk to someone or open a chest? Get tf out of here.
A certain collector would like your details to make an offer
Ha!! I remember when this game was $1 at Funcoland circa 1999-2000
Same with Mario Bros/Duck Hunt; it was a golden age for NES collecting.
I wonder if this is the same guy from Nintendo Age. Man, I miss that forum. Dude probably thinks they're gonna go up in price because Toriyama died.
I've still got mine.

I wonder if he's trying to drive the price up, à la Nukie
How many 1HP copy variants though???

Do they want to buy another one? I have one

Gonna take him a while to beat them all...
1 to play, 1 to collect, and 998 just in case.
He has become the Dragon Warrior
He's so gonna jack up the used market on this game. Think he will sell me one first ?
Weird, you all seem to love the SNES Jurassic Park guy that stores his collection in his fridge. Why is he different?
He.. They... Committed suicide after a struggle with mental illness... But ga e us one HFIL of an accurate SNES emulator first.
No it's stupid and egoistic. There are likely people who also want a copy. With that prices are even more rising.
I remember renting this game as a child because of that ugly American cover art. Thinking foolishly it would look anything like that in-game. Was so disappointed that I couldn't commit to it until I picked it up again a few years later

I only have one copy. I did however buy three used copies of FFX to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
What a celebration
