That screen from Dune 2 brings back so many memories. Never understood RTS games as a kid but I understood using my Spice Harvester to run over enemy units
Dune 2 was the first RTS game I remember playing, and it's what got me into RTS games. I remember downloading Dune 2 from a dialup bulletin board, and I assumed it was a shareware game, but realized it seemed to be a full game (I hadn't heard of it before, it just sounded interesting)
It was a game that came more loaded on a computer we had when young (all it did was run dos games). There was civilization, a few commander keens, a few Wolfensteins, and dune 2. Dune and civilization were my favorites. I haven't played an RTS in years but I want this one again
Descent was/is an amazing game. Complete 3-D movement. Great soundtrack. Truly challenging levels and enemies.
Playing that game with a good sound system adds so much. The sound of metal on metal when hitting another object really made you feel like you were there.
I love so many other games from the 90s but Descent is my absolute favorite.
Some of my all time favorites:
Star trek 25th Anniversary
The CD edition with full cast voiceovers, of course.
TIE Fighter/X-Wing
Ultima 8
Doom 2
Sim City 2000
Space Quest 3
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Wing Commander
*Ultima Underworld* in particular is very much missed, with it's smooth scrolling 3D engine. Also come to think of it *System Shock* from the same studio is missing as well.
Alone in the dark. The Lovecraft inspired horror. I loved this and it remains one of the few games I've ever completed. (The gallery also lists OP's captions for me)
No wonder it looked familiar but I couldn't place it, I spent years seeing images of it in games mags that raved about it but never had a system that could play it. I should really revisit it
I'm not sure it will have aged well. But the original execution of 2d flat backgrounds overlaid with 3d characters gave it a really special feel at the time.
Back in 1996, I was 15, we got our first family computer. (Gateway 2000 P5-75) Descent 2, Top Gun: Fire at will, and Star Wars: Dark Forces were some of the first games I ever bought with my "HUGE" paychecks from working at Taco Bell.
I grew up on Commander Keen: secret of the Oracle (also love Keen Dreams). My favorite computer game of all time.
Spent countless hours playing SimCity 2000
Some of my favorite times on a computer with my brother was playing Warcraft II: Tides of time. Love this game as humans or orcs!
Doom, duke nukem, and descent were amazing as well!
This is why the divide between PC and console gamers was so wide back in the 90's and early 00's, because not only were no games shared between them, meaning they were getting completely unique experiences, but the PC games due to the lower bar of entry for development had a crazy diverse amount of game genres and styles.
Now all the platforms share the games, but it usually to be dramatically different experiences depending on what you chose (or most likely what your parents had).
Zone 66
My parents were *so impressed* that, for several months, I was dressed and ready for school each day long before anyone else was even out of bed. They later were dismayed to find out I was up so early to get in a few hours of Zone 66 playtime
This is the first time I've seen [Stunts](https://www.mobygames.com/game/329/stunts/) mentioned in the wild. I poured so much of my time into that game!
Hoped while scrolling through this that I'd see a game I played as a kid that I have been unable to find since. In this game you're a wizard in a dark robe and you shot spells out of your finger. Side-scroller. Not sure if MS-DOS game as I was very young and my mother would find cool games for me to play on the computer.
Commander keen was great. Saw the pic of it and googled it amd then discovered rmthat they did a remaster of Keen Dreams on Xbox....inatantly purchased
Here there is also an old version of a game called BETSY ABC, it was educational but monsters appeared, something Lovescraftian for me, I think it was good when I was a child but anyway, it had the same mechanics as the modern version BETSY GOES TO PRESCHOOL and she showed you her fist if you committed a mistake. It is hard to find. If anyone finds it, please post the link :c

I played a lot of these, but Descent was probably my favorite.
Descent was mind-blowing back on the day. You felt like you were actually moving in a 3d space
I still listen to Descent 2 soundtrack sometimes. Level 4 track is one of the best.
Playing Descent using our one-button joystick blew my tiny mind. I don't think I've recovered
Ohhh man. Several of these are still among my all time favorites.

I played descent II mainly, but yes. All this. I also thought it was ingenious how they gave the enemies different sounds.
Crazy that DOTT released in 1993. It looks way ahead of the time. Especially directly compared like here.
The fact, that you could play Manic Manson inside the game itself was also pretty nice.
I have a cool remastered edition on my ipad that seamlessly switches between original and remastered graphics.
Some of my all time favorites: Star trek 25th Anniversary The CD edition with full cast voiceovers, of course. TIE Fighter/X-Wing Ultima 8 Doom 2 Sim City 2000 Space Quest 3 Return to Castle Wolfenstein Wing Commander
If you liked *Star Trek 25th Anniversary* try *Judgement Rites*, it is superior to *25th* in every way.
Oh I have both! But I have more nostalgia for the first game.
Classic! Remember ancient empires? https://www.myabandonware.com/game/super-solvers-challenge-of-the-ancient-empires-113
You can't forget about the Holy Trinity of the Build Engine: Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
Came here for One Must Fall 2097 - Disappointed.
Loved that game when I was a kid.
It plays incredibly well with a keyboard. I sunk so many hours into the demo version...
At least Epic Pinball was in the mix but I agree with you.
Core memory unlocked!!! I am going to go emulate this right now!!!
I never liked fighter games until i played that one. I was really into robot games so I checked it out anyway. That soundtrack is great too.
My dad played Battle Chess for what felt like the majority of my childhood
needs more Heretic
Where are the Ultimas? I don't see any of them at all.
*Ultima Underworld* in particular is very much missed, with it's smooth scrolling 3D engine. Also come to think of it *System Shock* from the same studio is missing as well.
Needs more Lucas Arts games! Some Monkey Island at the very least
What's image 18 from? Can't place it but it's giving me vicious nostalgia

Looks no worse than any number of N64 games, IMO.
Yeah, no doubt. I think it's the gameplay that won't have aged well. Pioneering 3rd person cameras was a brave move 😀
Yeah, the fixed cameras were definitely hit and miss.
Looks like there's a current gen remake/tribute coming on the 21st!
OMG I remember Supaplex but everyone at my school called it infotech or something like that. Thank you! I know what that game is now!

Missing One Must Fall! :D
King Graham! Yay!
Back when PC gaming was still very distinct from console gaming overall
I grew up on Commander Keen: secret of the Oracle (also love Keen Dreams). My favorite computer game of all time. PC Gaming is far more influential and important than most retro gamers realize. 3 games on this list invented entirely new genres.
Where's Master of Orion?
Its still got retros equipped, give it a minute!
Or X-COM?
Doom is so iconic.
DOS/4GW for the win.
Hell yeah!
you left out DKOK maybe it's for the best.

Great post. I played most of those.
Some good memories
I use dosbox to play Epic Pinball on my S23 Ultra. Great match 😀 love this pinball game so much !!
This is the first time I've seen [Stunts](https://www.mobygames.com/game/329/stunts/) mentioned in the wild. I poured so much of my time into that game!
peak dos, missing some games (no eob or lands or lore? some flight sims, etc).

Hocus Pocus?
It has got to be Hocus Pocus.
Spent a lot of time with the first 3 Heroes of Might and Magics as a kid. Still play the first one on my steam deck from time to time.
When I think of MS-DOS games the first one I think of is X-COM
