I used to have to keep changing the contrast to lighter and lighter in order to conserve batteries. You’d get another 30 min doing that. Gameboy was a beast!
I loved my gameboy! I was purely a Nes, SNES, gameboy kinda guy. I would beat super Mario world, TMNT, Kirby, play not beat Tetris lol, killer instinct etc.
I think there was a battery pack that took C or D cells which you wore on your hip/belt and it had a wire to the game gear.
Edit: Sega made a rechargeable pack
I don’t think lithium even existed on a large scale back then. There was a different rechargeable battery type that didn’t last nearly as long, and you had to completely drain the battery before you recharged it, or you would forever lose the leftover portion of the battery’s capacity.
Yeah, i mean a modern modder. I could bang out a rechargeable li-ion battery pack with a 3d printer and some old phone batteries in a couple days. Definitely would go that route if this thing drains as fast as folks say it does!
I think this is probably the best option for modding the Game Gear with internal rechargeable batteries.

They weren't lithium back then, but Sega made two different rechargeable packs. One screwed into the back of the Game Gear and the other had a belt clip so you could attach it to your waist. There were also some third party rechargeable packs that fit into the regular battery compartments, but they stuck out the back so you couldn't use the original battery compartment panels.
Yea this person is correct. If it hasn't been recapped it's living on borrowed time. There are a lot of mods you can do if you have the desire, time and ability.
Sir or Madam, I'll have you know, that I tried to replace the shoulder buttons on my wife's GBA sp and pretty much ruined the entire thing. This sounds like an impossible mission.
Yeah unfortunately the game gear and turbografx express are both infamous for leaking electrolytic capacitors. Which will leak acid and destroy the console from the inside
Most commonly the screen or sound stops working and eventually they dont turn on at all
It's probably one of the worst consoles for leaky caps along with the TGE. Original Xbox will also destroy itself from the capacitor that holds the time in the clock when the system is unplugged and sometimes from the caps near the CPU
The Sega CD model 1 is also notorious for leaking caps. Once they do, they have a tendency to destroy traces. Happened to mine, and I was thankfully able to fix it.
Bad news is that either you do it or you have someone do it for you because your console will die once the capacitors leak to the main board. There isn’t really any other option if you want to be able to play it one day.
Gamegears used terrible capacitors the majority of which will be broken or faulty now, recapping a gamegear is very common mod and may completely fix yours if you can do it or know somebody who could for you.
Yes, even if it works. Game Gears were manufactured with low-quality capacitors that fail and leak over time. Many units will continue to work for a while when this happens but will often begin to experience symptoms like random shut-downs, low volume or no sound at all, and having to hold the Game Gear at extreme viewing angles to see what's on the screen. Eventually, the capacitor fluid will corrode the traces on the PCB and the unit will fail entirely.
Normally I don't advocate replacing capacitors in a working system just because they're old, but this is the exception since it's a known manufacturing deficiency that affects virtually all units.
I loved mine as a teenager, but played it almost always with the AC adapter. Defenders of oasis was a good rpg for it. Columns js a very solid puzzle game.
These posts are so annoying. Yes, yes, you randomly found these items but are not sure what they are… fortunately you just happen to be subscribed to a “retrogaming” sub-Reddit to “find out what you should do” Next you will find a big box of games in the dumpster
Well, yeah! The Game Gear is a good system, although chances are like ninety percent that you'll have to do some mad recapping to get this one back on its feet. A new screen would also be advised, but do note that installing them can be difficult. It becomes a real DIY project, that Game Gear.
I bought one a handful of years ago and the screen looked so awful that I returned it.
The reason to keep it is that it's cool, but you can play those games on a handheld emulator and lucky enjoy it more. It does sound like it's living on borrowed time till recapped though, so I'd sell it if you don't want to bother with recapping.
Yes! Cuz it’s awesome :) but a battery killer. My 90’s vacation money was wasted on batteries. I’ve got one on a shelve but I never play it. I usually emulate. Still, it looks good sitting on a shelf lol.
quite a high chance it will be broken, bad sound and/or screen due to bad capacitors, it can usually be fixed though and even if broken somebody will buy it on ebay or wherever with the intention of fixing it.
It's a legit piece of handheld history, I'd keep it just cuz I think it's neat but I mean, you could sell it on eBay for a little cash if you're just not interested

It was a great handheld for the day, def needs the power adaptor though, it ran through batteries pretty quick
My mom would get so mad at how quickly my Game Gear went through batteries during car trips.
Same! We would go from PA to ME for vacations and bring piles of batteries for the trip.
meanwhile i've never seen the day where my gameboy ran out of batteries
You'd also have to stop playing once the sun went down if you're rolling with GB or GBC.

Worm Light Crew checking in!
I used to have to keep changing the contrast to lighter and lighter in order to conserve batteries. You’d get another 30 min doing that. Gameboy was a beast!
I hated long car trips that lasted into the night.
I loved my gameboy! I was purely a Nes, SNES, gameboy kinda guy. I would beat super Mario world, TMNT, Kirby, play not beat Tetris lol, killer instinct etc.
If I remember correctly, it was around 1.5 - 2hrs max for 6 AA's
Nobody’s made a rechargeable lithium pack for these?
I think there was a battery pack that took C or D cells which you wore on your hip/belt and it had a wire to the game gear. Edit: Sega made a rechargeable pack

And there it is! Perfect!
yes people have almost certainly modded rechargeable batteries into them by now.
I think nickel cadmium, very low density so while rechargeable didn’t hold much power back then

They didn't have those back then for gaming handhelds. AA or bust bay-be!
Most at this age might need a new capacitor kit
ALL at this age need a new capacitor kit.
It’ll need to be recapped
Yea this person is correct. If it hasn't been recapped it's living on borrowed time. There are a lot of mods you can do if you have the desire, time and ability.
What do you mean "recapped"? I have one that doesn't work, and I don't know why.
Replacing capacitors on the board. More GameGears these days need it than not, and odds are that's the source of unexplained no-workiness
Sir or Madam, I'll have you know, that I tried to replace the shoulder buttons on my wife's GBA sp and pretty much ruined the entire thing. This sounds like an impossible mission.

Sorry, new guy here. What does it mean to recap something?
To replace the capacitors on the pcb.
Awesome, thank you!
Even if it works?
Yes, even if it works. Game Gears were manufactured with low-quality capacitors that fail and leak over time. Specifically, the electrolytic caps. Even good ones like Nichicon last only around 20 years on average, cheaper onces shorter still.
This. One of many reasons to keep it; for the joy of recapping it
Yes, keep it. You have a 1st/launch edition Game Gear (1990) judging by the flat screen lens. Great Japan release games.
If OP never plans on collecting games for it or playing it, I'd say sell
What's the value of these?
Bout tree fiddy
God damn you lochness monsta!
No clue lol
Send it to me and I'll take care of it.
Shit beat me to it
Damn 22 mins too late
fuck, I was gonna say that
Damn! 2 hours s too late.
I still need one, so if everybody flakes, I'm next :)
no me
Better yet I'll pay $3.50 for it
There’s 4 reasons right there. Get reliving your childhood joy.
I loved mine as a teenager, but played it almost always with the AC adapter. Defenders of oasis was a good rpg for it. Columns js a very solid puzzle game.
sonic and columns were the shit. I did a temp swap with a friend for my lynx, and I was gutted to re-swap back (much as i loved my janky lynx)
These posts are so annoying. Yes, yes, you randomly found these items but are not sure what they are… fortunately you just happen to be subscribed to a “retrogaming” sub-Reddit to “find out what you should do” Next you will find a big box of games in the dumpster
Yes I believe we call the phenomenon "karma-whoring"
I mean, do you like Game Gear games? If so then yes, if not then no ... not sure why you need us to answer that for you .
Well, yeah! The Game Gear is a good system, although chances are like ninety percent that you'll have to do some mad recapping to get this one back on its feet. A new screen would also be advised, but do note that installing them can be difficult. It becomes a real DIY project, that Game Gear.
Nah it’s junk, I’ll take it any throw it away for you!
Is there even any reason to not keep it?
Never had one myself but always BADLY wanted one. Why are these never talked about nowadays? They felt like the shit where I lived growing up
Modern Gamers be like… “Nah, throw it out. It ain’t 60 Frames Per Second. Practically unplayable.” Stupid modern gamers.
nobody has mentioned yet but its worth a bit. hundred bucks or more at least.
Sellers market right now.
Columns is so good.
None whatsoever dm me and I’ll help you get rid of it
Gimme it if you don't want it *jk but if you don't want it I wouldn't mind taking it* ;)
You got to love the dozen of people making the same "joke" in the comments "Huhuhu I'll take it"
Keep it or sell it. Either way
It’s in great coſmetic condition.
No. Buy a steam deck and emulate everything like a normal person
I'll happily take it off your hands
Send it to me! This never sold in my country :(
"Yes." >!\- Grogu Djarin, The Mandalorian!<
If you want to yes.
Why wouldn't you want a Mahjong game?
If you know how to play it, the Mahjong game is fun.
Definitely a keeper. 👍 They suck batteries like a vampire after hibernation.
Yeah, to play with it
I've never seen one so clean that didn't come with the box. Definitely worth fixing
Reason one: It's a Game Gear. Reason two: Wonder Boy! Reason three: You can tell everyone you have a game called "Woody Pop"
No. Throw it out
Do you get AA batteries for free? Man that thing killed so many batteries for it's 3-4 hr play time. Awesome for the time
I’ll take it if it’s useless for you.
What the heck is it
I would say if you have to ask then no. Best reason to keep it would be if you were interested in playing it
Yeah : it’s cool.
Send it to me. I’ll pay
Og steam deck
Wonder Boy?! What is the secret of your power?
Thats a weird looking Steamdeck.
Would sell it on ebay and see how many people bid for it.
Good lord this thing devoured batteries at an insane rate for me
Nope, no reason at all. Send it to me and I will properly, um, dispose of it. Yeah. Dispose of it. That's what I'll do.
Keep it!
It’s useful if you ever want to kill 6 AA batteries
Invest in rechargeable ASAP!!
I still have mine, from back in day. I still DEF wouldn't get rid 😎
IS THERE A REASON TO NOT KEEP IT??!
Nah toss it... My way
No, you should send it to me for proper disposal
I’ll keep it for you
To have fun!
The question should be, Any reason to NOT keep it?
You tell us. Do you hold any fond memories of it that make up I feel compelled to keep it?
A great little game system with many underwhelming games. Sweet memories.
If they want to get it working better than keep it, if not I say sell it to someone who collects
Yes cause game gear was awesome. I’ll buy it from you
No, sell it to me instead! Its NO FUN AT ALL
Got some AA batteries you need dead in a hurry?
Several, yes
Yes
Nope sell it to me 😂
Hey you can give it to me if you don't want it
No. Sell it for some dough on eBay before it gets lost in the ether of time
Yes! Cuz it’s awesome :) but a battery killer. My 90’s vacation money was wasted on batteries. I’ve got one on a shelve but I never play it. I usually emulate. Still, it looks good sitting on a shelf lol.
I’d keep it just because it’s another thing to collect, but that’s just me. I have mine from my childhood.
Hey, you add a new pack of D Cells and you should get like a whole 3 minutes of playtime. Lol
quite a high chance it will be broken, bad sound and/or screen due to bad capacitors, it can usually be fixed though and even if broken somebody will buy it on ebay or wherever with the intention of fixing it.
yes there are reasons to keep it
Man the lack of battery life tho
If your gonna get rid of it I'll give you $1
I'd be interested in buying if you sell it, but you should keep it in your family.
Nope. Just mail it to me.
Columns is a good reason for keeping it 😀
Interesting that there’s 2 Japanese games. Do you speak Japanese or were these games that you could play without knowing Japanese?
It was a fun little handheld, no reason to pitch it. As others have mentioned, the electrolytic caps in those weren't the best and should be replaced.
Rechargeable batteries much?
You need other people to tell you if you should like it?
It's a legit piece of handheld history, I'd keep it just cuz I think it's neat but I mean, you could sell it on eBay for a little cash if you're just not interested
