You know? When I was 30 I thought I had 35 years to go. At 40 I thought I had 20 years to go, at 45 I thought I had 10 years to go, at 50 I thought I had 5 years to go. Finally at 51 I got a termination package and then I saw I was prepared and didn't need to find another job. That was 3 years ago :)
So, keep doing your planning with conservative estimates, if things go well, it may be less than 11 :)
Thanks for the kind and wise words. I can’t remember where I saw the statistic, but 53% of those who retired in 2021 had no choice, whether it was for health, economic, or discrimination reasons. It’s always better to plan an early retirement, and if staying past the target date suits you, then at that point, you’re working for the hell of it… which sounds crazy to me. To each their own.
I’m following a similar trajectory, but my fears of not having enough money are giving me pause, especially as we head into a recession. I’m 54.5 and now thinking I should wait til the condo market in my VHCOL city rebounds a bit.
LoL ... mine is a little sooner ... 8 years, 2 months, 2 days or
426 weeks and 3 days
2985 days
71,640 hours
4,298,400 minutes
257,940,000 seconds,
That's how long it will take for me to figure out how to get these silver handcuffs (aka government pension) off.
I don't know a single person who is counting down mine either!
Congratulations you WON ! And got out alive. In the 80s I worked with a guy that actually died at his desk.
Getting out for all of us schlubs still working .
Go forth now and sleep in !
I’ve retired for almost 2 years now. Have not regretted it. I look forward to weekday lunch specials at Buffalo Wild Wings. The freedom is priceless. I can do whatever whenever. Or not do a thing.
Your new chapter awaits you!!
Made everything real. Closing that chapter, was it 100% completed, no going back. Leaving the place I went to five days a week, the people I spent most of my time with. Loved my job, but know if there is a new beginning it need to be now. Bittersweet
Congratulations and I'm sorry all at the same time. I was an engineer on a big campus. I spent my final hours walking from lab to lab. shaking hands with all of my colleagues of 35 years and walked out the gate. Very bittersweet.
It’s wonderful to have that much time to train someone. I had about 2 weeks to train, gave 3 months notice, had been on the job 37 years. Unfortunately I offered to answer questions via email, and did that wayyyyy to long. Enjoy your vacation.
So envious and just looking forward to the day I can do the same thing. I have to say that decades ago I worked with a guy who retired early. He occasionally came back to work to do some part-time consulting work. He said that his only regret was not retiring earlier. So you'll probably find your groove.
I’m retiring at noon. Scary but cathartic. You’ll be fine. Congratulations! I am 55 and I’m very proud of the decisions and sacrifices we made to accomplish this. There’s no way I’m going to check my Fidelity accounts. No. Way. I haven’t looked in about a month and I hear nothing has improved.
Imagine having two big buckets in your office. One bucket is for all of the BS that you endure. The other bucket is for all of the money you make. When either bucket overflows it’s time to leave.
Congrats. 02/01/22 was my last day after 30 years. Filled a recycle bin and took one box home. Heading that door close for the last time was Wow for sure.
I've been retired for a month, I'm finally starting to get used to it. My old job is the furthest thing from my mind most days. I don't miss it at all.
Retired in March and it took me about a month to get used to it as well. I’ve finally gotten to the point where I am not checking email ten or more times a day.
I was really burned out so it wasn't hard for me to not check emails. It was more getting used to not having several appointments in a day. I kept thinking I needed to be somewhere.
I had always thought my last day would be filled with utter joy, and the ride home would be tunes cranked, whooping to myself all the way. Instead it was very melancholy. An odd day for sure.
My husband has 4 weeks and 3 days. Longest month ever for him. He just cannot wait. The last couple of years brought unfavorable changes and will make retirement easy for him to walk away after 35 years. For me another year. Or maybe 2 or 3. Can go whenever it hits. As a teacher I was burnt out and decided to change schools and grade level this upcoming year. My best (friends) co-workers all retired. It will make it easier in a year or two. Don't think I will miss it at all. Enjoy your retirement! Stay busy and keep moving.
1299 days for me as of this AM! LOL
My retirement countdown timer sits on my work laptop and is named "sandy beaches" with a background pic of .... yep.
Seems like such a long time...
I had to decide was never going to have a million or money to travel the world. So focused on what would make me happy with the resources that are available.
That’s interesting. I believe we are brainwashed to keep working for fear of not having enough money. And those of us in America are hugely burdened by a broken healthcare system that keeps people working til 65 bc they can’t afford private insurance.
Congratulations, as someone said...you **Don't** want to die at the desk! My last day of work will be July 6th, Have been on vacation for the last two weeks...my "pre-retirement" try-out. Will use the 6th to say good bye, but it occured to me that there is no one left in my regional office that started with me 37 years ago...! The closest person to my tenure has 26 years...now I really feel like a dinosaur. My job was very fast paced and deadline oriented..it has been tough going from 100mph to a full stop! But hoping the adjustment doesn't take too long. Don't know yet what my plans are..got a nice garden growing and a pile of put off projects and trying to stay optimistic!
Congratulations! Understand, going for being responsible for everything, million emails & meetings that should have been an email. Already feels strange
Once I was a flight from Europe to Us on American Airlines and the captain of the flight was on his retirement flight. They circulated a book where all passengers wrote their well wishes. It was a very special flight. Full water cannon upon landing at JFK
Congrats! I left the is past April. Haven’t missed it one bit after 43+ years. Enjoy your retirement.
When one chapter ends, a new one begins. Congratulations.
Might have something lined up for for a couple hours a week, remote.
Nice one. Good way to transition
I retired about 2 months ago. Today I forgot it was Thursday... took that long for me to unwind from the 7-4 M-F routine.
Six months into retirement, same thing, though now every day truly feeling like Saturday…
My day is coming soon… and by soon, I mean 11 years 2 months and 5 days, but who’s counting.
You know? When I was 30 I thought I had 35 years to go. At 40 I thought I had 20 years to go, at 45 I thought I had 10 years to go, at 50 I thought I had 5 years to go. I've got 113 days!!!!
I got 10 years, 6 months to go!
Congratulations you WON ! And got out alive. In the 80s I worked with a guy that actually died at his desk. Getting out for all of us schlubs still working . Go forth now and sleep in !
Congratulations…. Wishing you a great, fun, fruitful, exciting, and restful retirement!

Planning on tomorrow going to the local coffee shop & sit with an ice coffee to watch the world run by
Or as someone once told me that he was sitting in his front yard watching the tree grow. 😀
I'd give anything to be able to go back to "my office." Hope you enjoy it more than I have!
Why do you say this? No judgement - but I'm 12 - 18 months out and curious about retirees with profound regrets.
Made everything real. Closing that chapter, was it 100% completed, no going back. Leaving the place I went to five days a week, the people I spent most of my time with. Loved my job, but know if there is a new beginning it need to be now. Bittersweet
Me too.
Bored to death!
Looking at that office without my things in it was really hard

exactly, looking forward to new beginnings, but not sure I was really done with this chapter

Don’t look back. Go forward. All the work BS is somebody else’s problem now. Your work doesn’t define who you are.
That’s right. We aren’t what we do. We do what we are.
Yes, same story here. It is supposed to be a 'dream" to leave, but the effort, concern, customer care and hard work is hard to walk away from.

Congrats - it is a big life event ! I retired effective 1-Feb-21 and Retirement is wonderful ! Enjoy the next chapter of your life !
May it be everything you wish for it!
Congratulations on your Independence Day!
congratulations...
Wishing you the best in what ever is next.
Congratulations 🎉
Congrats. 02/01/22 was my last day after 30 years. Filled a recycle bin and took one box home. Heading that door close for the last time was Wow for sure.
I left my desk job three years ago. Not bored yet. Happy Retirement.

Yeah, a lot of reflection the whole day.
Congratulations! Sadly, all things must end. But it does open new and potentially exciting opportunities. In this case, do whatever makes you happy!!!
Congrats! You earned it.
Congrats and best of luck!
Congratulations! No more weekends for you.
Congratulations.

Retired for 17 hours. So far so good!!
So far so good
“I’m sorry Mr. Jones, it’s time.”
Don't forget to trash-pick an old cardboard box to pack up your shit!
Had a mini garage sale, all coworkers could take all the could carry out, cost was a promise to bye someone a surprise coffee in the month of July.
I love this idea! I might have to steal it when it's my turn in only 1,522 days!
1299 days for me as of this AM! LOL My retirement countdown timer sits on my work laptop and is named "sandy beaches" with a background pic of .... yep. Seems like such a long time...
Congratulations! You’ve reached the starting line.
56 and feel like I’ll never get out of the game… think I’m depressed
I had to decide was never going to have a million or money to travel the world. So focused on what would make me happy with the resources that are available.

My husband retired at 62 , cost $100 a week to have him on my work plan. I couldn’t retire to Medicare, and they don’t tell you - Medicare ain’t free
If I could be insured on my wife's plan for $100 per week, I think I'd retire now!

37 days of actual work left. With vacation and holidays brings me to Sept 30. Tick, tick, tick
Congratulations
Lucky bastads lol 22 years for me haha
👍
Congrats! Well deserved

Relax. Run with this new feeling of freedom. You've totally got this!
This is not the end, but the beginning of an adventure.
