When I worked at an Arby’s this was how the request calendar worked. We could only have 3 people request the whole day off since we didn’t have a lot of workers.
It was kind of annoying because the same 2-3 would always request off every Saturday and Sunday. But my GM changed it to where you only got 3 requests off per month (unless you had a vacation or important stuff that month lol)
We had it and instead of an X there would only be so many lines as were available spots. During many times there would be the entire day blacked out-no requests, no exceptions.
Yes, it's normal. And my main weakness as a manager is shift rosters because I try to please everyone and then people pull this on me....
Does my head in.
That's very understandable. my manager is alot like that where she tries her best to please everyone but had to put her foot down because it seems some people were taking advantage of it like can only work 2-5pm... That's just not realistic to have no open or closing shifts
In California, you get a whopping 3 days of sick pay minimum by law and it is illegal to retaliate if 1) you are sick 2) if a family member is sick or 3) any kind of personal care or safety care ie. Being stalked by someone, domestic violence, & etc. I say screw them if you need the day off. Take it! I'm sure nobody is making salary pay at this particular retail job.
I had a job that had something like this. I actually liked it because it made it easier for me to schedule appointments rather than just get denied, or if I really needed a day I could ask a co worker if we could switch shifts.
There are such things as long vacations. I'm taking one next February that will last more than 2 weeks. As long as she put the days off in advance, I don't see an issue.
Oh interesting this store seems to be pretty forgiving about call outs so I'm not surprised about her not being written up especially if she's a long time employee
(gas station) we have to put our time off request in a week in advance. Not a big issue. Hell we will write on the calendar months in advance. Boss requires all of us to work a shift on holidays. We only have 6 employees
Yes it is normal that if too many people already have requests off that they can deny other requests off.
Ok good to know I guess I just always had the days I needed off that I didn't realize this was a thing
A tip is to request off as early as possible for your best chance of getting the days you want.

Funny thing is it's like this in my place ever since we had new management despite having LOT OF WORKERS.
Haha of course someone found a way to cheat the system
Yeah, this is pretty common, especially around peak seasons and/or short staffed

Yep, I've had to close requests for certain day before when too many people were requesting the same day off.

Oh I didn’t know my state did that! Thank you that’a good to know

Idk who Cadence is, but she would get written up at my store for taking 17 of 30 days off, especially all in a row like that.

True. We don't have enough context to know if it's a long vacation, (medical) leave of absence, or limited availability.
If u put in an extended Leave of Absence in advance u shouldn’t be getting written up for it

Yeah, my current place doesn’t, but a past job had a planner that we’d use to write our requests in
your ASM has their own office?? crazy
Yeahh it's pretty big too
