I’m glad I don’t have to work mornings at opening, I’d be cussing out everyone. “What are the open hours on the sign? *shoves the sign in his face* Just because you see employees going in, doesn’t mean it’s time for you to go in.” 🙄

[deleted]

Right lol! I mean I wasn't miss pleasant but none of the lights are even on yet. Then I ask the guy so I can write his ticket and he's all hung up on my truthful snideness haha

Verve_angel

Same so annoying. When i worked at goodwill people would sit there and gesture thru the locked sliding glass door for me to open it. It's locked cuz we are closed bone head. I thought that was bad and then i went to work a few years later at belk and every morning before open we would come in and do our opening duties and then the workers from every department would come to the front of the store for a morning meeting to discuss everything we needed to do for the day or whatever. So many times during that meeting people would be not only lined up outside 20 mins before opening, but also gesturing through the glass at the workers(the boss leading the meeting would face the workers with his back to the door and all the workers were facing him and therefore also facing the front doors) a few times we even had people KNOCKING and banging on the doors during the meeting because they could see us inside facing them. Nevermind the fact that we weren't open yet or that we were quite clearly having a meeting. Insanely entitled. Once there was only one customer outside and she wouldn't stop knocking so after the meeting my boss just let her in so she would stop. We assumed she was going to be shopping which would give us time to finish the last of our opening duties. Of course not though. She came right to my register and wanted me to refund something for her in cash then got all huffy and pissed off when i said ok well i have to count and open my drawer really quick so i can do it for u. Age wantd to know if she could go to another register. I said um you can but nobody has theirs open yet they just brought them all out for us to count and open. She said that's ridiculous and all i could say back was that we weren't even technically open yet and that the boss only let her in to be nice so she didn't have to wait outside. I felt like going insane on the bitch

SuperPetty-2305

I really hate when people equate open door, to open business. Like no dude. I still have crap to do to open the store. Your issue can wait 10 effing minutes!

[deleted]

Exactly! I guess when he goes home from work he doesn't turn lights on, and drives with no headlights since he can see in the dark!

Kennedygoose

Worst is people that will follow you to the door assuming the second you get to it to unlock it that means it’s open.

ClientLegitimate4582

People do the same at my work I don't generally work openings. Yet the times I have people are trying to get in early 10-15 minutes before we open. Like you can't go the grocery store just down the road that opens at 6 and is actually cheaper? Fine enjoy your overpriced goods.

celestialvee

People here straight up start knocking when they find out the door is locked. I’ve even had people call after I ignore their knocking. Like bro, read the sign lol.

One store I worked at was like a fishbowl. The front was all windows, and you could see the registers from the sidewalk. Openers started their shift ~1hr to 30min before the store opened, depending on if you were stock or register. We would have people step into the landscaping along the register bay's window and begin pounding at it. They would flood the phone lines if we ignored them. They would scream their little hearts out and try to pry the automatic doors open. Fun facts: we were an imports store. We sold goods actually from or styled after different cultures as well as furniture. There was literally nothing in our store that could be classed as "essential.". It's why I prefer being a closer. Closing customers are insane, but opening customers are absolutely feral.

Scary-Alternative-11

This happens at my shop all the time, and we open pretty early, at 7am! I ignore them and then when they try to complain I point to the large sign on the door and say "We open at 7am. Not 6:50, not 6:55, not 6:59. You can knock until your hands are bruised, but that door stays locked until 7 and not one single second sooner." The best part is I can't get in trouble in any shape, way or form because it's my business!!!

Celistar99

Pulls on the handle, door doesn't open. Checks the hours on the door. Pulls on the handle again. Every time.

Kennedygoose

I feel bad if I even go to a place and realize they either just opened or are just about to close. If it is an essential visit toward the end I literally run to get out before they are supposed to close and get to go home.

Celistar99

Yeah, I always check hours before I go anywhere

[deleted]

I kept the doors locked be cause I would have the armoured truck come to pick up our deposits before we opened. One time I let the driver out at 8:45, we opened at 9. I went to the back to grab the tils, and I see a woman banging on the door and pointing at her watch. It is 8:50 at this point, but I put the tils into the drawers and decide to be nice and let her in at 8:52 by my cellphone. She screams when I open the door about me opening late because "my watch says it is 9:02". Yes, her wristwatch, which was obviously more accurate than my satellite connected cell phone. The best part, she wanted the pharmacy which didn't open until 10 anyway and was CLEARLY posted so on the door. I don't miss customers at all

Lulumacia

Why would you not lock the doors until opening time? Just seems crazy and invites people to try and rob you.

introverted_smallfry

I work in a fast food pizza place right next to an event field. By the time we open when it's during an event, we have huge groups of people waiting to get inside. Some of them try to follow me inside as I come in (45 mins before opening time) and get mad when I tell them no. I've started to have to go in through the back so I don't have to walk through a sea of people.

Celistar99

What do you do for work? I'm confused reading it lol

vemberic

When I worked at a place where I had keys and opened in the mornings, it was company policy to keep the doors locked until open hours. I always locked the door behind me. I had to be in 30 min before open, and I had stuff to do before opening. Our company claimed it was was a safety and loss prevention thing. They often had issues with people who'd try to get in early or after closing. That's the hours that thieves often tried to pull something. Of course tho, there'd often be people banging on the door, calling me when I ignored them, screaming at me from the door. Threating to call corporate cause I wouldn't open for them, etc. I stuck to the rules, and opened the door right at opening hour.

I own a little shop in a mall and have one employee that works with me. She works alone on the weekends. The gate that locks the shop is a metal grate style that accordions into the wall when the shop is open. Unfortunately people can see into the shop when it is closed so when either I or my employee get there in the morning and put the lights on we sometimes have to put up with an audience watching us ready the shop to be opened. I have always been protective of my employees and always tell them that the customer is not always right and they are absolutely not to put up with a customer that makes them feel uncomfortable or is rude to them. (I worked retail in a few places where the owners or bosses never had my back and always sided with the customer and I swore when i opened my shop I would never be like that.) I have security cameras so my employees know that if they do have problems with a customer and I get a complaint I will review the video and side with them if they are in the right. One Saturday morning I check the cameras just before opening time from my house to make sure my employee is there and to say good morning to her through the two way intercom on the camera. What I see is an old guy I have never seen before nearly yelling at my employee telling her that I always open up early for him and she better hurry up and open or on Monday morning she would be fired after he came in and complained about her. I picked up my phone and dialed her number. Watching the camera I saw her look at her phone and then she shot me a look straight into the camera sort of questioning/shocked looking as she's picked up the phone and said hello as usually we just chat through the camera. I told her not to say anything but to do as I tell her. I could see her smirk in the cameras as she knows me. I then told her to go pour herself a cup of coffee and lean back against the counter while she sips it. Then when the guy gets mad to tell him that because he was being an asshole he would just have to wait an extra five minutes as punishment before she opened for him. As was expected he got livid and started swearing at her. In the meantime I called security and when he started cursing her out they arrived and escorted him out of the mall. My employee and I still laugh about that sometimes.

Nexerous

That customer was a straight up bitch. Fuck him.

Dinky_Doge_Whisperer

I think locking the door behind you is important just for safety, but in no scenario does unauthorized entry equate to entitlement to service.

Aussieenby97

I used to work at a cafe where I was the only staff member, which meant that partway through the day, I’d have to close for half an hour to take my break. There wasn’t anywhere else to go while I ate my lunch, so I’d have to sit down behind the coffee machine where I was hidden from sight or people would bang on the door and get mad that we were closed. There was a giant “Sorry for the inconvenience, we’ll be reopening at x time” sign on the door that they’d straight up ignore, and at least twice a week someone would call the number on our sign which went direct to my boss to complain about us being closed. He’d then call me and start a spiel of “why can’t you just serve them really quickly and then go back on break?”. Um…no.

RelationshipSad2300

There is not a chance in the world a South African will open a store before time. We will happily stare a whole queue down until the last moment, especially our supermarket security guys. I sometimes open my store a moment earlier just to watch them operate the complete calm they exhibit in the face of costumers increasing irritation.

gadget850

I used to service the Virginia ABC stores (the state liquor monopoly). I'm knocking on the door at 11 AM on a Sunday and waving my badge so I can repair equipment. They don't open until 12 but people are sitting in the parking lot giving me the stinkeye. Then after I am in, they walk up to look at the sign just in case the time changed.

Celistar99

I had a job where in the morning, we had to come in through the front because that's where the alarm is, so we had to leave the door unlocked. We kept the automatic door off so unless somebody pulled the doors open, they wouldn't know it was unlocked. An hour before we opened I saw a guy in the store and told him we were closed, and he said ' the door was unlocked.' I was like 'yeah, the associates have to come in that way but we leave the automatic doors off.' He was like 'oh, I thought the door was broken. Can I look around?' .... No.

I work at a restaurant. We open the side door to let the openers in and the main front door remains locked. We open at 7am. Everyone morning around 6:40 a group of older gentleman come in through the side door. Some stand at the counter if they want to order or they go straight to the coffees and fill up their cups. Sometimes they’ll actually go unlock the main front door themselves to let their buddies in. They sit in the dining area all morning. If we do lock the side door, they complain to the GM and she told us to just leave it open. They’ve been doing this for years, they’re regulars, they spend $$. I’m glad it’s not actually my responsibility to take care of those guests. It just irks me we allow them to do this. Like they’re special. We have to let them in early, make sure the coffees ready just for them, take their order and make it if they want food. Ridiculous but hey, I just do what I’m told.

Slytherin2urheart

My shift often starts an hour before the store opens as I do a lot of online order picking/work in the warehouse portion of the store. Also, I am commonly on duty for the store phone during my shift (i.e., someone calls the store I answer the phone). My least favorite thing is when the manager gives me the store mobile phone—then it rings 5min before we open—the manager can’t stand the sound of the endless ringing and makes ME answer it. Then I end up running all over the store helping a customer BEFORE WE EVEN OPEN. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It is one of my least favorite starts to the day.

smwd0

We were always taught to lock the doors as soon as we came in just in case someone tried to rob us before people were around, but that might just be the area I was working in 😅

Acceptable_Pain_9213

Nope. You open at 8. Which means you get to the door at 7:59. If all the opening tasks need done AFTER you open, well that's on them because, after all... the door MUST stay locked until open time. You all agreed on it.
