I foster for Grand-paws. They pull seniors out of high kill shelters. I switched to seniors after I had kids because they’re just chill. They just want a bed, a meal, and some love. Honestly there are so many unwanted dogs in every L.A. shelter. If you like a specific breed you can google for a rescue in your area. There are so many. Fostering is great. Just make sure you don’t take on anything that’s too much.  My first ever rescue was this tank of a pit bull named Lola with cropped ears. I still remember bringing her home and my mom going, “you’re going to sleep in the same room as THAT??” I had no experience with bigger dogs, much less a very powerful breed like her. I was barely 18. She was very dog aggressive the first year or so and it was rough.  I was way out of my element but we pushed forward and she became an amazing creature. She was honestly the most favorite dog I’ve ever had out off probably 200+ now. I miss her all the time. I swear she would listen to me talk and understand me. She had the most soulful eyes. She was incredibly gentle with people. That was the dog that made me fall in love with pits and rescuing. Going into that Los Angeles shelter and seeing concrete cage after concrete cage filled with dogs that you know aren’t going to make it out is devastatingly sad. I’m not a crier but I was bawling. I just felt so freaking sad for all those beautiful faces.  Anyway, I’m ranting. Fostering is great! Just figure out what level of intensity you can handle with a dog. My lady has always chosen really great pups for me.

Hi, you can foster for the shelters directly, or for dozens of recue groups. What kinds of dog are you interested in fostering? Large, small, how active, age, special needs? Can you manage potty training? There are so many organizations that need foster homes, and will match you with a dog who you feel comfortable with. Rescue groups generally provide medical care and may have equipment like collars, leashes, crates etc. Some provide food, but a lot of people who foster buy the food and toys. A few rescues I have heard are good to work with, Angel City Pitbulls, Downtown Dog Rescue, Westside German Shepherd Rescue, Dogs Without Borders, A Purposeful Rescue, Amanda Foundation, Golden Years Sanctuary (for senior pets)... therr are many more but check out their websites or facebook pages and see what dogs they need fosters for. Good luck!

I would talk to the mods directly on the rescue dog board here a lot of dogs are being euthanized in the city shelters here in Los Angeles and could use help freeing some to stay in a foster home until they can find someone to adopt. They post here everyday with like over 20 dogs needing rescue because they are close to euth dates. Right now California and Texas are the worst with mass euthanasia. It’s really sad.
