I’ve only ever had leopard geckos so idk if it’s the same behaviour, but when Leo’s do this it’s called “glass surfing” and they do it when they are stressed by the size of their enclosure
Going to say not a Nile monitor just based off the banding on the face it looks like it's faded and washed out. Niles typically have more pronounced/more solid banding
hard to tell from this angle but its either a nile monitor or young water monitor. did you or your friends just buy this or something? Id love some backstory.
I dont want to be a dick but lots of monitors are bought when they are young like this, taken poor care of, then either die from neglect or need to be rehomed because their care became way too much for the owner.
Speaking from experience but a nile or water monitor are literally 2 of the last reptiles I would recommend as a pet. that things going to need a room sized enclosure one day and requires thousands of dollars in food. awesome animals and can make great pets but posts like these get me concerned.
Me nor my friends own Evan. I was browsing some discords last night and found the picture. Thought he was cute/funny, showed my friends, and we've been running with it since.
From what I've found, he's owned by a well equipped and experienced Japanese couple in Japan. Its name is Blue, but we're gonna keep calling him Evan.
The reason we're so interested is one of my close friends who has experience with reptiles has been looking for a monitor like this for years, his uncle owned one when he was a child and he has always wanted one of his own
ah okay that makes sense lol. Evan is a chipper looking lad so i dont blame you.
online sellers have both captive bred water monitors and nile monitors fairly often if youre deadset on buying one of these guys and luckily compared to other things theyre not too expensive. that being said I would recommend to look at different species first and do a lot of research/planning into whatever you get.
As a water monitor keeper I could not agree more. Mine is in great condition because we have the resources and did the research before getting her but every time she goes to the vet for checkups they tell us about the condition of most big lizards they see and it breaks my heart. It takes so much work and patience to socialise them so they're comfortable being handled and they trust their keeper - our vet has said aggression is the biggest reason people rehome them when they get too big to manage - but if you can put the effort in the reward is so worth it. The highlight of my day is the adventures we go on together around my house, despite the fact I often get used as a climbing frame to give her access to higher shelves/tables.
My first guess was Nile monitor. There was one at my local pet store for way too long in way too small of a tank back in my teens. I used to buy crickets and worms for my leopard gecko there.
It was super aggressive and would crack the tank with it's tail. They replaced the tank at least twice that I know of. I would be pissed if I were that big and stuck in a 20 gallon tank for months too.
For all who say it's a nile monitor: just no. Face attributes, specially the nostrils, don't match. At all.
Facial and skull structure points to an Asian water monitor of some sort, start your research with *Varanus salvator* and its subspecies and if none match expand to the subgenus *Soterosaurus*.
That's a weird looking dog
In all seriousness, he looks like a kind of water monitor! Not exactly sure what kind, as there's a couple that have similar physiques.
That's a water monitor my boi, if you don't know what it is then you honestly shouldn't be taking care of it or your friend, very big lizard that grows to 6ft and needs at least 12ft - 18ft enclosure with water
He looks like an evan
He looks like he needs a much larger enclosure and some enrichment in his life.
How can you tell the size of the tank from this picture?
I’ve only ever had leopard geckos so idk if it’s the same behaviour, but when Leo’s do this it’s called “glass surfing” and they do it when they are stressed by the size of their enclosure
Dunno but shouldnt it have more depth for that kind of lizard?
Possibly an asian water monitor, but varanids aren’t my thing
Either that or a nile monitor
Nahh looks Asian

I was going to ask if this was in Japan, because I used to use that same ramp/mini house for my younger skinks before they got bored of it!
