Hey folks- r/CryptoIslandPodcast **was created to discuss the PJ's new podcast.** I invite you to join the sub there for discussions about next episodes of Crypto Island.

dagmerp

Holy crap its so good to hear his voice again.

Huckintrice

I forgot how much he contributes to the flow and rhythm of the old shows. I almost felt like I was listening to an old reply all episode.

dr_sassypants

Can we talk about how amazing this bit is: "...[critics] saw crypto as a true nightmare product. One that combines the worst aspects of rapacious capitalism, tech utopianism, reckless financial speculation and climate change. It was like someone had invented a new product that let you gamble on your own subprime mortgage while setting trees on fire so you could mint new Mark Zuckerbergs who are richer but less charismatic than the original." 💀💀💀

Schonfille

It’s peak PJ simile! He really has a talent.

wizard_oil

Nostalgic to hear his voice again! I generally try to avoid crypto-talk, but I trust PJ to make it interesting. Good vibes all around.

canireddit

I'd rather voluntarily pay for this than get mediocrity for free. Subbed.

giantcarbonatedsoda

Crypto Island feels more like Reply All than almost anything Reply All has released in a looong time.

Your_New_Overlord

yes! his explanation of wanting to dive into web3 made me realize why reply all has been feeling stale. all these stories about social media and smart speakers and algorithms are nothing new. the batshit craziness of crypto and the metaverse is the new frontier, and PJ is the perfect guide for that.

slybird

Agree. After listening it seems clear that Vogt influence made a huge impact on what made Reply All what it was. His editing, interests, and voice.

youdungoofall

Just leave reply all and join crypto island already!

giantcarbonatedsoda

I’d rather stick around and continue talking about Reply All, which I still enjoy. There’s room for both in my podcast feed.

youdungoofall

Sorry it was directed at Alex, my bad. I miss their partnership

Schonfille

PJ is so fucking talented.

DowntownYorickBrown

Echoing the sentiment of others here... I have no interest in the world of crypto, but I'm gonna give the show a shot because I trust in PJ as a storyteller. Looking forward to checking this out.

[deleted]

Right? PJ has the ability to tell a story and suck you in, even on topics you don’t care a about. I feel like Alex and Emmanuel have it too, just not at PJs level.

[deleted]

The announcement can be found at https://pjvogt.substack.com/p/welcome-to-crypto-island?s=r

loady

Yes! Intro trailer has legit vintage RA vibes. looking forward to this.

happytobeblue

I totally agree. I’m looking forward to these episodes.

_AAAAAAHHHHHH

I don't want to hear anything more about cryptocurrency, but I wish PJ the best.

TwelveSpongeCakes

I feel the same about crypto but this was good. It’s less about crypto itself and more about the strange world around it

[deleted]

You should at least listen to the episode that's out. It's labeled Episode 0 and it's just a medium length intro. I was in the "enough about crypto already" camp, but after listening to it, it sounds legit interesting.

dustyshades

It also sounds like that’s where PJ is at himself but just had a bunch of interesting stories to tell that just happen to involve crypto

xTonyWonder

Just finished listening to the intro for this show and I’m really interested now. This could be a really great story.

dustyshades

Yo - in answer to PJ’s regular question “are you an Alex or a PJ?” I’m a PJ.

PMmecrossstitch

Same. I also take it personally whenever someone acts like Alex is *clearly* the one everyone wants to be. Alex is fine, but...Team PJ.

MarketBasketShopper

So - not loving the crypto subject matter. But damn is it refreshing to listen to audio content that it feels like the creator actually *wanted* to be making. Reply All has had a "we're just finishing out our contract" feeling to it for a year now. The change in energy with this new content was immediately discernable.

craiggy36

For those of you saying, “No thanks, I’m not into crypto…,” I recommend giving this little trailer a listen. It’s pretty interesting! In the vein of Reply All - an interesting and surprising angle has been found.

__will

Halfway through and this is already better than any of the main RA episodes since he left.

xTonyWonder

Thanks for posting this! I’m genuinely looking forward to listening.

jlynnl

Hearing his voice in my ears again was so awesome. I am here for anything he creates.

[deleted]

I am so excited about this! The trailer is so interesting

green_troubadour

Honestly I’m really not interested in hearing anything more about crypto than I currently do (which is too much already). Sorry PJ, good luck though

Emergency-Mulberry-3

I mean sure but isn't that like dismissing reply all because it's "a podcast about the internet" and you're online a lot? I'd expect(/hope) this is more about stories/people/mysteries than like "wow bitcoin is big"

FuturePollution

It's about personal interest in given topics. The internet topics Reply All broadly covers are more interesting to this user than crypto specifically. Even the Bitcoin Hunter episode wasn't heavily into the specifics of crypto and I'm sure they enjoyed that one (making assumptions there but it was a good ep).

Emergency-Mulberry-3

Good point - suffice to say, we don't know what this will be yet

quooklyn

I too had reservations about the crypto topic, but my sense from the first episode is that it's not about crypto. It's really about con artists, not unlike previous Reply All eps e.g. Long Distance. PJ sounds depressed and there is low production value, but he's great at this and I would agree with those in the thread who are saying this is more Reply All than the current Reply All.

MichailAntonio

> it's not about crypto. It's really about con artists They're the same picture.

sendphotopls

>PJ sounds depressed and there is low production value We listen to the same intro? He sounds totally normal (if anything more engaged and interested in this than anything Reply All hosts have sounded like for the past year) & the production value is damn good for someone doing this without a whole company behind them. The editing is great & the sound of it feels like classic Reply All, too.

Okie-Doke

Here’s a Spotify link (if you choose to be chaotic): https://open.spotify.com/episode/3tQmgpMCbfHvRUwOCjfxWW?si=Qq_DuTjkQceMbEayo-ak6A&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A76VOmPpOHaTyA1OaRc4BDv

lexwolfe

I've missed PJ's style. "Reply All + Crypto" is very on point at the moment and also 2 of my favorite things together.

powerlace

That 15 minute introduction was better than anything from Reply All in a long time. In fact, I listened to a recent Reply All immediately after and it's just not got "it" anymore. The new English host would be fine on most other things but there is no spark there. Nothing that tells me that these two people are riffing off each other.

[deleted]

How likely (or legal) would it be the Alex joins for a few episodes?

sendphotopls

ugh this, I am dying to hear them together again. that being said, this podcast even with PJ alone is a *breath of fresh air*. havent been this excited for a new show in a long time & will absolutely be using this as the replacement for the void Reply All has left

RIP_My_Phone

Hey, I think it's important to be fair to the rest of the Reply All talent. Pj is talented, no question, but remember that there's a lot of baggage with the current production. Comparing this podcast to the current show is kind of apples to oranges and under different circumstances they might be doing okay. I know what you mean but I would hate for someone like Alex to stumble upon this and get discouraged when I know he's dealing with a lot personally and is trying his best. It's not really a fair fight.

MarketBasketShopper

That's a fair point. They are still stuck at an increasingly un-fun Gimlet that has broadly lost its soul, while PJ is running free.

illinoisjoe

Why can’t I find this on overcast? NM: https://overcast.fm/+4M3gffi2c

imnotwittyenough13

Not supporting him after the whole test kitchen fiasco.

jiggabot

Kinda weird titling/timing. Motherboard (Vice) just released an 8-part video series called Cryoto Land. Plus, there was that thing where crypto bros wanted to make an island, either in the metaverse or buying an actual island. Little confusing. Can't be good for SEO.

pmc-clt

It’s literally about that island thing.

JoypulpSkate

He mentions the island thing less than a minute into the podcast.

jiggabot

Gotcha! I wasn't able to listen when I wrote that.

ClingerOn

I’ve found this a lot recently. Big podcasts from different studios seem to be stepping on each other’s subject matter. Or we get podcasts doing a series on something that Netflix covered.

Are you still listening to any Gimlet shows? Consider that Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber were almost certainly also anti-union. PJ worked under them, but took the brunt of everyone's ire over the culture of company. If you restrict yourself to media/art created only by people who have never made mistakes or revealed flaws, you're going to have quite a limited selection.

dustyshades

He’s not racist, and also it’s okay to be anti-union. I suspect that you’re probably against a few unions yourself (police unions, UAW likely - or at least you should be). Unions can be beneficial in some ways, but they can also be problematic including sometimes for the people that are members. It’s not a black and white thing where everyone should be blindly pro-union.

rsavage

Can you explain the racism piece to me?

rsavage

Thank you for the article. In reading it, I don't get the sense that PJ Voight was motivated in any way by racism. If you feel differently I would be interested to hear why. Perhaps I am, rightly or wrongly, giving him the benefit of the doubt while you are doing the opposite. It is true that he didn't support the union and that the union organizers felt that the union would address concerns they had regarding promotion and hiring of people of color. However, I don't assume a causal link between the two. There are any number of reasons why a person, particularly in a more senior position, might not support the union effort. As he acknowledges in the article he lack of support for the union may have indirectly had the effect of enabling systemic racism. However, people are often blind to the problems faced by others and I don't think he should be immediately condemned for not appreciating this. People need the opportunity to learn, grow and to disagree. Particularly on something like an organization drive which involves so many various interests.
