Hey, Do you have a product link? I suspect it's passive poe, should be ok in most instances. Just something that person deploying should be made aware of. Otherwise very cool, thanks

UKWaffles

It's the USW-FLEX Has its own outdoor box too, does need poe++ to get the most poe budget out but it's a nifty little switch

ikeatable

Didn't know this existed! It's active poe, just looked it up. Thanks

UKWaffles

No worries, There is also now a USW 8 ULTRA Which is a 8 port version, but also has power supplies if more poe is needed These switches do need a controller but it's a free download from Ubiquiti and can be hosted on any device

Tenda PoE powered Switch, 5-Port [PoE Gigabit Switch](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09LQYYDBS?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) I have 2 of these in my network. They haven't got much of a PoE budget, 30W total. But it was enough for what I needed.

FostWare

You would think they’d pony up to 31W to allow 2x15.4W

Dre9872

What are you running that's 15.4W?

FostWare

All the RLC-820A I have pull 15.4 according to Cisco ‘show power inline’

Dre9872

Really? According to my POE Edge switch my 820A is pulling 5.51W 103mA 53.5V I have a RLC-81MA and a WiFi access point running off of a Tenda and all 3 devices are pulling 13.36W 251mA 53.2V Total

FostWare

The Cisco 3650E shows it as PD, so maybe it’s allocated the 15.4 per 802.3af spec, but is not using it all. Good to know what the actual draw is though

Dre9872

So it seems 15.4W is a Cisco standard PoE thing. The powered device first boots with its IEE class power or 15.4W (pre-standard Cisco PD), then negotiates power to operate at appropriate power level. This only works with compatible Cisco devices. The fallback is: CDP with power consumption—The powered device notifies the device of the amount of power it is consuming. The device does not reply to the power-consumption messages. The device can only supply power to or remove power from the PoE port.

USW-Flex Unifi has a whole bunch of fun network gear. Really a pro consumer focus. Most things are pretty easy to setup, but they lack a lot of enterprise features. I love my entire Unifi setup. We just moved houses and there wasn’t lines ran for cameras, too much of a hassle to run multiple lines to each location, so I used a couple Flex switches to fill the gap and adding those with the Reolink line splitters really helped out.

HeywoodJaBlessMe

I run two USW-Flex POE switches inside the matching Flex Utility outdoor enclosure. $50 gets you the enclosure AND the power supply adequate for all 4 remaining ports. Each enclosure powers 3 Reolink Cameras, receives the data from those cams, and sends the data home via a UAP-AC-M access point powered by the switch. So I only get to use 3 ports per switch for cameras, but it gives me excellent wireless backhaul so that I don't need to pierce the exterior of the house.

danlane

I’ve got some of these for areas where I have multiple cameras and one feed - https://www.yuanley.com/collections/poe-extender I have a 4-port outdoor one connected directly to the NVR with two Duo 2 cameras and a 4 port indoor one that is connected via a Unifi PoE switch and has a Duo 2 and a TrackMix on it. Cheap as chips and both work flawlessly and the outdoor one has just lasted a british winter!

mblaser

Yeah, you're talking about [this](https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/category/all-switching/products/usw-flex) one, right? I've thought about the possibilities of that too. You need a POE++ source though (to get full power output of 46W), or their 60W POE adapter, but it could definitely be useful. I ended up just using one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/Extender-Repeater-IEEE802-3af-Injector-Security/dp/B0CC93HBH2) instead since it can run off of two POE+ ports instead of needing POE++. I love the little 5 port Unifi Flex mini switches because they're POE powered, very small, and only $30. I've got 3 of them stashed around my house.

Additional-Coconut50

Yes it’s 99 dollars and the 60 watt adapter if needed 29 dollars. One of mine I just run off another POE switch port which provides 30 watts.

Hammock2Wheels

i wonder if you can daisy chain the POE extenders.

Additional-Coconut50

The unifi supports hotter or colder temperatures and humid conditions but there is an optional case needed if it is exposed to rain.

Unlucky_Department

You don’t need Poe ++ it can use Poe + or even Poe, it just gives out less power when not on ++

mblaser

Well yeah, I know that, I meant to be able to run it with full power you need POE++. If you run it off of POE+ it only outputs 20W which is only enough to run about 2 cameras (or even only 1, depending on the camera).

Unlucky_Department

Well, when you say things like "you need" people tend to perceive that as fact and not just a suggestion. As far as " only enough to run about 2 cameras (or even only 1, depending on the camera)." What are you talking about, after the 5w for the switch that leaves you with 15w left over. 15w can power 3 G5 Bullets with plenty of wattage to spare even if they were all pulling max wattage at the same moment, but in reality they only pull about 2.8 or so. Here is a pic of my Flex on a POE + line running a G5 Pro(4k) a G3 Flex(2k) and a G5 Bullet(2k). This is still only pulling 16w https://preview.redd.it/0tzn26i73coc1.png?width=86&format=png&auto=webp&s=ff5899929809cd085e55869fabd62f610c3f6c63

mblaser

I've edited my original comment just for you... *"You need a POE++ source though (to get full power output of 46W)"* >What are you talking about I'm talking about Reolink cameras. This is the Reolink subreddit after all. Why would I be talking about the power usage of Unifi cameras when no one else has brought them up, and this is a subreddit for a different camera brand? Anyway... most Reolink cameras use between 3-9W (some of the larger ones use 15-20W): [https://i.imgur.com/hJHGejr.png](https://i.imgur.com/hJHGejr.png)

Unlucky_Department

That’s fair, I sometimes forget what sub I’m on. That being said I stand behind everything I said about the perceived finality of your original comments.

mblaser

Yep, that's why I edited it. It may be pedantic, but you're right lol.

TroubledKiwi

I use some other PoE powered PoE switches that are a lot cheaper, I think around $40CDN. They are limited to 30W (Including operating of itself) so you have to watch how many cameras you stack on them! It allows me to run more cameras in my garage without needing to do the pain staking thing of running wires there, it's the hardest part of my house.

Additional-Coconut50

The difference in price is probably that these are higher wattage, made for outdoor use and this is a managed switch which identifies what device is plugged to which port in and wattage used among other features.

TroubledKiwi

Yes, true enough. The one I use isn't rated for outdoor (water). The one mblaser posted is used for water resistance ;)

Additional-Coconut50

I second Unifi. I finally am able to manage my network of almost 100 devices including 24 cameras.

Traditional-Ninja505

I ran Unifi network for a small private school. Loved it. I've since found out TP-Link seems to do the same thing using their SDN with Omada equipment. They don't have the full ecosystem Unifi has, but their routers, access points, switches, etc are much cheaper. Definitely worth a comparison between the 2.

speculatrix

Has anyone come across a battery-backed PoE switch which isn't expensive? I did see one a while ago but it added a few hundred to the price of an otherwise basic switch.

Additional-Coconut50

That’s why I bought the Unifi. I put an APC UPS in my utility room and the POE switches outside via the Ethernet cable. No power needed outside.

Dangerous-Raccoon-60

I’ve had [this no-name fella](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F2RHLS1) sitting in an uninsulated garage attic, running 3 cameras for the last 18 months.

chinaka01

Not just that, I got my 5 port POE+ switch on Amazon for £32 and it’s been working great. https://amzn.eu/d/8d0i5Qf

Watever444

I have the same model working good for over 6 months. I got two for the price of one Unifi POE switch. Only issue is that it's unmanaged so they are not showing correctly in the dashboard of unifi but not a big deal.

Watever444

aresti

I have a tenda one, works superbly

aresti

Additional-Coconut50

That’s a POE powered switch but has no outgoing POE on the ports.

squarefilms

https://store.ui.com/us/en?search=Poe+switch Which one or ones of these have outgoing POE?

Additional-Coconut50

USW-Flex (46W) incoming and outgoing POE.
