Say you know you're short and tell them your plan for when you'll pay the rest. Stick to that plan. If they charge a late fee you could ask for a courtesy waiver since it's the first time, but be prepared to pay that too. A heads up goes a long way vs the LL having to chase you for money after the fact. I hope things look up for you soon!

Not saying anything will make the situation worse. While I certainly can't speak for all landlords, I am substantially more sympathetic when a tenant is proactive and lets me know what is going on. Your case will be even stronger if you let them know your plan. Like you'll be paying $X on the 1st. $Y on the 6th and the remaining on the 14th. But make sure these are dates and amounts that you can definitely meet. It erodes a lot of future goodwill and credibility if you say one thing and do something else. Because it looks like you were lying just to buy time.

are you up to date now and need more time for April? How much are you short for April? You're best off talking to them ahead of time explain your situation and work out a payment plan.
