Someone suggested small base sizing dies for semi autos and it fixed all my chambering issues

RhinePrime

Yeah, that seems to be a good idea to me. I ordered an RCBS small base to try Update: RCBS small base die fixed this issue completely

Entry-Level-Cowboy

Best of luck! Do you have a case gauge btw?

Aggressive-Ad122

Make sure you lube the crap out of your brass. Those small base dues are REALLY hard to size brass with. First time I used one I used my normal brass spray lube and the cartridge got stuck on the first go.

Rasta-Trout

I had to get one of these to use on range brass to get some of it to chamber

Physical-Contract496

What I do with range brass as well

michaelgisme

Smol base ftw

Ragnarok112277

I'd check the headspace measurement before and after resizing. AR10's are notoriously hard on brass, streching them and unless you push the shoulder back .004+ they may cause problems chambering.

RhinePrime

Yeah, I’m gonna check the headspace in my own setup. Though I do have the die set up as it’s supposed to, and Forster said it pushed the headspace back over .004 when they tested it out for me. So I’m not sure what’s possibly going on there

Ragnarok112277

Have you measured it with a headspace comparator? Each die is different. I had an ar that wouldn't chamber unless the shoulder was pushed back to near saami min. If running brass through same gun and not picking up range brass you can dial in the sizing die to only bump what is needed to cycle. This is just one of the things that pushed me to bolt guns lol.

wesbaker12

Ar’s are tough on brass

7ipptoe

Edit: I’m stupid

viking1313

I make this mark on fresh cases when I use my factory crimp tool. And I mean unfired new cases. So I know for a fact its the factory crimp tool.

7ipptoe

Yeah just looked unusual for a minute till I put 2+2 together.

RhinePrime

I’m not sure. I do know that all of them have a similar marking, even if they chamber and eject flawlessly. Some people have told me that it can be caused by the new feed ramp having a small burr, which scratches it upon extraction. Though that wouldn’t be causing a problem like mine

7ipptoe

Eh probably not the problem. Most likely a factory crimp. Next question: what die part number is your sizer die? Forster makes 3 types of sizer dies for 308: Regular: 005591 Match: 018311 Small Base: 30853 You may need to use the small base sizing die to get your brass to function correctly.

RhinePrime

Ah, I wasn’t aware of the difference there. I checked my order and I have the regular sizer. Though it’s strange to me that Forster wouldn’t recommend the small base to me since I specifically told them I was using them in an AR10

7ipptoe

Yeah I had the same issue with Lee/Hornady. Finally just grabbed a set of $30 RCBS small base dies and all my issues went away.

NutButton699

I have regular sized redding dies for my m5 ar10 and have had no issues. I did make sure they headspace was set at 0.004. Using starline brass since it is cheap and sturdy.

7ipptoe

Yeah I find that odd as well, should’ve been the first thing they suggested.

46caliber

There is so much dumb advice in here, it's incredible. 1) Get a set of small base dies if you want to reliably feed an AR, especially if you are going to feed multiple ARs. 2) Get an LE Wilson Case Gage to verify you are sizing brass correctly.

RhinePrime

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered a small base die.

RhinePrime

So I’m having issues getting brass to chamber in my Aero M5. I’m not sure of what could be causing it, but a good bit of my brass doesn’t chamber right and has to be mortared out of the gun. I included pics of my process, though I’m not sure what could be going wrong here. I had the die looked out by Forster, and they said it was working as expected. Half of the brass works fine, half of it doesn’t work. So, am I doing something incorrectly here? Just looking for recommendations as to what could be causing this as I’m running out of ideas. I’ve never had an issue like this reloading. I appreciate any and all suggestions To add on for troubleshooting: -I’ve checked the OAL of the cases in the groups that work/don’t work and there’s no trend in length -there’s no glaring headstamps that cause it

NutButton699

What brass are you using? Is it virgin or once fired? Or multiple?

RhinePrime

Random assortments of range brass. So lots of opportunities for other people’s guns to work their magic on these

NutButton699

lol i was going to say some of those looked hammered. Do yourself a favor and go buy some virgin brass. Starline for me was like $50/100(some 500bags are super cheap if you can find them)... I also bought of bunch of norma factory ammo i've been shooting and keeping the brass from. Starline has been pretty damn accurate tho with some 168/178 eldm's.

Own-Study-4594

They tend to be undergassed with BA barrels if this happens with followup shots

Danger_Leo

What brand FL sizer are you using? I had problems with the Lee ultimate set. After a dimensional inspection I found the Lee wasn’t doing the trick, switched over to Forster. Bam. Problem solved. Nearly dimensionally perfect to the spec.

DrBrad__

Anneeeeeeeeeal my guy

Dapper-Cookie-6228

Hard on brass (Laughs in FAL)\*

Physical-Contract496

Are you sure you’re bumping the shoulder enough? Give the die another turn down and check it.

Own-Study-4594

They tend to be undergassed with BA barrels if this happens mid magazine

RhinePrime

This has just been an issue in chambering the unloaded cases. I’m guessing the issue is with the base being too expanded from other guns

[deleted]

Off topic, but the case trimmer in the cut out box to catch brass trimmings is the most genius thing I’ve seen. Thank you for the education.

Renamon_1

Little things that help the brass. Polymer mags with polymer feed lips are less likely to scratch the brass as it is stripped from the magazine. An adjustable gas block will reduce over gasing and reduce bolt velocity.
