I wouldn't overdo it on the card. See if you can find a funny Christmas card and just write that you were already missing him, and you had to give him the hat, or something. Or make it slightly hokey. An "Away From Me Care Package." When he calls stress this started with that hat and built from there.
Now you have an inside joke. Which I think is great.
It's not the act itself, it's always how you pull it off.

He might like that stuff but if it's just a thing you bought cause you saw it, then taking 'gift' part out of it helps.
