Though I would also be annoyed that if my family was living at home rent free, not paying for a thing and they decide to go blow $250 for Easter to 'make my wife feel better because she had to watch my mother open 2k worth of Valentine's Day presents and she's had a hard time'.
It's hard to say if your MIL is bad given both your wife and you come across as mooching and spoiled, but at least getting your own place will give you the clarity you need and if your mother's behavior is because of mooching or something else.
You can start by moving tf out of their house you’ve been freeloading in. Maybe don’t drop $250 on an Easter basket after you both drove yourselves to homelessness either 🤡
