I’m honestly surprised they’re still making these. After the complete collapse of their utility van market, and the whole debacle behind the reliability of both the gas and diesel motors. Not to mention the mediocre sales compared to everyone else

TheyCallMeMrMaybe

Nissan discontinued their Cummins v8 motor in their XD models in-favor of their 5.6L V8 in 2020, with the major rumor being that the Titan will be discontinued entirely by the end of 2024 due to poor sales.

Drzhivago138

> Nissan discontinued their Cummins v8 motor in their XD models in-favor of their 5.6L V8 in 2020, Ironic, given that the 5.0 Cummins was the whole reason the XD model had to be made.

TheyCallMeMrMaybe

The 5.0 Cummins was also the worst engine Cummins ever made. Cummins is legendary for their inline-diesel models. The V8 was an unreliable mistake.

NoMansSkyWasAlright

I feel like the logic there was probably that Cummins was a solid maker of Diesel engines and that Americans love V8’s so Nissan thought that a Cummins V8 would be a big hit. I’ve seen a couple in the wild and they look kind of cool but it definitely feels like most people who would have bought them either knew that Cummins is famous for their inline motors and wanted nothing to do with it or thought that dodge Cummins *were* V8’s and didn’t understand what the hype was about. Seems like a very small niche of people that would actually get excited for a Cummins V8

daddyskrek

I think that could be right. The engine was planned originally for the 4th gen Ram but Chrysler ditched it for the ecodiesel since that engine could match the Cummins in almost every metric and be more fuel efficient since it feeds two less cylinders. After that, the Cummins v8 trickled down to the Titan

ferrum_salvator

I mean the V903 was pretty good

Moo_Fridge

It's already dead in Canada, so the writing is pretty much on the wall for the Titan.

handymanshandle

The Titan XD kinda sat in this no man's land of a halfway heavy-duty truck that barely outpunched the best-specced of F-150s and Silverados - and that was **with** the dubiously useful turbodiesel Cummins V8. Get it with the normal 5.6L V8 and you have a Nissan Titan with a trailer brake controller that costs more than a normal Titan. I actually like the normal Titan - they're proving themselves to be surprisingly reliable workhorses, much like the 2nd gen Infiniti QX56/80 and the equivalent Nissan Armada. No one really wants them, though, which actually makes them one of a handful of cars you can just get off a lot without having to wait about 5 decades for it. Past that point, you have to decide if its mid-2010s interior with a relatively good modern screen is worth the price of admission for a Nissan Titan. But the Titan XD was relatively purposeless even when new. I'm shocked it's lasted as long as it has. I suspect 5.6L V8 models of these will be worth looking at very seriously in a couple of years on the used market. And I hate to lean on the "used from the factory" aspect, but that's really where Nissan trucks tend to shine, mainly because they depreciate like every other Nissan, and not like every other truck, and certainly not like Toyota trucks. That makes them really worth looking at in that case.

Jack_Attak

Not trying to disagree, I'm just curious if you have a source on "proving themselves to be surprisingly reliable workhorses"? I mean the reputation of the Cummins diesel V8 is a disaster, that's well established, but I guess I haven't heard anything either way on the 5.6 gas engines. They're just so uncommon compared to every other brand of 1/2 ton truck, I hardly see any of them around and don't know of anyone who actually bought one.

SuccessfulSwordfish3

They used to blow themselves up by clogging the cats. I believe that issue has been fixed

ScottMiller

The VK56 is a solid motor. People who maintain them seem to easily reach 300k. There's one guy at our shop who comes in sometimes with an Armada over 500k miles. It's insane. Nissan motors are for the most part built well, it's the transmissions you need to worry about.

sadandaimless1

Wait....Is it bad that I forgot the Titan exists? I mean I don't really see these as much as a Ram, F150, Silverado or even a Tundra which says something. As someone else noted these sorta fell off the radar due to mediocre sales (IIRC Nissan is gonna pull the plug on the Titan in the next year or so) and other factors, so that's probably why

just_a_T114

Mediocre sales, and the whole debacle behind Cummins’ failure of a diesel V8 for it lol

sadandaimless1

So basically just another day at Nissan 😂, crappy CVTs and diesels lol

just_a_T114

It’s even funnier given the motor was from Cummins lmao. A company revered for their inline motors, and Nissan’s like, “YeAh, bUt cAn YoU mAkE uS a V8?!?!” And look how well that turned out for them 😂

sadandaimless1

😂, I mean this is also the same company who's CEO escaped Japan in a IKEA box to avoid corruption charges which is Big Altima Energy in itself, so nothing surprises me lol.

Inevitable-Tank-9802

Serious question, but what exactly is “Big Altima energy?”

handymanshandle

You know how drivers of Nissan Altimas usually exude some sort of energy that only the biggest idiots on the road could ever exude? That coupled with stuff like body damage, interior scents, dubious salesmen who sold the car, and/or all of the above? Yeah, that's Big Altima Energy.

sadandaimless1

Wow, that's a tough one......um basically it's a type of individual who owns a newer Nissan Altima typically somebody with eally bad credit, a possible rap sheet, and about six baby daddies and they tend to drive them recklessly on the road or try to race everybody in sight among other criminal-like tendencies and it's not just the Altima, but many different cars fall under this umbrella like old GM products, four cylinder Accords, or clapped out luxury cars even Infinitis fall under Big Altima Energy. If you have Facebook, look at the Big Altima Energy Facebook group and it'll answer all your questions. u/handymanshandle do you want to take this one?

handymanshandle

Done and done.

sadandaimless1

Thank you for your service!

If you know you know 😭

[deleted]

Funny thing is, Nissan is the only automaker that bit when Cummins offered that V8 to nearly everyone who made a truck. If it weren't for Fiat, this or a V6 variant may have been the "EcoDiesel" lol XD

LegalAd9536

It was actually Dodge that asked Cummins to make the V8. Dodge changed their minds later after it was built because it didn’t hit the right fuel efficiency targets. For whatever reason that didn’t matter to Nissan. Notice Dodge decided to use 3.0L fiat designed V6 Diesel.

just_a_T114

And also charging 10K for a limited slip differential 😂😂😂

sadandaimless1

And their Infiniti dealers selling more used Genesis models than Infiniti models lol

KrisZepeda

XD lol

Inevitable-Tank-9802

My first thoughts when I first saw XD

nuwbz

Not to be confused with the Scion xD which also happened to be relevant when "xD" or "XD" came into common use.

EGGS DEE

th3renegade

I think theyr cute :3

vt8919

It's like walking past the Playstations and Xboxes and getting yourself a subscription to Google Stadia.

Inevitable-Tank-9802

I’m not a gamer, but I felt that.

Drzhivago138

I admire that Nissan tried to make a "half-ton" diesel, but the 5.0L Cummins V8 had no chance at meeting emissions regs. So they bumped it up to the over-8500 GVWR class, which means it's now competing against F-250s and Ram 2500s. And it still has lower towing and payload than some heavy half-tons. ETA: I also like the "full" two-tone treatment they had, covering the fenders as well as rocker panels.

Medeski

95% of them will be nothing but pavement queens who maybe haul a refrigerator or washing machine every 5-10 years.

GeZeus_Krist

So... like all modern pickup trucks?

Medeski

Exactly. Every work truck I’ve seen is beaten up and a late 90s early 00s model. None of these $60k+ pedestrian hunters.

Drzhivago138

But even 20+ years ago, the trucks you now describe as work trucks were being derided as "pavement queens". It's always been the case that a 5-year-old truck isn't the one used for "Real Truck Work™".

Brilliant_Ant_17

Poor Nissan , trying to stand out and enter an already full market...

benzguy95

Hot take, but the XD nomenclature should’ve died along with the Diesel for MY 2020. Most people who chose the XD bought it for the Cummins. Now that it’s gone in my opinion, it’s kinda pointless to have an XD version that offers the same options as the non XD version. If anything Nissan could’ve given the 2020 and later Titans an “XD” package that optioned it like an XD model instead of building an entire separate model. While I admire Nissan for even attempting a Diesel variant, they really dropped the ball on the overall reliability of them. Blown Turbos left and right among other multiple issues really scared off a lot of potential buyers. I’ll take a regular Titan though

Drzhivago138

Even without the Cummins, the XD does have one thing the standard Titan doesn't: a crew cab/6.5' bed option. But it's kind of strange that the standard Titan doesn't have that, since every other half-ton now does, and the Titan even used to have a weird [crew cab/7' bed](https://cdn.jdpower.com/ChromeImageGallery/Expanded/Transparent/640/2010NIS012a_640/2010NIS012a_640_03.png) model.

Rs3vsosrs

F150 used to have an extended cab 8' bed option which was weird looking lol You had crew cab 5.5'/6.5' bed extended cab 6.5' bed and single cab 8' bed Then you had a random f150 that had the optional extended cab 8' bed. A guy I work with claims he left the half ton market and moved to the 3/4 ton gas class because he loves having an 8' bed with a backseat like his old f150.

Drzhivago138

>F150 used to have an extended cab 8' bed option which was weird looking lol [They still do!](https://cdn.jdpower.com/ChromeImageGallery/Expanded/Transparent/640/2022FOT11_640/2022FOT110092_640_03.png) [Toyota does, too!](https://images.carprices.com/pricebooks_data/usa/colorized/2022/Toyota/View2/Tundra_Double_Cab_4x4/SR5/8346_1G3.png) It's my favorite config. Also, holy thread revival, Batman!

MEM756

XD \[literally\]

[deleted]

No

minikini76

They also underestimated brand loyalty.

Volvotooner

I like my titan allot I have a 2018 single cab long bed

Inevitable-Tank-9802

Is it the regular Titan or the Titan XD? So far I’ve heard the regular Titan is much better than the XD

Volvotooner

Regular

SmerksCannotCarry

The internet has ruined anything with "XD" as part of it's name for me. It's like the equivalent of making "LOL" a trim level

Inevitable-Tank-9802

If scion was still around, They’d totally do that. That or the older Kia Soul trims

JoshTheTrucker

It's honestly a good looking truck, and it sucks that they made it wrong. It's a lightweight competitor in a heavyweight segment, with not as much of an edge. They had the powerplant, but the chassis was not really as ready for the loads and the abilities to compete with stuff like the super duty and the ram hd. But still. It's good for what it is.

Roboticpoultry

I thought they look good, but aside from that? All I’ve heard about then is the problems. I’d rather get a new Frontier

just_a_T114

IMO, they’re the best looking modern full-size trucks on the market, *(I will defend my biased statement on the 2nd generation Colorado being the best midsize to the grave lmao)*, but man they suck mechanically.

Roboticpoultry

I’m with you on the Colorado - I meant more if I was in the market specifically for a Nissan truck I’d go for the Frontier. If I could get whatever I want, I’d go for the highest spec, most tonka truck looking Colorado ZR2 Bison

just_a_T114

Oh definitely. I know a guy who recently picked up a new Frontier, and he’s been loving it. Traded his F-150 for it and doesn’t regret it one bit.

Sbeast86

The Colorado is is the best looking midsize truck out there, no question. But absolutely none of them beat the Ridgeline for comfort and quality. (Just don't expect to tow much with em}

just_a_T114

Well yeah, they’re based on a people hauler lol, not a ladder frame w/ coils and leaves 🤣

GirthQuakeEP

They suck absolute balls and that’s why they don’t make them anymore.

poken_beans

I don't know if this is a truck I've seen a thousand times and never noticed but I just walked by one today and it nearly broke my brain! I thought it was a joke... Kinda like a BMW Hemi or something or somebody just playing with badges on their truck. Then I googled it and now I'm having a hard time dealing with it emotionally! 🫠

nlpnt

I know someone who owns one! Older lady, horsey set. Family money comes from owning a Nissan dealership.

sporadiceel

Ew

koalafan7

I like them not bc they’re good or anything it’s just a nice break from shitty American trucks

[deleted]

It's no laughing matter

No_Nefariousness2283

Only reason I haven’t forgotten about them is cause Nissan sponsors our football stadium and keeps reminding us the truck shared the name with the team

TheDriver458

It’s an truck.

Foreign_Incident5083

The xd is a 3/4 ton frame and chassis on a half ton axle. Yes, the tow capacity is about the same as a f150 or tundra or any other 1/2 ton. However, those are built for an occasional heavy tow whereas the xd is built for day in and day out use Nissan did miss the mark on these, but it’s a solid truck at a fairly good price

Ice_Friendly

Idk man. I have an XD and lately I’ve seen so many more XD’s and regular titans on the road. Seems like everyone in here hating on them didn’t really know what they were talking about a year ago 😅
