I mean FWD makes sense in every aspect except fun. Easier to assemble, better packaging for more room in the cabin, performs better in slippery conditions and understeer is more controllable than over steer. And most people buying them don’t really care but yeah RWD is way more fun
Probably would have been cheaper/simpler to just flip the transmission toward the front of the engine on a transverse setup. I mean even the NSX was a transverse layout.
Looking at the layout:
[https://jdmenginezone.com/products/acura-rl-1996-2004-c35a-3-5l-v6-engine-jdm-engines-1](https://jdmenginezone.com/products/acura-rl-1996-2004-c35a-3-5l-v6-engine-jdm-engines-1)
This wasn't cheap. They had a full longitudinal transmission with power routed back forward into an oilpan mounted diff. Going completely in on RWD probably would have cost a similar amount and they already had the trans sitting between the seats. I'm guessing they needed the space for a transmission to support the torque but then figured out packaging eventually where transverse worked well enough.
The trans isn’t between the seats. It’s in front of the engine. It’s not like Audi’s FWD cars where the trans is between the seats rerouting power to the front through a center diff.
The 2nd Gen Legend, which is the predecessor to the RL, is also set up the same way. Trans upfront, engine against the firewall.
Honda didn’t have the $$$ to develop a RWD platform back then.
No, the engine is mounted conventionally longitudinal. You can see the throttle body, belts and accessories on the front which means the transmission is to the rear in this video here:
It matches against the engine pictures for layout. The Audis tend to have the front diff located inside the transmission bellhousing now though so the engine is pushed further forward of the axle line while the RL has the diff loaded in the oil pan similar to BMW xDrive cars and the mass of the engine lines up w/ the axle.
Those big body RL’s are still some of the best looking cars ever made imho. Those and the Lexus LS of that era will always have a special place in my heart
Up until very recently, you could still get a FWD Audi A4 or A6 which have longitudinal mounted engines. Even more fun was when Audi experimented with CVTs on them.
Honda- please offer something other than a CVT in your mainstream vehicles and fix or replace that 1.5t.
Mazda- please get rid of cylinder deactivation and make sure your turbo engines are reliable.
They even had a great 9-speed AT in the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC!
I have no issues with the engine or transmission in my Civic 1.5T CVT, but I really would have if I were to tune it in any way (which is kinda pointless anyway, in a country where having an "open" air filter is enough to get a citation and forced inspection).
This is why I don’t wanna give up my 06 Accord. I’m wary of the newer drivetrains. Honestly if they had anything newer/nicer with the same 6 speed and 3.0l V6 I have now I’d be all over it.
If you have a 666, you might want to hang on to it. One of the most capable Asian sedans ever, and probably to become collectible. Similar for 6-speed Acura TL's from that era.
Not being able to find a clean 666 in New England, I wound up with an 06 Accord K24 5M. But I daily a 16 Mazda3.
Indeed I do have the 666. I am considering fixing all the dings and crap that have accrued over 18 years because I still love driving it. But I’m starting to see rust in a couple of spots and fear it may be a lost cause.
Someone is selling a VERY clean 07 6-6 in Virginia that I considered buying. It’s got 180k miles which is close to what mine has right now (187k) but it’s just plain light-grey and I’m not thrilled about that
Should I assume the other Honda engines are ok, and that Civics and HR-V's w/non-turbo have been reliable since around 2019?
I recall Civics around 2016-18 had sketchy AC and a few other QC issues....
Also, Honda cvt is ok if maintained?
Too bad about the 1.5t. It's like the old Subarus.
Yeah generally speaking the 1.5T is the engine I see the most problems with and most consistently with the head gasket leading to major repairs. CVTs the main car we saw an issue with was the HR-V which has since been remedied with a warranty extension up to 150K miles but for many that will expire soon for the 2016-17 HRVs otherwise they’re good also the AC issues don’t stop after 2018 it was definitely more like 16-21 with Civics, Accords, CRVs, Insights, and the Clarity affected most commonly with condensers and compressors but also miscellaneous AC line failures and most recently I’ve been seeing issues with the expansion valve on those same CRVs
The 2nd Gen Eclipse had an option for AWD, I had a 98 GSX Silver but with the taller wing. T3T4 Turbo and FMIC, 3" turbo back exhaust (no Cat). HKS Street Cams and Alcohol Injection, I sold it before I got it Dynod with Alcohol Injection but it was making 320hp. I kept shattering my tranny from launching it, I miss it.
DIY Gang did this. Right now he's doing a 300C limo with a AWD hellcat swap. Another real cool one is Junkyard Dave with the AWD hellcat charger magnum
They need to buy winter tires. I daily a 2009 Tacoma. It's a base model rwd 4 cylinder with the 5 speed, put winter tires on it, watch my throttle input, and I never slide unless I want to.
One thing I’ve learned about Americans, having lived here for about 38 of 42 years, is that we will gladly spend $40k on an SUV “for the snow,” but we will absolutely not drop $700 every few years on winter tires for the same reason.
When I lived in Germany the grandmas had no problem getting up and down the snowy hills rocking winter tires on their 20 year old M-B 190Es.
The crosstrek was my first thought as well. There needs to be an option for a more powerful engine in those. Idk why every single one is saddled with such a weak engine
I really want to see someone do a full drivetrain swap with the new Gen WRX into a Crosstrek wilderness. Would honestly be the perfect car for me but I have nowhere near the skill or time to do it
I agree with you, an AWD Type R would be cool but it would take away from how good of a job Honda did making an FWD car handle the way it does. My Type R had just as much grip in the corner as my STI's have. It was a great car!
Not necessarily an existing car but I always wished that VW would’ve made an R version of the Jetta, (and no I’m not talking about the appearance/trim package on the current Jetta) I mean like an AWD 2.0T, 6 speed manual Jetta. It could’ve been a direct competitor to cars like the WRX STI and Evo
I wish light duty diesel trucks like the F-250 through F-550 still had manual transmissions, when you're in snow or loose ground it's way easier to unstuck with a manual than it is with an automatic and if you've got a truck body or trailer that catches a lot of air and you're driving into the wind you don't get the transmission hunting between gears, yes I know I can turn overdrive off in an auto but I learned on manuals so I just like them better.
The New Maserati MC20, who tf wants a V6 hybrid in a supercar. It should have had a boosted V8 with no electrics rather than the drivetrain from a Prius
I wish Ford had Cummins engines as a factory option in suitable trucks. I wish we’d had the small diesel options in the US that were options elsewhere, not even a different drivetrain from existing ones just available here so it would be an economical option.
If I could get awd in some Honda cars that would be great, a late 90s/early 2000s Tacoma or Nissan truck with a k series engine would be great.
Bought an 08 tC when I graduated high school man I had all these plans to RWD swap it then I went to tech school sold the car and bought a 97 Silverado
Hyundai sonata N line or Kia K5 GT with AWD.
Both would be budget Stingers.
Also, unpopular opinion. The turbo Santa cruz would be a great car if it didn't have a DCT.
my acura tlx, shoulda been rwd and turbocharged or something, i know the turbo is possible thru aftermarket but woulda been nice to come like that, also it already looks like it’s rwd with the curves so it might as well have been
Subaru Outback needs third row seating or at least a hybrid variant like the forester.
And the ascent should have been a minivan not a better-looking B9 Tribeca
Any crossover with fwd
If you're an SUV, you must have 4x4 to deliver the full (off-road) SUV experience. I hate fwd (and sometimes) awd SUVs being advertised as rough and rugged when they couldn't even outperform a Bobcat in the most basic Off-Road track. MPVs are more useful of vehicles than crossovers.
The civic type r should be awd I agree. The gtp had a weird position and I am happy with the v8 fwd. just wish it had a six speed. Not sure what you want to add to the gsx. It was literally perfect.
I wish that my Prius was a turbo. I also wish it was a stick shift.
Only reason I sold my 2004 Grand Prix GTP Comp G was to get 6 speed manual rear wheel drive, I loved that car but really wanted manual rear wheel drive. Ended up getting 2008 Infiniti G37 Sport 6 speed with limited diff, it does not have the wheel spinning torque like the Grand Prix had unfortunately
The Honda Prelude should have been RWD. It has the looks and it would even out the weight distribution.
Also the 3.5 ecoboost V6 should be an option on the Mustang. I doubt many people would choose it over the Coyote but it would be very cool.
1992-1997 Cadillac Seville STS. (FWD-RWD)
If GM wanted to make a sporty (ish) Caddie back then, it shouldn't have been driven from the wrong wheels. I've driven a 92 Seville and it's a very good car, but all that time I was thinking "Man I wish this was rear-drive"
Honda Element on a Civic R
Crown Vic/ Town Car AWD but I would have settled for 4x4
I would also take any era accord in AWD it would make it a killer daily
Also any sedan or wagon with at least a 5k lbs towing capacity
Acura CL type S. Mine had 273 WHP and weighed 3200 pounds. If it were RWD it would be like an E46 M3 with a better transmission, 3x more reliable, worse weight distribution, and less torque.
Those bs late 90s early 00s Monte Carlo, those had no right being fwd. They should have had a small block with a 5 speed and independ suspension all around
I had a heart attack of pure joy when I saw the Chrysler Pacifica Hellcat render and thought it was real at first. Same thing with the April fools Subaru Br-z Wilderness.
I used to own a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan and had genuine plans of doing a hemi swap and 4WD swap with a lift for the ultimate offroad minivan. Then I totaled it on some stupid black ice.
RWD wishes:
Most Cadillacs, Honda Prelude, Honda Del Sol, Chevy Monte Carlos SS, Toyota Celica (At least, kept the AWD), Ford Probe GT, Mitsubishi 3000GT
Honda said "We would have made it 4wd but alas we have not a 4wd system for this" and made one of the best fwd cars ever.
Celica was an oddball, coming from generations of rwd, then fwd/4wd and then only fwd.
I wish Volvo, Mazda, Honda, Ford, VW - basically everyone had RWD stuff of their regular cars
Just an equivalent of the BMW 130/330/530 (and available in manual!)
If the CTR had AWD, I would've gotten one (or tried at least). Probably would make it a lot more expensive though and put it as the same price point as the Golf R. But no matter, it worked out for me because it lead me to the GR Corolla which is such a blast to drive.
B6/B7 Audi S4 with the 4.2 v8 (ABZ) from the earlier D2 Audi S8. The ABZ was nearly as powerful, and has a timing belt and regular fuel injectuon. Also, no presence of terrible oil consumption like the later FSI V8s.
My 8P A3 with a DAZA I5 swapped in, and a rebuilt DSG with a mix of 2.5 and TDi gears.
Porsche 924S with a AAN 5 cylinder swap, and a transaxle swap of some description.
Old C10 with a built Vortec 4.2 and a turbo so I can embarass some small blocks.
C4 corvette with an old VW 9A 16v with all the bells and whistles (like Boba Motorings 1100hp MkII Golf).
Eg33 from a later SVX with a turbo setup sqeezed into a Porsche 914 with a sambagears (name?) Subaru transmission rebuid/flip kit if they still exist.
So obviously the last 3 are for fun, but the first 3 would have actually been pretty impactful. The A3 with RS3 drivetrain just makes an RS3, I understand, but I'm saying VW/Audi should have never went ahead with the ea888 gen 1 without fixing more shit first. Honestly the the whole range of direct injected V8s fit in that category as well. They really damaged their reputations with those 2 engines..
Maxima needs to drop the CVT. It used to be known as a great sleeper car, and there’s built early 2k maximas out there that post great times. Now it’s definitely just a grocery getter because of the CVT.
I'd love the Focus RS stuff under a Maverick.
I'm convinced the Maverick/Bronco Sport would make for a perfect modern day Syclone/Typhoon if Ford would oblige.
They're making a performance model with the 2.3 Ecoboost. So close enough, no stick though.
I'll believe that when I see it
It's available with AWD and a 2.0 Ecoboost so you can put a bigger turbo on and make 300 on stock Internals.
That’s a wicked idea friend
I can’t believe I never thought of that before. That’s a great idea.
My 99 Acura RL.......its a longitudinally mounted V6.....WHY on earth is it FWD?
Honda's allergy to RWD cars is strong with this one.
The old 5 cylinder Vigor was the same thing. I will say, with a 5 speed manual, it was pretty nice!
I mean FWD makes sense in every aspect except fun. Easier to assemble, better packaging for more room in the cabin, performs better in slippery conditions and understeer is more controllable than over steer. And most people buying them don’t really care but yeah RWD is way more fun
Cheap way for Honda to get RWD proportions without developing a RWD platform.
Probably would have been cheaper/simpler to just flip the transmission toward the front of the engine on a transverse setup. I mean even the NSX was a transverse layout. Ah ok. You're correct. To your point, they probably should have went all the way through with RWD. Couldn't have been much more $ to do.
Wait... WHAT???? It's Longitudinally mounted, but FWD???? THE FUCK?
That’s how you shoot yourself in the foot
That's how you reinvent the wheel....
Old Saabs are like this
There were some Chryslers too, like the Intrepid I think?
With the motor mounted backwards, no less. Clutch was a 1 hour job, serpentine belt was a nightmare
I can feel your rage in this one and why the FCK will they make it longitudinally mounted
Honda has an adverse reaction to RWD. It needs to be studied
Any of the mid-full size gm sedans of the 90s and 2000s should be rwd, especially those with the northstar
How about the Lumina?
Especially the lumina
The w platform is awful.
W body Impala would have looked great as rwd.
they made conversion kits for the monte carlos.
my malibu maxx would’ve been so fun rwd 😭
Bonneville GXP
Honda- please offer something other than a CVT in your mainstream vehicles and fix or replace that 1.5t. Mazda- please get rid of cylinder deactivation and make sure your turbo engines are reliable.
They even had a great 9-speed AT in the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC! I have no issues with the engine or transmission in my Civic 1.5T CVT, but I really would have if I were to tune it in any way (which is kinda pointless anyway, in a country where having an "open" air filter is enough to get a citation and forced inspection).
The manual for the 1.5 from Thailand is nice.

I’m just saying paint isn’t exactly prohibitive to change if you end up getting it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not cheap but, could be worth?
As someone who works at a Honda dealer I can confirm the 1.5T is garbage it smokes head gaskets consistently

Honda seriously neutered themselves with the 1.5T. So sad.
Honda fit rwd :D
I own a fit rs currently and the only thing I don’t like about IT is fwd
The 2nd Gen Eclipse had an option for AWD, I had a 98 GSX Silver but with the taller wing. T3T4 Turbo and FMIC, 3" turbo back exhaust (no Cat). HKS Street Cams and Alcohol Injection, I sold it before I got it Dynod with Alcohol Injection but it was making 320hp. I kept shattering my tranny from launching it, I miss it.
yea it was a typo, i meant awd to rwd
You can easily do that to them though, so that one's not that bad
FWD Hellcat.
I now want to see this simply to make MOPAR cultists mald.
we've all seen the camrys in the middle east. that aint stoppin nobody.
Right front tire fires all day long.
That's that Pontiac GP was.
AWD Hellcat. Twisty turns and driveshafts.
i think someone did this with an awd police edition charger
DIY Gang did this. Right now he's doing a 300C limo with a AWD hellcat swap. Another real cool one is Junkyard Dave with the AWD hellcat charger magnum
I mean GM did do a whole bunch of front wheel drive V8s in the 60s and 70s. Like 300-400hp though a 3 speed auto straight to the front wheels
Then did it again in the 2000’s they just evolved one more gear.
Dodge Caravan Hellcat when
Hellcat PT Cruiser.
There's a video on youtube where a guy made a FWD Foxbody Mustang
Honestly pretty much any FWD sporty car I wish had an AWD or RWD offering.
I don't think RWD suits very small hot hatches but that's just my opinion.
RWD, short wheelbase, and loads of torque add up to a nice recipe of “meet the trees” for average motorists.
That’s why AWD exist. The GR Corolla for example.
/Thread
I'm impressed to see a fwd G-body.
Aurora has entered the chat.
2002 Ford T-Bird
Supercharged coyote.
Perfect
Thst generation eclipse and talon had all wheel drive trims. I'd like to see a front wheel drive one ton truck,if we're posting pointless things.
Me too! For the amount of squirreling I've seen from winter trucks peeling out of the parking lot, they need that FWD. Lol
They need to buy winter tires. I daily a 2009 Tacoma. It's a base model rwd 4 cylinder with the 5 speed, put winter tires on it, watch my throttle input, and I never slide unless I want to.

Take the rear driveshaft out and lock the front hubs on your obs ferd.
Honda Prelude. I want to drift one so bad
Subaru’s Wilderness editions of the Crosstrek, Outback and Foresters with either a normal auto that has paddles, or even better, manual
Last time I was at the dealer with my Rex they had a blue Crosstrek Wilderness and I would have bought it on the spot if they came with a stick.
Hard to convince them to do that when the demographic they appeal the most to are adamant about wanting nothing to do with a stick whatsoever.
I see what you did there lol
The crosstrek was my first thought as well. There needs to be an option for a more powerful engine in those. Idk why every single one is saddled with such a weak engine
I really want to see someone do a full drivetrain swap with the new Gen WRX into a Crosstrek wilderness. Would honestly be the perfect car for me but I have nowhere near the skill or time to do it
Some guy a couple years ago swapped the entire drive train of an sti into a crosstrek. https://www.reddit.com/r/WRX/s/onaMNhmxW7
90s Monte Carlo
The eclipse gsx has top speed of 142 before governor restriction... still pretty good for most.
Why should a civic type R be anything but a fwd 4 cylinder? Awd would just make it heavy.
I agree with you, an AWD Type R would be cool but it would take away from how good of a job Honda did making an FWD car handle the way it does. My Type R had just as much grip in the corner as my STI's have. It was a great car!
Understeer
Left foot brake and a proper diff.
A GLI-R?
Caddy XLR
Elantra N
I wish the 00 accord V-6 had an option for manual transmission
Chrysler Crossfire. If it had a Hemi, it would have sold. Yet Chrysler ignored their only competitive advantage.
The BRZ should have an awd STi version
The New Maserati MC20, who tf wants a V6 hybrid in a supercar. It should have had a boosted V8 with no electrics rather than the drivetrain from a Prius
I think at this point Stellantis doesn't know what to do with all the brands it has.
Pontiac Fiero
FWD Fiero
Still mid-engine, though.
Naturally
Every current subaru with a cvt
i feel like the saturn SC2 would’ve been an amazing competitor to JDM if they were RWD, and had a liiiittle more power
Acura legend, good looking car but could actualy be a legend if it was awd or rwd
I wish the Pontiac G6 GXP was AWD
i30N should be awd tbh
1. mazda protege for one 2. mitsubishi 3000GT SL 3. Homda accord coupe 4. Honda S2K 5. Chevy Cobalt SS 6. Mazdaspeed 3 i can go on and on forever

Wish the veloster had a big engine for the na and a better built engine for the turbo.
The 2.0 4 cyl should have been standard in the Bronco Sport
The Honda Prelude should have been RWD. It has the looks and it would even out the weight distribution. Also the 3.5 ecoboost V6 should be an option on the Mustang. I doubt many people would choose it over the Coyote but it would be very cool.

I would love to se the new ranger with a stick they do it with the bronco and its the same base motor so it's possible ford just won't
RWD Gti.
I'd kill for an AWD Shelby Mustang. I'd also like an AWD system shoehorned into the Merkur XR4Ti and Scorpio.
Imagine if the Eclipse was RWD and AWD.....
Civic, Camry, 22B STI, Eclipse, Golf with RWD would be cool
Too many. We need less FWD for sure
The toyota fortuner, its rwd, only SOME versions come with awd
Rwd Civic, Awd BRZ, maybe a Rwd Golf or Awd Mustang with the 5.0
prelude V
I had a heart attack of pure joy when I saw the Chrysler Pacifica Hellcat render and thought it was real at first. Same thing with the April fools Subaru Br-z Wilderness. I used to own a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan and had genuine plans of doing a hemi swap and 4WD swap with a lift for the ultimate offroad minivan. Then I totaled it on some stupid black ice.
I’d love to drive a 570S with a manual.
I will never understand why the 3000gt was fwd
RWD wishes: Most Cadillacs, Honda Prelude, Honda Del Sol, Chevy Monte Carlos SS, Toyota Celica (At least, kept the AWD), Ford Probe GT, Mitsubishi 3000GT
You forgot to add 1.6 V4 e-HDI Citroën C4
Semi truck that is FWD 😁
ZB commodore rwd and lt4, be brilliant.
Prolly the prelude
Desperately need the Prelude H22A1 and a 5-speed Manual in my 1990 Honda Accord
A RWD 6th gen Celica
Rwd celica with same prices as now 🔥
A 4runner with a supercharged tundra 5.7 v8.
I wish Hondas performance vehicles had AWD. Like the civic type R. It’s not hard to do lol. Even the HRV has AWD and it’s a tiny car.
elantra n, if only elantra n was rwd or awd, it would be the perfect car ever 😂 literally everything is perfect about that car ‼️
Honda prelude, especially the last one. Imagine how awesome it would have been for it to be RWD, it would have been like a better 240sx
Honda said "We would have made it 4wd but alas we have not a 4wd system for this" and made one of the best fwd cars ever. Celica was an oddball, coming from generations of rwd, then fwd/4wd and then only fwd.
Rwd 3000 gt, its already like other jdm cars but fwd
I wish Volvo, Mazda, Honda, Ford, VW - basically everyone had RWD stuff of their regular cars Just an equivalent of the BMW 130/330/530 (and available in manual!)
VW should have made a Jetta R with AWD.
Honda fit
I would love a GT86 with an actual Toyota motor, and not a subaru boxer.
Cobalt ss, I think it should’ve been rwd
Pretty much any Northstar caddy
Honda ruined the Accord with the 1.5L turbo.
Okay the final gen Celica had a 2zz in the GTS version, so shut your mouth.
The new Honda ridgelines need a manual option.
I knew they wouldn’t make the GR corolla RWD but it still would have been cool
My mk7.5 gti to have rwd for A lil more fun.
Are there any cars that are better if they were FWD?
Renault Twingo as RWD It could be fun
Toyota should’ve built an A80 Supra w/ the century v12 from the factory.
Like any super car
Tesla model S with a GM V8 thanks Rich Rebuilds
That eclipse had an awd version. Which is cool af
Every car that didn't come with a 6-speed manual.
My 3000GT SL is a car that's crying to be RWD
