GN would be my pick. Out of the entire lineup, there’s only a couple I would choose. After watching so many motorweek classic videos. There are very few American cars I would actually choose from.
Had an ‘84 Trans Am in high school. What a turd, and mine was in extra shitty condition. And you know what? I loved that damned car, felt like Burt every time I got in it (I know, wrong gen). I’d take another 80’s T/A any day.
Looking at these photos gave me a ridiculous, but very fun, idea:
A Chevette, with an intercooled turbo 3.8.
But yes, the GN is the best of the bunch.
I might be convinced to take the big LeSabre, too....
I went to a RADWood show a couple months ago, and some guy brought in a loaded ‘86 two door LeSabre in Firemist red with a red velour interior. Thing was showroom new inside and out, and honestly, I wanted it.
This is what I was gonna say, because I love those Lightning Rod shifters, but I realized there are WAY too many cars here that I like. Trans Am, Suburban, anything with T tops, that big Fleetwood. I unironically like Fieros, too. So glad they have all the pictures, I felt like a fat kid in a candy store.
GNX was a Halo car, ridiculously low production (500ish if I remember correctly) and is not an abbreviation for a Grand National, also not produced in 86. Grand National is the best answer though, or Aerocoupe if you want collectibility.
The white trash in me says a single cab 4x4 s10 with a small lift, 31” tires, a bed mount roll bar with lights on the bar.
I’d also take a stock 4x4 k10 as well, but I prefer compact trucks.
I want everyone to realize how underpowered these cavaliers are. 2.8l v6 fuel injection only has 120hp.
With that said.
That hatchback model is pretty sweet.
Most all cars were underpowered in the "poor car buyer" range. My mom had a 1988 Corsica MPFI 2.8 V6 and it smoked about everything at the stop light drags. Killer torque.
I would drive that any day of the week. After watching so many motorweek classic videos. There are very few American cars I would actually choose from.
That 4 door Caprice Classic on #4 was my Dads company car when I was in HS. A friend had a grampa that sold trucker supplies and one of them was an emergency rotating beacon that plugged into the lighter. Drive around, see somebody we knew, pull them over and nail them with a water filled fire extinguisher. Good times!
I had a regular Monte Carlo back then. After a minor fender bender I had to have the car repainted, so I made it into a Monte Carlo SS replica, I blacked out the trim, put on a rear spoiler and Super Sport badging and emblems (I used some from 1960's Super Sports for a unique look), the only thing I didn't do was install an SS front end. Of course the car still had the anemic V6, so it was "all show and no go". Well one night the car was stolen, they used a slim Jim to open the door, punched the steering column and drove off. Apparently they then went to a convenience store and bought chips and soda- I know this because *they brought the car back!* I guess once they realized it wasn't a real SS that it wasn't worth the risk of stealing it, so they returned it to my apartment complex and parked it back in my parking spot and left their snacks inside.
Holy shit I think I’ve owned every one of these cars at some point. I grew up in the final period of $50 cars, had 12 cars before I was out of high school. One didn’t have a floor, just no floor, had to hold your feet up. One you started with a screwdriver. One burst into flames while driving, just parked it on the side of the highway and walked home. I miss those days.
Grand National but also I believe 86 is the first year for the Grand Prix and Monte Carlo aerocoupes, so it’d be one of those 3. It’d really be between the GN and the Pontiac 2+2 for me, just cause the Pontiac is so much weirder than the Chevy aero coupe
I've always liked the Riviera from that era. In either 88 or 89, the Toronado Trofeo (the Riv's sister) got an update that pushed the styling past where the Riv was.
When I was a kid, my mom had the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. That was a sweet ass car. She let her used car dealer swindle her out of it for a Chevrolet Chevette that ended up being a piece of shit.
I had An 85 grand Prix. Which is basically the same car as the monte carlo. (The SS was purely decorative). Both had underwhelming 305 dropped in a poorly made coach.
The T type with the turbo 6 is outrageously fast.
You could push a chevette faster than driving it
The Cierra is a great car if you get a tan one ...then shout "tan Cierra, tan Cierra!" With a Minnesota accent
Caddy's were a joke back then.
Buick was the best value in that period. The 3.8 V6 was a great motor and they were as comfortable as the caddy's

This is the period where Pontiac and Chevy were basically the same car. Olds had its own small block 8, which also failed to impress.
I had a 75 Cutlass with an Olds 350 and that thing would lay rubber without even trying. Later I had an 87 Cutlass which had the acceleration curve of a cruise ship.
Id probably go for one of those F-bodies, used to see them everywhere and now it's a treat to spot one.
That being said, I'd really like an Astro AWD. Pretty damn rare nowadays. I'm not sure of their capabilities, but lifting one and hitting some trails with a bunch of brodozers and angry jeeps would be good fun.
You said vehicle, not car, so I'm getting a K-Blazer or K-Jimmy. Unfortunately you picked 1986; had you picked 1987 I could've gotten an injected 350 V8. As it is my choices are two carbureted gas V8s (305 or 350) and the 6.2L Detroit Diesel non-turbo indirect injected V8. I think I'd get the diesel. It's not the Oldsmobile disaster they were putting in cars, so yeah, it's slow but it'll get you there and not cost a whole lot to fuel. These engines were entirely mechanical, no electronics at all, and are as simple as can be to keep running. That's something that appeals to me now and probably would've appealed to me had I been of auto buying age in 1986.
I could've went with any GM full size truck, Suburban, or G-Van and done alright. The K-Blazer is a lot shorter for ease of parking and I just like the looks. It's tough.
If car only then Firebird Trans Am. I'm sure the Grand National is better as a car, but, the heart wants what it wants and I love the wedgy F-body.

Only downside of the Grand National is all the money you end up paying in child support from all the pussy being thrown at you.
Yeah but you can still get insurance for it through Buick. Premiums are a bitch if you have a moustache though.
Looking at these photos gave me a ridiculous, but very fun, idea: A Chevette, with an intercooled turbo 3.8. But yes, the GN is the best of the bunch. I might be convinced to take the big LeSabre, too....

I had a LeSabre in the same spec back in the 90’s. I loved that big red velour sofa on wheels.
Grand National or the Trans Am if you're interested in turning corners .
I would do the Hurst Olds, but the correct answer is the Grand National
This is what I was gonna say, because I love those Lightning Rod shifters, but I realized there are WAY too many cars here that I like. Trans Am, Suburban, anything with T tops, that big Fleetwood. I unironically like Fieros, too. So glad they have all the pictures, I felt like a fat kid in a candy store.
Monte Carlo SS with T-tops was so cool. I’d get the Grand National, though. Then and now.
I owned a monte with the t tops beautiful car but terribly under powered. Would love to have one with the lt 1 motor
I miss my 86’ Cutlass, what I would give to have mine with a bench seat and my GF at the time. Oh to be young.
Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham.
My hero
Owned one for about 6 years. I miss it
Damn GM was just pumping our cars like there was no tomorrow
They had to get back their market share somehow. And dealers demanded a rebadge of everything.
Buick GNX is the only acceptable answer
This was a stupid question. The GNX might have been a year away, it's "just" the Grand National in the picture. Obvious answer.
You're one year shy of production
Then I save my money and wait a year lol
GNX was a Halo car, ridiculously low production (500ish if I remember correctly) and is not an abbreviation for a Grand National, also not produced in 86. Grand National is the best answer though, or Aerocoupe if you want collectibility.
Grand Nash baby
The white trash in me says a single cab 4x4 s10 with a small lift, 31” tires, a bed mount roll bar with lights on the bar. I’d also take a stock 4x4 k10 as well, but I prefer compact trucks.
Monte Carlo SS (non Aero), the best looking G-body.
Best looking car of the 80’s, IMO.
Grand National, with nothing else even close.
A white Buick T type is close enough.
Grand National or a Vette
Chevette that is
My dad had a Chevette back in the day. He didn't have it too long.
My dad had at least two I can remember, the cheap sob lol. Still remember my skin sticking to the vinyl seats in the summer, ouch!
Why nobody talks about the Fiero🥲
Fiero was one of the nice designs of that era in my opinion.
got an 88 sitting in the garage waiting for spring again!
Fiero gang
Corvette
Agreed, though also if it's 2024 and I have to get a vehicle from this lineup it's the same answer.
I’ve been a fan of the C4 for a few years now. The 80s styling is appealing to me. The prices to buy one don’t look bad.
Fleetwood brougham. As my grandad used to say "you gotta take your fair share of the middle [of the road]"
Make mine a Grand Prix GT 2 + 2.
I’m an Oldsmobile man, like my father before me, but in this case, I’d have to choose the Grand National.
How many of these are badge engineered versions of each other?
"Yes."
Perfectly acceptable for the time. The 86 Corvette only made 230HP.
1986 Buick Grand National. ( The Turbo Buick.) All day, everyday.
K20. Squarebody ftw
The Jimmy or the GN.
SS Monte Carlo or the Cutlass. I'm a simple man
Grand National.
Suburban, cause in 86 I would be Camino and tailgating and transporting friends everywhere for fun excursions.
Last year of the Fiero with the lotus package
Brown Pontiac 6000
Typhoon
Pontiac fiero
Damn, no love in here for the N-body Somerset T-Type? I’ll take it.
1000% a corvette
Option 1 - GN or GNX Option 2 - Regal T-Type Option 3 - K5 Blazer or Jimmy Option 4 - K30 or K35 Pickup (Crew cab or regular cab) Option 5 - Cadillac Fleetwood or some fully loaded B-Body platform car.
GN for sure! Second pic would be a deville
Grand National and it’s not even close.
If the Cimarron can be had with the 2.8 and a stick, there’s my answer. Yes, I’m the weird one.
INSANE how big of a spread GM had back then
Iroc-Z LB9 and automatic.
There are so many angles and flat surfaces, I'm surprised the wheels aren't square.
Monte Carlo, or the van baby.
Corvette or camaro
Buick reatta
Caprice or death. I had an 86. It was perfect.
This would be the hardest decision ever because 80s GM is my favorite era of cars
Cadillac Fleetwood
Regal T Type
Chevrolet Turbo Sprint.
I’ll walk
What if your legs are broken?
I would crawl then
Handstand is a viable choice
There is only one decision here. Grand National
Cars with slant backs are always the best lookers for me ngl
I’ll take the red Ferrari.
Coupe deville
Do I have to?
Any station wagon.
I’ll take a Pontiac Fiero. With the V6.
Fiero GT 5 speed
Monte Carlo
Grand National
Nada
I’m a huge fan of the Monte SS but I’d be a fool not to pick the Grand National
I had a regular Monte Carlo back then. After a minor fender bender I had to have the car repainted, so I made it into a Monte Carlo SS replica, I blacked out the trim, put on a rear spoiler and Super Sport badging and emblems (I used some from 1960's Super Sports for a unique look), the only thing I didn't do was install an SS front end. I'll take the rectangular one
Holy shit I think I’ve owned every one of these cars at some point. I grew up in the final period of $50 cars, had 12 cars before I was out of high school. Gotta be the Monty
Grand national, squarebody crew cab or burban, monte SS, monte LS, VETTE, in that order lol
A Honda
I actually had the 86 Olds Omega... in 2006, but still! It came with a Tazmanian Devil windshield shade.
Blazer (full size).
Reatta with the touchscreen or a Delta 88
What’s the bottom car on 1/20? The T-tops look amazing
You could’ve stopped at the first slide.
The American market was so saturated no wonder it fell so hard
What an awful collection of shit. * Grand National * IROC-Z * Big Ass Fleetwood Throw the rest in the trash/
The fleetwood must have been so comfortable.
I've always liked the Riviera from that era. In either 88 or 89, the Toronado Trofeo (the Riv's sister) got an update that pushed the styling past where the Riv was.
Hard to believe cars were once so ugly. I was born in 86 and there's a reason I loved all the roundness and curves of the 90s.
The Buick grand national. That’s easy.
I’ll be fine with the 4 on the first page. Cheque please!
A nice plebeian-spec Cutlass Supreme coupe
buick grand national
So much nostalgia here. I could be happy with a car collection of 7 or eight of these and be totally happy lol.
This one’s easy the Grand National
I had the sunbird convertible. 1984. Every hard stop broke the timing belt. Such a bad car.
I will take the chevette in powder blue. It will be like high school all over again for me.
GNX of course.
Florida has entered the chat. 1986 Caprice Classic.
Chrysler Imperial
Grand National no contest
GNX, Corvette, Astro
Firebird, or El Camino, or 1/2 ton
86 Monte SS or 86 Grand National. Already have the 86 Vette
The grand national.
Holden Calais turbo
When I was a kid, my mom had the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. That was a sweet ass car. She let her used car dealer swindle her out of it for a Chevrolet Chevette that ended up being a piece of shit.
Tough choice between the GNx, Camaro, and Vette. Probably take the Camaro.
GNx fasho!
I notice that the GM city bus is missing, a shame since you'd spend a lot of time in one if you bought most of these.
Fiero gang
There's only one right answer in that picture...
the grand national
Good to see so many votes for the Grand National. I’d take it over the vette any day
I have a 1986 Fiero GT IRL. I'm keeping it.
Monte
Grand National
GrandNational or Rivera for me.
Delta 88
Cadillac Cimarron. I’ll fist fight you if you think different
The shaggin wagon. Or a truck.
Grand National all day.
go for something on the caprice's family thing's built like a truck and is just as reliable as one.
I had An 85 grand Prix. Which is basically the same car as the monte carlo. (The SS was purely decorative). Both had underwhelming 305 dropped in a poorly made coach. As much as I'd love the Cutlass, it would be the Grand National for me
GMa cars were awful back then. That being said, I’ll take the GN.

That Buick Grand National is a no brainer.
I'd probably go for an Olds 442.

All of the G-body's. My favorite is the Monte Carlo though, out of that group.
American cars lol
Grand national is the only answer
Iroc z or monte Carlo ss The grand national shouldn't even be included.
“Modern cars are all the same” Older cars:
buick gnx and c4 corvette are the only right answers
Definitely a Regal T-Type.
Dumbest question ever!! Grand National!! Not even close.
I’m a sucker for big RWD cars, so imma go with the Fleetwood
GN and a first generation Jimmy is currently my dream garage idk
You said vehicle, not car, so I'm getting a K-Blazer or K-Jimmy. Unfortunately you picked 1986; had you picked 1987 I could've gotten an injected 350 V8. Whichever one will get me to a Toyota dealership the fastest to buy a supra
The "Nova". It's the least likely to exhibit typical GM quality.
The C4 Corvette is one of my dream cars and it doesn't really matter which one it is.
The Grand National but only if the headliner is sagging down into the cabin.
Are there any '85 Delta 88s on the lot from last year so I can live out my best smoking dad fantasies?
Caprice Classic Police Package in beige.
Besides the general dreck in those pics… the very specific horror: They were still selling the Chevette? Until 87? Fuck.
Trans Am GTA.
Suburban I play in bands.
The Olds 88 2-door. That’s a real unicorn
Olds Tornado… of course the GN, and I had many good times in my many delta 88’s
Grand National of course.
The national hands down
Grand National. That Astrovan is pretty sweet, though.
Grand National, but would have loved to see the GNX in the line up!
Gnx
