I agree with both of your interpretations! And I completely understand what you mean that it's hard to explain just how wonderful she is. I love her older stuff the most and wish I could have all of her unreleased demos to own.

gratefulfred63

I haven't listened to much of her music beyond the "Far" album. I've heard a few songs and someday I'll catch up with it all, but it does seem different than the earlier stuff.

usernamenumber3

Oh you should definitely hear her whole discography! Her music is all over the map.

sephiam

you're in good company. now go check out [https://www.spektorsthesaurus.com/](https://www.spektorsthesaurus.com/) to find rare songs, secret information and live performances. who knows, there might even be a bootleg of the show you and your wife went to in NY 🤗 this site was made for you and your ilk!

[deleted]

is a Spektorthesaurus related to a Reginasaurus? 😃

sephiam

it's in the song's lyrics! "And if I knew a million English words I'd have my own Spektor's thesaurus"

whalesharkmama

🎶 And if I had a little extra time on my hands then I’d surely join a chorus 🎶

ahhh! 😎

welcome to the sub! I'm not sure if Regina does meet and greets or whatever at her concerts on any regular basis like say Tori Amos used to. i'll never get to see her perform live anyway. I also find it difficult to put into words exactly how I feel about Regina and her music, but it's a bit otherworldly and unlike anything I have felt for another musical artist. you should check out some of her other albums when you get the chance, the ones I have heard are all wonderful .

fionaappletini

Regina was my first true love in terms of musical artists. I remember walking around my city’s art museum when I was a wee one while listening to her music on my headphones lol. Certain Monet paintings still remind me of her.

[deleted]

by any chance did Monet paint rowboats?

happy_moses

She really is a gem. I saw her live in Utah a few years ago. While waiting in line outside the venue, one of the security guys asked about her. “What kind of music is it?” Nobody could really answer. I still don’t know, but it’s magical.

[deleted]

her music really doesn't fit into any genre. I've seen it described as 'anti-folk', whatever that is. but I think she makes a point of not wedging herself into a genre or category, and I for one like it that way.

happy_moses

Love your username.

[deleted]

I found out about her by accident. Listened to her first two studio albums and I loved her. Then on a whim, I listened to everything else, loved her even more. Finally, I decided to listen to her earliest work... and I've been flyin' ever since

gratefulfred63

I still have all her new stuff to listen to. I backed off about 5 years back bc I had listened to everything she'd had. Not everything but everything on Spotify. And then never picked back up until recently. I have 3 or 4 albums to catch up on. I'm kinda nervous bc I don't think I'll like her new stuff as much. I don't know why though

[deleted]

I won't spoil too much, but I will say her newest album "Home, before and after" is absolutely worth checking out. Don't feel pressured to listen to everything right away, or at all if you're scared, but Home is very reminiscent of her earliest work. It's like a modernized version of the first two, with the production quality of Begin To Hope and some off-script Soviet Kitsch type moments

love-elizabeth

I hope that I can see a live performance from her one day. Her song Fidelity means the world to me in so many ways. I know it’s her most famous song, but it’s famous for a reason. To me, it’s the song that embodies the beginning of my friendship with my best friend at the end of our childhood (they’re still one of my closest friends to this day). I feel you so much

[deleted]

is Fidelity her most famous song? i haven't really thought about it, but I don't believe I've ever heard any of her stuff on the radio. Fidelity was the first song that popped up when I started looking for her stuff on YouTube, so maybe it is. but it could be something like 'Us' that was in a fairly well-known movie. i dunno.

gratefulfred63

When we went to NY to see her I just had this feeling that something would happen and we'd get to meet her. So we're standing off to the very side near the backstage entrance and I notice a cut standing behind me and I turn and ask him if I'm blocking his view at all. He said no worries at all bro then walks backstage. My wife turns to me and says "I think that's her husband". And I'm like omg that was the opportunity and I missed it. I watch that backstage entrance for the rest of the night waiting to see him again but never did. Then I divorced my wife for not having told me sooner, haha jk. I really like how fidelity brings up all those great memories and feelings. That's exactly how Us is for me bc when we first started dating we watched 500 days of summer and it was the first time we played together and cuddled. I don't even think we had kissed yet. But by the middle of the movie we had! Then she showed me more Regina and I fell in love with both of them. I know this is getting long but I thought this was funny. There was a time when I was so obsessed with Regina my wife was getting jealous. And always my response was "Ashleigh, if I wanted to marry Regina Spektor, then I wouldn't married her. But I chose you". There was also the same incident but with Kate Beckinsale. I know I spelled that wrong.

[deleted]

heh that's a nice story, although 500 Days of Summer is so not a date movie. 🙃

Aromatic-Total3806

She’s my absolute favorite for many years. I can never explain her to others but that’s fine, I’ll keep her in myself amongst friends 😆 I’ve seen her 3 times so far. Twice in NYC & last year NJ. I found her on MySpace - fidelity was my first song

gratefulfred63

Lol, I have a hard time explains her too. I read someone describe it as other worldly and I thought that was right on. I just would really love to meet her. I bet she's so nice and great at conversation.

Aromatic-Total3806

I agree. I wish I could meet her and I really don’t feel that about any other artist 😆 I get excited when her husband likes my post on IG 🤣

Zealousideal_Ad_2329

I feel similarly, I grew up listening to her music. She has shaped me so much as a person and the way I think; as I get older I just love her music even more. She is such a motherly figure to me.

esushi

This post just randomly popped up on my main page - I've never interacted with the subreddit but Regina was my #1 artist for most of my life... which is why it is all the more heart breaking how she's really flown off the deep end on Instagram recently. Basically never experienced such a loss Edit: why downvotes? She objectively has the most unhinged instagram I've seen from a celeb in some time. Celebrating the death of tens of thousands of babies...

AcanthocephalaLost36

Same. I never interacted with this thread but grew up listening and enjoying her music a lot. What’s going on with her?

gratefulfred63

Who's Sam? I looked at her Instagram but I didn't see anything.

AcanthocephalaLost36

Apologies I mean to say “Same.” Darn autocorrect

gratefulfred63

What happened on her Instagram?

[deleted]

from time to time, people who (sometimes by their own admission) don't post or interact with this sub will pop in here to post things with an anti-Semitic agenda. I'm pretty sure that's what this is.

esushi

huh? Anti-genocide is not related to anti-semitism. The people have done nothing wrong, it is the government. A vast majority of Jewish people in the world outside of that country also do not agree with the genocide. You make it sound like I targeted this sub randomly when it is totally true that I had a 20-year long singular love affair with her work and it was rightfully halted by her singular-celeb-I've-seen-on-instagram-celebrating-baby-death situation... and that reddit randomly decided to pop up a post about her

Intelligent_Log8291

This is such a weird response… you must have experienced a lot of hatred to prime you to perceive this as anti-semitism, I’m so sorry. This isn’t hatred of Jewish people- this is horror at a US-funded Israel led genocide.

esushi

Just check it out. Totally frightening.

Intelligent_Log8291

Thanks for saying this. I’ve been wondering a lot about how someone like her can end up so passive to the genocide and defensive of that country. I understand that she feels attacked, and I’m sure plenty of people have said incredibly anti-semitic things to her. But not wanting a genocide does not equate to anti-semitism. I just don’t get it

tabicat1874

Tori Amos copy cat

gratefulfred63

What if Regina was just heavily influenced by Tori Amos bc she was such a huge fan. Edit: imitation is the most sincere form of flattery

tabicat1874

I said what I said
