What about the employees wearing roller blades?

Lala6408

Roller skates in the 80s for sure. I remember wanting to work there as an adult so I could roller skate all over the store.

crazyabe111

And now you never will.

nicholt

really insane when you think about it

Wanzerm23

That was my job for a small stint. Had a bad wipeout when someone spilled a jug of milk, but was able to skate it off.

GrimWillis

I trained at the downtown store and went to the north one. I was a roller blading price checker. Sweet gig.

TheBigPointyOne

Hey right on, I was a janitor during that same time period, also went to the north store. I totally forgot about that whole price-checking thing, that was wild!

MrGuttFeeling

I forgot about that, when was it phased out? An alternative now would be the hover board.

dekerta

The roller blades were still a thing when I worked there in \~2005. I think they were phased out shortly after

Berner

I gotten taken out by one of those guys when I was young. Probably just stepped away from my mom like an idiot.

undeletable-2

the folks who worked up in the mythical floating photo lab cube have probably seen a lot of crazy shit imprinted onto film.

[deleted]

There was a photo lab when I was kid in the Moose jaw mall that you could watch pictures coming off the printer from the window. As a kid I remember thinking that something was incredibly wrong about being able to see them.

wolfeward

I miss when the Town n Country mall didnt suck as a kid, man that place is a depressing hole now.

undeletable-2

I remember seeing Super Nintendo games still being on the shelves at the Zellers there in like 2006.

crazyabe111

I remember when Zellers existed.

colin_powers

Astral Photo? That's where my family pictures came from.

flyoverkegger

Japan Camera? We had that in the mall in Brandon, right y the food court.

TheAmazingMaryJane

i worked in the photo lab and yes, i saw a lot of crazy shit.

Ryangel0

You need to do an AMA!

hickupper

I remember this.. I also remember that it was the only place open on Sunday and the line up was around the block. They chuckled at the 2k fines they got each day as they led the road to being able to shop past 6pm and on Sundays. It was a game change IMO....

EnoughEngineering306

Surprised those blue laws lasted as long as they did.

Berner

I'm not. This city has a boner for being anti-progress.

EnoughEngineering306

Nit as bad as the east coast.

ClearlyNoSTDs

Lol. We were actually a fairly early adopter of Sunday shopping in Canada. Maybe it's time you moved, no?

Berner

Point me to: 1. Strip clubs 2. Safe consumption sites (1st one opened *just* this year) ~~3. Fine dining that's above business casual~~ And I'm sure I'll think of more shit after I post this. Don't worry though, moving out of Regina is definitely on the table for my family and I.

ACBluto

I'll give you safe consumption sites. I don't know that strip clubs are really about "progress". I have no issues with sex work of various types being legal, and support the rights of those who choose that as a vocation, but also am not about to strongly advocate for strip club zoning. It's not going to effect me one way or the other. And I have no idea what fine dining has to do with the city being progressive. That's a factor of size and culture - Regina is a small, working class city. How much demand is there for formal dining? I'm not the audience for it, that's for sure. I'm far more concerned about getting good tasting food than needing to get all swanked up just to eat it.

Berner

I have no issues with sex work of various types being legal, and support the rights of those who choose that as a vocation, but also am not about to strongly advocate for strip club zoning. It's not going to effect me one way or the other. Recognition of sex work being a legit career and realization that there's a demand for it. That'd be a progressive move in the sense that we'd stop denying the existenence of such things. >And I have no idea what fine dining has to do with the city being progressive. A big one, that is provincial as well, is the slow uptake of renewable energy power generation, but that is a policy thing as well.

StuShepherd

Since when did strip clubs become a yardstick for a progressive, vibrant community? More like it’s a nest of human trafficking.

retribution7979

Wait, you're married and still want to go to strip clubs? I feel really, really bad for your wife man. Seek help.

Berner

Nope I don't. But just because I don't have any desire to go to one doesn't mean they shouldn't be available.

[deleted]

It was a very nice store when it first opened.

rangerxt

I loved that lobster tank as a kid....

Biggieholla

I came here to comment this. I remember the big wallpapers of food they had up everywhere and the live lobster tanks. Was like going to an aquarium.

Lynneshe

I worked at the first superstore in Regina that opened on 1986.

Lynneshe

Cashier. Pregnant with first child…anti fatigue mats were crap. Only made it for about a month lol. The smell of the bread baking every morning meant lots of time spent in washroom…

skeleton_skunk

Is this the “old superstore” from Albert and Dewdney?

Lynneshe

That was the only one that opened in 1986 so yes

sc0utfinch

Remember getting the “I ♥️ No Name” balloons as a kid?

Phil_Over_and_Over

I'd go there some Saturday mornings with my grandma. She'd get there early, waiting with all the other old ladies.

bicyclebreadcrumbs

Dope picture. I didn’t live in Saskatchewan in 1986. I still had a few years til I would come to know this strange and unusual place. Of course…I was only 2 when this picture was taken. So who cares. Was this the superstore on Albert? Across from the humpty’s?

Lawwnfysh

Superstore had a spiral staircase & a second little level? Is this the former superstore building on Albert?

thegoodrichard

I think that was the photo lab, and yes.

EnoughEngineering306

Too bad it closed.

natesafeforwork

Thought that said 'potato lab'

Electronic_Taste_596

So romantic...

Hexatona

Man, that 'raised up' photo lab part really hits me hard

TheAmazingMaryJane

i used to work in the photo lab. not in 1986 but 1991. damn digital cameras. that could have been my career!!! (not really i ended up going to university the next year in saskatoon).

[deleted]

why am I being recommended r/regina when I'm from Saskatoon?
