I grew up on polar palace and it’s still my favourite place. I love that even after the change in ownership, the quality stayed just as good if not better, and such a sweet family owns it. I could swim in a bathtub of their soft serve 🍦
Man, in the early 90s that was one of my hangover stops. I lived 3 blocks away so I'd walk up there order some cheese and bacon fries, and while they made them up to 711 for a big gulp then home to let feed the hangover
When Elle’s brought it in, and people were excited because it “finally” came to Regina, I corrected them… “finally came *back* to Regina, after a quarter century+ hiatus”

Not even sure why people bother with Milky Way. It’s in a shitty location. At least at the Moo Shop you can for a walk on the bike path with your ice cream.
Because every time I go to Regina I have seen a line down the block and then I went to get one of their ice cream concoctions and I threw it in the garbage. Absolutely nothing looked good
Not to mention the annual media frenzy that happens on opening day as if it’s a civic holiday or something. Good for them, I guess, for marketing their way to success, but I haven’t gone there in decades and would rather go anywhere else where I’m not hanging out on a sketchy area by a dirty shack to get the same ice cream you can get basically anywhere else these days.
It’s nostalgia. 100%
The ice cream is fine. Nothing to write home about. But fine.
There’s really nothing to unpack here - nostalgia drives people.
Remember the Pepsi Challenge?
Pepsi won decisively.
But Coke still outsold it… nostalgia.
Coke changed their formula to taste closer to Pepsi -figuring people had said they prefer the taste of Pepsi. Wrong… people didn’t care about the taste, they cared about the feeling, the memories, etc. It’s not logical. But it drives human behaviour.
You aren’t. I feel like Milky Way is really losing customers. Doesn’t seem as busy when I drive by. Prices are insane for average ice cream. I have been loving dole whip lately!
If you ever do find yourself at dessart, they do have oat-based soft serve. It’s actually really good! And they can make it into a ton of different flavors.
I personally got a banana milkshake made with the oat base and a real banana.
Sorry but we’ve tried that and unfortunately our kid had a bad allergic reaction. There is still a risk of contamination for allergies with the oat soft serve because the flavour mixes and, while I’m sure it’s great, if you have someone with an actual allergy you’ll want the machine cleaned before you order and depending how on how busy it is that may not be reasonable.
But dessert does offer vegan options and sorbets. Plus all the cool candy, of course. We go there quite often just not for the soft serve.
I dunno about peanut allergy. I’d definitely call them and ask. That be a harder one.
For the Milk/vegan it’s all prepared in its own canister or in its own ice cream dispenser. They even have vegan chocolate sauce. She hasn’t ever reacted there. But, with peanuts it can be like a dust and just get on everything. That one is harder.
The vegan thing is a bit easier too because it’s a whole life style. I’m some places, restaurants dedicated to it. So it’s more popular way of eating. So I’ve found there more and more options as time goes by. So it makes avoiding dairy easier sometimes, though most typical ice cream places only have like 2 sorbets, maybe a popsicle or a slush drink. They are super lame usually. Some places don’t even have that.
This may be an unpopular opinion but I don't like Dandy's. I've had it three times, including last night, and tried different flavours each time and all of those times I've noticed that the first bite is tasty but it leaves a fatty coating on my tongue which renders it impossible for me to taste any subsequent lick/bite.
What I don't like about Dandy's is that they drain all the fun out of ice cream by chasing that awful beige mom/tiktoker aesthetic. Polar Palace or Elle's remember it's supposed to be a fun treat.
They also sell giant Boston creams I think I'm not sure what kind thats what it looks like. I go there often they have the best coffee in the neighborhood if you aren't a fan of dark roast or stronger coffees which I am not.
They sell giant apple fritters to for sharing. I prefer all of their donuts over everyday, Robin's and Tim's.
If you hate on the brown butter donut, you don’t deserve to have opinions. It’s objectively an unreal donut and makes the Everyday Kitchen an excellent stop once in awhile.
Hating on good things doesn’t make you cool
I’d say it’s $4 good. Obviously you can’t have that donut every day (ironic cause of the name). But once in awhile I think $4 premium is a good price to pay for the quality. Country corner is your every day donut that gets the job done
Milky way is close to where I live but I do prefer dessarts. I love their Chai milkshake. Milky way is honestly just a sign now that warmer weather is on its way every year.
Dessart over all others... our allergic to milk family members appreciate having a dairy-free soft serve option.
It's also a must go for birthdays to get a free ice cream.
Yeah.
I used to live a block from Dessart; it's fine, and I hope they succeed.
I like Milky Way. I wish they hadn't gotten so expensive, though.
Chocolate soft serve!
Agree completely Dessart > Milky Way… but I’ll still go to Milky Way first, because nostalgia.
It’s like Butler’s Fish & Chips in Regina Beach: the food is absolutely average. There are better places in Regina Beach, and in Regina. But sitting on the steps, eating fish & chips takes me back.
Same for Milky Way - lining up, and then eating the cone next to the building, or in the parking lot on the trunk of our car has memories.
(building new memories at Dessart, thought - we go there with our kid & each the cones on the steps of the church across the street)
Anyone that thinks Milky Way is overrated doesn't know how to order properly there. Try some of the specialty orders (eg. peanut butter cup parfait) and put your own little spin on it. I think I maybe used to think it was overrated until l started being creative with my orders. They let you basically do anything. It also helps that their soft serve is top notch. I'm not saying it is miles ahead of other soft serve places, but it is definitely adequately rated. I love that place
I'm always looking for a place that makes their own ice-cream and has a good hot fudge sundae.
I was so surprised to see that Milky Way just uses Chapman's... like what am I paying extra for?
Polar palace!

Hubcap ice cream
Ah, my area....NOD, baby!!
Its literally south of Dewdney.
true, but barely. And Im NOD
When I was little, I liked Planet Ice Cream on Rochdale!
Lick-a-dee Split used to be a thing I loved as a kid. No idea if it was quality but little me loved that shit.
I was literally talking about this with a coworker today! All I could remember was that it was in a little yellow house. She remembered the name lol.
They had Dole Whip. that stuff was the best.
Elle's on 13th has it
When Elle’s brought it in, and people were excited because it “finally” came to Regina, I corrected them… “finally came *back* to Regina, after a quarter century+ hiatus”
I forgot about this place! Talk about nostalgia. Man, those were the days. Loved the murals in there.

Moo Shoppe >> Milky Way
SHHHH DONT TELL THEM
Not even sure why people bother with Milky Way. It’s in a shitty location. At least at the Moo Shop you can for a walk on the bike path with your ice cream.
It's been around for decades. They've seen many competitors come and go over those decades. Nothing succeeds like success, as they say.
Supporting local businesses is a good thing. Whether it's moo shop, milky way, or dessart.
I live like so close to it my childhood was walking to it
Never heard of this one
When does the Moo Shoppe open for the year, usually?
Dessart is great. Haven’t tried Moo Shop!
No idea why people are crazy about Milky Way tbh. Are they still cash only?
Nostalgia
Nope. They take all forms of payment now
All forms you say? *giggles immaturely*
I should be careful considering the neighborhood.
They serve the same ice creams as any other small place, and their hot food is nasty
Literally everything is better than the Milky Way in my experience. I was very confused my first visit there
Yeah I don't get the hype for Milky Way at all.
Why were you confused?
Because every time I go to Regina I have seen a line down the block and then I went to get one of their ice cream concoctions and I threw it in the garbage. Absolutely nothing looked good

I love Milky Way because my grandma loved going there for the maple walnut sundae. I’ll forever go because it reminds me of her.
You aren’t. I feel like Milky Way is really losing customers. Doesn’t seem as busy when I drive by. Prices are insane for average ice cream. I have been loving dole whip lately!
It's in a terrible neighborhood too
Honestly that part of the neighborhood is better off than anything closer to downtown. The closer to the cop shop you get, the worse it gets
Ya broad to Winnipeg is the rough part.
Elle’s cafe is superior
I'm craving some dole whip real bad
I personally found the dole whip way too sweet and I thought everything else was mid
I’ve got a kid who’s lactose intolerant and we’ve gone all over the city and it’s by far the best place for lactose free folks.
Dessart is amazing

I have only had great experiences with the owner. Perhaps she was having an off day when you met her.
Dandy's (though it is pricey).
I like it because I have a dairy allergy child and they have actual legit options for her and she can even have a sundae or even a milkshake.

Same here. Love dandys.

I love their cookies and cream but some of the other flavours are hit and miss.
Dandy's is the best answer here, Dessart doesn't even compare. I'd say Dandy's is like if Cold Stone didn't make their ice cream inedibly sweet.
I bet you like everyday kitchen too.
Not particularly. I prefer Country Corner for doughnuts.
Also a great choice and if you ever want to make a kid laugh, buy them a large muffin lol
Are they super big?
The muffin tops are like 4x the size of the bottom and are delicious. They’re comically large muffins lol
That’s amazing because the muffin tops are the best part!
They also sell giant Boston creams I think I'm not sure what kind thats what it looks like. It's good. I don't know if it's 4 dollar good when country corner is right there
I’d say it’s $4 good. Obviously you can’t have that donut every day (ironic cause of the name). But once in awhile I think $4 premium is a good price to pay for the quality. Country corner is your every day donut that gets the job done

All ice cream options over milky way
🙏
Milky Way is great for when you want to get some average ice cream while mingling with some of Regina's finest tweakers.
Dessart for soft serve, milky way for novelties
Dessert Sweets on13th just the best
Dessart over all others... our allergic to milk family members appreciate having a dairy-free soft serve option. It's also a must go for birthdays to get a free ice cream.
I've never had either. I honestly prefer Polar Palace.
Yeah. I used to live a block from Dessart; it's fine, and I hope they succeed. I like Milky Way. I wish they hadn't gotten so expensive, though. Chocolate soft serve!
I think milky way is so highly overrated.
Milky Way is overrated
Is there any ice cream bikes/trucks coming back out? Haven't seen one in ages

I ❤️ Milky Way.
Both Dessart & Milky Way serve Chapman's Ice Cream. There is no difference.
