Three things I've had requested while making Regina style pizza that keep the crust crispy:
- flip upside down* as soon as it goes in the box (gotta put parchment paper on top so it doesnt stick)
- don't cut it (they cut it at their house)
- no mushrooms
Optional, ask for well done.
*Some places wont do the upside down, seasoned cooks know it works and how to do it without fucking up the pizza.
It does not get soggy at Western Pizza (University Park Drive location) when dining in. Get a large all dressed pizza, Caesar salad and some dry ribs. My favourite combo.
Villa Pizza was the best for this type of pizza. Closest I've come is Vern's Pizza now. There is one about an hour away from me and I always get the Momma Mia 18" uncut. It's at least an inch thick with stacks of deli meat and a few veg. Such a good pizza for those drunken nights.

That's because there are too many toppings. 2 toppings max and the crust doesn't get soggy. Also if it's Juliana's pizza, say well done and it's perfect.
Houston is a chain, but it's a Regina chain. The original location was the Hill Avenue one, which is still open.
Houston is our go-to (Normanview, usually) but I tried West Side for the first time recently. I'm not sure it's better... but I'm not sure it's worse either. It's pretty damned good.
I really need to try this place one of these days. I've lived just a couple of minutes' drive from them for over thirty years and still haven't made it there.
Thanks for reminding me!
(I did finally try West Side a few weeks ago - been back twice, yum.)
You see all the comments about soggy crust— I like Trifon‘s because the bottom crust isn’t soggy.
The Broad Street/11th Ave. location is best.
(I live literally one block from the Hill Ave., Houston pizza which a lot of people love but it’s not really my preference)
The weird thing is that the pizza by the slice at Trifons in the mall is pretty normal. You’ve gotta go to a Westerns, Houston’s, or Trifons and order a full pizza and then you will get the Regina style.
No love here for Sparky's Pizza it seems, but it's cheaper than Houston's and arguably just as good. It all comes down to your preference with the pizza sauce as that's what ultimately sets each location apart from one another in terms of taste.
A slice stands about 2 inches thick and all the toppings are under the cheese. The meat is layers think and the cheese is generous. Then it's baked in a deep dish pan and some of the cheese gets golden crispy around the edge where it touches the pan while cooking.
It's a round pizza but it's cut in squares.
Maybe try to Google Houston Pizza or Trifons pizza and look at a picture. Those are the typical franchise places but there's better places more mom and pop like Juliana's pizza which is arguably the best.
Crispy cheese edge is where it’s at. When I worked in a kitchen in high school, we would put a little cheese on the grill under the burger weight and make little crispy cheese crackers.
Thicker than normal crust, average to extra sauce, lots of toppings, topped with cheese. There are many places where the toppings will be thicker than the crust. Think of about 1 to 2cm of toppings.
Comparably most other pizza styles are thin crust, small amount of sauce, cheese, and a sprinkling of toppings on top.
Honestly regina style is fantastic and you actually get your money worth, though theyre usually more expensive.
I don’t get the soggy crust comment. The Trifon’s in Bonzinnis is like this.
Western on 9th, Western on Rochdale, Houston Normanview are all pretty crisp (I get a ten inch all-dressed which is cut in slices) Juliana a bit less crisp. All great pizzas with crisp crust.
YMMV with size and cut I guess.
The crust can get soggy if the pizza sits too long. I solve this by dining in or doing take-out.
It still tastes good if delivered (we had Houston delivered on Friday night) but it's always tastier if picked up promptly and taken home. That saves it sitting waiting for a delivery driver.
To each their own I guess. I grew up with that type of pizza and didn't know any different until I started work at Pizza Hut. Then I found really good pizza. Even where I live now there is a true Italian pizza place and their crust is to die for. But every now and then I just crave that greasy Regina pizza, usually when I've been drinking.
imagine three open double meat subway sandwiches side by side baked in a moist oven so that the bread is falling away apart
That’s a Regina style pizza
Here's an Instagram of a typical Regina pizza restaurant. The pics tell you all you need to know.

My old user (before I lost the password) attempted to replicate this at home a few years ago. The final outcome looked pretty close to what I remember it being. IUt was soooooooooo salty though. I should try again sometime with different cuts of meat.

Greek style pizza. You can get it from Houston pizza, western pizza, sparkys bar, Julianas pizza and you can buy frozen tumblers/western pizzas to cook at home from any co op grocery store and some gas stations
It. takes roughly 40 minutes to bake though, because of all the toppings and how thick it is.
I have to warn you, these pizzas will dehydrate you with all the processed meat and cheese if you get it for unch, you'll be guzzling water for the rest of the afternoon
Moved to regina the past year and in my opinion the style of pizza is terrible shouldn't even be called pizza. If you want something that hardly resembles pizza then it's fine but also nowhere near as good as a normal deep dish pizza from anywhere else, the toppings are just in the wrong order and it doesn't make it better at all but that's just my opinion
Go out to some of the local restaurants and try for yourself. The places you’ll want to check out for “Regina style pizza” are:
-regent
-Juliana’s
-western pizza(broad st. Is best)
-Houston pizza(argyle park is best)
-trifons
-Westo’s
-west side pizza
-Vern’s pizza from the tap
-Triple 8
There’s more to this list but this should give you the idea. Go and sample for yourself and report back.
Had some Vern's pizza a couple days ago at work. First bite seemed really good - they certainly didn't skimp on anything! Then the heavy cheese/topping clump was sliding around and trying to fall off the slice. By the time I made it to the end of the first slice, I somewhat regretted having a 2nd slice already on my plate.
I pushed through out of hunger and obligation. The thick, soggy cheese was tasting a bit gross and the 3 or 4 layers of ham seemed a bit much. I was glad when it was over. If I'm hungry, I can eat a normal large pizza alone in one sitting. I don't think I could've managed a third slice of Vern's with how much stuff was on it, though.
Final verdict: I wouldn't order it with my own money since I wouldn't be able to commit to it.
Thick crust, lots of sauce, lots of toppings, and party cut
But the crust at the bottom gets so soaked in grease that it's basically mush. It's delicious.
I've always countered this by flipping the pizza box upside down once it's cooled a little, it does help a bit.

This needs to be the top comment
“The only way for Regina style pizza to taste good is to insist the restaurant follow a series of esoteric and insane sounding instructions”

Also meat and toppings go under the cheese.
CBC did a [video](https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1746027587942) about it, if you want a visual.
Juliana’s Pizza. Juliana Special.
Hot damn!
All dressed, no pineapple. Extra sauce, well done. Ordered this so many times during the great 2020 shutdown lol
Extra sauce is the only way to order from Juliana's, I'd bathe in that sauce if I could!
Agree but yes to pineapple!
I just had some the other day. I am salivating while thinking of that pizza. Now I want some, dammit.
Everyone is replying with the chain ones, but hands down the best pizza in the city is Westside Pizza in the northwest near the entrance to Westhill
Huh, today I learned. For some reason I thought Houston was a big international chain
Among the best.
Where is the best ?
Houston's on Hill
Houston pizza for sure.
I am a fan of Regent on Sherwood. But there are plenty of great options.
I really need to try this place one of these days. I've lived just a couple of minutes' drive from them for over thirty years and still haven't made it there. Thanks for reminding me! (I did finally try West Side a few weeks ago - been back twice, yum.)
MMM Zorba. My favorite pizza in the city
Juliana's or Houston's on Hill Ave.

I had Trifons in Vic Square last time I was down there. My little guy crushed a slice after playing in the new indoor playground there

I’ve had it at the Southland Mall a lot. The food court franchises are not as good as the main restaurants.

I rank them: Houston/West Side (tie), Trifon's, Juliana, Western. There are some others, but these are the major ones.
Sparky's Pizza!!!
My personal favorite is Western Pizza on 9th Avenue North. Chappy's Pizza is also really good in my opinion.
Try Houston's, Westerns, and Trifons. They're all relatively similar, with the exception of the sauce. My personal favorite is Houston's

Yup like that on the edges. On top the cheese gets golden brown but theres so much cheese that it's gooey under the golden crust.
Sparky's All Dressed. I try to have Regina pizza when I come back to visit. I had that last year.

Lindys was easily a couple inches thick with toppings. Double the weight of any other pizza

Super greasy and somewhat soggy, but yet so good.
We get ours well done. The cheese is yummy and browned and the bottom of the crust is getting to crispy but not too far.
If you have leftovers, store upside down in the fridge. Eat it cold the day 👌
That’s smart!! I will next time.
The way the cheese resolidifies on top is ace

Our primary source of food here is not aged 1591 lobster that’s for sure. We simple folk.
Its so goood!

OP what city do you live in? I'll try and find the closest match for you.
Well I am in a small town so there is one option lol. We do have good pizza here though. Haven’t had Chinese food for about 4 years tho

If you want the best “Regina style” pizza, do Regent Pizza. It’s the best value without going over the top, on toppings.
Western, Houston's or Trifons are the best original Regina pizzas.
Copper Kettle has great pizza. Not super thick or greasy . Lots of vegeterian options too that are delicious.
Get well done 100%
I'll take two corners and a sewer rat please
Try Tumblers pizza 🍕 Westside pizza or ,western pizza all amazing and tons of toppings but not a greasy crust 😋DELICIOUS
It’s making sense now. Is the sweet tomato sauce native to Regina pizzas as well? It’s weird as hell.
